Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine get together as the buzzer goes off to talk about everything that's happened in the last 48 hours before the NBA trade deadline.00:00 - Hello friends!02:35 - Jake's take on a quiet deadline04:15 - Boston Celtics07:33 - Minnesota Timberwolves09:55 - Utah Jazz / Toronto Raptors16:20 - 76ers / Pacers / Bucks28:35 - Dallas Mavericks31:25 - Suns / Nets / Hornets33:10 - New York KnicksOn this very special episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine get together as the buzzer goes off to talk about everything that's happened in the last 48 hours before the NBA trade deadline. It was a tame deadline, there were no superstars dealt this week, and Jake has a theory that the new CBA is to blame. It restricts what some of the contenders can do, and that showed with how many deals were made just to get teams off of that second apron. The guys explain why Xavier Tillman (to the Celtics) and Monte Morris (to the Timberwolves) are great depth pieces, even if the fans of both of those teams maybe were hoping to get something bigger and more exciting. The Jazz finally revealed themselves to be sellers, and not buyers, by dealing away Simone Fontecchio and Kelly Olynyk, but the Toronto Raptors confused everyone by trading for Olynyk, keeping bruce Brown, and waiving Spencer Dinwiddie after trading Dennis Schröder to get him.The Pacers made some interesting moves, sending Buddy Hield to the 76ers and then immediately replacing him with Doug McDermott. Dan explains why that fits their roster better and Jake says their front office has quickly turned into one of the NBA's smartest. The 76ers seem ready to pair Buddy Field with Kyle Lowry on the buyout market, but they'll still have to survive the next month with Mo Bamba and Paul Reed in place of the injured Joel Embiid.Jake says the Bucks were inquiring all over the league to get some perimeter defense added to their roster, but Patrick Beverley wasn't a name that he was expecting to hear headed to Milwaukee. He improves their perimeter defense, but does he offer anything else? The Dallas Mavericks made two big deals, picking up center Daniel Gafford from the Wizards and power forward P.J. Washington from the Hornets. Jake would've preferred for them to get a big wing instead, like Andrew Wiggins, and says this doesn't make them competitive with the top teams in the West. The Suns picked up Royce O'Neale from the Brooklyn Nets, after Miles Bridges decided to stay with the Charlotte Hornets, and Gordon Hayward found a perfect destination in the Oklahoma City Thunder. We finish the show with a conversation around the New York Knicks, who swung a deal to get Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks from the Detroit Pistons. The Knicks are dealing with a lot of injuries right now, so both guys will immediately help the team and will probably be in the starting lineup. However, when the Knicks get everyone healthy, this might be the most talented team they've had in 20 years.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The overwhelming consensus this offseason among pundits, fans, and seemingly LeBron James, was that the Lakers did quite well for themselves in free agency. At worst, they maintained a nice status quo. At best, they even improved. But was there perhaps a better route that could have been pursued, with more big picture flexibility? Anthony Irwin, host of the Lakers Lounge Podcast and Substack author, thinks so. In Irwin's opinion, the Lakers could have set themselves up better with an approach that meant going into the luxury tax, losing full mid-level exception (and by extension, access to Gabe Vincent), and keeping Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba on the roster as expiring contracts for a potential in-season mega-deal.The pros and cons of each route, and whether economic concerns played too big a role, gets a deep dive examination. All that, plus thoughts on whether Lonnie Walker IV will be missed, Max Christie's readiness to enter the rotation, and if Saudi Arabia's brash, big money entry into sports could eventually disrupt the NBA as we know it.Host: Andy Kamenetzky, with Guest Anthony Irwin.Segment 1: Did the Lakers take the best possible path this offseason?Segment 2: Did money dictate the Lakers' decisions? The Lakers lost again Wednesday, meaning they'll leave Sacramento and the California Classic without a victory. But that doesn't really matter, because it's Summer League, after all. What does? How the Important Players look. First and foremost, Max Christie. For second year players, the expectation is they should perform at a higher level than most of the players on the floor. Playing great doesn't always mean great things are coming, but poor play is a definite red flag. Christie looked excellent Monday in the team's SPL debut, and on Wednesday picked up right where he left off. 25 points, four rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. He made four of his five 3-point attempts, and shot eight free throws. Once again, Christie was the team's best player, and that's