Two more short, disturbing tales of Love, somehow classified as "Weird". A girl is saved and smitten by a ghostly and supernaturally handsome man! Another girl's mother hates her taste in Rock 'n' Roll music! What do these stories have in common? It's hard to say, but they're both absurdly funny and weirdly entertaining!Reach out to us at MyComicalRomance2020@gmail.com! Or find us on Facebook at MyComicalRomance.

Most fans primarily think of Jack Kirby as the co-inventor of the Marvel Universe and the genius behind classic series like the New Gods. But Kirby also created the whole genre of romance comics, in collaboration with his partner Joe Simon, and together the pair created some truly memorable stories. In today's episode, Amir and Jason look at three of those stories and are frankly amazed by how great they are. If you only know King Kirby from stuff like Fantastic Four, you know only part of the story! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/classiccomics/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/classiccomics/support

Tony Farina from Indie Comics Spotlight joins me for a discussion of the romance genre in comics. We go down a more treacherous path with this episode, with a trigger warning for content that relates somewhat uncomfortably to pedophilia. In this story, reclusive, nerdy George doesn't want to party with any of the other kids on the beach -- he keeps to himself and his books, overlooking his obligation to make himself available to all the interested girls. Crafty Diane reveals to her diary how she schemes to trick George into falling for her -- by pretending to be a "kid" -- a 12-year-old girl -- rather than the eligible young woman that she is... Will George fall for the trap? Or will he notice that his "pal" isn't quite the child she pretends to be...?

Maybe she wants a super-hero instead? Will Jim the pacifist give in to Linda's demands and beat up some hooligans for her, or is she right, that he's just a coward...?

This is the comic that "they dared us to print"! Who dared them, we're not sure, but the story concerns "Liz," a girl who is "strange," in that she doesn't seem to like boys! The other girls tease her and her mother is deeply concerned. Back in 1974, it was not easy being different, and a romance comic might not have been the best place to find guidance...
In this brief but rather infamous story, published in 1970, naive young Beverly likes going on dates with handsome Nick, but he is so bossy and gruff, telling her what to eat, where to go, taking total charge of the relationship... she wonders if it always has to be this way with a man. Then she attends a rally for "Female Freedom," and her eyes are opened to the inequalities all around her! But how will Beverly's love life fare, now that No Man is Her Master??
This is a special episode for several reasons. We have an (experimental) accompanying Youtube video for the first time, which you can find beginning at:https://youtu.be/6ZvHybw_x3w. There you can see not only our smiling faces, but images from the artwork we're presenting. This includes some famous paintings by Roy Lichtenstein, who "borrowed" romance comic images for his artwork. We talk about this phenomenon, then delve into the adventure attached to one of his most popular works, "Run for Love"!Here we find the unfortunate Vickie, the ugly (or less gorgeous) duckling among her sisters, who is, however, a scholar, a top-flight mechanic, life guard, among other accomplishments, but wouldn't you know it, she can't seem to get a Man! Until she happens upon the rudest, most unappreciative man you'll ever find, so of course she falls head over heels for him...

This episode we take a look our very first makeover story! Astrid Franklin has a dreamy husband, but all she cares about is keeping the apartment clean. She doesn't at all tend to her weight, her hair, her...hunchback? What will she do when she learns the hard way that it's a woman's RESPONSIBILITY to be attractive to her man if she expects to keep him?Once again we're tackling an issue that doesn't exactly hold to feminist beliefs but this is a story that takes the physical transformation of the makeover trope to another level! Marvel at the plastic surgeon who does everything but his job. Wonder at how easy it is to become a movie star. And be boggled once again by the weird mind of Ogden Whitney!
Poor Margie was never very smart. In fact, we learn that she was truly "The Brainless Type"! So why did she have the misfortune to fall in love with -- literally -- a rocket scientist? Sue is a typical teenager in the early 1970s, trying to find her place in a changing world. She's got a loving boyfriend and a caring father, but her mother is a "Women's Lib" activist, who doesn't seem to trust any man who comes into Sue's life. How will her mom react when Sue takes a job at the local gas station -- putting her own boyfriend out of work -- but her boss seems to take more than a business interest in her?
In this episode we review the first-ever Romance Comic story, from 1947’s “Young Romance” by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby: “I Was a Pickup!” Poor Toni got herself a bad reputation as a “pick-up” – a girl who once let herself get picked up by a boy, and now all the guys think they can take advantage of her. But all she wants is true love like any “good” girl…
Doris is someone we can really relate to! She's obsessed with Romance Comics... She avoids and rejects all the unworthy suitors of the real world, preferring the fantasies of love and happiness that she finds in the illustrated stories of her comics. So what happens when a "real" man comes along, who also loves Romance Comics, to disrupt her dreamy thoughts?
Poor Cora has confronted such disappointing failures throughout her young life: not having the prettiest dress at a party, not being chosen Best Student... Now she's determined to succeed in the world of business, and she's not going to allow something as unimportant as "love" to distract her. But what is she to do when a handsome co-worker starts to show interest, and warns her that he may be her one chance at True Love... should she still pursue her career dream, and possibly miss out on the opportunity that happens only "Once to Every Girl"??Another fun romp with, oh yeah, a trigger warning for sexual assault. If that's love, maybe Cora should stick to her job after all.

