Perennials Plant Once, Harvest for Life | Episode 601 Growing food is one of the most important survival skills you can develop. A garden can feed your family, give you independence, and reduce your reliance on fragile supply chains. But let's be honest — gardens can also be a lot of work. Planting every year, maintaining beds, watering, fertilizing, harvesting. It takes time and effort. So what if you could plant something once and harvest from it for years or even decades? Today we're talking about perennials you plant once and harvest for life. Fruit Trees: Long-Term Food Security Fruit trees are one of the best investments you can make in a long-term food system. Apples, pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries — once established they can produce food for decades with relatively little maintenance. The key advice here is simple: grow what you actually like to eat. If you love apples, plant apples. If you love peaches, plant peaches. But there's another opportunity here that many people overlook. Instead of growing the same varieties you see in grocery stores, grow unusual or specialty varieties. There are thousands of apple varieties alone. Some have unique flavors, unusual colors, or striking appearances. Things like pink-fleshed apples or deep purple varieties can stand out in farmers markets and command a higher price. If you’re going to plant trees that will produce for decades, you might as well plant something interesting. Avoid Monocropping Another reason to grow multiple varieties is resilience. If you plant twenty identical apple trees and a pest or disease hits that specific variety, you could lose your entire orchard. By planting different varieties, you reduce the risk and increase the overall resilience of your system. It also extends your harvest window since different varieties ripen at different times. Berry Bushes: Easy Perennial Calories Berry bushes are another excellent perennial food source. Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries can produce fruit year after year once established. Many of them spread naturally and become even more productive over time. They're also easy to harvest and can fit into small spaces. Some berry bushes can even serve as natural barriers. Thorny plants like blackberries and raspberries can help deter animals or even people from wandering through certain areas. That means your food production can also double as a defensive landscape feature. Asparagus: A Perennial Vegetable Most vegetables are annuals, meaning you have to plant them every year. Asparagus is one of the rare exceptions. Once established, an asparagus patch can produce for 15–20 years or more. It takes a few years to get going, but once it does, it comes back every spring and keeps producing. It's one of the best “plant once, harvest for years” foods you can grow. Rhubarb and Perennial Herbs Rhubarb is another tough perennial plant that comes back year after year. It produces large stalks that can be used in pies, jams, and preserves. It's cold-tolerant and very hardy, making it a good option in many climates. Herbs are another category that often comes back year after year. Plants like mint, oregano, thyme, chives, and rosemary can continue growing season after season with minimal effort. Growing herbs at home saves money and keeps fresh flavor available anytime you need it. Instead of buying a bunch of herbs and letting half of it rot in the refrigerator, you can simply step outside and cut what you need. Nut Trees: High-Calorie Survival Food Finally, we have nut trees. Pecans, walnuts, and chestnuts produce calorie-dense foods that can feed people for generations. Nuts contain healthy fats and protein — things that can be harder to obtain in survival situations. Unlike annual crops, these trees can produce for decades or even longer, making them an excellent long-term investment for a food-producing landscape. Chestnuts are particularly interesting historically. The American chestnut once dominated forests across the eastern United States before blight nearly wiped it out. Today people are working to restore blight-resistant varieties, while Chinese chestnuts remain widely available and productive. Building a Perennial Food System The biggest takeaway from today's episode is simple. Annual gardens are great, but perennial food systems are powerful. Plant trees. Plant berry bushes. Plant herbs that come back every year. Add asparagus, rhubarb, and nut trees. These plants reduce your workload while increasing long-term food production. And the sooner you plant them, the sooner they start producing. Because when it comes to perennial food systems, the best time to plant them was yesterday. The second best time is today. Website: Freegospelassembly.comYoutube: Free Gospel Church Assembly of GodMain Texts: 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 (especially verse 8, three times Paul pleaded means continually, over a period of time)Isaiah 38:4-6 (Hezekiah's experience of pleading prayer while God answers differently.)The main point illustrated in both thorny incidences is that God permits varied situation and that He promises to always answer our prayers, but He reserves the right to answer differently and in His time.God, our heavenly Father, will always respond to His children's cries: Matthew 7:7-12, “Continue to ask, seek, knock, and that He will answer us” is guaranteed but in His time and manner.Paul's “thorn in the flesh”: Satan is permitted to attack Paul, to prevent human conceit and pride. Consider Paul's extraordinary spiritual experiences and revelations (2Corinthians 12:1-7) and the danger of opening