A darkly comic satire about an increasingly deranged leader of a Western power, tensions with Russia and the threat of World War 3 breaking out – sound familiar? That's the premise of Whoops Apocalypse, the 1986 feature film very loosely based on the sitcom of the same name, created by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall. Sadly where the film fails to imitate real life is the presence of a female President in the White House and she's the (relatively) sane one, while her British counterpart (played by Peter Cook) believes unemployment is caused by pixies and is quite happy to encourage those without jobs to leap to their deaths off Beachy Head. The film also features Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), Richard Wilson, Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld), Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions. Last December for Goon Pod Film Club Tyler spoke to Renwick & Marshall at length about Whoops Apocalypse and how it all came about and he decided to share it with the general Goon Pod listeners as a bonus episode before world events rendered its plot totally tame and entirely plausible. Andrew and David talked warmly about the film and revealed how it was chiefly the lousy scheduling of their earlier television show End Of Part One which compelled them to write the Whoops Apocalypse sitcom, which in turn led to producer Brian Eastman proposing a big-screen repurposing, involving a new storyline and characters. They discussed the writing process, the challenges of casting, the difference between what made critics laugh and audiences laugh and things they wish had worked a little bit better. Goon Pod returns in late March. A special Christmas bonus edition! As part of Goon Pod Film Club - www.patreon.com/GoonPod - every month Tyler and a special guest discuss a British comedy film and in August this year Tim Worthington came to talk about his favourite: Billy Liar from 1963. Here's the full episode for Goon Pod listeners to get a taste. As you'd expect from Tim the conversation takes many twists and turns – as well as analysing the film itself, its themes and ideas, its stars, its production, its position in the pantheon of British New Wave cinema, there are also nods aplenty towards popular culture connected with the film, including Ken Russell, the Four Yorkshiremen sketch and Saint Etienne! Tom Courtenay is the titular Billy Liar, or, more accurately, William Fisher, a grammar school boy on a scholarship from a working class environment who finds himself constantly at odds with distant parents, girlfriends expecting greater commitment, a mocking colleague and a rather foolish boss. He is a provincial dreamer with aspirations to better himself but is somewhat lacking the drive. Prone to lapsing into fantasies in which he is a big wheel in a fictional state called Ambrosia, Billy's doing a job he hates working as a clerk in a funeral directors firm. However, he almost finds a way out of it all,  a chance to escape and spread his wings and soar, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shake off the cloying ordinariness of his Northern town and leave it all behind. Other films covered on GPFC this year include A Hard Days Night, Carry On Screaming and Guest House Paradiso! For a free 7-day trial of Goon Pod Film Club head over to patreon.com/GoonPod

Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.This is a collection of highlights from Looks Unfamiliar featuring Suzy Robinson on Crown Court, Danny Kodicek on Fox Tales, Bob Fischer and Georgy Jamieson on Why Don't You...?, Paul Abbott on Disneytime Rotadraw, Genevieve Jenner on Fruitopia, Adam S. Leslie on I Heard Your Name by Martin Rev and Justin Lewis on I Hate J.R. by The Wurzels. Along the way we'll be revealing when BBC Test Card F might actually be your less terrifying viewing option, listening to a 1970s heroin-y version of They Might Be Giants, arguing over whether the best Catatonia album was the first one or the first one, assessing the best way to draw TV's Simon And Simon, remaking the Bitter Sweet Symphony video with the bloke out of The Wurzels, speculating on the efficacy of Kiss-Me-Quick-Hats sported by popular television puppets, revisiting Jamiroquai's duet with some puppet caterpillars, soliciting The Jesus And Mary Chain's theories on Who Shot J.R.?, organising a day trip to the exact spot where Roland Rat pushed Kevin The Gerbil down a hill, shuddering at the thought of The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow's most repulsive exhibit and and revealing why the hippy trail is strewn with striking dustbins, cough medicine and Crown Court. Plus there's tips on how Blanco from Porridge can help your party go with a swing! Also there's extracts from Tim talking about Billy Liar on Goon Pod Film Club, Now - The Summer Album on Back To Now and George Martin's By George! on The Big Beatles Sort Out, and an extra bit of Bob and Georgy questioning Will Smith's approach to summertime scheduling...You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at timworthington.org.