Maestro Jonathan Darlington on Puccini, broken batons, being mistaken for Richard Gere in Italian lifts, and why La Bohème will undo you — every time.Jonathan Darlington led Vancouver Opera for nearly twenty years. He's since conducted at the Vienna State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Swedish Opera, and the Nürnberger Symphoniker, where he's now Chief Conductor. He lives in Paris — ten minutes from the neighbourhood where La Bohème is actually set. And he keeps coming back to Vancouver. This week he's back in the pit at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for La Bohème — Puccini's love story about young artists in Paris trying to stay warm, fall in love, and stay alive. It's the fastest-selling production in Vancouver Opera's sixty-six year history. In this conversation, Ashley Daniel Foot asks Darlington what's actually going through his mind in the sixteen bars before the curtain rises, how the streets of Vancouver have changed the way he hears Puccini, why he still wants to conduct one specific opera just to erase a humiliation from thirty years ago, and what it felt like to open Sweeney Todd surrounded by a large metal contraption on stage while trying to frighten the audience — a task made easier, he admits, by the fact that he was already terrified himself.Plus: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Carlos Kleiber, Mirella Freni, four piccolos playing fortissimo, a Vancouver harpsichord builder who makes his batons by hand, and the pre-show meal of champions.La Bohème runs April 25 to May 3 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Tickets at vancouveropera.ca.
Our month of Jack Webb continues with his most unusual crime drama - Pete Kelly's Blues, a show that incorporated Webb's love of jazz into its weekly mysteries. Kelly played cornet in a combo at a Kansas City speakeasy during Prohibition, and each episode featured vocal and instrumental musical numbers. Though it didn't last long on radio, Webb brought Pete Kelly's Blues to the big screen with a cast that included Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald. We'll hear four episodes of the short-lived series: "Gus Trudeau" (originally aired on NBC on August 15, 1951); "Zelda" (originally aired on NBC on September 5, 1951); "The Dutchman" (originally aired on NBC on September 12, 1951); and "June Gould" (originally aired on NBC September 19, 1951).

In terms of counters to watch, we have Yangzijiang Maritime, after the maritime investments company said yesterday that it has signed contracts to acquire eight very large crude carrier newbuilds and sell four medium-range tankers. Elsewhere, from how Singapore’s key exports expanded by a stronger-than-expected 15.3 per cent year on year in March, to how Netflix chairman Reed Hastings is quitting the streaming service he co-founded 29 years ago, more economic and corporate headlines remained in focus. A Central Dauphin graduate and accomplished drummer who played through high school, college, and with the band Dreading Monday, Ben's lifelong love of music now fuels a mission to open doors for young musicians. The foundation provides free drum lessons, a full drum kit, and transportation for Harrisburg‑area students in grades 4–12 who want to learn but lack financial access. With applications rising, Steve and Lisa talk about the growing need, the students they're reaching, and how music can change a young person's trajectory. They also preview May Jam, coming May 16, 2026, at Royal Winery — a community concert featuring local bands, with proceeds supporting future Downbeat students.

Henry Schwartz from CBOE Global Markets covers trader volume and flows to get a sense of overall market sentiment. Options continue to remain popular, and growth is coming in “puts, not in calls,” he notes, though calls still lead. This shows more bearish interest from traders as the S&P 500 printed its worst quarter since 2022 in 1Q. Indexes and big ETFs are also seeing flows, with less focus on individual stocks. ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Options involve risks and are not suitable for all investors. Writer/director Danny Madden joins stars and co-writers Daniel Rashid, Addie Weyrich, and Arkira Chantaratananond to talk Downbeat, a "broke-wave" film about a lost soul that turns to bucket drumming and his younger sister to heal and find connection. The team digs into their collective improv that built the film's story, the central tension between pursuing art and commercializing it, and how Addie and Daniel's sibling-like bond on set unlocked one of the most heartbreaking and organic fight scenes of the festival. Plus: a cast that's almost 100% musicians, why every note of bucket drumming was recorded live, and what it means to fight for your sibling bonds and be the one who breaks the cycle of dysfunction. Since 1934, DOWNBEAT magazine has been considered by many to be the Oracle when it comes to coverage of what's going on in the world of music, especially jazz. Every January, DOWNBEAT publishes their list of the best albums from the previous year. On that coveted list for 2025 is an album from the Wild Iris Brass Band called, “Way Up,” which is the subject of this podcast episode. The Wild Iris Brass Band was co-founded by saxophonist Jeff Coffin and trombonist Ray Mason. Coffin has worked with Bela Fleck and currently with the Dave Matthews Band and is also the founder of Ear Up Records label. Mason is known for his work with Lauren Daigle and Elvis Costello and is a musician in high demand in the jazz world, as well as other music genres. “Way Up” is the debut album for the Wild Iris Brass Band and features a star-studded roster and guest appearances from Béla Fleck, Steven Bernstein, and Bob Lanzetti and others. The story behind this recording is a fascinating one as you will learn from my conversation with Jeff Coffin and Ray Mason.

Son of salsa singer Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez and godson of Fania Records bandleader Johnny Pacheco, Rodríguez cut his teeth playing with some of the greatest names in Latin music. By age 19, he was musical director of his father's band. As a vocalist, he sang on Tito Puente's Grammy-award winning Mambo Birdland. As an instrumentalist, he's appeared with legends including Celia Cruz, Chico O'Farrill, Bebo Valdez and Eddie Palmieri, including performing on the Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri Project's Grammy-winning release, Simpatico. As a bandleader, Rodriguez draws on his diverse upbringing—including living through the birth of Hip Hop in the Bronx and becoming an accomplished classical trumpeter during his adolescence in Puerto Rico—to create his own brand of jazz that defies categorization. The result is music that has been praised as "not only instrumentally ferocious, but texturally rich and at times profoundly intimate," with compositions "rich in musical depth, tone and beauty, as well as rhythm and melody… giving his music an appeal beyond genres." (Downbeat). His music demonstrates his aptitude for hard-driving, modern post-bop jazz, as much as melodic Latin variants and R&B-tinged grooves. Rodriguez has released a series of acclaimed albums as a leader, including Mind Trip, The Alchemist, Caminando con Papi (Destiny Records), El Conde Negro (Destiny Records), Obstacles (Sunnyside Records), and his most recent, I'm Pete Rodríguez, Vol. 1 (Sunnyside Records), named one of the Best of 2024 by the New York City Jazz Record. His forthcoming I'm Pete Rodríguez, Vol. 2 continues his exploration of identity, resilience, and innovation. "As a bandleader he's working on a clean, complex and flexible model of modern Latin jazz … his compositions change shape and character, according to the free flow of the arrangements, among art song and swing and clave. Draped over all of it is Mr. Rodriguez's powerful playing, soft-toned but battling." – The New York Times Episode Links: peterodriguezmusic.com Pete on Instagram (@prodriguezmusic) on YouTube (@peterodriguezmusic) on Facebook (@prodriguezmusic) Upcoming Events: Greg Black Mouthpieces, November 7 & 8 North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference, November 9 & 10 Book your alignment here!