him up spiritual pride similar to those labeled by him as “super apostles” (2Corinthians 12:11-12), that were attacking him in Corinth. And while Paul didn't like it and prayed continuously (3 times) for God to lift it, God answered powerfully but differently, note verses 8 & 9.We don't know the nature of Paul's thorn, whether it was physical, spiritual, etc., it was serious enough for Paul to turn to continual pleading, and for Paul, relief came in several parts.Through a powerful prophetic word or oracle from God, whether directly or through another prophet, it is not known, but it was a powerful verse 8.It wasn't just a word or message but also a transfer of Holy Spirit power verse 9… Christ's power rests upon him to mitigate his thorny situation. This experience was so powerful that it ended in acceptance and worship verses 9 & 10.God's answer alleviated Paul in his weakened condition not only psychologically but practically, experientially; so that in the midst of his weakened state he became strong in the Lord.Hezekiah's pleading in Isaiah 38:1-6 was definitely a physical issue; it was an oracle of death delivered by Isaiah. And his pleading was intense and within a shorter amount of time.It started after an emphatic message from God through Isaiah verses 1-2.He turns to the Lord, in spite of Isaiah's word, and pleads for deliverance and healing verses 2-3.God responds in His manner and time: for Hezekiah it seems to be soon after his pleading: did God changed His mind (verses 4-6)? Also appended to God's answer to Hezekiah's answer was His merciful intervention for Jerusalem from their Assyrian oppressors (verse 6).It also ends in worship: see Hezekiah's Psalm of deliverance in Isaiah 38:9-20.In conclusion, Jesus pleaded with His father at Gethsemane and His father answered that while He would have to go to the cross, to atone for the sins of humanity, He will experience healing and victory through His Resurrection, Ascension, and Coronation as “Lord”: For all three, in their weakness, they experienced as an answer to their pleading, the strength of the Lord. They pleaded, He answered in His time and manner.AMEN

The narrative changes gears considerably in the last two chapters of Joshua. We get "the years passed" and mention that "Joshua was now very old", and it is clearly a conclusion to the story of this mighty leader. It is interesting to notice the ways in which Joshua himself can't easily see how emphases might change as God continues to lead his people. This entirely normal human limitation is perhaps just as true of any generation, and we are intrigued by the way Old Testament history proves God is more gracious than Joshua imagined.
Ellen Coyne and Jack Horgan-Jones join Hugh to look back on the week in politics:Next week Fianna Fáil will get the long-awaited review into the circumstances around Jim Gavin's disastrous presidential campaign. Has the wait taken the sting out of the issue for Micheal Martin? The Government is worried about political fallout if it fails to vote against the EU's Mercosur trade deal. But any such vote could be purely symbolic. Another thorny issue for the coalition: lengthy waiting lists for assessments of need, the process by which children with additional needs are assigned educational supports. The situation has long been untenable but the proposed solution is also controversial. Hugh addresses some of the many comments that have come in about Wednesday's interview with Eoin Lenihan. Minister Patrick O'Donovan wants Ireland to move ahead of the EU to restrict how younger teenagers access social media. And finally the panel pick their favourite Irish Times journalism of the week. In the twelfth episode of "The Mystery of Seeds," Duane Sheriff teaches on the parable of the sower, explaining the four types of ground where God's Word can be sown and Satan's specific strategies to steal the seed from each type of heart. The wayside ground represents hard-packed soil, similar to how sin hardens our hearts through deception. Satan steals the Word immediately by sowing confusion and lack of understanding. Stony ground refers to those who initially receive God's Word with joy but don't allow it to take root. Satan attacks through tribulation and persecution, leading to offense and causing them to abandon the seed. His primary tactic is to uproot good seed and replace it with bitterness. Thorny ground is choked by the cares of this world. Even powerful seeds cannot produce a fruitful harvest when competing with worries and worldly distractions.Guard your heart against the enemy's tactics by becoming good ground, soil that receives God's Word, takes deep root, and produces an abundant harvest of thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold. The Mystery of Seeds - Duane Sheriff Ministries
Us against the redcoats. That's how we often think of the American Revolution. In Ken Burns' latest film, scheduled to drop later this month on PBS, the acclaimed documentarian takes on that simplistic notion of the nation's founding and many others. The revolution was actually a civil war, Burns says, one that pitted Americans, including indigenous and Black folk, against each other as much as the British. So, what were the divisions among the inhabitants of the British colonies and their neighbors? How did they flare into war? How did a fledgling nation with no central government or standing army defeat the world's largest empire? And what were the contributions of indigenous and Black people and women? Philip C. Mead, PhD '12, former chief historian and head curator of the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, weighs in.

