Devin Booker has ascended into a perennial NBA Allstar at the SG position. But is he the best SG in the NBA? Chapin, Brandon and Fonz of Here Come the Suns explore and debate. Next we predict totals for wins, playoff success, Allstars, and individual accolades for the Phoenix Suns this season. After that, we'll rate the Nets chances to offload Kyrie for a meaningful piece, Ben Simmons finally showing up to camp, and who has a better shot, Brooklyn without Kyrie, or the eastern conference field. In a new segment, we will tell you what Frank Vogel and Steve Kerr really mean by their recent quotes about the Westbrook and Lebron pairing, as well as decode Deandre Ayton's recent quote about being disappointed. We then gripe about what we are sick and tired of. Finally, find out during the Basketball IQ trivia challenge if Chapin must complete 6 straight freethrows on camera. Coach Jerome Gumbs is a former collegiate and professional basketball player and the founder of Empower Me Academy (www.empowermeacademy.net). Founded in 2013, Empower ME Academy provides a holistic training experience. Student-Athletes develop better basketball skills — and in addition, improve their attitude, commitment, and discipline. The goal is for their Student-Athletes to become well-rounded leaders and adults, successful on the court and in life. As Coach Gumbs like to say, 'Everything we do, we do with excellence." Many organizations pay lip service to providing a truly transformational sports experience, but as you listen to this you will see that Coach Gumbs and his staff deliver to the kids of San Francisco, and hope to spread this type of programming far and wide. They are truly about mentorship, coaching with heart, and developing not only better basketball players, but better people. In our episode this week Jerry and John discuss with Coach Gumbs his life journey, the coaches and experiences who have shaped him, why he started Empower Me Academy, and why this needs to be the future of sports.  Connect with him at www.EmpowerMeAcademy.net Check out this amazing documentary about his work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pee7l-k1P_E Do you want to access all of our videos from the 2021 Way of Champions Conference? Ben Sherwood, founder and CEO of MOJO, and has coached his sons for the last 12 years in four sports. During that time, he also served as president of the Disney ABC Television Group and president of ABC News. Like many recreational coaches, he noticed that there were few if any resources to help the busy parent coach as he or she travelled from work to the practice field. So, he founded MOJO (@yougotmojo). Today we speak about the founding of the company, the need to help our recreational coaches more so than our top level coaches, and how we can make sports for children age 4-14 better.  MOJO is on a mission to make youth sports more fun and magical for everyone – one kid, one coach, one family at a time. Launched in February 2021, MOJO is a robust digital platform that empowers parents who coach youth sports to bring world-class training to the largest pool of players in the world – kids aged 13 and under. Winner of the Webby Award for Best Sports App of 2021, MOJO believes that youth sports has the power to transform lives, not just for the kids on the field but the coaches and parents on the sidelines. MOJO is committed to equity, inclusion and helping to level the playing field for kids everywhere. #232 Wes Brown: Manchester United's 2x Champions League and 5x EPL Winner on his Journey from Pickup Games to the Pros

Way of Champions Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2021 54:57

When we talk about being a champion, not too many people in professional sport can claim to understand what it takes to get to the top of the game like Wes Brown. Brown loved taekwondo and playing pickup games in the park as a kid, and didn't join his first soccer team until the age of 10. But from there he blossomed, joining Manchester United at age 12, turning pro at age 16, and eventually winning 2 Champions League titles (1999, 2008) 5 English Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and making the PFA team of the year in 2000-2001. He eventually played over 300 EPL games for Manchester United and Sunderland before finishing his career with a stint with Blackburn and in India.  In our discussion today, Wes talks about the influence of role models in close proximity (we spoke about this with Rasmus Ankersen a few weeks back), as players such as Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Davis Beckham, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo all influenced his journey as a player. We speak about playing with Ronaldo, and marking Lionel Messi. We touch on his boyhood sport experiences, as well as the massive impact legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson had on him and so many players. Finally, we talk about pressure and Simone Biles, and get Wes's take on the inner game and what it takes to perform in front of millions, even billions of people, on the world's biggest sporting stage.   