Was it a perfect game? Not as much as a 136-124 score might indicate. At one point in the third quarter, the Lakers pushed their lead to 27, creating a potential opportunity for the starters to rest for basically the entire fourth quarter. Instead, Rui Hachimura had to continue his scintillating outside shooting, canning seven(!) threes on the way to 32 points and ten rebounds. LeBron James, in his return after sitting out the Milwaukee win while nursing his problematic ankle, played more minutes than preferable for his triple-double. D'Angelo Russell hit five threes of his own. Jaxson Hayes had 14 points and seven rebounds filling in for Anthony Davis, who got the night off after logging 52 minutes in the double OT win over the Bucks.Again, would have been nice to maintain a 20-plus point cushion. But that's not the same thing as the game ever really being in jeopardy, which it wasn't. All in all, pretty uneventful when it comes to true suspense... in a good way.Brian is still out of town, but Andy was joined by C.J. Toledano, Lakers fanatic and co-host of the new podcast, Point Game, co-hosted with former NBA star John Wall. They discussed the Lakers' winning ways of late, Hachimura's significance as a baller and an Asian athlete, the future of athlete-created content, and much more. Fun show! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky... featuring special guest CJ Toledano (Point Game Podcast, Follow Through) SEGMENT 1: The game was uneventful... and that's a good thing. SEGMENT 2: The importance of Rui Hachimura, on and off the court. SEGMENT 3: C.J. discusses his divided house during the IST, and the future of athlete-created content. Have the Lakers finally, mercifully, found themselves? They seem to think so, at the least. That's what Rui Hachimura was talking about following his career high 36 points, which helped the Lakers to a first half-ending win over the Jazz in Utah. Hachimura, who has bounced back in a big way from his 2-point, 38 minute outing against Denver last week, talked about comfort and continuity and guys feeling good about each other. Certainly the Lakers have a lot to feel good about, as they've won three straight, six of seven and eight of 12 as they head into the break. And this one came without LeBon James, who didn't even make the trip as he got some rest before heading to Indianapolis for the All-Star Game. D'Angelo Russell had a career high 17 assists, Spencer Dinwiddie chipped in with 10/4 in 28 minutes, and overall the Lakers seem to have found a level of comfort in how they operate offensively that has made the game seem fun to them again. How far can they go? Hard to say. This hot streak has helped them gain... well, basically nothing in the standings. But it does show there is potential in this team, a big change from how folks felt about this squad at the beginning of the Grammy trip. Oh, and the Warriors kicked the tires on a LeBron trade. The Lakers opened January with a stretch of 11 games in LA in their first 12, sitting at 17-17 and needing to make some noise. The only noise they made Wednesday against Miami was a sad trombone. Lakers lose 110-96 in a genuinely disgusting performance. Remove Anthony Davis (29/17/6/3/5, as he continues to put up MVP caliber numbers, and Austin Reaves, who at the least was playing hard despite poor outside shooting, and it's hard to find another Laker who distinguished himself. (Christian Wood - 13/8/3 on 5-10 shooting - was decent.) But LeBron James? Horribly inefficient offensively, missing 12 of his 18 shots and not earning a single free throw, to go along with ineffectual defense and some bad TOs. He is reportedly battling illness, but this night it was his on court production that was under the weather. Cam Reddish and Taurean Prince combined for 0 points in 48 minutes. Zero. As a team, the Lakers were 4-30 from 3-point range. They turned the ball over 10 times... in the first quarter (21 overall). Where do they go from here? Maybe things turn if/when players return (no Russell, Hachimura or Vincent on Wednesday). But the level of play goes beyond just missing players. As Davis said after the game, they have to figure it out, sooner rather than later, and if they can't it's going to get ugly fast. Or uglier, at least. The Lakers arrived in New Orleans at 3:30 am Sunday morning, and were missing Cam Reddish (groin) and D'Angelo Russell (bruised tailbone), finishing out a long stretch of road play with tons of back-to-backs. In theory, nothing had to give. And it didn't. The Lakers took one on the chin, losing to the Pelicans 129-109 Sunday night, to limp into the new year at a very mediocre 17-17. Better than last year, but on the other hand the Western Conference is also further ahead of where it was last year, as well. So as 2024 rolls in, the Lakers have a significant challenge in front of them. And it got even harder Sunday, as Rui Hachimura, who had been inserted into the starting lineup by Darvin Ham in what seemed to be more than