In 1882, the German mathematician Ferdinand von Lindemann proved that π was transcendental: it cannot be reduced to a tidy equation, never captured inside the comfortable boundaries expected by mathematicians. For centuries mathematicians tried to “square the circle” — creating a perfect square with the same area as a circle using only classical tools. In 1882, they finally got their answer: impossible. π's transcendence meant the problem itself can never be solved. π sits at the centre of order — wheels, planets, architecture, engineering — but does not obey the rules mathematicians thought would contain it. The more closely pi is examined, the more it slips beyond simple description. But pi also has beauty in it's patterns. π — roughly 3.14 etc etc — is the hidden constant inside every circle: divide the distance around any circle by the distance across it, and written out as a decimal, it goes on forever without ever stopping and without ever falling into a repeating pattern. Southern Africa in the early 1880s had the appearance of something similar. The neat assumptions of empire borders that could be drawn, peoples classified, and territories administered into obedience — were beginning to collide with a far messier reality. The aftermath of the First Anglo-Boer War had humbled imperial confidence, African polities remained powerful actors, and the mineral revolution was creating forces no colonial administrator fully controlled. Like π, South Africa was proving resistant to simple formulas. Emerging at this time was the Afrikaner Bond, led by Jan Hendrick Hofmeyr, his Boeren Beschermings Vereeniging, Farmers Protection Society, had merged with the Bond. Hofmeyr's main aim was to merge the diverse Afrikaner cultural movements from behind the scenes, thus his nickname, The Mole. Cape Prime Minister John Gordon Sprigg was sparring with political humanists, particularly Saul Solomon who owned the Cape Argus. As a liberal member of parliament, he was an articulate defender of African rights, called a friend of the natives and worse by some settlers. He was enticed to sell his paper to the editor at the time, what he didn't know, was that Cecil John Rhodes was secretly backing the sale - no Rhodes owned the Argus. It was in that moment that the Cape lost its important outsider voice, and Rhodes gained a news outlet. The main story the paper was covering after the first Anglo-Boer war was the instability in Basotholand. The Argus and other liberals had taken up the Basotho cause against the land-hungry settlers of the Orange Free State. Shoring up his personal wealth and power, Rhodes was simultaneously using his growing influence in the Cape to protect its northern territories. This was a natural progression, north of Kimberley lay the Vaal River, and the Molopo River. Between the two lay not only the Boers of the Orange Free State and the Transvaal, but the Tswana people. South of the Molopo there were the Thlaping, the Rolong, north of the Molopo the Ngwato chiefdom, ruled by Khama as well as the Kwena under chief Sechele, the Ngwaketse ruled by Gaseitsiwe and soon, his son, Bathoen. The Tswana were tussling with colonial expansion, and navigating the difficult politics of the frontier, keeping the Boer settlers at arm's length. Along the edge of these chief's territory there lay the Great North Road, on the eastern side of the Tswana lands. Transvaal President Paul Kruger was behind efforts to cut off the Road to the North, something the British authorities suspected but couldn't prove. For Cecil Rhodes and British ambitions, these two micro-republics were a geopolitical nightmare. If the Transvaal annexed Stellaland and Goshen which was Paul Kruger's ultimate goal, the Boers would completely block Cape Colony access to the interior of Africa. Rhodes had taken to calling the Great north Road the Suez Canal of South Africa.

Life is not measured by how much one owns.'Then Jesus told this story: ‘There was a rich man who had some land, which grew a good crop. He thought to himself, “What will I do? I have no place to keep all my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and other goods. Then I can say to myself, ‘I have enough good things stored to last for many years. Rest, eat, drink, and enjoy life!'”‘But God said to him, “Foolish man! Tonight your life will be taken from you. So who will get those things you have prepared for yourself?”'‘This is how it will be for those who store up things for themselves and are not rich toward God.'” Luke 12:15-21 (NCV)“Jesus said to his followers, ‘So I tell you, don't worry about the food you need to live, or about the clothes you need for your body. And you are worth much more than birds.'” Luke 12:22-24 (NCV)“Don't store treasures for yourselves here on earth where moths and rust will destroy them and thieves can break in and steal them.

