Schools have become sites of policing and surveillance that mirror the criminal legal system. To address this, we need to understand what our guest calls the “school-to-prison nexus,” the intersecting web of racist, carceral systems that criminalize our youth. We discuss the history of organizing against the school-to-prison pipeline and how the call for “Counselors Not Cops” needs an abolitionist framework to succeed. We also highlight important wins from decades-long fights like the recent vote to end the school resource office (SRO) program in Chicago Public Schools.Episode Guest:Erica Meiners is a writer, educator and organizer. Their recent books include For the Children? Nina Persson joins Melody A.M. for a conversation about her superb new work with the duo KITE as well as a look-back on her musical career, which spans three successful decades. Famous for being the super-charismatic lead of popular Swedish band, The Cardigans, Persson started her career with the group in Jönköping in the early 1990s. With massive international hits like “Carnival”, “Lovefool, “My Favourite Game” and “Erase / Rewind”, the band have managed to garner and maintain a significant global fanbase, whose loyalty has not waned despite the fact that the last Cardigans studio album came out in 2005.Over the years, Nina has consistently tested the tether of her creativity, complementing her Cardigans projects with solo releases, not to mention a second band she started in 2001, A Camp. Two years ago she joined James Yorkston and the Stockholm-based Second Hand Orchestra on a beautiful record called The Great White Sea Eagle, which marked something of a departure from her other releases, not merely on account of being an album recorded entirely as a live session. After years spent living in the United States, Nina's return to her homeland has deepened her connection with Sweden and, in our interview, she tells Melody A.M. about her favourite corner of the country. She also engages patiently and thoughtfully with a question she must get asked all the time: why can't we have another Cardigans studio record? Check out our Nina Persson playlist with a collection of highlights from her rich discography - you'll find it at melodyam.com/nina

Back to Basics: What to Wear at the Dog Show Veronica Wolfe from Best in Show Clothes joins host Laura Reeves to talk just basic what to wear at the dog show, how to be comfortable, how to live your own truth and still be respectful of the environment that we're in. They cover outfits for the fall weather's coming up and a little bit about good colors with your dogs and stand out versus blend in. “So, when my junior was becoming a teen and bucking the suits, I reminded her that this is a sport like any sport and every sport has a uniform,” Wolfe said. “I mean, if you're going to be in the soccer team, you get assigned a uniform and there's no, ‘oh, well, it's not my color,' too bad, you know, that's what you have to wear. But fortunately, in the dog show world, we have a little more flexibility. [caption id="attachment_13179" align="alignright" width="526"] Tall, flat heeled boots, a skirt, vest and turtleneck make a classy fall outfit.[/caption] “Looking professional is the key. Well, what does that mean in the dog show world? Classically, men will be in two -piece suits, or slacks, and maybe a tweed blazer for fall, right? And the women will either be in professional dresses or a two -piece suit, whether it's a pantsuit suit or skirt suit. That's the general uniform that you see out there. “Alternatives to blazers because we were kind of talking about dressing to your truth right so not everybody wants to be in a blazer. “I personally hate blazers. I've got broad shoulders, busty, and I'm tall. They're not my favorites. “So a lot of things I like to find and more than ever you can find stretchy fabric like this one actually has some stretch to it just look for spandex in the list of fabrics. Cardigans look great. A navy blue cardigan with a floral skirt … you can find some really nice cardigans and you can find them in every color of the rainbow “The other thing you need to consider is your movement when you choose what you're going to wear and you also need to consider what looks good with your color and your dog's color.”

Magnus Karlsson in conversation with David Eastaugh Happydeadmen were one of the first Swedish acts to have been given credit for inspiring the '90s explosion of pop acts. With the thank-you list that includes The Cardigans and Popsicle, Happydeadmen's melody of charming indie glee debuted in 1988. With their first full-length, "Eleven Pop Songs" (1990), and "Game, Set, Match" (1993) independently released, Happydeadmen would spend a part of 1995 touring Japan before their follow-up album, "Bullfights Every Sunday", came out two years later. After settling down the line-up in 1997 with Jan Hedin (vocals/guitar), Magnus Karlsson (guitar), Roger Kjellgren (bass), and Thomas Kristoffersson (drums), SummerSound Recordings eventually compiled a Happydeadmen best-of album to celebrate their ten-year existence. The fittingly titled "Happydeadmen Classics: A Decade in Pop" was released in January of 1999. ~ Mike DaRonco, Rovi Line-up: Jan Hedin - Vocals and acoustic guitar Magnus Karlsson - Electric guitar Roger Kjellgren - Bass Thomas Kristoffersson - Drums Patrik Jonsfjord - Electric guitar (1994-97)

It can be hard to be in a band, or really, in any kind of group where there's creative collaboration, and you're supposed to act like it's a democracy. Because what do you do with an idea that you love, if nobody else believes in it? That question is a big part of this episode with Local Natives. Local Natives is a band from Southern California. Their first album came out in 2009, but the three vocalists and songwriters in the band, Taylor Rice, Kelcey Ayer, and Ryan Hahn – they've been playing together since they were in high school. The lineup also includes Matthew Frazier on drums and Nik Ewing on bass. They've put out five albums, including their most recent, Time Will Wait For No One, which came out in July 2023. But for this episode, I talked to Taylor, Kelcey, and Ryan about an older song of theirs: “Dark Days,” which came out in 2016. It's their biggest song to date; it has over 100 million streams, and it's been certified gold.  It's a duet with Swedish singer Nina Persson, from The Cardigans. In  2020, they put out a new version of the song, featuring Amelia Meath from the band Sylvan Esso. I talked to the guys here in the studio, and to Amelia Meath remotely. And together, they told me the seven-year story of how “Dark Days,” was first made and then eventually remade. For more, visit songexploder.net/local-natives.