a temporary move in replacement of Reddish, hurt his calf after eight minutes of play. Ham said the Lakers were definitely concerned, given that Hachimura left and couldn't return. So we'll see how that goes, and what kind of lineup the Lakers would roll out should Hachimura need to miss time. Overall, the Lakers are tired and disorganized. They've got two stars who have been relatively healthy and playing as expected (Anthony Davis, in particular, has been MVP quality), but the supporting cast, for a variety of reasons, hasn't played up to expectations. Performance and injury have made it difficult for Ham to really understand and respond appropriately to get the best mix on the floor, but at the same time, last year Ham seemed more successful making it clear what the team's expectations were, and how they planned to achieve them. Everything outside of the stars needs to improve over the final 48 games. The supporting cast has to elevate. The coaching staff needs to do better. Otherwise, a season that started with so much excitement and promise will go down as a tremendous disappointment. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers get throttled in New Orleans. The Lakers have been struggling a ton since the IST, and needed a palate cleanser. To say the least, Thursday's visitors to the Crypt, the Charlotte Hornets, offered the best opportunity for that if the team could take advantage. And after a slow first half, the Lakers managed to do just that. Lakers win 133-112, in a game that managed to get a little closer in garbage time.Good performances across the board for the Lakers, but perhaps the nicest stat? Anthony Davis and LeBron James didn't have to play a minute in the fourth quarter, and neither guy got close to 30 minutes of work on the night. Meanwhile, Rui Hachimura, D'Angelo Russell, and Austin Reaves all had double digits in the scoring column, and were joined by Jaxson Hayes (granted, in garbage time) and Max Christie (and LeBron and AD, obviously). Christie wasn't a garbage time special, either as both he and Christian Wood re-entered the rotation for a night as Cam Reddish sat with a groin injury.Reddish's injury did, for a night at least, get people talking about something other than the new Lakers starting lineup. Or at the least, slowed it down. Hachimura, btw, started for Reddish. Is it hard to tell what Darvin Ham is doing these days? A little. But for one game, at least, the decisions probably didn't matter all that much, since the Lakers were playing a really bad team on their home floor. Now, all that stands between them and a long home-heavy January stretch are roadies in New Orleans and Minnesota.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers get a badly needed win after a slow start.SEGMENT 2: The Lakers bench dominates.SEGMENT 3: Two more games until a home-heavy January.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. So the Lakers, hopefully with LeBron James in the lineup, once again are in San Antonio to play the Spurs, the back end of a rare road-road series with the same team. Whether James plays or not (and the Lakers will certainly be cautious with him, because he's LeBron and the Spurs have lost 18 games in a row) the big question is whether the Lakers will have learned anything from Wednesday's win.Because Wednesday's win was as annoying as any the Lakers have had in a while. Allowing an 18 point lead to shrink down to 13 with around four minutes left... then 10 with two minutes to play, and then somehow the Lakers needed some real San Antonio incompetence to hold on in the end.Anthony Davis was awesome, but the team's execution suffered in a massive way in those final moments, with mistakes all over the place, whether mental or physical or both. The mark of a good team is to not repeat mistakes.Meanwhile, Lakers fans continue to be annoyed by Darvin Ham's lineup choices. The combinations, the decisions to play one guy over another, all of it. One of the big ones? Rui Hachimura doesn't seem to be able to get as many minutes as some think he should, or as many fans would like. But why? Is it a trust thing? Is there something about his defense? The fit with other lineups? Is Ham trying to maximize his positives while minimize his negatives? On the one hand, figuring out how to do that with role players is a critical job for any coach. Turns out, only Vando returned and we'll all have to wait until Tuesday to see Rob Pelinka's vision as whole as it probably will be for the time being (because Gabe Vincent... we're not talking about him right now...)So with Hachimura, Vanderbilt and Cam Reddish, along with a more-productive-than-anticipated Cam Reddish, plus an increasingly confident Max Christie and a version of Taurean Prince who looks to have repaired his 3-point shot, suddenly Darvin Ham has an almost absurd buffet of wings from which to form a rotation. So whose minutes might get squeezed?Obviously, some of this is matchup dependent, but in the end it could be