A 2,600-year-old bald cypress tree stands quietly in North Carolina's Three Sisters Swamp—older than the Roman Empire, untouched by time, and protected by a resurgent tribal community. In this powerful episode, Travis Loop joins members of the Coharie Tribe on a World Water Day paddle through their ancestral waters on the Black River. Guided by Kullen Bell and other tribal leaders, the journey reveals a deep cultural revival grounded in environmental stewardship. The conversation explores the tribe's restoration of forgotten waterways, their discovery of a 650-year-old dugout canoe, and the creation of a paddling trail that reconnects people to place. Bell also discusses the Great Coharie River Initiative and how community action has led to visibility, funding, and a new generation of programs. waterloop is a nonprofit news outlet.

Lucinda is joined by Rob Lion, from Black River Performance Management to discuss the critical elements of fostering intrinsic motivation and performance in the workplace. Rob, a full-time professor and expert in human resource development, emphasises the importance of understanding human behaviour, the psychological factors that influence motivation, and introduces the "CAR" model, which focuses on competency, autonomy, and relatedness as key drivers of intrinsic motivation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Effective performance management requires a deep understanding of human behaviour and motivation. Organisations often fail to implement sustainable solutions because they overlook the psychological aspects of employee engagement. High-quality intrinsic motivation is driven by three key elements: competency (the ability to perform tasks effectively), autonomy (the independence to make choices in work), and relatedness (the sense of connection with others). Addressing these needs can enhance employee motivation and performance. Miscommunication and differing interpretations of terms like "motivation" and "engagement" can hinder organisational effectiveness. It's crucial to establish a common language and understanding among team members to foster better communication and collaboration. Organisational culture will develop either intentionally (by design) or unintentionally (by default). Leaders must actively cultivate a positive culture that supports intrinsic motivation and employee well-being to ensure long-term success. BEST MOMENTS "Work should fuel the human spirit and not drain it, focusing on performance but not at the expense of the employee experience." "The secret of high performance in people is that we might have the best process, but if people haven't bought into it, humans make things fail." "High quality, intrinsic motivation requires three different elements: competency, autonomy, and relatedness." "It's easier for me to tell you, you need to get this done, as opposed to having a conversation that moves us into this alignment category." Slushcult, 6skates, Jakepfb and I are in Germany for FASTFINGERS 21 and 25 years of Blackriver. Here's a recap of our first few days on the trip!
With special guest: Matthew Spencer… in conversation with Bill Kable Matthew Spencer decided to make a big change in his life after 20 successful years as a journalist. The challenge he took on was not going to be easy and there were no guarantees. Matthew chose to enter the highly competitive field of writing a crime novel and as with a lot of ventures he needed a bit of luck along the way. It can be a lonely path requiring in this case four years of working on his original idea. There were a lot of setbacks on this four year journey but Matthew had the good fortune of being able to engage with a professional editor who worked alongside him for most of that journey. Although tough on Matthew her criticisms were always constructive and there never was a time when she said the effort would go unrewarded. Finally all that hard work has paid off and Matthew is proud to unveil his first novel, Black River, which has already received some rave reviews from some of our most respected writers. This week, we speak with visual artist Nick Cave. Cave is best known for his ‘Soundsuits': vibrant, whimsical costumes that entirely cover the face and body. But the Soundsuits are not just playful. He made the first after police beat Rodney King in 1991, and they are meant to help process collective sorrow through celebration, and to give armour to the marginalized. In the wake of police killing Tyre Nichols last month, we speak with Nick about how his work has changed over 30 years, even as history repeats. Then, FT Weekend columnist Nilanjana Roy joins us to discuss what makes a great book club, and how to start your own.--------------Want to say hi? We love hearing from you. The story of how famous Russian author Alexander Pushkin once faced a duel by The Black River on the outskirts of St. Petersburg features high drama, society scandals, a weird foot joke, and pistols at dusk.
On February 18th, 1992, the decomposed body of a man was discovered in the waters near the Black River parkway in Cape Town, South Africa. As the area is rife with gang activity it was initially theorized that the man was yet another victim of gang gun violence, but they soon discovered he had a very unique wound; a crossbow through his head. Using a new technique to help identify the body, they were able to identify him as Victor Graham Chatburn from Kraaifontein, a northern suburb of Western Cape Town. As investigators dug into who could have killed the married father, a truly shocking story unfolded. For photos and sources for today's episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog.