Way of Champions Conference 2021 This weeks podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Leadership Conference, August 21-22, being held virtually this year. Registration closed August 1, but you can email John at Changing The Game Project in case we have a late opening. I'm very pleased to welcome Caitlin Shea and Greg Hassall - co-producers of Australian Story's two-part feature on Luc Longley - ‘One Giant Leap'. Personally, this podcast episode is extra special. Luc contacted me in June to ask if I'd be interested in doing research for the project. When Luc Longley calls, you don't need to be asked twice. I offered some historical context and pointed Greg towards particular video footage of Luc's career. A minor role, however, I'm extremely thankful to Luc, Caitlin and Greg for trusting my judgement.[Enjoy Adam's podcast? The pair talk about their experiences meeting Luc and the interview process with Longley's family and friends. You'll learn how interviews with US-based guests such as Scottie Pippen, Coach Phil Jackson and Steve Kerr were conducted. Of course, we examine how Caitlin and Greg managed to secure the involvement of Michael Jeffrey Jordan. They chat about how it felt to speak with one of the world's most-recognisable names and the unique relationship between Luc and Jordan whilst teammates on the Chicago Bulls. When Jerry first told me about this book about a year ago I was so curious about the title and how he would weave the principles of Buddhism with leadership, culture building and competitive sport. He did it ever so well, so good in fact that Steve Kerr signed on to write the forward.  In our chat today, we discuss the origin of the title, the Mamba Mentality and Buddhism, selflessness, servant leadership, mastery, and so much more. You all know Jerry always brings the high energy and amazing insight, and our chat this week does not disappoint. Rasmus Ankersen (@RasmusAnkersen) is an internationally known author, speaker, and film producer and one of the worlds leading experts on talent identification and development. He is also the co-director of football for Brentford FC of the English Premier League and Chairman of Champions League club FC Midtjylland of the Danish Super League. His 2012 book The Goldmine Effect is an incredible read and was one of the books that inspired me at the beginning of my Changing the Game Project journey, so to say that I am thrilled to have Rasmus on is an understatement.  His new project is a film called "The Hockey Miracle in the Middle of Nowhere," the true story of how the small town of Herning, Denmark (pop. 50,000) sent five players to the NHL in a ten year period. No Danish player had ever made the NHL before! In that same period, the US cities of Chicago and Detroit, hockey hotbeds, each sent less than 5 players to the top of the ice hockey world. How did they do it? In our talk today, Rasmus and I break down the major principles outlined in the film and speak about how you might apply these same ideas in your own community so you don't just ID the talent that shouts, but you can identify and patiently develop the talent that whispers! Please connect with Rasmus at www.RasmusAnkersen.com and grab yourself a copy of The Goldmine Effect. On today's episode, Jason and Producer Rob G kick things off with a quick defense of LeBron James' new movie - 'Space Jam: A New Legacy'. Is it a great movie? No, but it wasn't supposed to be. Is it surprising that the critics mostly hated it? No, but it wasn't made for them. The target demographic seems to love it, and that's all that matters in situations like this. Later, the guys share their thoughts on Damian Lillard's future following Henry Abbott's report on Friday that Dame would be requesting a trade in the coming days. Lillard tried to shoot down the report the best he could... only to go ahead and explain all the reasons why he would request a trade if he decided to. You can't blame Lillard for wanting out, and you can't hold his past comments about loyalty against him. Only a fool would keep the same opinion without bothering to consider new information. With Draymond Green and Steve Kerr heading over to Tokyo with Lillard and the rest of Team USA in the coming days, don't be surprised to see Dame connected to the Golden State Warriors when they all return. Finally, Jason and Rob G close the show with a full breakdown of the NBA Finals. The last 3 Phoenix Suns losses have been an indictment of Chris Paul. Period. Devin Booker has been sensational for most of the series, but with CP3 looking more and more like a 36-year-old point guard, it's hard to imagine Phoenix coming back in this one. What's more, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday are all peaking at the right time for the Milwaukee Bucks. This series just feels over.