all the bigs not named Anthony or Davis. But more than that, how Ham puts these guys together will be fascinating to see, and will require some experimentation. Reddish and Vanderbilt would be a problem defensively for the opposition, and create real spacing issues for the Lakers offense. Could Christie serve as a good bridge to help play those guys while still spacing the floor (he's over 45% in his last 5 games from downtown). The team's supporting cast is operating a lot like a natural ecosystem. One part has a tremendous impact on another. Take away the bees, and you have problems eventually with the giraffes. When the Lakers are short on the full range of participants, it limits the capabilities of the guys that are remaining. Pair them in the right symbiotic combinations, though, and the ecosystem can thrive!Fingers crossed guys stay healthy long enough for Ham to learn what he needs to learn.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Vanderbilt returned Saturday. The Locked On Lakers YouTube page is a great place to communicate with other Lakers fans and the hosts of the show, and it was the source of today's discussion.Does the media protect Austin Reaves?More than a few viewers have noted the difference in how he's treated compared to, say, D'Angelo Russell, believing that Reaves doesn't get enough criticism when he underperforms, whether on this show or across the basketball media landscape more broadly. Is that true? Probably, at least to some degree. But what accounts for it? Certainly the Reaves Story (moppy haired, undrafted, relatively unathletic looking white dude from rural Arkansas ascends RAPIDLY to national team status, Taylor Swift rumors and a new contract) contributes. He's an easy guy to root for. Insanely competitive, works hard, etc. But at the same time, does the story (and his skin color) provide more of a shield than it should? What about the sense that he's "found money?" That there's still some residual sense that the good stuff can be accentuated while the bad stuff is brushed off, because someone with his background isn't supposed to provide anything positive at all, really.Meanwhile, Russell, who (as has been noted on this show, repeatedly) has outplayed Reaves significantly this year, gets hammered by fans every time the Lakers lose and/or he turns the ball over. And what about rotations? Does Darvin Ham give Rui Hachimura the minutes he deserves? What might explain an excess of bench time, even while he tends to perform well?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Does Austin Reaves get enough criticism when he doesn't play well?SEGMENT 2: Does the media protect Reaves? The Lakers were down a point with just over two minutes remaining Monday in Miami. And they were down a point when time expired. They had five possessions to try and take the lead, but missed four shots and committed an offensive foul. The result was a 108-107 loss to the Heat. And it was a tale of contrasts, because on the one hand, the Lakers played without Jared Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes (while welcoming Taurean Prince back into the lineup). Anthony Davis left in the third quarter with spasms in his hip, and then D'Angelo Russell was ejected in the second half for arguing calls. So it took a seriously gritty, high-end effort to stay in this one, given how few bodies were available to them down the stretch. On the other, they had a chance to win. Multiple chances, really, and couldn't get a bucket to fall. Add this one to the loss against Sacramento where the Lakers missed a chance to win a game against a good team, on the road.Individually, these don't hurt that much, especially given the context (shorthanded, on the road, good opponent, etc.) but over time piling up too many games you don't win when you could? That can hurt them in the standings, for sure.So the Lakers are now 3-4 heading into Wednesday's game against the Rockets in Houston. They're not sure yet if Davis will play (even though AD said with great confidence after the game that he'd be ready to go), or if Hayes and/or Hachimura will be available (because Vanderbilt and Vincent definitely won't). The Rockets throttled the Kings Monday night at home. They're not a patsy right now.The Lakers will need to play a strong game to avoid going 3-5, heading to Phoenix on Friday. One thing that would have helped them in a big way Monday? Having Russell on the floor might have allowed someone else to take the final shot instead of Cam Reddish. It would have given Darvin Ham another live body on a night he was lacking in them. And at the very least, it's inexcusable for Russell to get himself chucked from the game in that context.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose a frustrating game, though it came with an admirable level of effort.SEGMENT 2: Is Anthony Davis going to miss games with a hip injury?SEGMENT 3: D'Angelo Russell screwed up big time on Monday.