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. John Rain & Paul Litchfield join Tyler to discuss Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's 1978 adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes story, an attempt to make a hit mainstream comedy but which failed to find an audience. Mostly owing to it not being very good. Directed by American Paul Morrissey this was the first major film project he made without the involvement of Andy Warhol. Rather bizarrely Morrissey was a fan of the Carry On films and he was keen to bring that sort of humour to the screen, enlisting Kenneth Williams to play Sir Henry Baskerville and stuffing it full of familiar faces from the world of British comedy. The result was a bit of a mess, with indoor fog and urinating dogs small compensation for proper belly laughs but there is still plenty to talk about and some titters among the dross. It's not a complete dog of a film. And why are we covering it on Goon Pod? Why, for the small scene-stealing cameo from Spike Milligan as a policeman. Enjoy! Many thanks to the wonderful Jonathan Roberts for this episode's artwork! There's also a taster of August's edition of Goon Pod Film Club, in which Tim Worthington talks Billy Liar! Screw is back for season two, so our Hannah took the chance to get Nina on the Zoom to chat about, well, being on the Zoom, putting the prison uniform back on, those ‘difficult' women and the strikes in America.Jen's chatting to Dr Friederike Otto, senior lecturer in climate science, about climate change and angry weather – which, coincidentally, is also the name of her new book. And in Jenny Off the Blocks, Jen's rightly raging about Rubiales while also redressing the balance. And in Rated or Dated, the team visits a time capsule set in the north (so, spoiler, Mick's delighted), as we watch Sir Tom Courtenay deliver performance magic in 1963 British New Wave classic, Billy Liar.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. This week's guest is a terrific character actor with over thirty years in the industry. A veteran of more than seventy Hollywood movies and hundreds of episodes of television, Donal Logue is the beloved scene-stealer of such films as Sneakers, Blade, and Zodiac, and TV series as Grounded for Life, Sons of Anarchy, Vikings, Gotham, and of course, the great Terriers, which Jed Ayres and I celebrated earlier this year in a full episode. Additionally, the recipient of the Special Jury Prize for Outstanding Acting at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival for the indie favorite The Tao of Steve, Donal also has quite the passion and talent for writing. In 2021, he co-wrote the brilliant New York Times bestseller Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, & Hollywood, along with his good friend Danny Trejo. Currently hard at work on his next book, Donal has just been added to the third season of the popular Queen Latifah CBS series The Equalizer, which I'm looking forward to checking out. Needless to say, he's a very busy guy! Someone I'm honored to have gotten to know after the Terriers episode, Donal has not only become a very good friend but has also consistently given me the best film recommendations, including several that we discuss in this fascinating episode. In a thoughtful roughly two-hour conversation, Donal shares his affection for the gritty, social realism centric tales of the so-called "angry young men" that took the world by storm in the UK Kitchen Sink Drama movement of theater and film in the late 1950s and early '60s. Focusing primarily on Look Back in Anger, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Billy Liar, This Sporting Life, Kes, A Taste of Honey, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, and The Entertainer, this is an episode to listen to with a pen and a pad of paper as masterful films get cited throughout. With sharp insights about acting, filmmaking, and storytelling from his perspective as a film fan first and a professional second, this engaging chat is a treat for cinephiles everywhere. I love a good ghost story. So, I’ve gathered eight of them here, told by the people that experienced these paranormal phantasms. This one features a star-studded cast of creeps, including - Billy Liar (solo artist), Ryan Disney (no, not THAT Disney), Jesse Wagner (The Aggrolites & UXB), Amanda Paulson (Pretty FN Spooky blog and YouTube channel), Fernando Cruz (Run For Your Fucking Life, Bumbklaatt), Mitch Wilson (No Knife, Funeral March), Greg Hetson (Bad Religion, Circle Jerks) and Ron Martinez (Final Conflict, Lower Class Brats). Each story is incredible - from a “Hat Man” story (look it up - scary!!!), to a kid who spent part of his youth living in a graveyard, to phantom footsteps and bellmen from beyond the grave, I’m telling you, this episode has the best ghost stories I’ve ever heard. There