The devil went down to Georgia, where the Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) lives its days in peace and harmony. This record-breakingly long-lived tree found the perfect place to call home--the swamps of the Southeastern United States. There, it sheds stereotypes as well as it sheds its needles, growing with grace and beauty against the harsh and dreary landscapes in which it resides. This deciduous conifer is without a doubt and from top to bottom a unique species. Then, we play a new game all about puns: A Little Bit Puntree, A Little Bit Log and Soil.Completely Arbortrary is produced and hosted by Casey Clapp and Alex CrowsonJoin the Cone of the Month ClubSupport the show on PatreonFollow along on InstagramFind Arbortrary merch on our storeFind additional reading on our websiteCover art by Jillian BartholdMusic by Aves and The Mini-Vandals

When Hurricane Hugo came through South Carolina, Sumter County was really hit hard. The magnificent Swan Lake Gardens lost several hundred pine trees exposing camellias and azaleas to unwelcome sunlight. But only a few bald cypresses were lost. If you come across a young bald cypress, shake it and you'll find that is flexible, even adult trees are not brittle like pines.
You can easily see large majestic bald cypress trees if you walk the boardwalk at the Congaree National Park. But retired DNR wildlife biologist John Cely who has explored the Park extensively, you might enjoy his blogs (at Friends of the Congaree Swamp) had found large cypress inaccessible except by boat and took Professor Dave Stahle, the world's expert on bald cypress, to that area.

If you come across a young bald cypress, shake it and you'll find that is flexible, even adult trees are not brittle like pines. The ones in water with their interlacing knees have a giant support system in play protecting them against strong winds, even hurricanes. In ice storms, they again have an advantage over pines as they are deciduous and have no needles for the ice to accumulate on and cause the trunks to break. You can grow bald cypress in a regular landscape – they don't make knees in ordinary soils – just buy a bale of long-leaf pinestraw for mulch.

But retired DNR wildlife biologist John Cely who has explored the Park extensively, you might enjoy his blogs (at Friends of the Congaree Swamp) had found large cypress inaccessible except by boat and took Professor Dave Stahle, the world's expert on bald cypress, to that area. Professor Stahle took tree cores from the largest of those trees to get information on their age and the climate they had grown in for probably over a thousand years. The oldest cypress trees Dr. Stahle has found are in the Black River preserve in North Carolina and are over 2,000 years old. The size of bald cypress doesn't necessarily indicate their age; ones that grow in nutrient poor wet soils grow slowly.

Welcome back listeners! Nate and Evan return to the bald cypress care guide and continue to pick through the species in detail. Maybe they will manage to get through the rest of the care guide, maybe not. Listen to find out!
"Today on our journey up the Natchez Trace Parkway from Natchez to Nashville we will look at a couple of exhibits that show us some of the bottom lands through which travelers of the Trace had to pass. We are now about 20 miles north of Tupelo, Mississippi. "The first exhibit is DONIVAN SLOUGH that contains a woodland nature trail through rich moist soil that supports Tulip poplar, sycamore and water oak, all trees that tolerate lots of water. A slough like this is a winding channel that makes its way through swampy bottom land. The occasional flooding that occurs influences the variety of plant life. There is a nature trail at Donivan Slough and a 20 minute walk lets visitors see how Bald Cypress grow. "A couple of miles north from the slough is BROWN'S BOTTOM where several bridges now cross Little Brown Creek and other perennial streams in this bottom land. Remember, in the early 1800s there were no bridges. "Join us next time when we will visit the most important archaeological site in northern Mississippi, Pharr Mounds. For Natchez Trace a road through the wilderness, I'm Frank Thomas." For more about Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness, visit eddieandfrank.com
On this episode of Bonsai Southeast, Nate and Evan sit down and talk their favorite species for bonsai; bald cypress. This will be a multi-part episode because there is so much to be said about this species when it comes to general care and how to design them.
"We are making a journey up the Natchez Trace Parkway from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee. Along the way we are stopping by the more than one hundred exhibits which the park service has erected to interpret the history, culture and nature along this, one of the oldest roads in the world. "Today we visit a short nature trail along COLE CREEK, another of the many winding creeks and streams that feed water into the Yockanookany River. The early road paralleled this creek for awhile and it would have been a source of food and water for travelers on foot and on horseback. "Along the parkway there are several nature trails that explore the process of land being reclaimed from rivers and streams. First the streams reroute themselves and leave channels as backwaters, then water tolerant trees like the Water Tupelo and Bald Cypress grow up in the swamps and slowly build up the land. At Cole Creek a nature trail leads visitors through the last stage of a tupelo, bald cypress swamp and then to the early stages of a mixed hardwood bottom land forest. Early travelers along the Natchez Trace would have been much more familiar with this process than most of us today. The speed at which we travel directly effects the scope of our experience and the scale of our understanding. "Join us next time when we'll visit the 'House of God,' Bethel Mission. I'm Frank Thomas, your guide along the Natchez Trace, a road through the Wilderness."
This week Nathan discusses the process of properly winterizing your houseplants before bringing them back into the house before temperatures drop below their preferred warmness. After some heavy rains in the south, we find areas in the garden where water tends to settle and stay. Nathan has a solution for you! Bald Cypress, River Birch, and Dawn Redwood all handle very wet soil...and very dry soil. Lastly, Nathan gives you some garden design tips to help set your landscape apart from the rest of the neighborhood!
My “Dead” Tree Mystery & Parenting Episode 60 Learn about my panic when I notice a lot of trees in my neighborhood seem to be dying and NO ONE ELSE CARES.
