In this latest episode in the Two Kens collaborative series on American politics and Christian nationalism, Fong and Kemp point out the jarring historical parallels with how Germany's Hitler and Hungary's Orban were able to dismantle their countries democracies so quickly. This episode is a call to action and resistance for every American who is now seeing the clear signs of decay in our democracy. Transition and outro music credit to The Isley Brothers and their "Fight the Power" anthem from 1975.
Kemp and Fong agree. We need each other now more than ever. Steve Bannon predicted the strategy of this new administration. He declared, “We're gunna flood the zone with sh*t.” He was prophetic. The Zone has experienced a flash flood. The two Kens thought the new President's intent would be to drain the swamp - but the flash flood of Executive Orders, the defunding, the closures, the pardons have all had the intended effect. None of us, not the politicians, not the media, not the pundits - none of us can keep up. The two podcasters review several articles that have been illuminating. One tells the story of Hungary: Viktor Orbán's takeover of their vibrant democracy, turning it into an authoritarian state. The Atlantic published a thorough review of the history of Hitler's first 53 days - in which he dismantled Germany's democracy by using the Constitution to accomplish that goal. And then, V.P. J.D. Vance emerges as an amateur theologian, justifying the neglect of the marginalized by coming up with a “God-ordained hierarchy” that in essence, gets us off the hook for caring for our neighbors. It's a collaboration of the Two Kens to stay on the alert, speak the truth, and maintain our vigilance. When Ken Fong saw the flames coming over the ridge from his front yard, he voluntarily evacuated along with his adult daughter. His home church, First Baptist of Pasadena, opened its doors to evacuees. Fong joined them for two nights. Ken Kemp, dealing with power outs, high winds, and menacing fire danger, called on Ken for a conversation around this catastrophic fire season - especially for Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Fong's wedding, scheduled for this weekend, meant that a late-night departure from his home included a tuxedo and patent leather shoes. At the church, Ken shares the dramatic collection of painful stories he encountered the two nights he slept in the church. In addition, the two Kens talk about the passing of President Jimmy Carter and his powerful legacy.Ken's Substack | Become a PatronSupport the show
My longtime friend and fellow podcaster Ken Kemp (The Beached White Male) lives on the far end of Orange County, so his house is far from the fires in SoCal. But many of his out-of-state friends don't know this, so they've been reaching out to he and his wife for reassurances of their safety. They've suffered several days-long power outages due to the high winds, though, so it's not like he's been spared. Knowing that our house is in one of the areas threatened by the Eaton Fire, he called first to hear how Janessa and I were doing. Once he heard that my family and my house were fine, he then suggested that we should do an episode about this current conflagration. Of course I agreed. We also compared notes on the legacy of Pres. Jimmy Carter, who'd recently died at the age of 100. In editing this episode, I realized that Kemp and I had confused two previous California wildfires. He talks about the Paradise Fires in 2003, and I was referring to the fire in Butte County that destroyed the town of Paradise in 2018.

“I remember my dad telling me when I was 12 or 13 that I was too old to play with toys,” reports internationally known Barbie collector Jim Taylor. He opened Season 4 of Smart Sex, Smart Love by talking about why he began collecting Barbies, and now is the proud owner of more than 3,000 dolls. “I played with traditional boy toys growing up,” he points out. “I loved transformers.” As he got older, his desire to play with toys never diminished. Finally, when Taylor was well into his 20s, he decided, “I can do what I want, and I'm going to buy toys if I feel like it.” He has no “scientific” process for doll collecting. “Some people collect celebrity dolls; others collect ball gown dolls or Kens. Buy what you love, and you will love your collection,” he announces. “It's what makes me happy.” He urges others: “Follow your bliss. I no longer say to myself, ‘you're a grown man, you can't buy that.' Buy yourself a doll if it makes you happy!” Learn more about doll collecting and Jim Taylor's story in this Smart Sex, Smart Love podcast.