is music, as always, of course. Billy Liar with the song “The Ghosts Of Punk Rock”, UXB with “Night Marchers, No Knife with “Hit Man Dreams” and Dear Boy with a cover of the Psychedelic Furs song “The Ghost In You”. Did you catch all the songs sorta-kinda reference ghosts? Good job, you’re paying attention! One last thing before you go to the light - if you let me know via social media (search on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter “I Wanna Party With Bob”) which story is your favorite, you can win a t-shirt from Discount Cemetery and a gorgeously gruesome zippo lighter and case from Wicked Monster Workshop! Happy Labor Day! Ever wonder why we have a Labor Day holiday in the USA and Canada? Wonder no more, here is the answer! I’ll cover the history behind Labor Day, a little of the history of the American Labor Movement and a bit about the rise and fall of Labor Unions in the USA up to current times. Hint - rich folks hate unions, because of course they do. Most rich folks throughout history seem to have issues with the people that made them rich, right? Let me talk to you about that and more in this episode! Songs are by Arthur Bell, Billy Liar, The Drowns and Chixdiggit. Yes, the songs are all about work. Bonus! The story and some thoughts of the folklore hero John Henry are also in this episode. Take it easy, crack open a cold one and let ME do all the work for a little bit.

In this week's Goodie, Nadeem recommends the 1963 classic British New Wave movie 'Billy Liar'. A really inspirational and heart warming and lovely little film, 'Billy Liar' centres around young Billy Fisher, a lad who feels stifled in his humdrum Yorkshire life. To escape from this mundane day-to-day grind, Billy fantasizes constantly, and lies a lot, and sort-of two-times two very different women. A really nice movie for anyone who ever feels like they aren't living up to their potential in life. So that's ALL OF US, I say, ALL OF US!

We typically split our reads in half and record two episodes per book here on the pod, but Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse was such a quick read that we felt one episode would do the job. The story is in the title, Billy is a liar. He’s a 19 year old who is living at home with his parents and grandmother, working at a job he hates, dreaming of being a comedy writer. Even though this book was published in 1959, it sounds like your typical kid of today. But, the thing that sets Billy apart is that he just can’t tell the truth. To anyone. About anything. And eventually, he gets found out. He finds his own life so mundane and so miserable that he escapes to a world he’s created in his mind, and he does so quite often. He even has two types of thinking, once that’s factual and one that’s pure fantasy. Will Billy finally be true to his family? Will he finally be true to either of his fiancés? Will he finally be true to the girl he loves (not a fiancé, by the way)? Will he finally be true to himself? Listen to the pod, and find out! Oh! And April found a brilliant Bowie song to pair with this book! It’s perfect! And we are almost certain that Bowie had this book in mind when he wrote it. What song, you ask? Have a listen, and let us know what you think! ………………………………………………… P.S. As Halloween approaches, suddenly Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve all come in rapid succession. This is our last episode of the year! Thank you so much for listening and being a part of our book club. We are having so much fun making our way through Bowie’s reading list, and we hope you are too! We’ll be back with a new episode featuring All The Emperor’s Horses by David Kidd on January 7th! Until then, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Sometimes you feel like you have unfinished business after an interview ends. That's kinda how I felt the last time I interviewed Billy, even though it was almost 50 minutes long. People and their situations change, and Billy has done a whole bunch of stuff since our last interview, including immigrating to Berlin, which I hear is a lovely place.I enjoy it when podcasters interview the same person multiple times, particularly when it takes place over a number of years. If you're lucky, and it's someone the interviewer has hit it off with in the past, it feels like two old friends reconnecting. I also feel it often demonstrates the way both the host and the guest have changed over the years. This year, despite living in Berlin, Billy is doing a play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I've kept in touch with him since our first chat, and as a result we've actually become friends, so this interview is also something of a catch up. With him being out the country and me always somehow being busy whenever he is in the country, I thought it was about damn time we talk about all the cool shit he's been doing.Including his most recent tour, which is when I conducted this interview. We talk about it throughout this episode, but