In this episode of Marrow Masters, we talk with Adam Claxton, a British acute myeloid leukemia (AML) survivor who was diagnosed in 2024 and received a transplant in December 2024. He shares what early survivorship really feels like, especially the part no one prepares you for. Once treatment slows down, there is a gap between being a patient and figuring out who you are in the world again. Adam explains that around the 100 day mark, he felt dropped out of the system and forced to ask where he fit, what had changed, and who he was becoming after transplant. We also discuss graft versus host disease (GVHD) and how Adam reframes it. He calls it the price he pays for leukemic protection. That shift in perspective helps him see chronic GVHD not only as a complication, but also as evidence that the donor cells are doing their job. He is honest that it can be difficult physically and mentally, but he chooses to view it as part of survival and a sign that his body is being protected. A major focus of the conversation is mindset. Adam talks about mindset as something we have to work on daily, just like updating a device. He believes our thoughts shape how we feel, behave, and respond, and that mental habits matter just as much as physical recovery. He also opens up about relapse, calling it an even harder battle than the initial diagnosis. What helps him move through it is staying connected to his reasons for going on, including his family, his purpose, and his desire to help more people with his voice and experience. The episode also looks at faith over fear. Adam says both fear and faith still take you through the day, so he would rather choose the path that gives him hope. That same thinking connects to what he calls the reset after transplant. He realized he could not simply return to the same life, work, and identity he had before cancer. His priorities had changed, and so had his sense of purpose. Instead of trying to recover the old version of himself, he began building a new one. On a practical level, Adam shares advice about routines, mindfulness, exercise, social media boundaries, and finding joy again in simple things. One of his best suggestions is to go back to the things you loved doing around age 12, because those activities often reconnect you with peace, play, and presence. He also speaks warmly about the importance of support, especially from his wife and children, while reminding us that caregivers carry their own emotional burden too. By the end, Adam leaves listeners with a clear message. Survivors need to be kinder to themselves, own their stories, and start sharing what they have learned. Dana Claxton is a critically acclaimed artist working in film, video, photography, and performance art. Her practice investigates Indigenous beauty, the body, the sociopolitical, and the spiritual. Dana Claxton is a professor and head of the Department of Art, History, Visual Arts and Theory at the University of British Columbia. She is a member of Wood Mountain Lakota First Nation located in southwest Saskatchewan and she resides in Vancouver, Canada. Dana comments: “I am grateful for all of the support my artwork and cultural work has received. I am indebted to the sun and my Sundance teachings. Mni Ki Wakan. Water is sacred.” This photograph is one of a series of artworks made in the years 2018 through 2019, highlighting the beauty and resilience of Indigenous women through their personal effects. The photograph measures 60 by 40 inches and is printed on colour transparency. It is mounted on an LED light box, giving it an ethereal effect to the image. The image includes a three quarter length portrait of an Indigenous woman standing facing the viewer, including her head, shoulders and hands that rest beside her thighs. Her features are obscured by her cultural belongings, including jewelry bags, hats and ceremonial objects. The portrait is set against a blank background in a light-tone gray. The image and the subject are brightly lit with studio lighting that enhances the richness and vibrancy of colour. In this portrait, the subject is wearing gifted items, suggesting the extent to which identity is shaped by her community and kinship. Starting at the top of the subject's head, she is wearing two pristine black ball caps. One of the ball caps faces left and the other faces to the right. It is tilted down just enough to reveal the elaborate beadwork adorning the brim. Beneath the ball caps is a hand woven Coast Salish cedar hat resting directly on the subjects head. From inside the hat is a thick curtain of beaded necklaces of different colours, sizes, shapes, covering the subject's face and draping down past her shoulders. Natural and handcrafted turquoise beads, glass beads, and animal claws are prominent in the necklaces. The beads give way to ceremonial peyote fans belonging to the subject's husband. Each fan contains a mix of brightly coloured feathers, sacred bird feathers, leather and beads. The fans extend from below her shoulders to her fingertips, her forearms, framing the feathers on either side. On each forearm, the subject wears intricately beaded cuffs that depict roses and hearts that are red and gold in colour. On her left hand she's wearing a diamond wedding ring. This artwork acts as both a signifier for Indigenous cultural abundance and as a reminder that Indigenous women have long been cultural carriers. This is in contrast to how they are often represented in museums and galleries: as anonymous makers of cultural objects that have been displaced from their original context and displayed for settler consumption. Claxton's work celebrates and acknowledges that Indigenous art and expression evolves and changes just like any other. It is not co-signed to pre-contact aesthetics. The stark, minimalist background is meant to highlight the exuberance and quality of this beadwork and signal the necessity of including Indigenous women within contemporary photographic portraiture more broadly.