Ken joins Ken Fong for a morning after the election review. It's not so much an autopsy on what went wrong as it is a reflection of their visceral response to the news that the 45th President won a decisive victory. He will become the 47th President of the United States. More than half the nation is celebrating this week - but celebrating what? The other less than half is deeply disappointed, fearful, depressed, and stunned. Once again, pollsters missed it. As a former senator put it, “Fear sells. Anger sells. Retribution and revenge sell. Us versus Them sells.” But an appeal to “the better angels of our nature”? Not so much. The two Kens call on several sources for insight and perspective, including Frank Schaeffer, Nadia Bolz Weber, and Robert Reich. Become a Patron | Ken's Substack PageSupport the show
After Trump was declared the winner over Harris, long-time friends and podcasters Ken Fong and Ken Kemp felt a need to see how the other was doing. If, like them, you're in shock that more than 70 million fellow Americans chose to give Trump another turn as the most powerful person in the free world, you'll probably find a degree of comfort in knowing that you're not alone.
Margot Robbie just had a baby boy, and feminists on Twitter are so angry about it that they're publicly wishing for harm to come to the child. No, we're not kidding. Feminists are allegedly wishing harm on Margot Robbie's newborn son, expecting her to raise him as a girl due to her role as Barbie. The gender reveal trend is causing mental health issues and toxic behavior, with women fantasizing about having girls and being devastated by boys. The Barbie movie is accused of being degrading to men, portraying them as suckers and suggesting Kens should have "almost as many rights as women". Some mothers reportedly view having a boy as a tragedy, wishing the baby dead in the crib for not being a girl. Internet and Hollywood are criticized for perpetuating a narrative that men are toxic and women are victims, ignoring the existence of good men and toxic women. Margot Robbie and her husband, Tom Ackerley, have welcomed their first child, a baby boy born on October 17, 2024. The couple, who met on the set of "Suite Française" in 2013 and married in 2016, had kept their pregnancy private until Robbie was spotted with a baby bump during a vacation in Lake Como, Italy, in July. Robbie, known for her roles in "Barbie" and "The Wolf of Wall Street," has expressed her excitement about motherhood, with sources noting that she and Ackerley have "wanted to start a family for quite some time.
The two Ken's reconvene at about 23 days out. The predictions seem to be coming true. The conspiracies, the threats, the misinformation, the falsehoods, and name-calling all proliferate. Kemp and Fong remain stymied that the race could possibly be this close. From the outset, the Two Kens make movie recommendations: Kemp - Bad Faith and Fong - Conclave. It opens up a conversation about Catholicism, J.D. Vance's conversion and the legacy of Vatican II. As the election closes in, there are hopeful signs. Malcolm Gladwell and Michael Moore weigh in. Kamala Harris's energy and focus remain strong - she seems undeterred by the vicious, fabricated attacks. She appears fearlessly in a wide range of interviews across the media spectrum. With the former president's and his running mate's fallacious charges of theft, mismanagement, and “incompetence,” they frustrate recovery efforts prompted by the twin hurricane tragedies - Helene and Milton. The former president's claim of superior genes and the suggestion that undocumented immigrants carry “bad genes” comes right out of the blatantly racist pseudoscience of eugenics. They finish with some suggestions on how to survive until election day - and better, to do all we can to secure this critical victory. SHOW NOTESBecome a Patron | Ken's Substack PageSupport the show
VP Harris was inserted into the race just a few months ago, and now we're only 3 weeks away from the day when all the votes will be cast and counted. After that, the whole world will finally know who will be the 47th POTUS. Harris has proven to be a much more formidable adversary to Trump, and yet most polls are still saying that this race is too close to call. Podcasters Fong and Kemp address why it's so uncomfortable living with uncertainty, and how important it is for us all to learn to embrace it, even as we cling to our hopes and dreams until we need to let them go.

On Tuesday night, September 3rd, Trump and Harris locked horns in what now looks to be the first and final debate between the two leading candidates for America's next POTUS. Even if you didn't watch it, by now, days later, you've no doubt heard that Harris prevailed mightily and convincingly over Trump. Regardless of the outcome, Fong and Kemp were ready to weigh in the very next day. If you listened to their episode following the Biden v. Trump debate (June 29, EP 382), you'll quickly notice a huge boost in their morale! Will how she performed at this debate give VP Harris the win in November? Will the GOP now start to quickly step away from their frontrunner like the Dems did with Biden in June? (Hint: hell will freeze over before they'd do this.) Will the upcoming debate between Sen. Vance and Gov. Walz be a carbon copy of this one?