this is the first time Billy has played with a full band in a number of years, and it was the first time I'd ever seen him with a full band. It was pretty spectacular. His backing band were also the main support on the tour, and those guys (Empty Lungs, a powertrio from Belfast) were absolute heroes for pulling double duty every night of their European and UK tours.Billy's got a new album coming out next year, and I can tell you for a goddamn fact that, based on the show I saw him play after this interview, it's gonna be a cracker.A wee note about the recording – I recorded this in my car (!) and without headphones, so you're gonna hear some traffic noise. I don't think it's too distracting though, and the interview is nice and clear anyway!I hope you enjoy it. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. The story of Billy's real life in a semi somewhere in the West Riding, and his vividly imagined alternative life in Ambrosia, lived to the accompaniment of a brass band, was unlike any film that had come before, but was it tragedy or comedy? By the end of that night, my throat was finished, and for week afterwards I was a hoarse, croaky mess. But we're back in action now.I have noticed that inconsistency has decimated my podcast listening figures. So if you could share this I would be forever in your debt.On this episode I speak to the one and only Acey Slade. He has been in many bands over the years, most famously the Murderdolls and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. He was also in Dope, Trashlight Vision, Acey Slade and the Dark Party, and now he's a one man army. Something of a nomad, you could say. A musician without a place to rest his head. Constant movement seems good. Being a hired gun is more fulfilling in the long term, I think. You can always go back and focus on your own stuff, and your own vision, but people trust you to help realise their vision. It's that trust which I find fascinating.Bands are tight knit units, and it's difficult to enter into one of those situations as a new guy. I have a colossal amount of respect for those who are able to do that and keep doing it.I used to play Murderdolls songs with my first ever band when I was 16. That's a good 14 years ago now. Acey may not have directly played on the first Murderdolls record, but he was there and he lived it. When I saw them live, he was the guitar player. He was responsible for transmitting that music straight into my brain. It was a formative influence but an important one. That's why there's a Murderdolls song in this episode.Billy Liar helped me set up this interview. I had such a good time chatting to both of them. Some cool hangs afterwards too, although I did get a sense that I was outstaying my welcome. Sometimes I forget that I'm socially awkward. Afterwards, when I reflected on the interview and the time we spent together after it, I began to realise that perhaps the medication I used to take for anxiety had more than just the obvious effects, but also much more subtle ones too. I don't feel like I need it anymore but I do feel like part of me has changed since coming off it. Maybe that'll go away. Or maybe that's just who I am.This episode is a diamond, I think. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's great to get back to some semblance of normality after the Christmas break. I feel like I'm enthusiastic about the podcast again.Which is in no small part down to this excellent interview with Fraser from The Murderburgers. If you like punk rock and you live in Scotland then there's about a 90% you know who these guys are. They play everywhere and are on the road all the damn time. They really embody the DIY punk spirit that the whole ethos of “punk” was built on. The fact that they do it with catchy pop punk really is just a huge bonus.I'd been trying to arrange this interview for a while, as Fraser would no doubt tell you, but it took a while for the stars to align, as it were.It was definitely worth waiting for, I think.Highlights include:Restlessness and not staying in one place too long leading to wanting to be on the road a lotThe difficulty of finding a balance between touring and doing normal stuff, then eventually giving up on finding the balanceGetting more enjoyment out of life by doing band and label stuffHaving bad luck in the bandIncluding bad luck on their recent UK and European tourVan issues and a dodgy car dealerAndy from Palm Reader saves the day!Sharing musical gearFirst musical momentsGetting involved with DIY punk and staying involvedUsing booking agents and booking your own toursThe weirdness of “competition” betweenThe change in music over the yearsEvil pay to playPop punk and the difference between Screeching Weasel, Teenage Bottlerocket and more sorta Four Year Strong kind of stuffWhy the band is still a "we" and not a solo project despite having so many lineup changes and Fraser being the songwriterWrestlers in Space! And lots moreLast week's interviewee Billy