Summary: Join Holly and Devin as they explore the world of US and international politics on today's episode! While neither of them have read many political books in the past, they appreciated these books specifically for their accuracy, the tension built, and the clear demonstration of the impact politics can have on the lives of those working in those spaces. Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:23): Devin discussed Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston, a novel that follows Alex (first son of the United States) and Henry (grandson to the King of England) in one of the most epic enemies to lovers romances out there. After bad press from an incident involving a destroyed wedding cake, Alex and Henry are thrust together for a PR campaign that slowly becomes much, much more. It has just been released on Amazon Prime as a movie - check it out! Devin's key takeaways were: More than anything, this novel is about and conveys LGBTQIA+ joy. Henry is gay but forced to remain in the closet by his family and the crown. Alex had never come to terms with his own sexuality and his journey into understanding his bisexuality is moving and important. Politics, shocker, are at the core of this novel and Alex's mother (the President) is working to be elected for a second term. The accuracy of a re-election campaign, the exploration of a new friendship out of political necessity, and the adrenaline rush of following our protagonists as they navigate their feelings and the potential global consequences would get any reader's heart beating faster. UK and American history is woven throughout the novel; the histories greatly inform the choices, pressures, and decisions Alex and Henry make. They must grapple with what history means for them, what history will see in them, and how they can impact the outcome of their futures by the decisions in their present. The Dagger (23:40): Holly discussed State of Terror by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Louise Penny, a political thriller following new Secretary of State Ellen Adams. A wide-ranging and global story, Clinton and Penny delve into the lives of Ellen Adam and a low-level State Department Employee named Anahita after news of a bomb exploding on a bus in London and Paris breaks. Holly's key takeaways were: Clinton and Penny collaborated together to write this novel during the pandemic. They got to the core of the story they wanted to tell when Louise asked Hillary what kept her up at night, what gave her nightmares when she herself was Secretary of State. Penny's writing is as strong as ever and Hillary's expertise shines through via plot and structure. This book explores the power of female friendship and being a woman in politics; a lot of the main characters are representatives from different countries like Iran, Pakistan, India, and Russia and Betsy, Ellen's number two is named after and an homage to Hillary and Louise's mutual friend who passed away. Yes, State of Terror is a thriller, but don't forget the politics. A lot of the drama happens at a conference room table and the driver behind all of the plot ultimately is the domestic and international political situations that Ellen must navigate. Hot On the Shelf (43:00): Devin: That Summer Feeling by Bridget Morrissey Holly: The Quiet Tenant by Clémence Michallon What's Making Our Hearts Race (46:57): Devin: Baking bagels for the first time! Holly: The film Theater Camp Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Sleepless City: A Nick Ryan Novel by Reed Farrel Coleman https://amzn.to/449r4Bl “A tour-de-force! The pace is relentless, the plot smart, his new lead character, Nick Ryan, is a hero for the times…Reed is a brilliant storyteller.” --Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author When you're in trouble, you call 911. When cops are in trouble, they call Nick Ryan. Every cop in the city knows his name, but no one says it out loud. In fact, they don't talk about him at all. He doesn't wear a uniform, but he is the most powerful cop in New York. Nick Ryan can find a criminal who's vanished. Or he can make a key witness disappear. He has cars, safe houses, money, and weapons hidden all over the city. He's the mayor's private cop, the fixer, the first call when the men and women who protect and serve are in trouble and need protection themselves. With conflicted loyalties and a divided soul, he's a veteran cop still fighting his own private war. He's a soldier of the streets with his own personal code. But what happens when the man who knows all the city's secrets becomes a threat to both sides of the law? About the Author Called a hard-boiled poet by NPR's Maureen Corrigan and the noir poet laureate in the Huffington Post, Reed Farrel Coleman is the New York Times-bestselling author of thirty-one novels—including six in Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone series—short stories, poetry, and essays. In addition to his acclaimed series characters, Moe Prager and Gus Murphy, he has written the stand-alone novel Gun Church and collaborated with decorated Irish crime writer Ken Bruen on the novel Tower. Reed is a four time Edgar Award nominee in three different categories: Best Novel, Best Paperback Original, and Best Short Story. He is a four-time recipient of the Shamus Award for Best PI Novel of the Year. He has also won the Audie, Macavity, Barry, and Anthony Awards.