SERMON NOTES“That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.” The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “ ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.”Matthew 13:1-16 NIV“As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.”Matthew 13:4 NIVJesus explains that this is those who hear but do not understand: Satan snatches them away“Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. Statistics say that 23% of Americans are currently living with some form of mental illness. For most people, that calls for reaching out for help and receiving treatment and advice on management. But if you're an FAA-approved airline pilot, disclosing that you have something like a depressive disorder or an anxiety problem can mean a temporary pause or permanent end to your entire career. Of course, having a mental illness, not disclosing or getting treatment, and flying anyway presents a variety of problems as well. In this episode, Jim talks about the habit of some deponents of qualifying their answers by using words like think, feel, believe, and presume. These words are known in academic and psychological circles as "linguistic hedges." They're common and harmless in social conversations. But in the unforgiving world of sworn testimony, they create a record suggesting witnesses don't know what they're talking about. Not only do hedges diminish the force of testimony, but they can render it entirely inadmissible. In the wrap-up, Jim provides specific practice strategies for impressing upon clients that the lax and incautious use of hedges can inflict grievous harm on their claims or defenses. He also explains how to train clients to avoid using hedges when testifying.SHOW NOTESStrategic Use Of (UN)certainty Expressions, Lorson, Cummins and Rohde, Frontiers in Communications, Mar. 18, 2021, https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/communication/articles/10.3389/fcomm.2021.635156/fullThe Use of Hedging in Research Articles on Applied Linguistics, Livytska, I., Journal of Language and Cultural Education (July 2019), https://sciendo.com/article/10.2478/jolace-2019-0003Hedging and Academic Writing: An Analysis of Lexical Hedges, Demir, C., Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies, 14(4) (2018), https://www.jlls.org/index.php/jlls/article/view/812Linguistic Hedging In The Light Of Politeness Theory, Vlasyan, G., European Proceedings of Social and Behavioural Sciences (2018), https://www.europeanproceedings.com/article/10.15405/epsbs.2018.04.02.98A Study of Hedges in Courtroom Oral Arguments from the Perspective of Contextual Adaption, Chen and Zhang, International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Publications, https://ijmrap.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IJMRAP-V4N8P114Y22.pdfHedging in Courtroom Discourse, Lebedeva and Gribanova, http://ial-journal.org/en/node/53Middleton v. Feb. 9, 2010) report and recommendation adopted, Order Granting Summary Judgment for Defendants, Hinkle, J., [Doc. 109] (“Plaintiff's statement as incorporated in doc. 93-3 is signed under penalty of perjury, although each material statement of fact is an equivocating statement beginning with "Upon information and belief . . . ." Such a statement is not sufficient as evidence and is inadmissible in its present form. A declaration expressing that statements are "true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief" carries with it the plain implication that the affiant does not know whether the statements are true or not, and does not wish to be held accountable if they are not.6 While admittedly the phrase "best of my knowledge and belief" or "information and belief" is a part of common speech, it equivocates and, therefore, does not meet the requirements of Rule 56(e) that an affidavit "be made on personal knowledge" and "show affirmatively that the affiant is competent to testify to the matters stated therein." Rule 56(e)'s personal knowledge requirements prevents such statement "from raising genuine issues of fact sufficient to defeat summary judgment." Pace v. As feng shui professionals, our hope is to help people manifest spaces that nurture and support them. We don't really like the word mistake or its click bait-y connotations. Anyone making the effort to invite more harmony and balance into their life is already on the right track, and the theme of today's episode isn't so much a list of mistakes that people make, but rather a list of commonly overlooked opportunities for growth within the home. Sometimes the solution to many of our obstacles is right in front of us, and today's episode is a list of tips to help see those opportunities more clearly.Discussed in this episode:-Why you may want to start small and simple-Why you should avoid dried, sick flowers and plants-Broken or obscured mirrors-Blocked doors-Beds without headboardsand much more!Download our free bagua e-kitThanks so much for listening to the Holistic Spaces Podcast brought to you by Mindful Design Feng Shui School!-Sign up for our newsletter for exclusive complimentary special workshops and offers for our newsletter subscribers ONLY! -Make sure you're following us on Instagram for feng shui tips and live Q&A's.-Learn about our courses and certification on our website at: Mindful Design School.