Place-Goers Week continues on TIYA, an acronym my guest—comedian/actor/YouTuber Danny Catlow—attempts to pronounce in this episode and we agree doesn't quite roll off the tongue. WE COVER SO MUCH GROUND IN THIS EPISODE. It starts with talk of how we met each other when my improv group Computer stayed on his couch for a festival in Austin when he was 18 and I was in my mid-20s. Strange! And then it ramps up (or cooks down?) into an exploration of grief in its many forms as Danny attempts to break the podcast's record for number of "comas" mentioned in an episode. We talk about: male hosting, sleep anxiety, bad breakup, mom dying young, contrarianism & shamelessness, play therapy, falling in love with restaurants, kids grieving performatively, Six Feet Under, mono no aware.Support the show and get the TIYA After Dark feed on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/thisisyourafterlifeFollow Danny:https://www.youtube.com/@Place-Goershttps://www.instagram.com/strongdannycatlow/Follow/contact This Is Your Afterlife:https://thisisyourafterlife.com/https://www.instagram.com/thisisyourafterlife/thisisyourafterlifepodcast@gmail.comMusic by TIYA house band Lake Mary:https://lakemary.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/chaz.prymek/Artwork by Matt Sage:https://www.instagram.com/matthewjsage/

Thanks to everyone who joined for today's Substack live cooking demo — if you couldn't make it, find a full replay above! In the demo, I cooked smoky mole chicken enchiladas with lime crema, a recipe that turns a few humble pantry staples (peanut butter, chocolate chips, tortillas, tomato paste, spices, and chipotles en adobo!) into a delicious weeknight dinner. The only fresh ingredients you'll need are chicken breasts, white onion, a red bell pepper, some shredded cheese, sour cream, and a lime!Recipes that rely heavily on pantry staples are easy to make on nights when the fridge is mostly bare — they can also be more budget-friendly, since the cost-per-use of ingredients like peanut butter and spices is often quite low.Thank you to Thrive Market for sponsoring today's live cook-along, which allowed us to make it free for all subscribers! Thank you also to Thrive for making it so very easy for me to keep my pantry stocked up with high-quality ingredients (at an excellent price point!).In addition to pantry staples, Thrive is my go-to source for kids snacks and clean home products — I love that everything they sell is free from more than 1,000 artificial, synthetic, and GMO ingredients. I also LOVE their app and use it to immediately add ingredients to my cart as soon as I finish them, so that I don't have to write them down or try to remember later.Sign up here to get 30% off your first order (STOCK UP!) and a free $60 gift. Now's a great time because everyone — new and existing members — can get 25% off many products right now during their Friends & Family sale, which runs through Saturday, May 2nd. Also FYI that new-to-Thrive What To Cook Insiders get $100 off their first four orders! While we're talking pantry staples, here are a handful of ingredients that pack a TON of flavor that I always keep on hand. We've linked WTC recipes to cook with each! * Coconut milk — Coconut milk's a great dairy-free sub for cream that you can use in curries, smoothies, and soups. In my house though, it's most often used to make coconut rice! * Chipotles en adobo — We used these smoky, spicy peppers today for our mole chicken enchiladas! You can also use them for chipotle black bean enchiladas and cheesy chipotle shrimp tacos. Rarely does a recipe use the whole can, so store your leftover peppers and sauce in an airtight bag in the freezer.* Creamy peanut butter — My house is never without a jar! Again, we used it here in our mole sauce, but I also love mixing it with soy sauce, rice vinegar, and honey for a peanut sauce to serve on noodles or alongside potstickers. This peanut veggie curry is delightful, as are PB&Js, apples with peanut butter, smoothies bulked up with PB… the uses go on and on!* Curry paste — Curry paste packs SO MUCH flavor into just one spoonful! Keep your pantry (or fridge, once you've opened it) stocked with red curry paste (Mike's is my favorite) and you can cook thai chicken chops, one-pot pumpkin chickpea curry, and thai tofu curry noodle soup! * Jarred marinara/tomato sauce — You could make a homemade marinara… or let someone do it for you! I've written many recipes with store-bought jarred marinara/tomato sauce listed as an ingredient because if you get a high-quality brand (my favorite is Rao's), it really does taste homemade and will save you so much time and effort. Stock up on a jar to be able to cook 30-minute chicken Parm meatballs, messy meatball sliders, shortcut shakshuka, and 5-ingredient eggplant marinara. What flavor-bomb ingredients is your pantry never without?! For a complete rundown on what I consider to be a perfectly stocked pantry, click here. And for a fun take on this topic, read “If My Pantry Were to Disappear, Here's What I'd Restock Immediately” — a Bon Appétit article written by Alaina Chou that I recently weighed in on! This week Fr. Michael talks about penthos, the deep sorrow for sin, and the tears that can be related to that, using the writings of St. John Climacus as a jumping off point. He talks about sorrow for sins of the world and the different types of tears we can