Tonight's Jazz Feature is a belated Birthday tribute to one of the the most unique and individual voices of the alto saxophone John Lenwood "Jackie" McLean. Jackie was born in Harlem, New York City on May 17,1931 and passed away at age 74 on March 31, 2006 after a long illness. Jackie made his first recording at age 19 with Miles Davis as a disciple of Charlie Parker and with his own sound. It wasn't long before Jackie developed his own ideas and phrasing. The Jazz Feature is a rare and previously unissued Blue Note Records date from 1966 that has Jackie exploring linear modal forms on the five tunes on the album. He also presents along with bassist Don Moore, two relatively new players on the New York scene: pianist Larry Willis who contributes the title track and and one other tune and a great young drummer from Chicago named Jack DeJohnette! Jackie's sound has been described as "sugar free saxophone" and you'll hear that in abundance tonight. Happy Birthday Anniversary Mr. McLean and to our listers: enjoy "High Frequency".
The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

This is the WORLD PREMIERE of “THE RICH ONES ALL STARS”, the new extended version of my recent single, “The Rich Ones”. The new version features me and my band, Project Grand Slam, along with 8 World Class musicians who previously have been guests on this podcast. Here's the back story.A few months ago I released a single, “The Rich Ones”, featuring Randy Brecker of Blood Sweat & Tears fame on flugelhorn. The single was very popular, and I decided to do something a bit daring and different. I've had many World Class musicians as guests on the podcast. So I asked several of them if they would record a new solo for the track and I would release a new, extended version of the tune. I'm pleased to say that everyone who I asked agreed. The new version, “The Rich Ones All Stars”, features the following musicians in this order.BILLY COBHAM of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame, recorded a new drum track for the tune. Billy is one of the most revered drummers of all time.I kept RANDY BRECKER'S flugelhorn solo from the original version of the tune because it's just so darn good.JOHN HELLIWELL was the saxophonist in Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. John contributed a fantastic sax solo to the piece.PAT COIL is an acclaimed jazz pianist who has performed with Michael McDonald, Carmen McRae and many others. He added a sublime piano solo.PETER TIEHUIS is the heralded Dutch guitarist who performs with the Metropole Orkest. He contributed a wonderful guitar solo.ANTONIO FARAO is the extraordinary Italian jazz keyboard player who has performed with Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette among others. Antonio contributed a smokin' Fender Rhodes keyboard solo.ELLIOTT RANDALL is the incredible guitarist who gave the world the unforgettable solo on Steely Dan's “Reelin' In The Years”. Elliott gave me a classic guitar solo for the new track. And last, but certainly not least, is DAVID AMRAM, who is, simply put, a National Treasure at 96 years young. He was Leonard Bernstein's first composer in residence for the New York Philharmonic and also the composer for Shakespeare In The Park among many other accomplishments. David contributed a stunning Pennywhistle solo for the track. So there it is. 8 World Class musicians who have contributed their talent to this project.TO WATCH THE OFFICIAL VIDEO CLICK HERETO LISTEN AND STREAM THE TRACK AND FOR ALL LINKS CLICK HERE---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. Band of Other Brothers is a stellar, multi genre supergroup whose members boast incredible associations with a Who's Who of A-listers. There's pianist Jeff Babko (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sheryl Crow), saxophonist and woodwind wizard Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, John Mayer), guitarist Nir Felder (Esperanza Spalding, Jack DeJohnette), and bassist, vocalist Will Lee (Late Show with David Letterman, The Brecker Brothers). While they've joined forces before, this is their first holiday release. It's called “This Year At Christmas” on Ear Up records, and offers Christmas standards delivered in a unique, and even unconventional manner, by this all-star group of multi Grammy®️ winning musicians. The album also features two very special guest vocalists, as well as Keith Carlock's own Carlock Family Choir, all highlighted by an amazing string ensemble that offers the perfect complement the joubilant selection of tunes. My guests for this fun and more than occasionally frenetic conversation are Jeff Babko, Jeff Coffin, Nir Felder and Will Lee. Drummer Keith Carlock was tending to the reindeer and sadly couldn't join in the Christmas chaos. Join me for a whimsical journey through the backstory behind this one-of-a-kind holiday release.