Summary: Ciao, bella! Welcome to the first stop on our Summer Jetset Series - Italy! Today Devin and Holly visit Venice and Positano together to understand the close relationship between love and death in Italy. Since the time of Shakespeare, the country has been a place of passion in literature (second only, perhaps, to France). They agree that regardless of your prior experience visiting the country, novels set in the country are always vivid, intriguing, and colorful. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (4:19): Holly discussed Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon, a crime fiction novel set in Venice featuring the fictional hero Commissario Guido Brunetti. The book opens at the end of intermission at Teatro La Fenice; the conductor, Maestro Wallauer, has been poisoned and is dead on the floor of his dressing room. Holly's key takeaways were: The mystery of who killed the Maestro is a slow burn through the book. Brunetti's tactics are conversation focused, and the novel is the opposite of a templated popcorn thriller. That being said, it came together very effectively by the end. Leon has lived in Venice for years and brought her experiences to the page; we get great behind-the-scenes looks at the Venetian opera house, excursions by canal around the city, and a colorful cast of Italian characters (most of whom are constantly smoking and drinking coffee) This series is the Italian cousin to the Bruno Chief of Police series set in southern France; if you're a fan of Louise Penny you'll also likely enjoy these books! The Heart (17:35): Devin discussed One Italian Summer by Rebecca Searle, a novel set in Positano that follows Katy Silver on a vacation that was intended as a mother-daughter trip. When Katy's mother dies before they can make it to the Amalfi Coast, Katy's entire sense of reality and herself is turned upside down. She is unsure if she wants to stay in her marriage, and uses the vacation to get some space. Devin's key takeaways were: This is essentially a time travel story; once Katy arrives, she meets her own mother (Carol) at 30 years old in the summer she had spent in Positano before meeting her husband and settling down. The time travel element isn't fully explained and the reader is left unsure of how Katy travels back and forth across decades (best not to think too hard on this and just enjoy the story). Searle explores this mother-daughter relationship in-depth through the novel. Katy has a romantic fling as well, but ultimately the book posits that Carol is her soulmate. Katy must learn how to reframe herself as an individual, instead of as a bonded pair with her mother. Regardless of the plot holes, this novel had such vivid descriptions of Positano, the hotels, the hills, the restaurants, even Katy's outfits, that the reader is fully drawn into the Italian adventure. The sense of place could not be stronger. Hot On the Shelf (38:34): Holly: Decent People by De'Shawn Charles Winslow Devin: In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:15): Holly: Libro.fm Devin: Ted Lasso Season 3 Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Commonplace Quotes: Those who read poetry to improve their minds will never improve their minds by reading poetry, for the true enjoyments must be spontaneous and compulsive and look to no remoter end. The Muses will submit to no marriage of convenience. C. S. Lewis One of these days I shall write a book in which two men are seen to walk down a cul de sac, and there is a shot, and one man is found murdered, and the other runs away with a gun in his hand, and after twenty chapters stinking with red herrings, it turns out that the man with the gun did it after all. Dorothy L. Sayers The Listeners by Walter De La Mare ‘Is there anybody there?' said the Traveler, Knocking on the moonlit door; And his horse in the silence champed the grasses Of the forest's ferny floor: And a bird flew up out of the turret, Above the Traveler's head: And he smote upon the door again a second time; ‘Is there anybody there?' he said. But no one descended to the Traveler; No head from the leaf-fringed sill Leaned over and looked into his grey eyes, Where he stood perplexed and still. But only a host of phantom listeners That dwelt in the lone house then Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight To that voice from the world of men: Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair, That goes down to the empty hall, Hearkening in an air stirred and shaken By the lonely Traveler's call. And he felt in his heart their strangeness, Their stillness answering his cry, While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf, 'Neath the starred and leafy sky; For he suddenly smote on the door, even Louder, and lifted his head:— ‘Tell them I came, and no one answered, That I kept my word,' he said. Never the least stir made the listeners, Though every word he spake Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house From the one man left awake: Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup, And the sound of iron on stone, And how the silence surged softly backward, When the plunging hoofs were gone. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and author Louise Penny joined Zibby for an event with the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center to discuss their New York Times bestselling political thriller, State of Terror, which centers around one of Secretary Clinton's greatest fears: the possibility that terrorists could get ahold of nuclear weapons. Secretary Clinton and Penny share how they met through Clinton's late best friend and bonded through Penny's grief after losing her husband. The duo also reveals what it took for them to hit their co-writing stride, which political powerhouse inspired their protagonist, how President Clinton was recovering after his recent hospitalization, and why it was important that the story focused on strong but imperfect women.Purchase on Zibby's Bookshop: https://bit.ly/3MxRndrPurchase on Bookshop: bit.ly/3BmIBr4Subscribe to Zibby's weekly newsletter here.Purchase Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books merch here. Louise Penny discusses A World of Curiosities, the latest in the Inspector Armand Gamache series, C.S. Richardson takes the Proust questionnaire and columnists Vish Khanna and Treasa Levasseur recommend books on music and self development.
