A huge pod today, we start with Karl Vilips' fantastic win in Puerto Rico - amazing. Nick and Mark chat about his path to this point, from an Australian prodigy at 6-years old to PGA winner, how he did it and why he moved to the US so young. Nick chats about what impressed him about Karl's performance, and Mark raises his swing and suggests it may be the new modern swing. Nick would prefer to see Karl waggling, but at the same time he's doing pretty well without it!We discuss Jason Day's suble change in his putting. Nick raises some of the changes at Bay Hill and talks about playing that course.Mark raises 'fast greens' and says that whilst many golfers like to say they play them well, they are not ideal generally. We talk about ideal green speeds. The Australian Open dates, for all tournaments, are yet to be announced. Mark asks are Golf Australia serious about the Open or not? And he invites James Sutherland onto the pod to explain where it's at.Mark has heard that the discussions between the PIF and the PGA in Washington have broken down.Nick's Top 5 is on well known players who wore gloves to putt, in order of worst to best. It won't surprise you to know that it is in fact a Top 6. Surely by now this is an ACCC issue. Nick also tells a great story about the Golden Bear at a conference - very funny.Feedback today - including a call from David in Brisbane who is heading off next week to the Barossa for a boys drinking , ahem, golf trip and wants some advice on how to maintain energy and momentum under duress (ie: late nights, wines and beers). Also in feedback a couple of whacks for Mark. Always fun.PING global results - we're yet to resolve the trumpet situation. Watch this space. And Marks masterclass is on how 'locking your shirt' under your armpit can help your putting. Our intern Javier was in charge of audio, might explain why we fired him.We do the show from Titleist and FootJoy HQ, thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf; The watchMynumbers app, play smarter and use your data. A feedback pod this week where we run through more of your questions, comments, and feedback.Lots of comments from you on the Links 100 list that Mark brought up last week on the pod, including a pretty blunt assessment of Pebble from one Wolfpacker. Nick and Mark run through Pebble hole by hole and give their thoughts.Mark recommends a wonderful series of archive vision that he loves - Shell's Wonderful World of Golf. Some of the videos are here.We have a voicemail from Grant in Melbourne with a question on how to get the most out a lesson with a PGA Pro. And Nick talks about working with his old coach Neil Simpson who Grant has also had a lesson with.Jason Day's outfit at Pebble. We discuss following a question from Wolfpacker Paul. Mark tells a story about clothing at Huntingdale from years gone by. A funny question, in the sense of how it came about, from Steve about the Webex Series. And a serious question asked about James Sutherland, phrased a little bluntly, but whether it's directed at us or somebody else, we'll always discuss it.And we finish with some fun stories about shagging balls. We're coming from Titleist and Footjoy HQ, and we're here thanks to our great partners:The watchMynumbers app, play smarter and use your data. One close to the heart this week as Nick's brother James joins the boys as a guest to talk about his work as a teacher and also the work he is doing through his social media to spread some positivity in the world.
Another big week in golf and Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen are all over it.We start by discussing Keegan Bradley's appointment as the captain of the US Ryder Cup team, an appointment which took us all by surprise. But we quickly move on to Steph Kyriacou's performance in the Evian, she did so well and nearly won her first major but just fell a little short to a fast finishing Ayaka Furue.Mark loves Ludvig Åberg but wasn't over the moon with his performance at the weekend. On the positive side, Mark feels his Ludvig betting strategy is in good shape. And what a win for Bobby MacIntyre in the Scottish Open at the weekend, beating our own Adam Scott by one. Nick and Mark chat about the 16th hole. So good.Mark asks Nick why metal spikes are still allowed. He has a theory.Huge news out of Melbourne with Metropolitan and Huntingdale looking at a merger proposal. Nick and Mark both rate the move, which has been a long time coming, and decide on the fly to arrange a bonus pod with the respective club captains. Mark gets straight on the phone at the turn and fires off texts everywhere to arrange it....which results in SMS replies coming in throughout the second half of the pod! We didn't think that one through.Massive weekend in Spain, the Euros win over England in the soccer (football!), Wimbledon with Alcaraz, and LIV. Good week to be a Spaniard. Olé!!!We play a voicemail from Tim in Sorrento, Western Australia, who has a question for Nick and Mark about cleaning your equipment - and he reckons No Laying Up might have been listening to Talk Birdie To Me. Why wouldn't they.A fun Top 5 today, Nick counts down his Top 5 'duels' at the Open Championship, Mark comes up with an idea to do a Top 5 'plaquable bogeys'. You read that correctly. We're hoping he forgets. He's asked us to remind him, but we won't.Lots of feedback on the bonus pod last week with James Sutherland last week, too much to read out, so we read about 5 or 6. Mixed feedback on Marks joke last week. Some of you liked it. Poor form. Plenty of other feedback as well, keep it coming.A massive PING global results this week, Nick takes us through it - but we get interrupted mid PING global when pod listener Tim from Canberra calls the hotline to ask a question about Aaron Baddeley...Nick hooks back into the results without missing a bit after Tim calls. And a ripper masterclass thanks to the gang at the watchMynumbers app, on putting on slower greens.