Jamey Haddad's career as a drummer and percussionist has spanned five decades, countless genres, and multiple continents. For over 25 years, he's had a close relationship with Paul Simon, playing alongside Steve Gadd on multiple records and live projects. He has appeared on over 170 recordings and has played with a wide range of artists from Joe Lovano to Yo Yo Ma, and his career as an educator has found him at Berklee, New England Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. In this episode, Jamey talks about: Playing with Paul Simon, and Paul's constant desire to rehearse and adjust how his music is presented Recording the album You're The One and collaborating with Steve Gadd to create the rhythmic and textural foundations for those songs Committing to representing the traditions he studied in the pop world How a given style can be treated as both an academic subject or a folkloric tradition “Every generation needs its music.” How to make people you're playing with know you're listening to them
Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming, the podcast powered by Big Fat Snare Drum. This is another segment of Big Fat Five, where I invite my favorite drummers to break down the five records that shaped their approach to the instrument. Today, I'm joined by Ian Matthews, drummer for the "future rock" Kasabian—a group that, like many of the greats, enjoys massive success outside the U.S. while somehow remaining criminally underrated stateside. With eight studio albums and a reputation for explosive, anthemic live shows, Kasabian has been shaping the sound of modern rock for decades. And at the heart of it all? Ian Matthews—the powerhouse engine behind their dynamic and electrifying sound. We cover a lot in this conversation—stuff that will help any drummer level up their playing and presence on the kit. I also want to mention something special: If you've listened to The Drum Panel recently, you know I've talked about a certain project from November 2024 that I was really stoked about. Well, Ian was one of my main inspirations for those sessions. This one meant a lot. Enjoy the five records that shaped Ian Matthews into the drummer he is today. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!
This post is public so feel free to share it.In this podcast, we hear about the career of legendary drummer Matt Vander Ende, who shares his fascinating journey from the West Coast music scene to the bright lights of Broadway. Known for his dynamic playing style, Matt takes us through his transition from rock and metal drumming into musical theater, where he ultimately landed one of Broadway's most demanding drumming roles in Wicked.Throughout the interview, Matt reveals:* His musical upbringing was in Oakland, California, and he had early classical training at the San Francisco Conservatory. he has a diverse performance background spanning from school jazz bands to heavy metal tours with his band, Defiance.* How he developed his versatile style, drawing influence from drumming legends like Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Metallica's Lars Ulrich, blending classical chops with rock intensity.* His unexpected path into musical theater, starting with a recommendation to try drumming in local theater productions—a choice that paved the way to his long-running career on Broadway.Matt's detailed look at his role as the drummer for Wicked is a highlight of the conversation. He describes the intense demands of this iconic show, which requires the drummer to seamlessly switch between musical genres, from reggae and punk-inspired beats to classical and traditional Broadway rhythms—all while leading a large 23-piece orchestra.Matt shares:* What makes Wicked such a challenging and unique show to play, including the precise, genre-hopping drumming style it requires to drive the music and choreography.* His experience mastering complex segments like the intense “No Good Deed,” which he describes as “Bartok meets Metallica”—an exhilarating, intricate piece that demands both technical precision and a heavy rock feel.* The importance of consistency in Wicked, with Matt highlighting his methods for keeping each performance fresh, despite the rigorous routine, and the ways he managed physical strain and injury during his tenure.Matt also gives valuable advice to aspiring Broadway drummers on the importance of discipline, professionalism, and learning a wide variety of musical styles. He emphasizes the necessity of playing each performance exactly as the regular drummer does, especially for subs, and offers insights on building relationships and working as part of a close-knit Broadway team. For Broadway fans, drummers, and musicians alike, this episode is packed with stories, lessons, and insights from Matt's extraordinary journey. Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat. Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Our man Ginn loves him some Gadd! In this brief episode, we extract three of Hunter's favorite moments by his favorite drummer on the planet, Steve Gadd. It results in something we thought we'd never do on this podcast: play a snippet of a Paul Simon song. But you have to admit, Gadd is Badd…Badd Ass! Note I: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Note II: All past Radical Research episodes can be found here, where you can also find Jeff's Peter Steele and Fates Warning books…and more to come soon! Radicalresearch.org Music cited in order of appearance: Chick Corea, “Quartet No. 2, Part II” (Three Quartets, 1981) Chick Corea, “Night Sprite” (The Leprechaun, 1976) Paul Simon, “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” (Still Crazy After All These Years, 1975) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