The Two Kens are back with their take on the Presidential Debate. Just a few days later, the spin masters have already had their impact, obscuring Kamala Harris' blistering victory over her opponent, Donald Trump. Most everyone agreed, including Republican politicians and pundits, that Harris won. Kemp and Fong recorded the day after the debate, with fresh commentary from start to finish. Harris took command from the beginning, with a confident handshake and greeting to a surprised and hesitant Trump. Some 67 million viewers watched the debate. The Two Kens celebrate “the sweet smell of hope” as Harris keeps the high energy enthusiasm alive. She invites the television audience to take in a Trump rally to see the madness for themselves. Trump takes her bait, reverting to crowd size, tropes about immigration, Project 2025, and insane asylums. Perhaps his most outrageous Trump comment was his self-assured claim that immigrants “are eating the dogs!” When challenged by a fact-checking moderator, he doubled down. This false claim has sparked a huge controversy and put the town of Springfield, Ohio in the crosshairs of bomb threats and racist attacks. Trump pathetically visited the “Spin Room,” claiming a victory that was not his. It's a lively retrospective on an historic night.Ken's Substack Article - “They're Eating the Dogs”Become a Patron | Ken Fong's Podcast PageSupport the show
The morning after the 2024 Democratic Convention closed with a dazzling acceptance speech from Kamala Harris. Ken Fong joins Ken for a week's end review. Harris is the first woman of color in history to receive a party's nomination for President of the United States. Kemp's Substack Article became the theme of their talk, rooted in Abraham's Inaugural Address from 1861 when he appealed to “the better angels of our nature.” They compare and contrast the RNC with the DNC. The Republican's dystopian theme - “this country is going to hell” - will be remembered as a stark contrast with the Democrats by claiming “a future and a hope” and by calling for freedom from the unAmerican blueprint of Project 2025. Kemp says, “The DNC is an appeal to the better angels of our nature.” They discuss the poignant comments of Frank Schaeffer - the “atheist who believes in God” - on the presidential contest. The son of the famed Christian apologist Francis Schaeffer, Frank Jr. predicts utter disaster if Donald Trump wins. The two Ken's hit the highlights of the week - Joe Biden's passing of the baton to Harris. Michelle Obama's lightning bolt of a speech riveted everyone in the packed arena and the millions of us who tuned in. “Who's going to tell him that the job he's currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs'?” she said. The surprise appearance of the Central Park Five reminded us of Trump's efforts to have these innocent men executed. So many more. Adam Kinsinger. Gabby Gifford. Republican Mayor John Giles. Oprah Winfrey. Doug Emhoff. Kamala's sister, Maya. Tim Walz's rousing acceptance speech as his son Gus celebrated through his tears with irrepressible joy. And finally, the nominee herself, Kamala Harris accepted the nomination to the roar of the crowd. “America, let us show each other - and the world - who we are. And what we stand for. Freedom. Opportunity. Compassion. Dignity. Fairness. And endless possibilities.”Become a Patron | Ken's Substack Page | Asian America the Ken Fong PodcastSupport the Show.
The 2024 DNC ended Thursday night, so the next morning podcasters Fong and Kemp were excited to compare notes about what they heard, saw and felt during throughout this 4-night gathering of Democratic delegates to make VP Harris and Gov. Walz their 1-2 punch to keep the White House and also to prevent Trump, MAGA, and Project 2025 from gaining power. As Kemp put it, the GOP's RNC portrayed American as a bleak and doomed dystopia if Harris and Walz were to win. But the Dem's DNC painted a compelling, utopian vision of America where every person was free to make his, hers, or their own choices, while simultaneously promoting the common good. We also discuss Frank Schaeffer's position that evangelical Christians as a whole won't dump Trump before November due to their particular prophetic framing of what's happening.

