A galeria italiana Rhinoceros recebe em Roma a primeira exposição individual do artista brasileiro Rodrigo Torres na Itália. Intitulada "Água Mole em Pedra Dura", a mostra é fruto de uma parceria com a galeria brasileira A Gentil Carioca e permanece em cartaz até 13 de agosto. Gina Marques, correspondente da RFI em Roma A RFI encontrou o artista em Roma, na pré-estreia da exposição. “Eu apresento um conjunto de esculturas em cerâmica com essa técnica trompe-l'oeil de imitação de papelão, de papel rasgado, de pedra. Tudo que você vê aqui não é o que parece, e eu trago também muitas referências de Roma”, conta Rodrigo Torres. Inspirado nos monumentos da Cidade Eterna e na natureza do bairro da Tijuca, no Rio de Janeiro, onde nasceu e cresceu, o artista apresenta um novo ciclo de obras. Entre as peças, estão esculturas em cerâmica, além de uma série de desenhos e pinturas em papel, nunca antes exibidos publicamente. “Todas as obras são em cerâmica, em pintura, mas quando você olha parece que é um papelão ou um papel. Algumas peças parecem pedras, porque a cor se assemelha a cor da pedra, assim como a pintura sobre papel dá a impressão de estar rasgado, mas não está, que é uma colagem, mas não é”, diz Márcio Botner, um dos fundadores e sócio da galeria A Gentil Carioca. Convergências com a natureza Na Floresta da Tijuca, árvores centenárias tombam e encostas cedem sob a ação do vento e da água. Em Roma, Rodrigo Torres encontrou a situação inversa: rachaduras são reparadas, superfícies estabilizadas e estruturas reforçadas para adiar o colapso. Dessa observação surgiu uma série de esculturas com efeito de colagem, evocando a possibilidade iminente de uma ruptura. Da presença constante da água nas inúmeras fontanas de Roma nasce a obra Por um Fio de Água, uma fonte apoiada sobre pedras. A fonte em cerâmica criada pelo artista brasileiro dá a impressão que é feita de tubos de papelão pintados amarrados por barbantes. “Eu já trabalho há algum tempo fazendo fontes de água. Aqui, eu pensei nela como agente de erosão e como isso se combina com os materiais e toda a cultura de Roma”, esclarece Rodrigo Torres. A Cidade Eterna é fonte de inspiração e de descoberta de novos materiais, destaca Márcio Botner. “Em Roma, Rodrigo descobre ainda mais elementos, a força da questão histórica com a conexão da natureza. Aqui ele descobre um barro para fazer a cerâmica que é diferente do Brasil, que tem uma cor muito similar ao tufo, que é essa pedra vulcânica.” Projeto O projeto das galerias é expor a criação de artistas estrangeiros depois de residirem em Roma por um breve período. Em 2023 a Rhinoceros teve a ideia de colaborar com outras galerias internacionais que não têm uma sede em Roma. A colaboração com A Gentil Carioca começou em março deste ano, inaugurando a mostra “O Tempo Mora em Mim” de Miguel Afa, o primeiro artista brasileiro a expor individualmente nesta galeria romana. “Esse projeto com a Rhinoceros nasce do convite para realizar uma parceria. A ideia foi trazer dois artistas. O primeiro (Miguel Afa) residiu aqui na capital italiana por quase três meses, realizando suas obras em Roma”, conta o fundador da A Gentil Carioca. “Essa experiência do artista de poder se aprofundar na cidade de Roma traz trabalhos inéditos. Roma é uma cidade que a cada esquina você descobre um pouco, uma nova página da história, e isso os artistas trouxeram intensamente dentro de cada obra”, salienta Botner. A Rhinoceros Gallery “O artista vive em Roma e imprime sua própria alma, o próprio espírito, seu olhar sobre a beleza de Roma, e de alguma forma isso transparece nas obras em exposição. Portanto, é uma ponte de comunicação.” afirma Alessia Caruso Fendi, fundadora da galeria Rhinoceros, à RFI. Para ela, o projeto com o Brasil representa o dinamismo do espaço artístico. "É um momento importante para nós também.” A galeria já apresentou exposições de grande impacto, incluindo uma da Galeria François Ghebaly, seguida por uma exposição individual do designer francês Ronan Bouroullec e a exposição coletiva Profili e Gesti, com obras de outros designers importantes, ambas com curadoria da Galerie kreo. Mais recentemente, também acolheu a galeria parisiense Nathalie Obadia e a trilogia de exposições da Galeria Bigaignon. As galerias convidadas podem trazer a sua própria identidade e curadoria para o espaço ou desenvolver projetos concebidos para Roma, por vezes produzindo obras diretamente na cidade.  Experiência em Roma Depois de morar quase três meses na Cidade Eterna, Rodrigo Torres descreve esta experiência nas suas criações: “Em Roma eu andei por aí, fiz vários desenhos, busquei referências em materiais como os mármores”, indica. “Esta é uma edição realmente especial para Roma, onde você vê aqui obras que provavelmente eu não vou produzir novamente, porque são feitas especialmente para cá.”