Episode #52 - Don Hewson is an intellectual property lawyer and resident of The Village of Erin Meadows in Mississauga, Canada. He has a background in engineering and has traveled to 87 countries, and is an avid fan of classical music and author Louise Penny. Unlock the hidden gems of wisdom as hosts Kathy Buckworth and Evelyn Brindle chat with Don on the Green Bench. "Encourage your children to do whatever it is they want to do and get involved in collegial activities - don't be loners - and be sure to excel in mathematics and science courses to open up a world of possibilities!" Don Hewson had a passion for music and engineering, but it wasn't until he was a senior partner at a law firm specializing in Intellectual Property Law that he was able to combine these two passions. He quickly learned the technical aspects of patent law and soon was travelling around the world to represent his clients. He was also able to introduce his wife, Yummy, to a world of travel and music. Through his work, Don was able to unlock the potential of a variety of projects, from the chocolate coating on Chapman's ice cream to the revolutionary device that enabled the fast and efficient formation of poured concrete buildings. Don's career also allowed him to inspire others to pursue their passions, no matter how unconventional. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How did the invention of a revolutionary concrete forming device revolutionize construction? 2. Why is intellectual property law a field that requires a science or engineering background? 3. What are the benefits of taking a music course in high school, and how did it influence Don Hewson's career? Physically or virtually, the bench invites us all to sit alongside a senior, share a conversation, or give and offer advice. It challenges the stigma seniors face; the ageism still so prevalent in society. It reminds us of the wealth of wisdom our elders offer and in doing so, helps restore them to a place of reverence. "The greatest untapped resource in Canada, if not the world, is the collective wisdom of our elders." -Ron Schlegel This podcast is brought to you by Schlegel Villages Retirement & Long-term Care homes in Ontario, Canada. #ElderWisdom | Stories from the Green Bench is produced by Memory Tree Productions Learn more about our host, Kathy Buckworth, at kathybuckworth.com Learn more about #ElderWisdom at elderwisdom.ca Learn more about Schlegel Villages at schlegelvillages.com

Summary: Louise Penny is one of Canada's most prolific and successful authors - she writes dark, heart wrenching murders that somehow pair well with a quiet town with quaint bed and breakfasts and bistros with some of the best food ever described. Holly and Devin fell in love with the Armand Gamache detective series years ago, and today they finally get to gush about Louise and her writing for the podcast! Check out a spoiler-free LoveFest to learn why both Holly and Devin cannot get enough of these murder mysteries! Topics Discussed: Plots (6:28): The mysteries themselves are unusual and ultimately a bit odd - no one is ever taken out by a gun in front of a security camera. This makes the books super fresh and unlike other mystery novels. Penny intends to leave the reader off-balance, and her masterful writing is intended to keep us guessing without ever making us question plausibility. The books must be read in order because there are multi-book plotlines that investigate larger issues than each murder - corruption, racism, drug trafficking, and infrastructure neglect to name a few. Characters (15:15): Every character, recurring or not, is flawed and therefore deeply human. As a reader, it becomes easy to empathize even with Ruth, a mean old crone alcoholic and poet (Devin's car is named Ruth after her). The series centers around the citizens of Three Pines, a fictitious Québec town that acts as a microcosm of community everywhere. We follow a core group of characters as they grow, evolve, live and die in Three Pines; the ultimate feeling for the reader is that they are journeying through life with friends they care about deeply. Writing (21:12): Part of the magic of Penny is that she writes about each character as if she is in their head; if they are confident they are right, only time and the advancing plot will show us. This adds