The Two Ken's reconvene to talk about Joe Biden's decision to step aside and pass the torch. He gave his full endorsement to his Vice President. Kamala Harris quickly emerged as the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party. It triggered an explosion of enthusiasm. After the assassination attempt, the Republican Campaign reported that their candidate was a “changed man.” Determined to be a uniter, he emerged from his close brush with death as a candidate for President of the whole country, not just half. It lasted for only a few minutes in the opening pre-packaged acceptance speech. He strayed from the teleprompter - proving that he hadn't changed at all. Republicans, caught off guard and flat-footed, launched their attack - much of it personal. Many referred to the Vice President as a “D.E.I. hire.” J.D. Vance talks about “childless cat ladies.” Religious leaders, like the New Apostolic Reformation “prophet,” Lance Walnau, call her a “Jezebel.” The two Kens consider the in-depth meaning of these personal attacks. They unpack the unfolding events, noting that V.P. Kamala Harris has exceeded expectations, launching a nationwide movement that has brought to the campaign a sweet smell of success.Become a Patron | Ken's Substack Page | Asian America, the Ken Fong PodcastSupport the Show.
Even before the majority of delegates to the upcoming DNC had lined up behind Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Trump and the MAGA crowd began to use ad hominem attacks against her. Long-time friends and fellow podcasters Fong and Kemp kick things off by talking about their renewed optimism that Trump will be defeated again, then downshift into discussing how the GOP and also White Christian Nationalists are blatantly using racist and misogynist slurs to discredit Harris.

In this episode podcasters Fong and Kemp gamely try to stay out of panic mode in light of President Biden's abysmal performance at the first presidential debate against former President Donald Trump. Did Biden just show 50 million viewers that he was past his prime? Or does a person's performance on a debate stage really tell us how he or she will lead or deal with challenges? Hypothetically, if Biden chooses to drop out, who might the Dems nominate that would not just energize and unite the Dems, but a majority of voters?

My name is Jack and I'm here with my co-host social. And today we have a topic talk. And right now social something that's trending on on TikTok and on on the Internet right now is comes from the the Barbie movie and.00:01:10JackThe question that people are asking themselves is what kind of Barbie are you like, could you describe your Barbie and what kind of Ken are you? So could you describe your Ken? So maybe you could describe your Barbie and I'll describe my Ken.00:01:28XochitlOK, I'm like uh.00:01:32XochitlI don't know.00:01:35XochitlI think I OK. Ideally what I would like to be in fashion Barbie, you know, I have all these clothes and I.00:01:41XochitlI love clothes.00:01:42XochitlBut I don't really dress up that much anymore, like how I used to, but I used to love clothes, so I think I would be like fashion Barbie, you know. But now I'm kind of more like a.00:01:56XochitlLike.00:01:59XochitlMet Barbie or something? I don't know. Like, like a beige Barbie. Something I don't like. Kind of disillusioned with life. Ever so slightly. Yeah.00:02:11JackTrying trying to figure it out, Barbie.00:02:13XochitlTrying to figure it out, Barbie. Yeah, but you know, it's done better this year. I gotta say, the trend, the end of tail end of 27 was a great time where I started a bunch of projects, including our English corner. So with you. So I'm really excited.00:02:29XochitlAbout that and yeah, so maybe right now I would actually be like.00:02:35XochitlAn iconic Barbie that had all the jobs like veterinarian, doctor, Fashionista like you know, the one that's doing everything I'm doing a lot like the English corner, the coffee business, selling clothes.00:02:42JackYeah.00:02:51JackWhat? What kind of clothes, like, talk about the clothes you stuff. Cause I think that that's that would be like I can. I can picture your Barbies clothes because of the you know you you sell clothes on. I I see you post like dresses like you you're you're big into like thrifting right like.00:02:51XochitlYeah.00:03:09XochitlYes, yes.00:03:10JackYeah.00:03:11XochitlYeah, I saw.00:03:11JackSo lots of like prints or something. Is that what they are kind of kind of prints with like UM?00:03:16XochitlIt can be. I think they're just. It just really depends. It's more so for me right now I'm selling like American clothes. So and Mexico American clothes is is popular because it's higher quality. Traditional American garments are high quality like cotton and stuff. But like regular everyday wear.00:03:37XochitlThose is pretty low