We return with a true pioneer in the representation of women in comics innovating several genres within the formerly male dominated industry. Barbara Slate is a trailblazer for women in comics. She's a sought-after speaker, teacher, and author of You Can Do a Graphic Novel, endorsed by Stan Lee and widely used in classrooms. Her first character, Ms. Liz, appeared on greeting cards, in Cosmopolitan, and on NBC's Today Show. She created Angel Love for DC, Yuppies from Hell and Sweet XVI for Marvel, and adapted Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, and Barbie. She also wrote over 100 Betty and Veronica stories. Her 2012 graphic novel, Getting Married and Other Mistakes, explored modern relationships. Her work has been exhibited widely and featured in The New York Times and A Century of Women Cartoonists. Barbara discusses making Betty and Veronica about the characters and not Archie, the blow-back from featuring real word issues in Angel Love and how she inadvertently changed the greeting card industry with Ms. Liz!Support the show

Join Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) as they travel back to 1980's New York City to discuss the 1986-1987 series Angel Love by Barbara Slate.  Luckily this is they discovered their passion and... ahem, talent... for voice acting! During the summer of 1986 most DC Comics featured a most curious house-ad promising, among other things at least the passing mention of COCAINE?!!  What many comics enthusiasts may not know is this book actually DID came out later on that year!  Angel Love is a New York transplant coming from a quiet corner in Scranton, Pennsylvania hoping to strike it big as a cartoonist.  Along the way she will face drug-addicted boyfriends, a vapid (and more fun to read about) roommate, a bum who likes to sleep on her couch, and countless chatty cockroaches.  Is this what life in the big city’s all about? Find out with us as we check out Angel Love. --------------- Originally aired in segment form during Weird Science DC Comics Podcast, Episode 88 (September 11, 2016) --------------- TAGS: Angel Love, DC Comics, 1986, 1987, 1980s, Barbara Slate, Karen Berger, Romance Comics, COCAINE?!! --------------- Weekly Writings www.weirdsciencedccomics.com Daily Writings www.chrisisoninfiniteearths.com -------------- Chris' Angel Love Coverage: www.chrisisoninfiniteearths.com/p/angel-love.html

Barbara Slate is the author of more than 300 comic books and graphic novels. She created, wrote and drew Angel Love for DC Comics, and Yuppies from Hell and Sweet XVI for Marvel. Her first character , Ms Liz, has  appeared on millions of greeting cards, in magazines, and on the Today Show; in addition, she wrote the Disney comic classics Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas, plus more than 60 issues of Mattel's Barbie (winner of the Parent's Choice Award two years in a row), and more than 100 Betty and Veronica stories for Archie Comics. She is the author of You Can  Do a Graphic Novel,  "a guide to creating graphic novels - presented in the form of a graphic novel - from a veteran in the field." Her new semi-autobiographical graphic novel, Getting Married and Other Mistakes (2012) has been called 'charming and empowering'. In it, a newly divorced narrator encounters many of the social challenges that modern women must face, while undertaking a complicated journey toward finding her inner voice. I met with Slate at her home in the Hudson Valley recently to talk about all of this, and more.

Richard Minsky is a celebrated American book artist,  bookbinder and scholar who at age 13 got his first printing press. In 1968, he graduated cum laude in economics from Brooklyn College, was then awarded a fellowship at Brown University, got his Master's degree in economics, and then pursued a Ph.D. at The New School for Social Research;  two years later he chucked it all for bookbinding, art and music. He studied bookbinding under master bookbinder Daniel Gibson Knowlton  In 1974, Minsky founded the Center for Book Arts in New York, an organization dedicated to interpreting the book as an art object using traditional book arts practices. I met with Richard and his graphic novelist partner Barbara Slate at their house in the Hudson Valley for libation and conversation. My objective was to pry artists books apart from these traditional book arts moorings. Listen to how successful I was.
