Brian Rosenworcel, also known as the Thundergod, is the drummer for rock band Guster. Over the course of Guster's thirty years as an active unit, Brian has gained notoriety for not only his musicianship but his humorous and often quirky online presence as expressed on the band's road and studio journals.    This was actually our second stab at recording. Our first attempt got thwarted by noise, but the good thing is that Brian is such a great conversationalist that it didn't matter that we were performing a do-over on an already recorded podcast. Brian has a lot to share regarding parenting, politics, what it takes to keep a relationship going three decades in, his band's fan base and the qualities he'd like to improve about himself.

Matt Stroup and Steve Alexander (broadcasting from a yacht, sort of) are joined by special/frequent guest Brian Rosenworcel of Guster to look at the top fantasy basketball waiver wire pickups for Week 17. We discuss an impressive run from Raptors rookie Malachi Flynn (and whether it's about to come to and end), notable recent performances from Jalen and Jaden McDaniels, plus the rise of Mo Bamba and the return of Darius Bazley. We also consider names ranging from Daniel Gafford to Aaron Holiday to Isaiah Hartenstein — and coin two new absurd/possibly not absurd fantasy league formats — on this episode.

Things are a lot quieter. The last time I say down with Guster, the full band passed around a mic, seated at a table in the front of the sadly now-defunct Grassroots on St. Marks Place. Percussionist/drummer Brian Rosenworcel came alone this time, and the ambience is little more than an office air conditioner. It’s a welcome change and one that allows us to get to the heart of the group’s nearly 30 years of existence. Out in January, Look Alive is the band’s eight record. As with all of their releases, it finds the quarter exploring new venues for music making, including the debut single, “Overexcited,” which adopts a British accent for a surprising homage to Madness.

Welcome to Influencers! For those of you who listened to the last episode, you know that we have Brian with us. The hints that were given were that Brian considers himself from Brooklyn, although he really isn’t. He became a percussionist after picking up a cheap set of bongos when he was a teenager. He and his band have produced an immense body of music that really stands a test of time. The Incredible Hulk would play him in a movie version of his life. The book that represents his life is Portnoy’s Complaint because it is the defining book of a young Jew. He went to many of the trials and tribulations of becoming a member of a successful band. He has a last name that is so long and so incredibly difficult to pronounce that no other percussionist could compete. Then, the second interview is anonymous. If you can figure out who it is before we reveal it in the following podcast, you could win a coveted invitation to the Influencer Salon.

“All the bull**** of the music industry dying,” Brian Rosenworcel explains, his passion drowning out the din of the packed Manhattan bar, “all the babies, all the egos, nothing really matters except the fact that we’re honing in on a classic pop album.” The babies, incidentally are his own, the drummer’s primary focus in the half-decade since the last Guster record. Maybe it’s the beer speaking, but Rosenworcel sounds damn excited about about Evermotion, convinced that the band’s seventh record just might be its best. It’s the sort of excitement you don’t find in a group approaching its 25th birthday. Perhaps there’s something to be said for taking a good five years between records. Around halfway through, multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds takes a seat at our table — a somewhat fitting later arrival for the band’s most recent addition, having joined Guster in 2010, after the release of their last record, Easy Wonderful. It all adds up to a fascinating peek into the of day to life of band that’s been doing its thing longer than many of its fans have been on this planet.