quality.00:03:39JackYeah.00:03:39XochitlIt's like worse than she and quality or whatever. Like it's very bad. So being that it's so bad, American clothes is quite popular here. So I just kind of pick whatever I think looks nice. And I think other people will like and bring that and sell it.00:03:58XochitlBeer so it could be like uh, dresses with plants or.00:04:03XochitlDresses for graduation or like the.00:04:07XochitlYou know, sweaters and different, just different articles of clothing that I think that will sell and and it's been going pretty well. I think the only issue is like the price point because it's in Mexican peso, so it's it's actually cheap for the US but for Mexicans a lot of people only make.00:04:24XochitlLike.00:04:25Xochitl300 pesos. They're like $15 a day.00:04:28XochitlAnd as you know, most clothes is like.00:04:28JackOhh.00:04:32XochitlAt least 25 bucks or 25 feet.00:04:34JackOhh yeah yeah, even if you buy off the clearance rack or something, you know at Macy's still going to be 20 or 25 bucks, you know.00:04:39XochitlYes.00:04:43XochitlRight. Yeah. So that's kind of just the only thing that I'm struggling with and I'm kind of thinking about bringing in accessories and stuff that are like a little bit cheaper or or maybe like skin care. I've been thinking when I go to Korea about buying like cheap clothes and skin care, I'm selling them here as well. The cool thing about Korea is you can like.00:05:03XochitlShe had like, boxes of stuff back, so.00:05:06발표자Yeah.00:05:07XochitlIt's kind of fun so.00:05:08JackWhat's your? What's your accessory? If you that goes with your your Barbie?00:05:13XochitlOhh, they hadn't suffered one there.00:05:15Jack20 right. Yes, of course, yes.00:05:20XochitlYou basically have 4 successor. At this point it is like I left him for a day and a half to get a couple like that, which is a really, really beautiful village here in Laka.00:05:31JackMHM.00:05:32XochitlFor my birthday trip and he came back and he's all sick and everything. I was like, what's wrong with him? So I took him to the vet today and he was like, oh, he was stressed cause you left him. And then like?00:05:41XochitlHe, like his stomach, probably hurt because he ate like some different food. We we switched him to a different diet and like all that together, made him have like a problem. Like he got Giardia, which is like, you know, travelers area type thing. Yeah. And so it was really. It was really scary.00:05:56JackYeah.00:06:01XochitlBecause you seemed really safe.00:06:02XochitlBut he's doing fine now.00:06:04XochitlBut it's like a fourth successor. I gotta take him everywhere with me, or else he.00:06:07XochitlGets sick, so.00:06:08JackYeah, I'm not sure how how well this Barbie is going to sell the the Barbie with the the duende accessory with diarrhea, but.00:06:17XochitlNo, no diarrhea, but just playing and they're just healthy. Then they're suffering. Yeah.00:06:21JackHow's he doing today? OK.00:06:23XochitlIt's just like a purse dog that you have to take everywhere.00:06:26XochitlHe's looking at.00:06:26JackRight, right. You need you need a. You need a bag, maybe something maybe. Maybe a bag. That's a kind of.00:06:27XochitlMe.00:06:27XochitlNow I'm talking about.00:06:38JackA local like locally made you know what Hawken bag that you could put when they in. That'd be a pretty cool little Barbie, yeah.00:06:45발표자Yes.00:06:46XochitlYeah, I think that would be cool. He's wearing his little sweater right now, too. He's cold, so that would be be like a blue hoodie. Yeah, well, what kind of Ken are you?00:06:51발표자Nice.00:06:55JackUM, yeah, so I'm. I'm definitely like teacher Ken. My my Ken is is has a shaved head. So that's the I'm I'm representing the bald.00:07:00XochitlOh yeah.00:07:08JackThere so bald can, but my accessory would be a a trucker hat, a trucker cap. So you can cover a KENS bald head with a with a nice trucker cap. And I'm trying to think like, what would Ken's what what's what's my uniform?00:07:28JackLet's say my uniform is pair jeans, some tennis shoes at T-shirt and then maybe like because I'm a teacher, I'll throw like a like a a a suit jacket over the top of that. So.00:07:45XochitlHmm.00:07:45JackThis is definitely of the the strangest can ever. But yeah, I think that would be my that would be my, my, my accessory and my outfit. And maybe maybe my school bag. You know, that would be my, you know, putting students, papers and and things like that.00:08:05JackInside that would be my that would be my other accessory. So the trucker hat and and a a a school bag, yeah.00:08:15JackYeah. I don't know. Yeah. Teacher. Teacher care.00:08:18발표자Oh.00:08:19JackYeah.00:08:20XochitlI often see.00:08:20발표자Yeah.00:08:25XochitlWhat was I gonna say? I often see.00:08:30XochitlGen. Z represented is wearing like beanies as well, which you also do.00:08:34JackOhh, that's