We begin 2025 with Mike and James doing a live video space heater where James goes on a rant about the issues with the Phantom Trigger Grisaia anime Kickstarter and looks back on similar anime and manga crowdfunds over the years. Then, some CES news with Crunchyroll looking to restart their digital manga service (hot off the heels of the increased stake in Kadokawa), do some Ghosts of Tsushima live action, and VLC looking to get into the AI subtitle space. Then we come home as the pre-reg for Anime North memberships and hotels begin, and Anime Revolution makes its move on TorontoMike Nicolas and James AustinCheck out our Linktree for more links animeroundtable.com
I finally made it to Otakuthon and I already want to go back. My generous Montreal host Chris aka Kurotsuki joins me to talk about pros and cons (mostly pros) of Canada's biggest and best anime convention. We also chat a little about this year's Anime Revolution in Vancouver, and I certainly had some things to say on that.
On tonight's show... The chaos and turmoil of Colossalcon East! And what happened with Canada's Anime Revolution? Did they really let a serial harasser in the con? MechaCon Anime Convention wraps it up, Shanghai police seize bootleg anime merch, and Pokémon Masters launches this week! Also, a new Rurouni Kenshin escape game, a new Love Live! School Idol Project single, and a brand new Ghost In The Shell manga! Meanwhile in Japan, 5 free beers for your ramen, strip club booth guy gets fishy, and getting cat pics?! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/animejamsession/support
In 1997, CBC's Undercurrents ran a legendary exposé on otaku as obsessive collectors of data. It featured William Gibson, Hitoshi Doi, as well as a charming fellow with an overzealous fixation on Sailor Mercury. That fellow was Gregory Taylor, and he joins me in this episode to talk about the segment, as well Sailor Moon chat groups in the 1990s, rogue anime screenings at the University of Waterloo, anthropomorphized math concepts and his own cataloged experiences in the world of Sailor Moon online roleplaying. In a separate segment, I also talk about Anime Revolution 2019, and the unfortunate controversy surrounding the event this year. On our second night at Anime North, we’re joined by Jesse Betteridge from the Zannen.ca Podcast. He gives his impressions of Anime North, as well as recap his panels at the convention (3:40). Then we get into a longer discussion about the Anime convention scenes in both Toronto and Vancouver, and what to maybe expect from the International Fan Festival as they attempt to settle into Toronto (Vancouver’s Anime Revolution is put on by the same group). Also Jesse makes some very interesting observations between Anime North and Anime Evolution, the former Vancouver convention, and how Anime North isn’t too big on having too much of an industry presence (20:20). That sets up Norm McEvoy’s annual appearance, which explains a few things. In addition Norm reminices about AN’s early days, and how it became the institution on Dixon Rd, and likely why it works there (1:03:25). Norm also remembers Dick “The Destroyer” Beyer and his influence on Japanese Pro Wrestling and Pop Culture (1:18:35). Then to end it off, Kevin gives a promo for the Toronto Japanese Film Festival. And Mike previews the sit down conversation with Fred Schodt (taped earlier in the day) , which will be put up very soon (1:52:56) Mike Nicolas, Jesse Betteridge, Kevin Ng, with James Austin Web: animeroundtable.com Email: animeroundtable@gmail.com Twitter: @animeroundtable Check out our website for more details and links https://animeroundtable.wordpress.com/2019/05/26/6ixtalk-anime-roundtable-v2-0-11-may-25-2019/
Sarah joins me to talk about Anime Revolution 2018, including the big improvements from last year, as well as complaining about panels that pad out time with Q&A because they can't fill a full hour with proper content. Incidentally, we get through this topic in about 30 minutes, and then proceed to fill the rest of the episode with discussion about current anime shows this season. Amanda joins me to talk about this year's Anime Revolution: the only anime convention sponsored by Church's Chicken. The Vancouver con is far from the best out there, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most interesting to talk about. Hear about all of the highs and lows of the 2017 event.
Why doesn't Adult Swim seem to work outside of the United States? Does it just not translate anywhere culturally? Or is it because of corporate politics? Karl Olson (Ultraklystron) returns along with animation storyboarder Corey Barnes (who's worked on Archer, China IL, Superjail! and Axe Cop) to mull over why the subversive network has such a hard time gaining traction in international markets. We also talk about Spider Riders. 4:20 - Anime Revolution and some lessons in Spider Riders nostalgia 12:00 - All about Adult Swim