“Dreams do come true.” That's how Greg sums up this episode, as he and Nate talk with master drummer Jack DeJohnette about an incredible recording made in the spring of 1966. Featuring a ferocious quartet co-led by pianist McCoy Tyner and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, it captures each of those giants at a turning point in his career. Blue Note Records will release this album, Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs', on Nov. 22. (Nate contributed the main liner notes.) In our far-reaching conversation, Jack reflects on what makes this recording special; the dynamics between the musicians in the band, including bassist Henry Grimes; and the secret to keeping one's composure in the midst of a musical storm.Support WRTI: https://bit.ly/2yAkaJsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The First Jazz Feature tonight is "An Introduction to Jazz" narrated by Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. It is a tradition on The Jazz Show every year paying tribute to this time of year..."back to school, back to work" etc. with this educational and entertaining overview of the history of Jazz. Although it was recorded in 1960 it has significance and relevance to today's Jazz of 2024. The second Jazz Feature is a significant album by one of the most distinctive voices of the alto saxophone, the late Arthur Blythe. Mr. Blythe was well known in Los Angeles as a member of that city's Jazz underground and when he emigrated to New York in the mid 70's and recorded for small labels. Blythe to the surprise of many was signed by Columbia Records and recorded his first album called "Lenox Avenue Breakdown" . It was edgy, energetic and consisted of only four long compositions by Arthur Blythe. His band was unique as well with Arthur's fulsome alto saxophone paired with flute, guitar, tuba bass and drums. Blythe is accompanied by James Newton on flute, James "Blood" Ulmer on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, Cecil McBee on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums and Guilherme Franco on percussion. This date began a four album run for Columbia and strangely they all soon became collectors items as they were not kept in the catalogue. Perhaps they were too adventurous for the lay Jazz public. Tonight The Jazz Show presents the first and best on "Lenox Avenue Breakdown". Head's up!!!

Three-time GRAMMY winner and musical omnivore Bruce Hornsby chats about his wide-ranging career, from pop to bluegrass to jazz! PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about their Instagram, a wild Genesis fact, and more. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Bruce HornsbyABOUT BRUCE HORNSBY:Thirteen-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner Bruce Hornsby has built one of the most diverse, collaborative, and adventurous careers in contemporary music. In the early 1980s Bruce was writing songs, playing sessions as a musician, and touring as member of Ambrosia and, later, Sheena Easton's backing band. By the middle of the decade he'd formed the group Bruce Hornsby and the Range, signed a deal with RCA Records, and released his debut album, which spawned the hit singles “The Way It Is,” “Mandolin Rain,” and “Every Little Kiss.” As a result, Bruce and the band won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1987. Their sophomore album, Scenes from the Southside, spawned the hit single “The Valley Road” and included Bruce's own version of “Jacob's Ladder,” a song he co-wrote that became a #1 hit for Huey Lewis. In addition to his own artist career, Bruce began collaborating extensively in that era, including producing Leon Russell, co-writing Don Henley's “The End of the Innocence,” playing piano on Bonnie Raitt's “I Can't Make You Love Me,” and appearing on albums by everyone from Bob Dylan to Stevie Nicks to Willie Nelson. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Bruce increasingly began incorporating elements of bluegrass and jazz into his music. He disbanded the Range to pursue other projects, including becoming a staple of the Grateful Dead's touring lineup. His debut solo album, Harbor Lights, was released in 1993, and he won another Grammy that year, for Best Pop Instrumental, for composing “Barcelona Mona” with Branford Marsalis for the Barcelona Olympics. He released two additional solo studio albums in the 1990s before forming a new band, The Noisemakers, which released four studio albums between 2002 and 2016. In that same period, he collaborated with bluegrass artist Ricky Skaggs to release one studio album and one live album, and with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jack DeJohnette to release a jazz album called Camp Meeting. Bruce's 2014 album Solo Concerts showcased a sampling of his one-man performances. In 2019 Bruce returned to releasing studio albums as a solo artist with Absolute Zero, an album included collaborations with Blake Mills, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and others. Among Bruce's many collaborations includes a longstanding partnership scoring films for director Spike Lee. Earlier this year, Bruce released Deep Sea Vents, a water-themed collaborative album with the band yMusic that was released under the name Brhym.