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners, who we hope will forgive Marks joke:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. After yesterday's big bonus pod with Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland, today is the normal pod - 24 hours later than usual, but hopefully you enjoyed the chat with James. If you haven't heard it, have a listen.Plenty on today's show. Nick has just come back from playing Long Island in zero degree temperatures, thankfully he has a shiny new clothing sponsor to keep him warm. Cutter and Buck if you must know. Mark raises golf course renovations, specifically why they do them so slowly (ie: 9 holes at a time). We've got a poll up on twitter here, love your thoughts.Mark also names the worst golf coach he ever had. And then, without any sense of irony, goes on to outline a fantastic tip that this coach gave him. And Nick admits to something that he did on a golf course that he has never told anyone.Nick and Mark discuss yesterday's bonus pod with James Sutherland and how much they enjoyed it, they are particularly pleased that James seems to be aiming high and thinking big.....two words resonated with them: 'Rolex Series'. We can dream.Marks turn for the Top 5 this week and what initially felt like a filler Top 5 that he'd given zero thought to actually turned out to be pretty good.Nick has a great fun fact on the legendary Bernhard Langer, and runs through some great results in the PING global results - not the least of which was a fantastic #2 finish from David Micheluzzi on the DP World Tour. Some fantastic feedback including more comments on our bonus pod a couple of weeks ago with Jonathan Yarwood - and a mate of Nicks took up the invite to get some advice from Jonathan via Skillest with brilliant results. And a great masterclass from Nick, requested by Talk Birdie listener Peter Riley on hitting out of the long rough. And finally an apology. Into the turn today Mark, for reasons best known to himself, decided to tell a joke. It was awful. We're embarrassed. We considered not airing it, but he insisted. And that means you need to hear it, for which we cannot apologise enough. The only thing that will prevent a reoccurrence is a reality check via feedback, so let us know on socials, leave a voicemail, whatever you prefer.....but our heartfelt apologies for this misstep.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners, who we hope will forgive Marks joke:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. A massive bonus pod today, Nick O'Hern & Mark Allen chat one on one, okay two on one, with Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland. In a wide-ranging conversation we cover the key issues:Why it has taken so long to announce the venue, format and dates of the 2024 Australian Open. The rationale behind Kingston Heath and Victoria Golf Club as the venues. Is the mixed format - mens, women's and all abilities - the way forward, and are the imperfections of it acceptable given the benefits. Is he open to separating the events in the right circumstances. Why the Victoria government has invested in golf, and hosting this tournament in Melbourne. If November is the best date for the Open, or if it is the only date that works.IF LIV Adelaide been good for golf in Australia. Will Golf Australia be offering appearance fees to players like Rory to get them here for the Open.Elevation of the Australian events. Will the Open be in Melbourne ongoing, or will he consider other states. His view on whether the PIF, PGA, DPWT welcome together and how that might look. It's a ripping bonus podcast from the guy at the top of the tree in Australian golf. Tickets for the Australian Open 2024 are available from Ticketek or AusOpenGolf.com.au.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Guest: James Sutherland Hello there! I am the founder of Charlie's Soap. When I started the company back in the late 1970's, I never expected that our simple but powerful cleaner we be the center of an international operation some 40 years later. It all started when I was working for my dad, Charlie Sutherland Sr., at a textile lubricant plant in North Carolina. One day, word came down that we needed to find a good cleaner for the textile machines – and quick! Not only would it have to clean up the oil on the machines, but it could not harm the little old ladies whose job it was to clean them. It also had to be acceptable to local wastewater treatment. Well, my background is in engineering, chemistry, and a bit of mathematics. I knew how to make the oils we used in the plant so I reverse engineered a formula to break those oils down in water. Wouldn't you know it, the stuff worked even better than I expected. Originally, the whole goal was just to keep the machines clean, but soon we discovered that the soap cleaned fabric really well too. I even named it ‘SB-2069' to make it sound like I knew what I was doing. Not bad for a first try. Unsurprisingly, folks working with the cleaner loved the stuff and started calling it “Charlie's Soap” after my dad. Soon, we knew a demand was growing for Charlie's Soap because the employees kept stealing the stuff left and right! That's when I knew it was time to quit my day job, take a leap of faith, and buy our little soap plant outright. The local Winn-Dixie agreed to be our first outlet and Charlie's Soap was officially born. In the early years, I was on my own, adrift in a sea of suds and uncertainty. We tried many ways to grow the “Soap.” Some worked; many didn't. Marketing was really not my forte. But my family never stopped trying. My kids get the credit for our success. As they grew older, they joined the business and helped make us into what we are today. My youngest, Morgan, and I created the Laundry Powder. Today he runs IT and Quality Control. Taylor, the oldest, took on sales and marketing. James specializes in engineering and international sales. My daughter Jenny is chairman of the board. And my wife Jane is our treasurer. Thanks to them, today we sell in thousands of mom-and-pop specialty shops, major hardware chains, supermarkets, and through the largest online retailers around the world. But through it all, we have always operated Charlie's Soap with a dedication to producing the highest quality biodegradable, environmentally safe products possible. Over the years, they have been tested against the best and they have always won, hands down. The combination of good science, environmentally friendly ingredients, and a darn good soap is one that still gets me excited. It is a combination that none of our competitors can claim, and it is something that I am very proud of. Thanks for visiting our website, and please try our Charlie's Soap. We'll keep making it the best product. -Charlie Sutherland Jr. https://www.facebook.com/james.sutherland.100 https://www.charliesoap.com/ Youtube @jamessutherland4238

Are "voluntourists" - foreigners coming to do well-meaning voluntary work - actually doing more harm than good at developing world orphanages?Manuela Saragosa speaks to one who says she saw the light. Pippa Biddle travelled to Tanzania to help do construction work at an orphanage. But she soon realised that the shoddy work she and her fellow American students were doing was creating more work for the people they were supposedly helping, and the whole project was really designed for their own benefit. But the harm goes further than that, as James Sutherland, who works in Cambodia for the child welfare organisation Friends International, explains. Voluntourism creates a demand for an industry of fake orphanages trafficking in children who are not even orphans.(Picture: American woman with two African children; Credit: MShep2/Getty Images)