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. The Lakers kick off the regular season Tuesday in Denver, and after a strong training camp have very few questions of significance still in need of an answer. Over the weekend, Darvin Ham said that Taurean Prince would start against the Nuggets at small forward. He did leave the door open to a dinged up Jarred Vanderbilt, however, to re-enter the starting lineup once he's recovered from the heel injury that has cost him most of training camp. But while for many teams, "Who is in the starting lineup?" feels like a doozy of an unanswered question, on this squad, less so. The Prince lineups have been great in the preseason. Plenty of early evidence they work well. The Vanderbilt lineups helped the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals last season. Two good options, it seems. Most of the bench questions feel pretty minor. It's easy to see how someone like Gabe Vincent fits in, even while he's missed a lot of time. Hachimura is a clean and comfortable fit coming off the bench. Maybe there are some remaining questions about how much Max Christie is going to play? But overall, that's not a huge one.About the only question that has to do with fit is one with Christian Wood and Jaxson Hayes. Having been given a simple, clear directive on how he's supposed to operate, Hayes had a great camp and probably earned more early minutes than expected. That clear role, that generally doesn't involve him having the ball or plays called for him, seems to be a good fit and helps explain the big energy and positive vibes he's brought on the floor.Wood has had a tougher time. His role is harder to bring along, because he's a scorer who is expected to create and take shots. But from where? What kind? What's the right balance? It's a first world problem, no question, and while the Lakers need to solve it, on the grand scale of BIG ISSUES this one is pretty minor for a contending squad. And there's lots of time for everyone to get it right.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Reflecting on 19 years covering the Lakers, and the positive vibes around this season.SEGMENT 2: Darvin has a starting lineup... for now?SEGMENT 3: Hayes vs. Wood.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!DaveDave is the banking app that's leveling the financial playing field. Every year, ESPN's hoops department ranks the top 100 players in the NBA. Every year, it causes a little bit of controversy, because people tend to get really worked up about rankings and lists. But while they're certainly arguable and definitely easy to overrate (does it really matter if someone is the 7th best player or the 9th, the 58th or the 62nd?) lists like these can be instructive.Particularly in trying to figure out roster depth around the league, and how different teams compare to each other. So how do the Lakers stack up?Well, they're the only team with two players in the top 10 - Anthony Davis (10) and LeBron James (9). Austin Reaves comes in at 66. And that's it. Many teams have more guys in the top 100 (Denver has four, the Knicks, surprisingly, have five). But when you start to peel back more layers, it's pretty clear the Lakers have a high end roster with a ton of depth. How many players who are average or above (don't poo poo average - half the league is below it) do the Lakers have in their rotation? Well, all of them. James, Davis, Hachimura, Russell, Reaves, Vincent, Wood, Prince, Vanderbilt and, if things progress, Max Christie as well. But they're at least nine deep with average or above or well above. If that's your roster, your roster is good.Speaking of Russell, after Wednesday's win in Anaheim, he talked about his defense and acknowledged that it's a big part of the reason he was taken off the floor in the postseason, especially against Denver. (His horrendous shooting didn't help, either.) He knows that has to get better if he wants not only to be a four-quarter contributor in the playoffs for the Lakers this year, but also to re-establish his value across the league. Finally, The Athletic's John Hollinger put out a column this week highlighting players on good teams who could play important roles, but are relatively unknown to most basketball fans. On that list? Christie. When we look back on that column in the spring, how likely is it that he'll be correct?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: NBA Rank - LeBron 9, AD 10 and Reaves 66.SEGMENT 2: How LA's depth stacks up.SEGMENT 3: Is Christie a legitimate breakout candidate?