We Only Find Them When They're Dead.

For two years, we've discussed The Sandman on our Patreon, one episode at a time, one issue at a time. Periodically, we've dropped certain conversations into the main Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast feed, but it's been a while. Since we're nearly reaching the end of Neil Gaiman's original 75-issue run, we felt compelled to pull a Patreon conversation to all our wonderful listeners' attention. Our "Sleepwalking Through Sandman" Patreon series is an extremely vulnerable experience for us. Lisa read these comics in college, but her memory is foggy and mutated by time. For whatever reason, Brad never read The Sandman when it was initially on comic shop stands. Now, every week, we stumble through this iconic comic book series, desperately trying to absorb what Gaiman and his astonishing collaborators put down on the page. Frequently, we interpret things way off base, but thankfully, our Patrons guide us along and clue us into what we're missing. The result is episodes unlike any other shows Comic Book Couples Counseling produces. We're pretty darn proud of them. The Sandman #70 is the beginning of the end. Is it an epilogue, or is it the climax? Panel by panel, we debate the possibilities as we approach the original Sandman's final issues. A small select group gathers within the Dreaming to pay their last respects to Morpheus while a new (?) Dream works on rebuilding what was lost during the battle with the Furies. For as little as $1 a month (or $12 a year), you can access all our Sandman episodes and hundreds of other bonus podcasts. After finishing our Sandman #70 conversation, you can jump right on into our Sandman #71 conversation, already posted in our Patreon feed HERE. In this episode, we also announce a new Patreon podcast series. It's a show concept we don't see anywhere else online, and we think our listeners will be excited about it. Stay tuned for more information, and join up before San Diego Comic-Con if you want access to that particular comic book party. Sandman #71 was published by DC Comics with a cover date of August 1995. It's written by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Michael Zulli, colored by Daniel Vozzo, seps by Digital Chameleon, lettered by Todd Klein, edited by Karen Berger, associated by Shelly Roeberg, and features a cover by Dave McKean. Sandman created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg. Writers and artists: we're always talking about them. But even though they're the primary movers in the creation of a comic book, they're not everything. Particularly overlooked is the design of the books, especially in physical form. Today's guest, Richard Bruning, knows all about design and how much it contributes to the comic book medium. After serving as editor-in-chief and art director for Capital Comics (overseeing Nexus, Badger, Whisper, and others), he moved to NYC to become design director at DC. Among other accomplishments, Richard contributed to the design of Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and oversaw the branding for Vertigo and DC's first line of graphic novels and collected editions. After a period working on commercial design projects, he returned to DC as a vice president and creative director, where he helped create the DC Spring logo in 2005. Now, he works with his wife (former Vertigo executive editor Karen Berger) on Berger Books, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics.Follow Rich on Twitter: @bruning_rich. _________________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. In which we discuss some work by Neil Gaiman! Sandman recently hit Netflix and we decided to get a little topical! A few weeks later, but better late than never, eh? We discuss how the book came together, we talk about themes, we talk about another book that Neil Gaiman did as well called Books of Magic! This isn't a super-deep dive, but it should be fun nonetheless! What do you think? Do you have something to say? Wanna tell us what you think of our current topic? Have other things to say about other topics? Wanna tell us some sweet recipes for cookies (please)? Let us know! We have social medias! If you see the deranged pencil, you're in the right place! Gaiman is a prolific guy in several mediums with a million words written about him and his works. I felt like just going over what I thought was interesting about his work without getting overly analytical. Anyway... THANKS FOR LISTENING!

Many know the name of the late Don Kiki Berger, who built a vertically operated tobacco operation during the cigar boom. Today Kiki's wife Karen Berger heads up this operation that includes a factory, farms, a retail operation, and the brands of Don Kiki Cigars and K by Karen Berger. This year, Don Kiki/K by Karen Berger marks 25 years that the Bergers have been in the cigar business. As a result, a special, limited premium offering was introduced known as the K by Karen Berger 25th Anniversary by AJ Fernandez. It's a collaboration that is being produced at AJ Fernandez's factory, but it includes tobaccos from both the Fernandez and Berger farms. It's also described as the most full-bodied blend in the company's portfolio to date. PCA 2022 Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-npc