Chance Claxton is a serial entrepreneur, a brand builder. Her most recent works involves  axial flux motors, known as pancake motors. They are lighter weight, lower cost, and highly efficient electric motors. Her company, Orbis Elecric, has been working with the VW Group and other automotive OEMs to put these motors inside wheels. They can be positioned in two rear wheels or in all four wheels for high torque and high horsepower applications.Orbis is working in several verticals: The motors are also being employed in the refrigeration systems in refrigerated trucks, driving down costs and boosting efficiency. Recently, Orbis Electric has promoted its motors for cooling systems in AI data centers. Chance explains that this is a booming market, there are lots of eyes it. Thus there is great interest and fundraising capabilities in deploying this type of innovation and efficiency in that energy-intensve vertical.Ted delves into Chance's diverse career, unearthing lessons learned in her path of entrepreneurialism. She began with a company designed to make Italian lines of furniture easily accessible, a company aptly called Design Within Reach.They developed an online catalog and then managed manufacturers in Italy to deliver the products.For 13 years, Chance was at the helm of U Konserve. That company was and still is about packaging to avoid food waste. With kids in school, she thought there must be a better solution than disposable ziplock bags. This career aligned with her sustainability values. U Konserve known  for reusable containers and food wraps. It ultimately sold to a bigger company, teaching her about scaling up, and knowing when to step aside. It's all about timing she said more than once.Another job taught her when to throw in the towel. With a business partner/inventor, she decided to make the ultimate mask to protect from Covid. They were manufactured it in China. She was just about to release just as the requirements for masks in America were lifted! She called that venture a swing and a miss... all back to timing. Remarkably, she and that inventor went on to develop automotive breaks. Orbis Brakes has the goal of disrupting the $30 billion brake industry. Orbis makes an inside-out form of disc brake, a ring with lots of ventilation. The motor fits right inside; the wheel encompasses the whole system. Chance explains how the brakes not only cut material costs, but also reduce nano-particulate pollution.Orbis Electric is focused on the motors and how to commercialize them. She describes the two test vehicles supplied b by Volkswagen to prototype the in-wheel motor system, one being an ID4 modified in California and then extensively track tested. Her company is working to develop alternative magnet materials, decreasing costs while increasing the sustainability of products. Chance discusses raising capital, a big piece of the equation. It's not easy being a self-funded company, constantly working to balance opportunities and resources. Thus the current data center focus. You have to go where the money is... matching that with areas of huge potential. She describes how one-third of world's electricity is wasted by inefficient motors and their operation. Many are not "smart motors," they are running all the time even when not needed.The conversation ends with more advice and reflection: Timing, staying in lane, defining your path, sticking with it, and radically shifting if need be. She discusses passion, a key ingredient in being resilient, so critical for entrepreneurial paths... perhaps more important than eduction and specialization. And passion need not be singular... it can be applied in lots of different ways at different times. You can't know it all, she implores, but there's so much you can learn by rolling up your sleeves.

Freddy was actually the the original target of law enforcement before Jeffrey Deskovic ultimately wound up being wrongfully convicted.
