Jon Radford has been adding soul and rhythmic vibe to the Nashville music scene since 2005, when he first began visiting the city to pick up drum gigs. He would soon move to Nashville from his hometown of Clarksville, TN with his wife, acclaimed painter Kim Radford. After transitioning to Nashville full-time, Radford began touring across the US and Europe with Charles Walker & The Dynamites and Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors. When not touring, Radford could be found fulfilling a vital tradition for Nashville's most talented, playing the lower Broadway honky-tonk bars on Sunday nights with The Don Kelly Band. In 2012, Radford helped found the critically acclaimed Luella and the Sun, a blues and gospel-tinged rock quartet. The band released a 10” single, Fly So Free, and toured for two years, performing at festivals such as Austin City Limits and Hangout Fest before disbanding. Also in 2012, Radford joined Justin Townes Earle's touring band, performing on The Late Show with David Letterman. Radford's uniquely soulful, powerful drumming style is influenced by the iconic session players of 1960s and 1970s, including Kenny Buttrey, Hal Blaine, Jim Gordon, Steve Gadd, and Al Jackson Jr. Radford's extensive and ever-growing record collection is also a constant and evolving influence. In recent years, Radford has been an active session musician around Nashville, recording with producers such as Jacquire King, Brendan Benson, Paul Ebersold, and Jim Abbiss. Radford is also a regular member of the Nashville-based instrumental group Steelism. I sat down with Janie Barnett, a singer, songwriter, arranger, and educator whose career reflects a steady commitment to saying yes to what fits and no to what does not.We begin with her roots in the Greater Washington area, where summers at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and early exposure to roots music shaped her ear. Moving to New York was a shock. The city carried a gritty, post-Patti Smith energy and felt like a long search for a new urban Americana sound. Janie found her footing through community, especially friendships with Robin Batteau and Kenny White. Session work, including jingles, gave her financial stability and the freedom to keep her songwriting honest rather than chasing a paycheck through her own music.We talk about life behind the scenes and what it taught her about leadership. Janie shares stories from sessions with Linda Ronstadt and a career highlight singing background vocals on Saturday Night Live with Rickie Lee Jones, one of her musical heroes. Being on the team shaped how she leads her own bands, creating rooms where musicians feel respected and invited to contribute.She also reflects on how becoming a parent changed her artistry. Jamey Haddad's career as a drummer and percussionist has spanned five decades, countless genres, and multiple continents. For over 25 years, he's had a close relationship with Paul Simon, playing alongside Steve Gadd on multiple records and live projects. He has appeared on over 170 recordings and has played with a wide range of artists from Joe Lovano to Yo Yo Ma, and his career as an educator has found him at Berklee, New England Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Former guitarist for Canadian Music Hall of Fame recording artist “The Guess Who” (2021-2024) - Michael's pedigree also includes many years as lead guitarist and musical director with original Foreigner vocalist and solo artist Lou Gramm, guitarist with multi-platinum artist Mark Slaughter, as well as both RockStar counselor and Music Director of the prestigious Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp organization. Dancer, choreographer, and a founding member of LA’s Syncopated Ladies Melinda Sullivan uses her feet to make music. On a new album aptly titled Big Foot, she teams up with famed pianist Larry Goldings and dances in her socks, sand, and even sneakers for a nuanced tone. Punctuating Goldings’ compositions with Sullivan’s tap dancing, “Do You Like” features the voice of Anna Goldings and makeshift percussion by legendary drummer Steve Gadd.