experience.References:Thirty Steps to Heaven by Vassilios PapavassiliouThe Ladder of Divine Ascent by St. John ClimacusThe Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse by Charlie MackesyQuote from St. John Climacus"In the domain of creation, as in that of compunction, there is that which moves itself and that which is moved by some other agent. When the soul grows tearful, weeps, and is filled with tenderness, and all this without having striven for it, let us run for the Lord has arrived uninvited and is holding out to us the sponge of loving sorrow, the cool waters of blessed sadness with which to wipe away the record of our sins. Guard these tears like the apple of your eye until they go away, for they have a power greater than anything that comes from our own efforts and our own meditation."Follow and Contact Us!Follow us on Instagram and FacebookWe're on YouTube!Join our Goodreads GroupFr. With the Wicked Weaver defeated, the trio of Antistrophe, Caoimhe, and Nicky return to their hunt for the crest of the western hall, and their search will lead them into places unlike any they've ever seen. Meanwhile, in the High Masque, tensions grow as the newest members of House Deadwind continue to make new connections among rival clans of Alteros. Will they find the masks they need to open the door before suspicions solidify into peril? This week on Perpetua: The Castle Eschatonica 06 Perpetua Guide [Community Addendum Part 04] I'm Alukard83, and I thought it would be nice to get together a section listing all of the Villains we've encountered at this point. Remember: This isn't ever enemy or even every badguy, it's every Villain. That's a specific thing in Perpetua: It's someone who has their own pool of special points they can use (Ultima points) and it's someone who gives the party Fabula points when they show up. So far, this is them, in order of appearance. Draconic Elf Woman (Name Unknown) Unlike most Villains (who seem to be campaign-specific), this lady can pop up in both the eastern and western scenarios really early on, though players might not realize it at first. The Little Snail crew can bump into her at the 'top' of the Dragon Tower, where you can get a close up on her scales and talons. And then team ABC can see a reflection of her in Burzin, where her Elven qualities are really played up. It's the same basic character model, but it seems like maybe the textures were different, or she had some sort of special effect in the reflection? I wonder why different parts of her were emphasized in those different places? Genuine Sincere You don't actually see him second, but you do see his handiwork. He tries to assassinate Vinnor Jekk, Veile's mentor and member of the Luminaries. Genuine is an old crimeworld friend of Nicky, and is now part of the Night's Own, a group loyal to Caliginia. Eventually, the party has to fight him if they want to escape from Calstega Bay. He escapes that fight when it breaks bad for him, but his location after that remains unknown. Caliginia, Fated Darkness Speaking of the Night's Own… This Goddess of Darkness first shows up at the end of the first big story arc in the Little Snail campaign and kidnaps Vinnor Jekk. It's not exactly clear what her motives are (or what her connection to Veile is), but given her actions it's pretty clear she's trying to stop Veile from reaching the White Lectern ritually halting the cycle. Aisling Revanj She's a hexcloak with a specialization in Fire. She showed up at the very end of the Burzin boss fight and prevents Lady Teribald from revealing the identity of the mysterious Elf that visited the town. Are the two of them connected? Where do the rest of the Hexcloaks fit in here? Atlas We don't know much about this ancient architect. Elena found evidence of him tied to Rilspur and the rest of the Passikan megadungeons. We learn that the Passikans themselves never existed in Perpetua, but somehow their ruins do. And that was Atlas' doing. Weird. He says they're going "to return," but what does that even mean? Marshal Opal You first meet the Marshal at the cooking competition in Calstega Bay, but eventually come to learn that this military commander of the Valte is part of Nights Own later on in the main story. What we know about her is that where Commodore Onyx is more focused on the Valte sky armada, Opal leads the ground troops (and specifically the ones searching for clues and relics related to the Perpetuan cycle). Interesting! And hey, what the hell is up with the Night's Own anyway (or as I like to call it "The Fell Organization, since that's what Elena calls it in dialog, and I think she rocks). Thereus Aegir Leader of the Hexcloaks, clearly the biggest A-Hole in the whole game so far. You first directly encounter him in Cenn, City of Iron Chains. Personally, I can't stand people like this, who act all high and mighty and who try to manipulate and provoke you into either fighting them or fighting for them. I cannot wait to kick this guy's butt, big time. Elom The big angry dragon mole laying siege to Cenn. So like, we all see it right? This is just "Mole" backwards. Is that how all the dragons work? D.G. Flay Aegier is the biggest a-hole, but this weird pied piper guy might be the evilest villain so far. At least, that's how he feels. He's slimy and creepy and all those bugs he's associated with? NO thanks. Reminds me of the villain from the movie with the weird aliens.