Rufus Reid is an extremely important but under-recognized figure in modern jazz. He's always been someone who's had one foot in the mainstream and one in the avant-garde — he did a lot of work with soul jazz and jazz-funk saxophonist Eddie Harris in the early 1970s, before joining Dexter Gordon's band when Gordon made his famous US comeback after years in Europe. He was also part of Andrew Hill's band in the late '80s, and has done a ton of straightahead records. But he was also a member of Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition in the early '80s, and he was one of the four bassists on Henry Threadgill's X-75 album, and he played on Muhal Richard Abrams' Things To Come From Those Now Gone, and he played with Anthony Braxton on the two Seven Standards 1985 albums with Hank Jones on piano and Victor Lewis on drums. He was also a member of the World Bass Violin Ensemble, which was a group of six bassists that made an album for Black Saint in 1984. Reid has also done a lot of work as a leader. He's made a string of albums in collaboration with drummer Akira Tana and various other musicians; he's done bass duo albums with Michael Moore; and he's led the Out Front trio with pianist Steve Allee and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. In 2014, he released Quiet Pride: the Elizabeth Catlett Project, an album that featured a total of 19 instrumentalists and a singer all paying tribute to a sculptor whose work focused on the Black female experience in America. Reid is also an educator and the author of The Evolving Bassist, a book originally published in 1974 that's still a standard text for bassists. In this interview, we talk about Reid's work with Eddie Harris, with Dexter Gordon, with Henry Threadgill, and with his own ensembles. We talk about a six-CD set he made with Frank Kimbrough a few years ago, recording all of Thelonious Monk's compositions. We talk about his approach to the instrument, his influences, and about his new album, which is a duo collaboration with pianist Sullivan Fortner. This was a really enjoyable and informative conversation, and I think you'll come away from it with a new or perhaps a renewed appreciation for someone who's been a major figure in jazz for 50 years and isn't stopping yet.

Welcome back to the Burning Ambulance Podcast! To find out about upcoming episodes, as well as all things Burning Ambulance, sign up for our free weekly newsletter. It's been a long time since I've done one of these. In fact, the last episode was released in December of 2022. I talked then to film critic Walter Chaw about his book on the work of director Walter Hill. Since then, a lot's been going on. Most notably, I wrote a book of my own, In The Brewing Luminous: The Life And Music Of Cecil Taylor, which will be released this year. It's the first full-length biography and critical analysis of Taylor, who is not only a hugely important jazz musician – along with Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and others, he was one of the pioneers of free jazz and really pushed the music forward in undeniable ways – but is also, I believe and argue in the book, a brilliant and under-recognized American composer whose work spans a much broader range than many people realize.Ethan Iverson is also a really interesting American composer. You could be reductive about it and call him a synthesist of old and new pop and jazz styles, but he has a strong and recognizable voice that becomes easy to hear the more of his music you listen to. There are chords and types of melodies that he favors that set him apart from his peers, and he's got a real attraction to big hooks, which manifested in the Bad Plus's work in a number of ways and shows up in his solo work too. The Bad Plus developed a reputation for piano trio covers of pop songs that people often seemed to think were ironic, but were in fact performed from a perspective of real love for compositional form. A great tune is a great tune. And it's worth remembering that they also recorded Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, which is an avant-garde landmark but also has some really kick-ass and highly memorable melodies. After all, it was originally written for dancers.Ethan's new album, Technically Acceptable, is his second record for Blue Note and he's doing some things on it that he's never done before. First of all, he's playing with two different rhythm sections that are made up of musicians more or less his own age, even younger than himself. Until now, he's tended to record with older players, legends like Jack DeJohnette, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Billy Hart, Paul Motian, Ron Carter, etc. This is his first time post-Bad Plus making an album entirely with musicians of his own generation. Also, it includes a solo piano sonata – three movements, fifteen minutes, a through composed classical piece that still manages to fit under the umbrella of jazz in a George Gershwin meets Fats Waller kind of way. This album is a real showcase for him as a composer.Ethan and I talk about Cecil Taylor in the interview you're about to hear. We also talk about his work and how it's evolved over the years, the economics of surviving as a jazz musician in the 21st century, and we talk about other piano players of his generation like Jason Moran, Aaron Diehl, Aaron Parks, Jeb Patton, and Sullivan Fortner. We talk about diving into the music's history, and about how there's as much to learn and draw from in the music of the 1920s and 1930s as in the music of the 1960s and afterward, and about the increasing movement toward composition in current jazz. This is his second time on the podcast – a couple of years ago, I interviewed him alongside Mark Turner, because they'd made a duo album together. But this time it's a one on one conversation, and I hope you'll find it as interesting as I did.
Ra Kalam Bob Moses spent his youth growing up in New York City and living in the same building as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Elvin Jones, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. This early experience had a profound effect on this young musician. Ra Kalam would go on to work with jazz luminaries such as Gary Burton, Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow, Jack DeJohnette, Tisziji Muñoz and many others. He was also a member of the group The Free Spirits in the 1960's, considered one of the first Jazz rock bands ever. Many were introduced to Ra Kalam's drumming by way of Pat Metheny‘s very first solo record Bright Size Life in 1976 with Jaco Pastorius on bass. Ra Kalam is also a composer and leader on many recorded projects, going back decades. In this episode, Ra Kalam talks about: His thoughts on the documentary being made about him Growing up in the same building as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Elvin Jones, Rahsaan Roland Kirk in New York Getting beyond your tendencies and patterns His relationship with teacher and musical collaborator, Tisziji Muñoz The origin of his name “Ra Kalam” Reconciling his own legacy Upcoming recordings