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Jase MedicalGet $20 off these lifesaving antibiotics with Jase Medical by using code LOCKEDON at checkout on jasemedical.com.GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONNBA for $20 off your first purchase.FanDuelThis episode is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook, Official Sportsbook of Locked On. The Lakers got some strong frontline performances in their preseason opener Saturday against the Warriors, as D'Angelo Russell and Anthony Davis put up big numbers in short minutes. But two of the big headliners weren't in the lineup. Monday in Vegas against the Nets, LeBron James and Austin Reaves suited up for the first time this season... and looked pretty good, too!LeBron looked like he had found the bounce that had been stripped during the playoffs thanks to that foot tendon issue, going for 10/3/5 in 17 minutes. Reaves hit his first shot of the night (a triple) en route to 18 points on 5-7 shooting and 4-6 from 3. All told, the Lakers starters (which included Taurean Prince on a night where Jarred Vanderbilt was unavailable thanks to a heel injury) were a robust 13-23 from downtown. The shooting, which was good on Saturday, continued. And it was an argument for why Prince would be a good choice for that fifth starter role. He would provide low-usage floor spacing, while still bringing the same on-court hustle and energy of Vanderbilt, though not quite as much defensive versatility and definitely not as much rebounding. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, provides that rebounding and extremely high levels of energy and effort... but unless that corner 3 becomes a true weapon, can create some congestion offensively.Interestingly, Hachimura's 19 points on 8-14 from the floor was a good argument for him not starting. It was clear last year, and seems pretty clear again that given the offensive talent in the starting lineup, he'll have far more opportunities to assert himself as a scorer coming off the bench. And it's not like he can't come in as a sixth man, and then finish games, too. There's no rule against that sort of thing. So what about the other guys? Maxwell Lewis is very raw, but man does that kid have some athleticism. He showed it off in the second half on Monday. Jalen Hood-Schifino is obviously a work in progress, but showed more of what the Lakers see in him as a point guard, not just through five assists, but also the variety of passes he's obviously comfortable making. Christian Wood... did he bounce back from a disappointing preseason opener? Integrating him in ways that maximize his skills without over-catering might take a minute. Did Jaxson Hayes follow up a promising debut with a good second game? LeBron James noted Thursday that he won't be playing in the preseason opener on Saturday in San Francisco, but he does plan to play in about half of LA's six games before the real ones start later this month. That's a pretty decent amount of run, but is it enough? What is too much? The Lakers have, in the past, gone extremely conservative with preseason playing time for stars. We remember a couple years back when James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook didn't get any time together in dress rehearsals before the regular season, and the results showed. On the other hand, LeBron is officially the oldest player in the NBA, and there is no diminishing AD's injury history. And the Lakers do have some continuity, which matters. On the other hand, there are still a lot of questions about the rotation that need to be addressed, and more importantly, the Lakers have a very difficult, road-heavy schedule to open the season. IT's important not to fall into a hole early while you figure things out. Not in a Western Conference expected to be as competitive as this one. Ideally, the Lakers want to be calibrating for the playoffs comfortable with a top 4 seed in March and April, not scrambling like they had to last year. A strong start goes a long way to giving them some cushion.Meanwhile, much attention has been paid to Rui Hachimura and the amount of time he's spent around LeBron this summer, to the point of going with him on road trips, reportedly. LeBron calls him The Understudy. Hachimura says he wants to improve his finishing at the rim, and that he loves the big moments (certainly last year's playoffs showed that to be true). Obviously Rui has some stuff to prove, but there's no question moving to the Lakers, playing with LeBron, and having a better defined role and set of expectations has done him good. That kind of swagger and confidence can make a world of difference. Finally, Max Christie looks ready to take a role in the rotation where he gives the Lakers quality minutes. Not graded on a curve for a second year player, or a guy who isn't even 21 yet. Just good minutes. If that's the case, it's like the Lakers acquired one more free agent, even if he was on the team last year.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: LeBron says he won't play Saturday. How much should he play in the preseason?SEGMENT 2: The Lakers have a brutal early season schedule. How important is a good start? Plus, Hachimura!SEGMENT 3: More Rui, plus Max Christie.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!IbottaIbotta gives you cash back on hundreds of grocery items from produce to personal care to pantry goods, so you can make sure you're beating inflation no matter what you're purchasing!