right. I'm. Yeah, that's when I try to be cool. But it's it's it's like dressing one generation below my my actual station in life.00:08:46JackSo.00:08:46XochitlI don't think so, because every time I see Gen. X like represented in skits, they're always wearing like a they they dress exactly like you. It's so crazy when I see this guy like go skits because he's not Gen. XI. Think he's like a millennial. Maybe he's. No, I think he must be like a millennial and he he pulls, like skits like showing like.00:09:06XochitlRumors that were genex that were ex millennial and Gen. Z.00:09:09XochitlEric, you know, and I definitely relate hard to like a mix between the dense and millennial because you know I'm a customer, but when he does the Gen. X, it looks it's like looks just like you like. It looks so much like I gotta send you because I think you would get a kick out of it. It's so similar to you. And then like the the, the Gen. Z.00:09:30XochitlLike like for example they have like the meeting and the tenses still sleeping.00:09:34JackOh, yeah, yeah, yeah.00:09:34XochitlAnd that is me. That is kind of like me.00:09:38JackI think I'm. I'm a customer as well. Like I'm kind of right between millennial and and Gen. X because I'm like, you know, I'm like a really young Gen. X or a really old Gen. Z or sorry, really old millennial. Yeah.00:09:45XochitlYeah.00:09:50XochitlMillennial, you mean? Yeah.00:09:53XochitlYes.00:09:54JackNo.00:09:55JackI can I can kind of. I can. I can go. I can go either way, depending on my mood for the uh for the day, I guess, yeah.00:09:55XochitlYes.00:10:03XochitlYeah, I'm gonna send you one of those gifts so you can take a look at it. Yeah. Alright. Well, listeners, let us know what kind of Barbie or Ken would you be? I'm curious to know. With the conviction of former POTUS Trump on all 34 counts last week, you might think that that would catalyze many of even his most ardent supporters to call for him to drop out of the current race for the White House. Think again. Fong and Kemp try to discern why the majority of GOP "the party of law and order" politicians are crying foul, validating Trump's own bogus claim that he's a political martyr. But these two veteran podcasters also weigh in on how the Biden camp needs to capitalize on this first known instance when something has finally stuck to "Teflon Don."
Continuing the conversation around the first-ever criminal conviction of the former President, Ken reaches out to Ken Fong. The two podcasters further explore the implications of this watershed, historical moment. Fong opens the podcast by quoting Fox sports writer Colin Cowherd on the trial's outcome. The MAGA Republican spin masters (including Mike Johnson, John Cornyn, Steve Scalese, Elyse Stefanik and many others) are working overtime to convince the American people that the verdict is meaningless. Without evidence or shame or pause, they assert that this is a politically motivated attempt to disrupt the presidential election initiated by the Biden administration, a “weaponization” of the justice system, and a frontal, personal attack on the presumed nominee of the Republican party. When the verdict came down, the two Kens exchanged texts - and that prompted Kemp to write his seventh letter to Senator John Thune, who joined in the chorus of Republican politicians to add to the spin. The two Kens affirm together that the time has come to tell the truth about the fitness of the Republican nominee. Fong draws on several articles that make a powerful, accurate, and compelling case. In this latest episode of The Two Ken's podcast series, Ken Kemp's regular guest Betsey Newenhuyse from Chicago joins us to talk about the ongoing need for regular groups of reliable, religious people, despite the burgeoning exodus from all forms of religion in America. Although unprecedented numbers of us no longer belong to a religious group or have zero-interest in every joining one, most of us haven't found viable alternatives to them. Without anywhere to go regularly, and without a caring community around to help each other navigate life's twists and turns, what might happen to our country?

In this latest installment of The Two Kens series, podcasters Fong and Kemp see the decision by Alabama's Supreme Court to outlaw invitro fertizilation (IVF) as the latest and most blatant example of Christian Nationalists and members of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) to colonize America. They adhere to the historical falsehood that God created this country to be a Christian theocracy, where conservative white Christians use their biased interpretations of the Bible to dictate how everyone must live here. Former POTUS Donald Trump has convinced them that he alone can lead them to victory in this perceived spiritual battle between the forces of good (them) and evil (everyone else).