And this year, there are quite a number of new comics devoted to love and relationships...and with curious twists. And speaking of twists, they begin their show by discussing the first two issues of the new Image Comics series, Twisted Romance. This is a four-issue anthology published weekly throughout the month of February, and in issues #1 and #2 we see comics contributions from the creators Alex de Campo, Katie Shelly, Sarah Horrocks, Alejandra Gutierrez, and Meredith McClaren, with short prose offerings from Magen Cubed and Vita Ayala. From there they go to Death of Love #1 (Image Comics), written by Justin Jordan with art by Donal Delay. Much like Twisted Romance, this is a skewed look at love -- and this one includes assholes and drugs. Following that, Gene and Derek discuss one more recent release from Image Comics, Tee Franklin and Jenn St-onge's Bingo Love. This is a unique LGBT narrative that focuses on the relationship of older citizens. While intended for teen readers, this is a graphic novel that can be appreciated by all ages. After that they visit, once again, the wacky world of Craig Yoe and his partner Clizia Gussoni. Weird Love, Vol. 6: So This Is Love! (IDW Publishing/Yoe Books) is the latest collection of their Weird Love series, classic romance stories from the 1950s and 1960s that not only appear warped to our contemporary eyes, but were probably strange to their original audiences. And finally, the guys wrap up their special Valentine's Day episode with an offering from DC Comics, Young Monsters in Love. Much like last October's DC House of Horror, this is an extra-long seasonal anthology issue written and drawn by a who's who of DC creators. Included are stories focusing on, among others, Swamp Thing, Man-Bat, Raven, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Solomon Grundy, Deadman, the Creature Commandos, and (one of the guys' favorites) Monsieur Mallah and the Brain. Love is definitely in the air this week!

What were the creative titles in 1968 that echoed these internal changes? What does it mean for DC when its old pulp writer editors are replaced with next generation artists? Join Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) as they travel back to 1980's New York City to discuss the 1986-1987 series Angel Love by Barbara Slate. Luckily this is they discovered their passion and... ahem, talent... for voice acting! During the summer of 1986 most DC Comics featured a most curious house-ad promising, among other things at least the passing mention of COCAINE?!! What many comics enthusiasts may not know is this book actually DID came out later on that year! Angel Love is a New York transplant coming from a quiet corner in Scranton, Pennsylvania hoping to strike it big as a cartoonist. Along the way she will face drug-addicted boyfriends, a vapid (and more fun to read about) roommate, a bum who likes to sleep on her couch, and countless chatty cockroaches. Is this what life in the big city’s all about? It's a doozy and makes for a great installment of Romance Comics Theatre. Along the way, we talk up IDW's Weird Love series, Max Headroom, and Shakespeare. Kid you not. In our third episode, we use an old western romance comic to discuss the introduction of genre into romance and vice-versa. That story: 1950's Calamity Jane from Cowgirl Romances #1, which is naturally presented in glorious Romance Comics Theatre fashion. Sorry about the accents, but I did manage to get two genuine Texans in the main role - my sister and brother-in-law on my Texas side! STRONG LANGUAGE - LISTENER DISCRETION ADVISED! ALSO, AWKWARD DATING!!! If everybody jumped off a bridge, would I jump too? Apparently so! Listening to a lot of fun comic book podcasts made me get into the game! I got my friends Bass, Furn and Marty near some microphones and we started talking about comic book romances and classic romance comics. Hey, comics fans have mostly ignored this entire genre of comics! No longer! In the first episode, we introduce ourselves, talk about our favorite comic book romances, and dissect the first story of the very first romance comic, Young Romance #1's "I Was a Pick-Up!" (1947) by Simon & Kirby! Also featuring Romance Comics Theatre! The topic is ROMANCE COMICS in this episode of the Deviant Robot ComicsCast - and our comics trinity talk Scott Pilgrim, Deadly Class, Mad Love, Saga, and Sex Criminals. In the news section of the show is the Deadpool trailer, the fate (and wisdom) of the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum, and the London Super ComicCon! Which looks like it'll be pretty rad.
In this episode Kara drops fierce Romance Comics knowledge.
For their final OFFICIAL entry into the 75th Anniversary of Green Lantern celebration, the guys are graced by the presence of Jacque Nodell, the granddaughter of Alan Scott creator Martin Nodell! There was really no better way to tack an exclamation point on the celebration! And if that wasn't enough, after the break, the guys review the first EVER 'Green Lantern #1' from 1941 featuring the talents of Martin Nodell himself! An interview AND a landmark Golden Age review? TOP THAT! Haha! Please visit our site at http://www.LanternCast.com