good!So how long before you feel confident he can play a role in the regular season?Meanwhile, how did Jalen Hood-Schifino look in his second game? Colin Castleton? What about Cole Swider? Evaluating players in SPL can be tricky. A lot depends on what exactly it is you think is important. In other news, the Lakers lost a potential free agent to back up Anthony Davis on Wednesday, as Mo Bamba signed with Philly to back up Joel Embiid, instead. He was one of the more prominent names that fans hoped might get signed. And in a thin free agent market, there aren't that many options remaining before folks could get pretty nervous. Finally, the Lakers are operating without any real drama, even while plenty of it swirls around the league, as James Harden and Damian Lillard are both on the market. Once again, Christie was the team's best player, and that's good! So how long before you feel confident he can play a role in the regular season? Meanwhile, how did Jalen Hood-Schifino look in his second game? Normally, that kind of thing worms its way into the LA conversation, even if there's no real chance Star X could land with the Lakers. This year? Nope. The Lakers have some decisions to make before the roster is finalized. The most prominent is around the 14th roster spot, widely expected to go to another center. Or at the least, a really big power forward who can absorb minutes at the five. With Anthony Davis's health a priority, and a spotty injury history, reliable backups are critical. Right now, the Lakers only have free agent signee Jaxson Hayes, who disappointed in a big way over four years in New Orleans, and two-way signee Colin Castleton, a rookie out of Florida. Not exactly the most comforting options for a team that figures to lean on its backup center fairly significantly throughout the year.So who do they go get?The names aren't super exciting, and all options have serious flaws (which is to be expected, given the Lakers can only offer a minimum deal). Player movement on Day 1 of NBA free agency wasn't as rapid fire as last offseason, but it was nonetheless pretty busy, and the Lakers were very active, moving quickly to leverage both exceptions available to them. The rundown of activity: Signed forward Taurean Prince to a one year deal worth a reported $4.5 million, likely the team's biannual exception. Signed Miami guard Gabe Vincent to a 3 year, $33 million deal, with the team's full midlevel exception - the one opened up when they declined their option on Malik Beasley, and released Mo Bamba. Signed forward Cam Reddish to a two-year deal at the veteran's minimum. This, like Thanos, was inevitable. Can the Lakers actually help him meet his potential? Re-signed forward Rui Hachimura to a three year deal at $17 million per, a nice payout for Hachimura. A little higher perhaps than the Lakers hoped, but still low enough that... ...the Lakers still have enough to re-sign Austin Reaves and D'Angelo Russell (assuming he doesn't get something way above what market price looks like it'll be). The Lakers will then fill the rest of the roster out with minimum, or near minimum deals, depending on the exact number Russell (presumably) agrees to in his return. That's the plan, at least. Whether the rest of the league cooperates it's hard to say. After all the movement on Friday, there are fewer teams with cap space to make Russell an offer above the full midlevel. And how many of those teams would go there?Bruce Brown, a major target of the Lakers, went to Indiana for more than the Lakers could offer. Dennis Schröder is heading to Toronto on a two year deal, again for more than the Lakers could offer. So did the Lakers do well on Day 1? A lot will depend on what happens with Russell, but overall signs are promising. Prince, while flawed, will provide a presence they didn't necessarily have last year, and Vincent is a nice replacement for Schröder. Reddish is a flier worth taking. They had to bring Hachimura back, and did.So a good start!HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. Wednesday, speculation that the Lakers had their eye on a full midlevel exception worth over $12 million a season, rather than the smaller taxpayer version (a little over $5) began to ramp up. And with decisions to make on Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba, we'd all learn pretty quickly what direction the Lakers would be taking.Thursday, we got our answers. The Lakers declined a team option on Beasley, then released Bamba (along with Shaq Harrison) to give themselves a chance to use that larger exception. The big target? Likely Denver's Bruce Brown, and Thursday The Athletic's Jovan Buha reported the Lakers feel like they have a good shot at signing the versatile, hard-nosed guard.Granted, they'll have a lot of competition, because basically every team in the league would love to have him.So should fans print their Brown jerseys? Is Milwaukee center Brook Lopez, mentioned as another player the Lakers would want, even a small possibility? Because he'd be a perfect fit next to Anthony Davis. But if it's not those guys, who else would be worth that kind