a propulsive and immersive element to the story where you as the reader feel like you're experiencing it with them as things evolve, versus being told a story. Louise Penny may as well have been a psychologist (and one of the Three Pines residents, Myrna, actually is!) for how deeply she understands the human condition and infuses that deep compassion into her writing. Themes (27:20): Motivation: there are deep emotional and psychological motivations for all characters which drives both good and bad decisions across the series. Grief plays an especially large role, unveiling the long-term impacts of death and trauma. Art: there is art all over this series! Ruth is a poet, Armand quotes poetry and literature freely while they investigate murder, Clara and Peter are visual artists, music features heavily throughout. Justice: While Armand is of course a detective, the series also interrogates the true meaning of justice as a concept, pitting Armand and his team multiple times against various power structures and corrupt systems that force them to make decisions - doing what is right, what is easy, and sometimes, what is technically illegal. Community: Yes, these are murder mystery books, but all 18 books are united by a compelling and heartwarming sense of community. The characters care about each other, about their place in the world, and about how their decisions impact others. Details (33:56): The food!! We could talk for two hours about the food alone. Penny enlists the help of all five senses to create a vivid world that grounds the reader and makes Three Pines come to life, one croissant at a time. Each book tends to be quite seasonal, centered on a specific time of year that adds to the tension, plot, and sense that we are experiencing life as it happens for the characters. The police investigations are not glossed over and have many nitpicky details that brings the reader more deeply into the often confusion, dead-end exploring world of detective Gamache as he and his team solve murders. Favorite Books (40:16): Holly: The Beautiful Mystery (Book 8) Devin: How the Light Gets In (Book 9) Hot On the Shelf (49:14): Holly: She is a Haunting by Trang Thanh Tran Devin: Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon What's Making Our Hearts Race (51:04): Holly: Andor on Disney+ Devin: Paul T. Hello BackStory fans! In this episode, after we talk a bit about crime dramas, famous Canadians, and Columbo, we sit down with the amazing actress Anna Tierney. She is an interesting person with an equally interesting backstory, who we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with. A few eclectic topics discussed: renovating houseboats, roller derby, accents, and much more. From Anna's bio: Anna Tierney is an English actress, born in Manchester and raised in Northolt, West London. She is the daughter of renowned actor Malcolm Tierney (Braveheart, Lovejoy, Star Wars, Poldark and the original House Of Cards) and visual artist, Andrea Tierney. In August 2021 Anna began filming as a series regular opposite Alfred Molina in the hotly anticipated 'Three Pines' Inspector Gamache series. The stories, based on the best-selling crime novels written by Louise Penny, have been adapted for screen by Emilia Di Girolamo and can be seen on Amazon Prime. Anna trained at the Drama Centre London and was supported through drama school through various awards and the support of actors Jeremy Irons, Ian McKellen, Kitty Aldridge, Timothy West, Ian McShane and Roger Lloyd Pack. After graduating she landed a role In the BBC's long running series 'Doctors', where she played Marianne Hartwell. She created the show 'Skate Hard, Turn Left' ; a devised, highly physical theatre show performed entirely on roller skates. Over intensive rehearsal periods, she trained the troupe of actors to roller skate, inspired by the sport of roller derby. Anna is a highly skilled skater in real life and played roller derby semi-professionally for 8 years with London Roller Derby. While performing in the hit international tour of the play, ‘Our Country's Good', she performed at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and then for the 25 Year anniversary at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theater. It was here she met her partner, acclaimed musician and singer Gabriel DeSantis.