This London born drummer started his music career in the mid 80s as drummer and co founder of cult space-rock band Ozric Tentacles. His influences range from John Bonham, Phil Colins, Sly Dunbar, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobbam, Bernard Purdie, Alphonse Mouson, Jeff Poccaro, Tony Williams and Lenny White. Joining Acid Jazz act The Sandals as lead guitarist in 1990 saw tours follow and soon after he was introduced to Acid Jazz' new signing Jamiroquai completing frontman JK's new live band line up as their drummer. The band was quickly signed to Sony and he went on to record on the classic chart topping debut Emergency on Planet Earth LP playing drums, some guitar and co-writing the song If I Like It I Do It. A hectic schedule of touring and worldwide promotion followed, including the release of singles Too Young To Die, Blow Your Mind and Emergency on Planet Earth. Leaving the band in 94 and together with musician mates, funky guitar maverick from The Brand New Heavies Simon Bartholomew and bass player Nick Seymour, they formed the supergroup Akimbo also signed to Acid Jazz label. The band headlined Londons' Soho Jazz festival two years running appearing at Ronnie Scotts and Madame JoJo's Deep funk sessions hosted by legendary rare funk Dj and collector Keb Darge. By 1999 Nick and Keb Darge started their own independent label Deep Funk Records. Frenette's love of music started at the age of 5 while playing the bongos and listening to records with his parents. Artists like Perez Perado, Tito Puente, Herb Albert, Johnny Cash and Tom Jones were constantly spinning on the record player. By the age of 10, Matt was learning his rudiments in a marching and concert band. Some of Matt's early influences include Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Michael Shrieve, Danny Seraphine,Billy Cobham, and later influences include Manu Katche, Steve Gadd, and Richard Bailey. Frenette is a founding member of Streetheart and his legacy as the other half of one of rock's greatest rhythm sections is still a part of Canadian rock legend. Matt's fierce approach to every song and powerful grooves he created were a big part of the musical foundation that Streetheart built their unmistakable sound on in the early days. In 1979 Matthew left Streetheart to join Paul Dean's new band Loverboy. Originally, Matt Frenette played drums for a side-project band, Headpins while Bernie Aubin played drums for a fellow Vancouver band, the soon to be renamed Loverboy. But within months, Aubin and Frenette swapped bands, where each continues to play to the present Alongside fellow Loverboy founding members Mike Reno, Paul Dean, Doug Johnson, with Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve, Matt Frenette has been "Working for the Weekend" since forming in Calgary, Alberta over 36 years ago. Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling "Get Lucky." In 1982, as a member of Loverboy, Frenette went on to win a "still-record" six Juno awards. Matt's solid groove, versatile musicality and his visually exciting performance has created a demand for his appearance in many different artists' recordings, videos and tours, such as: Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, Colin James and many other talented musicians. Jim's a very rare breed because he's a phenomenal guitarist, and he's equally adept at drums. He's played on 5 Paul Simon LPs and did multiple world tours with Paul Simon... playing guitar, bass and drums on Paul Simon's 2011 album "So Beautiful Or So What,” which was produced by Phil Ramone. Also worked for Phil Ramone as a studio musician (outside of Paul Simon). Other sideman gigs include most recently touring and performing on Lucinda Williams' latest LP, playing on Andrea Zonn's recording "Rise" along with Steve Gadd, Willie Weeks, Vince Gill... as well as records with artists Rodney Crowell, Swamp Dogg, Janis Ian and others. Jim has a new album out called I Want to Be Loved, it's an album of cool Jimmy Reed blues covers - this a duo record with Jim Keltner playing drums and Jim playing everything else. I'm excited to let you know Jim Oblon is also the guy who wrote, played and produced the opening and closing bumper music for the audio version of the Everyone Loves Guitar Talk Show & Podcast. Alec Baldwin speaks with two genius musicians whose artistry has contributed to some of the most memorable songs of the sixties, seventies and eighties, leaving an indelible mark on the music world. Steve Gadd, one of the most influential drummers of all time, is known for bridging jazz, rock, and blues. He has been a studio musician for countless artists from Carly Simon to Aretha Franklin – and tours with musicians like Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Joe Cocker, as well as with his own outfit, The Steve Gadd Band. His artistry can be found on Paul Simon's “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” and Steely Dan's “Aja.” Larry Carlton is a four-time Grammy winning jazz and rock guitarist who became famous for his work as a studio musician in the 1970s and 1980s. He has played in over 3,000 studio sessions with artists like Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton and many others. Rolling Stone named his contribution to Steely Dan's “Kid Charlemagne” one of the best guitar solos in rock music. Carlton is also renowned for his solo work and as a member of the jazz group The Crusaders and the smooth jazz band Fourplay.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