of money? Did the Lakers take a big risk in letting someone like Bamba, who definitely fills a potential need at backup C that the Lakers will need to fill (and the market is slim, to say the least)? Does it make sense to chop up that big exception into smaller parts? How many dudes could the Lakers bring in, if the market breaks their way?The whole thing begins at 3 pm Pacific time. That's when teams can start signing players, and things tend to get wild and wooly very, very fast. The Lakers might not be at the front of the line, and someone like Brown (reportedly set to visit the Mavericks, among other teams) will likely take his time.Stay tuned!HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers make moves to open up the use of a full midlevel exception.SEGMENT 2: If not Bruce Brown, then who?SEGMENT 3: More names the Lakers could target with all of, or part of, their newfound access to contract options.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. On Tuesday, introducing the team's two draft picks to the local media, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka reiterated the idea the team enters this offseason valuing continuity. They want to keep this core group together, and build on what was accomplished following the trade deadline last season.Of course, continuity can mean a lot of different things, as can core. Some guys are more core than others, right? So who might get left out if the Lakers decide to run it back... mostly? And if they go that direction, do they have a path to better players?Well, on Wednesday reports indicated the Lakers would be very, very interested in Denver's Bruce Brown, were they to free up use of their non-taxpayer midlevel exception, worth a little over $12 million. They'd have plenty of competition, and even getting to a place where an offer could be made would mean parting ways with Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba, and perhaps more. And it would also require a very astute reading of the free agent market, because using that exception would hard cap the Lakers and they'd need to squeeze a lot of folks in with the money available (Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, D'Angelo Russell being the most important). It would limit their flexibility, potentially... but it would also open up an avenue to maximize the talent that could be had on the free agent market. It's a tough choice for Rob Pelinka... unless he has a good feel for what's coming this summer. And certainly early signs are that the market for Russell and even Hachimura might not be as robust as initially thought as the season was winding down. There's a world in which the Lakers keep everyone that matters, even potentially Dennis Schröder, and still manage to improve the team. There's also a path where they swing and miss and find themselves short on valuable supporting pieces.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers value continuity... meaning what, exactly?SEGMENT 2: Could the Lakers make a run at Bruce Brown?SEGMENT 3: Is it worth the attempt to get a guy like Brown? Because after him, there aren't a lot of realistic upgrades, and they could be left holding the bag having sacrificed depth and flexibility.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. There's also a path where they swing and miss and find themselves short on valuable supporting pieces. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers value continuity... meaning what, exactly? SEGMENT 2: Could the Lakers make a run at Bruce Brown? SEGMENT 3: Is it worth the attempt to get a guy like Brown? Because after him, there aren't a lot of realistic upgrades, and they could be left holding the bag having sacrificed depth and flexibility. NBA free agency kicks off Friday at 3 pm PT, and while the Lakers aren't likely to be first out of the gate—that tends to be the teams with real dollars to spend—they'll most certainly be paying close attention to where the first wave of players land, and who might be left over.A big (or bigger than the Lakers can make, at least) offer to someone like Dennis Schröder could change the landscape a little, too, because it might mean the taxpayer mid-level exception people expect the Lakers to use (and currently, in theory, earmarked for Schröder) would go somewhere else. It's a thin year for free agents, so who is out there that might make sense? And what about Jalen Hood-Schifino? The Draft is done, and now the NBA is getting ready for the rush of free agency. In a twist on the normal run of things, the Lakers really aren't a big part of the rumor mill. The reasons are fairly obvious: They lack cap space, and to create any, it would require the Lakers to clear the decks of too many important players. Way too many. Meanwhile, the types of guys they can afford aren't the shiny names that get attention at this point of the process. But logic and reality has never been a big part of determining whether people talk about the Lakers and free agent action.Instead, the focus really is much more on the market for their own free agents, and whether the Lakers will make a real