Liar and this week's interviewee Fraser are really good friends, so it was kind of serendipitous that I was able to interview them both back to back. They're both cut from the same cloth too, in terms of their approach to music, their dedication and their ethos.Perhaps the next time I talk to them I should interview them together…I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed the chat. I'm glad you're still with me. The last episode was a blinder, and despite having a two week break it still seems people are digging the podcast. Thank you for sticking around. We're back to normal this week and it's episode 30. Bloody hell.On this episode I speak to Billy Liar who is among some of the most talented singer songwriters in Scotland right now. I'd never met the guy before, but it was great to hang out and shoot the shit with him. He's a very lovely, intelligent and thoughtful guy. I'm a big fan of punk infused folk, or folk infused punk, or whatever you want to call it. So having a Scottish take on it certainly warms my cold little heart. This interview takes place in a pub in Glasgow's city centre, meaning that the whole chat is sort of enveloped in the sort of low mummer of hundreds of voices speaking at once. I like the ambience it gives. We had a couple of pints and decided to talk about music and creativity. I found it fascinating. I hope you do too.Highlights include:Always wanting to play music and writing songs before even realising he could play songsForming his first band and playing shows in school, community centres and church hallsSeeing The Offspring for the first timeThe dangers of comparing your life to someone else as everyone grows old and grows away from musicAFI and Caffeine and how that opened up punk for both of usCaffeine's DIY CD and Billy's first experience of a DIY bandWhy he went soloApproaching every recording differently, and not trying to write into a genreHow it's taken a while to get to the point where other people are asking him to do thingsWaits, Cash, Springsteen and musical storytellers being an influenceThe influence of authors on his songwriting processFirst songs being influenced by conversations on MSN MessengerFinding a balance between songwriting and storytelling in musicCreativity as catharsis – the need to get certain feelings out“I don't believe in a soul really, but it do believe it's possible to write based on the influences in your life if you manage to get onto that perfect wavelength where the thing comes through you.”Writing more stuff based on charactersHis new split with Paper Rifles and the reason that came aboutDuring my Christmas break I toyed with the idea of doing this podcast in seasons, ending season one with episode 30 and then picking it up again later in 2016. I've decided against that – for now – but I'd love to know your thoughts on this. Would seasons be better?  It does take off the pressure of having to churn out content week after week…Featured MusicIntro: Voodoo Puppets – Electric Chair Blues (used under CC licence, you can check it out here).Billy Liar - All I've GotBilly Liar - WordsBilly Liar - ChangeI make no claim to the copyright of any of the music in this episode.LinksAll of Billy's music is available on bandcamp and is, I believe, worth every penny. You can also follow him on Twitter and Facebook. 50 years since 'Billy Liar' was released Samira Ahmed talks to one of the film's stars, Helen Fraser, and film historian Melanie Williams to discuss its role in British cinema. When it comes to success and leadership, are those who are extroverted given an unfair advantage? Susan Cain, who argues the power of the introvert is undervalued, Julia Hobsbawm, the business woman dubbed the "Queen of Networking", and the cultural historian Henry Hitchings discuss. Sarah Kent talks about the artist Ellen Gallagher's new exhibition, AxMe. And Michael Burleigh argues the collapse of colonial empires after World War II led to countless vicious power struggles and that the consequences of distant wars are still with us.

When reality comes crashing in to call, you've got to be prepared for a re-think. It's what happens to 'Billy Liar', in another dazzling English rose, the movie "Billy Liar" from 1963. It's based on a novel then a play, but the visuals bring it home. A man of 19, who flees from his life, for his life, into a fantasy world, begins to falter, then crumble, in the face of reality. (O Lucky Man! -- at age 19, to begin to see.) Like the English city in which he lives, in which every building seems to be being bulldozed in service of urban renewal, 'Billy Fisher' -- Billy Liar -- is watching "everything go". "Not one stone" (of his plummeting life) "will be left on stone". There's help, however, in the form of a girl, a precious girl, who is able to care and not care. She's the hope! She knows something Billy doesn't, and few do. Can she save our phantastic hero? Could she save you? Listen to "Twisterella". Or rather, see "Billy Liar", and SEE.
