It was definitely some weekend for us.Pat suffered the ignominy of his beloved Dundee United being relegated and Lesley braved Radio 1's Big Weekend in Camperdown Park. The music event certainly led us down down some interesting rabbit holes about fame, fans, and faux rock stars. The National also published an extract from Lesley's new book Thrive which tackles that old Scottish sporting trope of ,"It's the hope that kills you." and how it has permeated the Scot's psyche when it comes to running our own affairs, the fear of making mistakes, and the belief that somehow the fowk in charge ken best. Lesley also makes a plea for Humza Yousaf in particular and the SNP in general to embrace the campaigning efforts of Yes groups like the Chain Of Freedom. Chain of Freedom are currently putting together a website - but have a Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/5785858594826639/And a great wee video explainer herehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIZ2AvmigR0If you want to read Thrive the first print run has almost sold out, so it'll be a week before there are more in But still 50 to go on https://lesleyriddoch.com/shop-mobile/thriveLesley also took part in an Aye Write event with former Labour MSP Neil Findlay whose new book Hope and Despair which he describes as "Lifting the lid on the murky world of Scottish politics " has just been published. Her reflections on this and the position of a Corbynite socialist in a Starmer Labour Party are well worth the listen. All this plus the Viking head lump, honest it is a thing, in this week's episode. ★ Support this podcast ★
Zoe and Claire interview the brilliant author Jenni Fagan about her new book “Hex” : “ A witch will die here in the morning. It is the 4th of December 1591. On this, the last night of her life in a prison cell several floors below Edinburgh's High Street, convicted witch Geillis Duncan receives a mysterious visitor – Iris, who says she comes from a future where women are still killed for who they are and what they believe.” (Birlinn Publishers)
For the latest SWH! podcast Ali spoke to writer Angela Jackson about her novel 'The Darlings' (published by Lightning Books). Coming 7 years after Angela's acclaimed debut 'The Emergence of Judy Taylor', 'The Darlings' is a honest and insightful novel about the lasting psychological effects of childhood trauma, and our need for unconditional love. Angela goes into detail about what inspired the book, the importance of creating the central character of 'Mark', her life as a writer, the challenges she has faced, and 'casting' her books. The two also talk about Angela's upcoming Edinburgh Fringe Show 'Say If It's Not Okay', her love of performing, and what she is planning for the future. Following her recent appearance at Aye Write! it was great to catch up with Angela to dig deeper into 'The Darlings', a book which once read will not be forgotten.

We recorded this Big Interview with Alex McLeish live during the Aye Write book festival in Glasgow and, in part two, we leaf through the chapter of his management career marked player recruitment. We learn how close Alex came to bringing a certain Andres Iniesta to Rangers on loan, and the repercussions his enquiry had at the Camp Nou. Alex also explains how he was urged by his sons to sign Lionel Messi after they discovered the teenage prodigy while playing Football Manager. His time in charge at Ibrox taught Alex a great deal about signing players, something which he did not find easy to do at Birmingham City, where he worked under owners who required “sugar” when it came to agreeing transfers. Alex also reveals his passion for film - from sneaking into a cinema to watch Clockwork Orange at the age of 12, to being invited by Irvine Welsh to attend the world premiere of Trainspotting 2. Choose life. Choose to listen to this Big Interview. Enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It was a great privilege to have Alex McLeish, a real hero of mine, as the guest for the second ever live Big Interview, which we recorded at the Aye Write book festival in Glasgow. It was also my good fortune for the event to fall the day after Barcelona pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in football history - wiping out a 4-0 first-leg defeat by winning 6-1 at the Camp Nou in a truly incredible Champions League match. I couldn't pass up on the opportunity to ask Alex to give his take on that game for the first part of this podcast and uncover what it is that allows the best players to win, and keep winning. Alex then took us back to his formative years as a footballer; the constructive criticism from his father, playing games constantly at a local field and, later, training with his Aberdeen team-mates in the car park opposite Pittodrie. The Dons, of course, feature heavily in this interview and Alex talks about the success he enjoyed at the club, including how they got the better of Bayern... In a packed Podcast this week, Lesley talks about the Anti-trident rally in Glasgow and reflects on the passing of Margo MacDonald. Moving along to the Aye Write debate, Lesley locked horns with Rory Stewart the Tory MP about ‘modernity’ amongst other things. All of which took place in Glasgow which is set to ‘wow the world’ by blowing up the Red Road tower blocks – is this a good idea and a fitting way to open the Commonwealth Games? Finally we explore some of the issues around today’s Scotsman column; including the comments.