-Check out our older episodes on our Holistic Spaces Podcast archive.MORE QUESTIONSHire one of our Mindful design school Grads for a 1-1 consultation. They still have not restocked wet cat food, in fact I'm not even sure I saw the individual cups. They did have a normal amount of toilet paper. The chocolate I like was back in stock after being gone last week, but there wasn't much of it. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39 (the tag was back); eggs: $2.15 (-); whole milk: $2.88; heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.99; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $3.59 (-); sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $4.49. I did check the online price of a 2x4x8 at Home Depot, and it is still $3.85. A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Frugality Tip Halloween is my favorite holiday. We have a big Halloween party every year. I try to pick the theme in advance and then start gathering decorations when Halloween items go on clearance. For Halloween clearance shopping this year (so far) we got $300 retail value of items for less than $100. So hit the stores after the holiday and get more bang for your buck. Happy savings y'all Operation Independence Cheese Class and Other Events Main topic of the Show: Five Oft-Overlooked Preps For The Homesteader With all the unrest in the economy, looming worldwide war, accelerating technology and the push from the ruling class (for lack of a better term) to keep we peons unhealthy, just in debt enough that we are too scared to go our own way, and obsessed with the “two” options that are the “only” options so that we fight with ourselves instead of see the true enemy, is it any wonder that, more and more, people want to get out of the cities and homestead? In a disaster a homestead is where you want to be, right? When you homestead, you go all in on Bugging In. 2 is 1 Appalachia and resilience - it's not just that it is rural. It is forgotten, abused, walked on, and easily cut off so people there rely on one another already Typical homestead journey: chickens, garden, canning, wood heat, bigger livestock, hobbies like spinning or woodworking or whatnot. Homesteaders have food covered - sort of. When was the last time you went to the feed store? Mindset shift: prepare for the most likely problems, not wwIII and you will weather wwIII better than if you “prepare” for it. FIVE OVERLOOKED PREPS Medical: Supplies for humans and livestock TRAINING, EDC - what do you have on you, Organization Bugging Out: Your plan is to bug in. Heck, my plan is to bug in. What is your plan if you have to leave quickly? Where are you going? How are you getting there? What will you use to travel? What about your livestock? Security: Beyond carrying a gun. TRAINING. What is the plan (who does what) if there is a two legged threat. What about four legged problems? How hard is it to get to your place? (Thorny hedges, security fencing, etc) Do you know when someone is coming? Can you fight if you have to? Like can you really? Food for livestock: Be honest. What is the plan? What is it if you can't just fall back on TSC? How do you regenerate the food? And be honest? How much do you rely on the grocery store for humans. (Community Connections/Underground Network) Fitness: Can you do everything needed by hand? Are you healthy? What is your plan to get healthy? Is everyone in your family fit? (Dedicated space, nutrition, living apothecary,) Communication (Bonus item): Does everyone KNOW what the plans are, know where things are, also get training, know how to communicate if you bug in vs bug out? As a homesteader you are likely more prepared in many ways than preppers in the city with lots of stuff and no skills, but how do we weather things for real? By getting better one day at a time and by eating the frog that we are avoiding so that we dont end up in a situation where we need a skill we could have built and we just didnt because it was distasteful. Make it a great week! GUYS! Don't forget about the cookbook, Cook With What You Have by Nicole Sauce and Mama Sauce. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we have another encore edition with guest Ron DeFore, whose father Don DeFore was known to classic TV fans as Thorny on the show The Adventures of Ozzy and Harriet. It's a nice bookend with the recent interview we did with Sam Nelson, Rick Nelson's son a few months back talking about that iconic 50s show. What's more, Ron's mother was singer Marion Holmes and we hear from Ron about how his parents met as well as her career as well which has a fun bit of trivia in there you won't want to miss. Disneyland fans will especially love this episode as we discuss how Don Defore was the only celebrity to have a branded store in Disneyland which happened only because of his friendship with Walt Disney himself. We hear about the Don DeFore Silver Banjo Barbeque, how the recipe came about and where the signage ended up. Disneyana buffs will be in hog heaven on this one….BBQ hog heaven that is. What's more we discuss the book Ron wrote about literally growing up in Disneyland which you can still purchase as an autographed copy at (get this) www.growingupindisneyland.com. It's quite the story about literally growing up in the “Happiest Place on Earth” that we touch on quite a bit on this episode. Along the way we hear stories about President Ronald Reagan, John Lennon, a DJ stint as Captain Disco, the T.V. show The Odd Couple, long lost LA restaurant favorites & much more. So take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
