As we welcome the fresh energy of spring, it feels only right to celebrate the season with a conversation about gardens and the beauty they bring into our lives. And who better to join us than one of the most distinguished garden designers in the UK - Butter Wakefield.Butter grew up on a small farm outside Baltimore, Maryland. After gaining experience at Christie's in New York City, she relocated to London in 1988. There, she began her career at Colfax and Fowler as a design assistant, where she honed essential design principles such as color, scale, and pattern. In 1992, she followed her true calling: gardening - an art form embedded in her family's legacy. With a mother, aunt and grandparents who were all accomplished gardeners, it was inevitable that Butter would cultivate a passion for gardens herself. She trained at the English Gardening School before graduating from the prestigious London College of Garden Design.Today, she's recognized as one of House & Garden's Top 50 Garden Designers and has earned multiple accolades including the RHS, Gold medal and the People's Choice Award at the Chatsworth Flower Show for the Belmont Enchanted Garden. Having recently been awarded an MBE for his contributions to landscape architecture, garden design, and heritage, Andrew Wilson speaks to HortWeek editor Matthew Appleby about what this means to him personally, but also what it means for the industry. He talks about his teaching career and how, as director of garden design studies at London College of Garden Design, he is seeing more students come in from other professions and is curious about what's causing them to deflect from their initial interest in horticulture. He also touches upon the mergers and closures of horticulture colleges and whether it is a trend likely to continue. As a former RHS judge, Wilson says he often gets asked for his advice on whether show gardens are good things. With his garden designer hat on, he says they are, especially for nurturing students. He says:"Andy Sturgeon probably wouldn't be where he is today, or Tom Stuart-Smith, without the Chelsea gardens that they have produced. So from my student-nurturing point of view, they're undeniably a good thing.”Wilson also talks about his concern around sustainable gardens all looking similar: “I am totally supportive of gardens with sustainability running through everything. But it can potentially produce similar results in terms of where materials come from, how materials are used, and how our planting works.” Hosted on Acast. Why have gardens been underused in care home settings in the past, even when they're designed to be used? This episode, my guest is Debbie Carroll. Debbie is a Southampton based garden designer with experience in designing for care homes and other health settings for residents with dementia. Her work in these surroundings prompted her to question why these gardens were not more actively used even when they were designed to the latest design guidance. Along with her fellow designer Mark Rendell they researched what hindered engagement with the garden, in particular for people living with dementia. About Debbie Carroll Debbie Carroll is a Southampton based garden designer celebrating 20 years as a designer. She is passionate about gardens being well used and well-loved long after she has left. Her experience in designing for care homes and other health settings for residents with dementia prompted the question of why gardens were not more actively used even when designed to the latest design guidance.  Along with her fellow designer Mark Rendell they researched what hindered engagement with the garden, in particular for people living with dementia. Step Change Design Ltd was formed 10 years ago to share the findings of this study and has since published their ‘Why don't we go into the garden?' series of books and tools. These support both the care sector towards more person-centred care and designers in working effectively alongside them. With the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK just completed, the gardening world as a whole has the concept of Garden Design awards and recognition - along with the garden world's trends, concerns and priorities - top of mind. Such display and attention – and recognition well beyond the garden world – has the potential to move hearts and minds and, more importantly, to change minds and behaviors. We hope for the better. In 2023, Pacific Horticulture, a non-profit leader in horticultural thinking and gardening up and down the Pacific Region of the US since 1976 (and rooted back even earlier), jumped into the arena of how we encourage, celebrate, recognize, and even incentivize garden design when they launched their inaugural Design Futurist awards. These awards demonstrate the power of garden design to achieve climate resilience, steward biodiversity, and connect people with nature. In 2023, the first year of the awards, “visionary designers and regional plantspeople submitted designs illustrating that our gardens can conserve plants and wildlife, treat our water and soil as precious, and hold the wellbeing of people at their center.” The Design Futurist Awards celebrate “garden design that is easily replicable, modest in scale, or designed for intimate neighborhood community use” and I hope serve as a model for how to not just award but reward good garden design anywhere and everywhere. This week, Sarah Beck Pacific Horticulture's Executive Director joins Cultivating Place to share more about the process and purpose of these awards – entries for which are being accepted now through July 26th, 2024. To design a permaculture garden, start with what you have at the site, and build it out from there. Think about the terrain, and harness natural sources of water and energy. Then all you have left to do is pick your plants and, if you choose, animals.  Epic Gardening Shop Homepage: https://growepic.co/49kOwyH Botanical Interests Shop Homepage: https://growepic.co/3T73WRy Book Collection Page: https://growepic.co/48kwyLq EG Homesteading Book: https://growepic.co/3I5CNrK Connect With Angela Ferraro-Fanning: Angela Ferraro-Fanning is a Cornell University certified permaculturist and homesteader in central New Jersey. Hey, y'all! Welcome to episode 54 of the Roots and Refuge Podcast. Today, I'm thrilled to have my friend Jeremy from Semojo Homestead joining me to dive into the fascinating world of garden design. With his background in landscape architecture and experience in designing and installing gardens, Jeremy brings a wealth of knowledge and insights to our conversation. Together, we'll explore the importance of creating intentional spaces in your garden and share practical tips for bringing your vision to life. Jeremy and I will discuss everything from setting goals for your space to utilizing the resources you have available to transform your garden into a beautiful and functional oasis. We'll delve into the concept of "rooms" within the garden, discussing how to define entry points, incorporate tall plants for privacy, and create focal points like bean teepees to enhance the overall design. Throughout our discussion, we'll emphasize the importance of thoughtful design choices, considering factors like texture, sound, and aesthetics to create a harmonious and inviting outdoor environment. From ornamental gardens to productive vegetable patches, we'll explore the balance between perennial non-edible landscaping and annual vegetable gardening, offering insights into creating spaces that reflect your unique preferences and lifestyle. And on a deeper note, we'll touch on the significance of fostering relationships with people who may have different perspectives, highlighting the value of diversity and connection in both gardening and life. Be sure to check out Jeremy and Cass's YouTube channel, Semojo Homestead, and their Facebook group, Homesteading from Scratch, for more inspiration and practical tips on homesteading and garden design.