We hope you brought your thickest black mascara, your fishnets, and your leather black trench coat because the GateCrashers are getting all kinds of Goth as we cover The Sandman! It's their first time reading it and the first time Neil Gaiman has been covered on GateCrashers! Jake and Dan both read The Sandman from DC Comics for the first time ever. It's the first episode in nearly 2 years where neither of these hosts has had read the title before preparing for the episode. Spoiler for the episode but they both love The Sandman. Maybe not as much as Wesley Dodds but Dream is getting pretty high on the cool character scale with his goofy little guy posing in his debut series. The series helped kick off DC's iconic Vertigo imprint that features other titles like Swamp Thing and more. With the new Netflix series on the horizon, we decided it was finally time to crash the gates of The Sandman's dream kingdom to see if the comic is one you should check out. It's a great series but you should be prepared for some unsettling topics that may not be for all readers. As always, the first half of the episode is dedicated to telling you a little bit about the series to see if it's for you! We get into the themes explored in the first book of The Sandman. Dan goes on a rant about how good the covers of the series are and how they're iconic. The series first 8 issues are currently available on DC Universe as well as in physical form at most comic book shops and book stores. With the upcoming release of the show, The Sandman should be easy to find where you get your comics! If you don't have a shop, check out Third Eye Comics who is always there to help you find this and many other titles. The boys always may or may not get into a fight in today's cold open... honest mistake. Dreamy, wake up... I don't like this. The Sandman's creative team includes iconic names like Neil Gaiman, Karen Berger, Todd Klein and more! What's covered in the episode: The Sandman Book One Writer: Neil Gaiman Artists: Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Malcolm Jones iii, Chris Bachalo, Michael Zulli, Kelley Jones, Charles Vess, Colleen Doran Colorist: Daniel Vozzo, Zylonol, Steve Oliff Letterer: Todd Klein, John Costanza Cover art by Bree King
With the recent Sandman trailer drop, the world seems re-energized regarding all things Dream King. We are here for it. In fact, we've been reading Neil Gaiman's epic series one issue at a time/one week at a time for more than a year now and recording our thoughts through our Patreon feed. Our Sleepwalking Through Sandman episodes are some of our favorite conversations that we've had in the Love Nest, made all the better by our Patrons providing context and history every week. When we initially launched the show, we plopped the first episode into our main feed, and we thought it was time to give our regular audience another preview. This Sandman #17 episode was initially recorded several months ago, but we think it's one of our best Sandman conversations. We hope you agree with us. As first-time Sandman readers, we're deeply fascinated with Morpheus' romantic relationships. You'll hear how we're struggling to comprehend his behavior toward Nada, and how this deep dive into his relationship with Calliope re-contextualizes the Dream King's actions. We hope you enjoy this chat. Longtime CBCC listeners may have some inkling of what we sound like when we're in full-sweatpants mode, but newcomers could be a little shocked. We can get real dang silly, friends. Enjoy! And please let us know what you think of this podcast series. Sandman #17 was published by DC Comics with a cover date of July 1990. It's written by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Kelley Jones & Malcolm Jones III, lettered by Todd Klein, colored by Robbie Busch(Original) and Daniel Vozzo (Re-Color), assistant edited by Tom Peyer, edited by Karen Berger, and features a cover by Dave McKean. Created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg. She's been called the queen of modern American comics, received all possible awards and recognitions, changed how comics were viewed by the general public and made them mature in front of our eyes, reaching a wider audience for US comics many people thought would never be possible to achieve. From her run as editor of George Perez's Wonder Woman, to Swamp Thing with Alan Moore, to Sandman with Neil Gaiman and the creation and subsequent impact of the beloved (and missed) Vertigo, our guest's quest for innovation and unstoppable urge for finding new, unique voices for comics has made her a reference and revered figure for all of us. Her line of books at Dark Horse Comics, Berger Books, keeps breaking new ground and showing us there is no limits for comics except the ones we impose to ourselves. I am talking, of course, about the incomparable KAREN BERGER! We've talked about life, comics, new voices, why comics, and why she keeps coming back for more. About Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Pete Milligan, Jamie Delano, Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis and many more. About movies, tv, novels, the comics' language and what makes it so unique, and much, more more! #DialogosdeComic #KarenBerger #NoMaleButTheHost #BergerBooks #Vertigo #Sandman #SwampThing #NeilGaiman #AlanMoore #NiUnTioSalvoElpresentador