effort to run it back. That starts with D'Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura. And the market for Hachimura might have taken shape over the weekend, when Minnesota's Naz Reid signed an extension with the Wolves for about $14 million a season. And while some Lakers fans had pipe dreams of somehow getting Reid to LA - that was never going to happen - that the Wolves got him for just above the full midlevel is a good sign for the Lakers. At first look, it's hard to see how many teams will go much higher than that for Hachimura. The teams with cap space (Houston, for example) don't benefit using it on Rui. Really good teams that might have a defined role for him don't have the money. So maybe the Lakers keep him for something like that $14 mil, which is a few mil less than what the top end could be, and given all the tax math the Lakers are doing, that could be a big deal. They also have a choice to make on Mo Bamba, who would get a little more appealing on the open market with Reid gone as an option. Should the Lakers decline his $10 million option for next year, would they be able to lure him back on a smaller deal? If they let him go, who could replace him? It's a pickle! Bamba may not be perfect, but he's very likely better than who the Lakers could get on a minimum deal, and to use their exception to fill a hole they created would be painful.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers aren't a big part of the discourse as free agency talk heats up.SEGMENT 2: Did Naz Reid set the market for Rui Hachimura?SEGMENT 3: To Bamba or not to Bamba? The Lakers head into free agency with restricted free agents they would like to retain, unrestricted free agents who were key contributors and could be back, and players with contract options for next season that need resolving before July 1st. Whether it's Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, D'Angelo Russell, Mo Bamba and Malik Beasley, or Lonnie Walker IV and Dennis Schröder, Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss the many different decisions the Lakers have in front of them for free agency and how the salary cap and spending will impact those choices. In August, the Lakers can give Anthony Davis a three-year extension worth $167 million. The decision of whether to give it to him, or risk him potentially opting out of his deal after next season and walking as a free agent, is a tricky one. On the one hand, the Lakers will be hard pressed to find a player better than him, even while factoring in additional age and mileage. Frustrating as he occasionally is, Davis is still in the NBA's elite tier, and those guys are really, really hard to find. On the other hand, paying Davis over $55 million a year, pushing that past a realistic timeline for LeBron James, would make any GM nervous.Would it be better for the Lakers to end the Davis Era at the same time the LeBron Era closes? There's risk everywhere, no question. So what's the right play, here?Meanwhile, Austin Reaves has officially made it. The internet has been hopping with Reaves-is-dating-Taylor Swift content this week. Is it true? No, it is not. On the one hand, the Lakers entered the final minute with a real chance to win in three of the four games they lost in the Western Conference Finals to the Denver Nuggets. On the other... they lost all of them. And while you could argue it means the gap between Denver and LA isn't as big as 4-0 might indicate, there's still definitely a gap.How big?The NBA Finals, which kicked off Thursday, might provide a clue. Both to how the Lakers stack up against the Nuggets, but where they might fit in that next tier of contenders, and how crowded that group might be.One thing that will help close the gap next year? Internal improvement. Assuming the Lakers bring back the expected group of players, a lot of attention will be given to the relative youth of the supporting cast. Generally, young players are talked about as having "upside." Often, teams have a couple prospects that they hope will become franchise cornerstones, and even elite NBA players. The Lakers don't have that level of prospect, but how much better can Austin Reaves get? How about Rui Hachimura? What about Max Christie? For the Lakers, if a guy like Christie can become a reliable, game in/game out rotation player for the regular season next year - even for 10-15 minutes a night - that's like acquiring an extra free agent, or pulling off a trade. The Lakers will certainly look to get better by dangling players like Mo Bamba, Malik Beasley and D'Angelo Russell (in sign-and-trade scenarios). How appealing will those options be, though? So while they've remade their depth, getting significantly better could be tough. Unless, of course, that improvement happens internally.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: What could the Finals teach us about the Lakers?SEGMENT 2: Which young player on the Lakers has the most upside?SEGMENT 3: Why internal improvement could be tremendously valuable for LA... and how context really matters.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check.