I met Carlos Moreno when he was delivering taco kits during the pandemic, when we all wanted to eat “out,” but were stuck eating in. Prior to that period Mexican food wasn't well represented in Paris. (A lesser-known fact is that France tried to colonize Mexico twice in the mid-1800s.) I loved Carlos' food and we had a few nice conversations on the sidewalk when he made his deliveries.Since then he's gone on to open his own restaurant in Paris, Comer. As I mention in the video, you might not think you want to go to a Mexican restaurant in Paris, but I can assure you that yes, you do. It's really, really good. His cooking is based in traditional Mexican fare with lively moles and amazing salsas, as well as a menu that changes based on the season and what's available, which includes tostadas with raw tuna crudo, peas and citrus, tacos with pork al pastor, a mille-feuille of fresh tomatoes with housemade salsa macha, and a truly melt-in-your-mouth horneado of beef. One item on the dessert menu that's a particular favorite are his mole brownies, which are slightly spicy, and served with a vanilla atole sauce and mezcal.I was happy that when I asked Carlos to stop by and make his famous brownies with me, he said yes. We didn't make the vanilla atole sauce (you can find my recipe here), which he spikes with mezcal at Comer, but the brownies were delicious all on their own. In 1882, the German mathematician Ferdinand von Lindemann proved that π was transcendental: it cannot be reduced to a tidy equation, never captured inside the comfortable boundaries expected by mathematicians. For centuries mathematicians tried to “square the circle” — creating a perfect square with the same area as a circle using only classical tools. In 1882, they finally got their answer: impossible. π's transcendence meant the problem itself can never be solved. π sits at the centre of order — wheels, planets, architecture, engineering — but does not obey the rules mathematicians thought would contain it. The more closely pi is examined, the more it slips beyond simple description. But pi also has beauty in it's patterns. π — roughly 3.14 etc etc — is the hidden constant inside every circle: divide the distance around any circle by the distance across it, and written out as a decimal, it goes on forever without ever stopping and without ever falling into a repeating pattern. Southern Africa in the early 1880s had the appearance of something similar. The neat assumptions of empire borders that could be drawn, peoples classified, and territories administered into obedience — were beginning to collide with a far messier reality. The aftermath of the First Anglo-Boer War had humbled imperial confidence, African polities remained powerful actors, and the mineral revolution was creating forces no colonial administrator fully controlled. Like π, South Africa was proving resistant to simple formulas. Emerging at this time was the Afrikaner Bond, led by Jan Hendrick Hofmeyr, his Boeren Beschermings Vereeniging, Farmers Protection Society, had merged with the Bond. Hofmeyr's main aim was to merge the diverse Afrikaner cultural movements from behind the scenes, thus his nickname, The Mole. Cape Prime Minister John Gordon Sprigg was sparring with political humanists, particularly Saul Solomon who owned the Cape Argus. As a liberal member of parliament, he was an articulate defender of African rights, called a friend of the natives and worse by some settlers. He was enticed to sell his paper to the editor at the time, what he didn't know, was that Cecil John Rhodes was secretly backing the sale - no Rhodes owned the Argus. It was in that moment that the Cape lost its important outsider voice, and Rhodes gained a news outlet. The main story the paper was covering after the first Anglo-Boer war was the instability in Basotholand. The Argus and other liberals had taken up the Basotho cause against the land-hungry settlers of the Orange Free State. Shoring up his personal wealth and power, Rhodes was simultaneously using his growing influence in the Cape to protect its northern territories. This was a natural progression, north of Kimberley lay the Vaal River, and the Molopo River. Between the two lay not only the Boers of the Orange Free State and the Transvaal, but the Tswana people. South of the Molopo there were the Thlaping, the Rolong, north of the Molopo the Ngwato chiefdom, ruled by Khama as well as the Kwena under chief Sechele, the Ngwaketse ruled by Gaseitsiwe and soon, his son, Bathoen. The Tswana were tussling with colonial expansion, and navigating the difficult politics of the frontier, keeping the Boer settlers at arm's length. Along the edge of these chief's territory there lay the Great North Road, on the eastern side of the Tswana lands. Transvaal President Paul Kruger was behind efforts to cut off the Road to the North, something the British authorities suspected but couldn't prove. For Cecil Rhodes and British ambitions, these two micro-republics were a geopolitical nightmare. If the Transvaal annexed Stellaland and Goshen which was Paul Kruger's ultimate goal, the Boers would completely block Cape Colony access to the interior of Africa. Rhodes had taken to calling the Great north Road the Suez Canal of South Africa.

We've linked WTC recipes to cook with each! * Coconut milk — Coconut milk's a great dairy-free sub for cream that you can use in curries, smoothies, and soups. In my house though, it's most often used to make coconut rice! * Chipotles en adobo — We used these smoky, spicy peppers today for our mole chicken enchiladas! You can also use them for chipotle black bean enchiladas and cheesy chipotle shrimp tacos. Rarely does a recipe use the whole can, so store your leftover peppers and sauce in an airtight bag in the freezer.* Creamy peanut butter — My house is never without a jar! Again, we used it here in our mole sauce, but I also love mixing it with soy sauce, rice vinegar, and honey for a peanut sauce to serve on noodles or alongside potstickers. This peanut veggie curry is delightful, as are PB&Js, apples with peanut butter, smoothies bulked up with PB… the uses go on and on!* Curry paste — Curry paste packs SO MUCH flavor into just one spoonful! Keep your pantry (or fridge, once you've opened it) stocked with red curry paste (Mike's is my favorite) and you can cook thai chicken chops, one-pot pumpkin chickpea curry, and thai tofu curry noodle soup! * Jarred marinara/tomato sauce — You could make a homemade marinara… or let someone do it for you! I've written many recipes with store-bought jarred marinara/tomato sauce listed as an ingredient because if you get a high-quality brand (my favorite is Rao's), it really does taste homemade and will save you so much time and effort. Stock up on a jar to be able to cook 30-minute chicken Parm meatballs, messy meatball sliders, shortcut shakshuka, and 5-ingredient eggplant marinara.
