The Friel Sisters were the focus. Here in Ames, Iowa it happens that we have a Friel Drive. It isn't as lovely as the Friel Sister's voices and the instrumentation which accompanies them. You asked for a picture of what we are doing while listening. Mine is attached." Mike Sigler emailed a couple photos: “Hi Mark, Mike Sigler here.  I've been listening to your podcast regularly for a while now and have been meaning to write for almost as long. So what have I been up to: I've been running sound for a little Celtic music dinner concert series at The Old Brogue Falls Church Virginia, one of the several Irish pubs in the Washington DC area.  The series runs in the Fall and the Spring and consists of two dinner seatings and a wonderful performance of Celtic music.  I've been running sound for them for about two years (a new skill for me) and have been having a blast. I've attached pictures of the groups from the last two concerts, one by Jug of Punch (Pat Egan (Guitar), Sharon Knowles (Harp), Tabby Finchan (Key Board), John Knowles (Fiddle)) and the other by Charlie Zahm and Tadd Marks.  We've got three more concerts coming up this fall and I'm very much looking forward to them. Thanks for all you do – your show keeps reminding me to play and engage where I can (even if I seem to always find out about the local festivals only after they are over!). Best,"   Jeremiah Donier emailed an image: "Marc, I love your podcast and music. After visiting your merch website today and getting a free CD, I think you can use more designs. Attached is something I created based on the "Some Like it Scot" photo by Rich Johnson, https://www.pinterest.com/pin/176766354114786077/. I reached out to the photographer for his permission to design this and was given the okay. So, I wanted to create something fun and uplifting for the New Year with the saying "Up with Kilts! Down with Pants." I can add your logo too and whatever else you want to see (except for what's under the kilt of course  -  he he!). I can provide a vector file so it can be printed and scaled to whatever size is needed for the podcast's merchandise. This is free because I don't have much money to contribute, you give so much joy to the podcast listeners, and it is my small way of saying thanks for being so wonderful. Let me know what you think. Sláinte!"

The European Championships are in full swing not only on the pitch but off it too. In Part 1, we pick out three themes from the opening stages of the tournament in Germany that have made us laugh: food wars, culture craziness & online polls/searches. Tune in to find out which country at EURO 2024 has the best national dish, who is empirically speaking the sexiest of the 24 head coaches, why Niklas Füllkrug has the best ‘Personal life' section on Wikipedia and why Ralf Rangnick has taken the Austria squad to a Rod Stewart concert in Berlin.   The focus is on club football in Part 2, with three amazing stories from Portugal, Japan and Iceland. Why could a Santa Clara player's tattoo to commemorate winning the Portuguese second division prove to be premature? How has a university team managed to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Emperor's Cup in Japan? And will lower-league Icelandic club FC Reynir, who are based at the foot of a volcano, get the home cup tie they have been dreaming of for 30 years?   For Part 3 and some international football headlines from three other continents, join us over on Patreon at patreon.com/SweeperPod. Why is 16-year-old Bolivian wonderkid Moisés Paniagua unable to travel to the Copa America in the United States? What emotional moment of unity took place at the world's newest international football derby between Sudan and South Sudan? And why has Singapore's 40-year-old goalkeeper Hassan Sunny had to beg Chinese football fans to stop sending him money?   RUNNING ORDER: 00:00 – Intro 00:40 – EURO 2024 – Christmas for adults 03:40 – EURO 2024 culture craziness 07:02 – EURO 2024 food wars 11:15 – EURO 2024 online polls & searches 15:57 – Guest podcast appearances 17:52 – A tattoo mishap in Portugal 22:01 – A university upset in Japan 27:29 – An Icelandic village dream 34:53 – Listener emails   Podcast guest appearances: Lee on The Totally Show: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6npASOQ1BZPvYYFpnb4ssE Paul on Guardian Football Weekly: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2uu1QCQC1vH2ISK8euq8kj Lee on The Window: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4tPj0TvQ5NQfN6CcQPDOCA Paul on World of CONCACAF: https://open.spotify.com/episode/24hiIr0iqUW7MSEKGnY5ol

Do you want to learn about Scotch whisky, tartans and kilts? Well, in this episode, host Reg Ferguson is invited by Simon Brooking from Beam Suntory to indulge in a conversational journey through the world of Scotch and Scottish fashion at New York's Copper and Oak. Simon, a senior ambassador with rich knowledge of Scotch heritage (he's a Scotsman so that makes sense), discusses the distinct flavors and intricacies of various Laphroaig and Bowmore whiskies. Simon is also quite the storyteller (I think it's a cultural thing). When it comes to fashion, wait till you hear them talking about tartans and kilts. No spoilers.

WHAT?! ANOTHER Sasnak City event? Why yes, yes indeed. Terri stayed in Kansas City for 10 days and met 9 cast members from The Last Kingdom.Ivy & Terri agree,  we NEED more Men in Kilts! Four episodes was not nearly enough.Whiskey picks:Terri - Bulleit Rye in a highball (sparkling water and lemon)Ivy - Uncle Nearest single barrel, a gift from a coworker of Ivy'sWhy was Sam so oddly obsessed with lubing up during this episode?Ivy is convinced Sam could be down to get tattoos. We'll keep you posted. This episode was so rushed. They absolutely could have created a 5th episode (with the mud bath part alone). Or with Wild Kingdom, New Zealand edition.Despite Terri's offer to accompany Ivy, they will not be doing the bungee swing or other height adventures in New Zealand.Stay tuned to see what we cook up to get us through Droughtlander! Please rate us on your podcast platform! No, you haven't pulled up the wrong podcast...we really do get around to Men in Kilts. But first, we have to talk about a true crime and cannibalism podcast. We have some ideas for Sam & Graham's next career evolution. Not to mention, Ivy is going to become a psychic for her next career jump!Fascinating episode about Maori culture including the Haka, the fighting forms and weapons training, and the cultural centers visited.Drinks picks:Ivy - Bardstown Chateau de laubadeTerri - Farmer's Respite cocktail: bourbon, Campari and St. Germain with a twist of lemon. Old Forester 100Ivy also feels a bit betrayed by Graham and Sam getting tattooed together, even temporary ones, after Graham promised to do the same with her. Terri seems pretty damn certain that Sam doesn't have any tattoos (toooo certain, maybe? Definitely more positive than she has any right to be.)Please rate us on your podcast platform! " Shel O'Toole responded regarding music books for Celtic Guitar: "Hi Marc, Two books that were recommended are Celtic Guitar by Glen Weiser and The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book. I haven't checked out either of them but they both seem to be widely used. I was listening to show 581 and someone asked about books for Celtic Guitar.   I'm having a catch up day, this is the third podcast for the day (I'm up to date again). I also remembered to email one of the bands We Banjo 3 and tell them how I first heard them here and now I follow them on Soundcloud.  I love their sound.  The song Hummingbird is superb. Thanks as always for your fabulous show.  Is there any way I can make a one off contribution?  I went to patreon but I don't want to make a weekly subscription.  I'd rather just make a one - off contribution each year.  Is that possible?
