Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

The overwhelming consensus this offseason among pundits, fans, and seemingly LeBron James, was that the Lakers did quite well for themselves in free agency. At worst, they maintained a nice status quo. At best, they even improved. But was there perhaps a better route that could have been pursued, with more big picture flexibility? Anthony Irwin, host of the Lakers Lounge Podcast and Substack author, thinks so. In Irwin's opinion, the Lakers could have set themselves up better with an approach that meant going into the luxury tax, losing full mid-level exception (and by extension, access to Gabe Vincent), and keeping Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba on the roster as expiring contracts for a potential in-season mega-deal. The pros and cons of each route, and whether economic concerns played too big a role, gets a deep dive examination. All that, plus thoughts on whether Lonnie Walker IV will be missed, Max Christie's readiness to enter the rotation, and if Saudi Arabia's brash, big money entry into sports could eventually disrupt the NBA as we know it. Host: Andy Kamenetzky, with Guest Anthony Irwin. Segment 1: Did the Lakers take the best possible path this offseason? Segment 2: Did money dictate the Lakers' decisions? I went more in-depth into how Carlos Alcaraz beat out Novak Djokovic in Wimbledon to take over the number one ranking spot. In my opinion, the Sixers do not have the right pieces around Joel Embiid to continue building around the superstar center. Tear it down and build around Tyrese Maxey! The signings of centers Mo Bamba and Montrezl Harrell prove that it could be the end of Joel Embiid.

This journey, Chip and Ryan discuss the recent Sixers signings. Mo Bamba and Pat Beverley join the Sixers bench. We both like these new additions. The team also matched the Jazz's offer sheet to Paul Reed, bringing him back to Philly for 3 years. Montrezl Harrell re-signs with the Sixers as well. The roster still needs to be entirely filled out... What moves could be coming? We move on to recap the Phillies season so far. The main theme remains inconsistency. When the lineup is performing, pitching is poor, when the pitching is on fire, the lineup is cold. What will the Phillies need to do at the deadline to address some of these issues? Will we see a second half rebound for guys like Turner and Schwarber? Hop on board and enjoy the ride! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thephillybandwagon/support

The show opens with Andrew and Jamie reacting to the Phillies frustrating finish to the first half of the season after dropping the series to the Marlins and want to evaluate the roster at the All-Star break (0:06-11:45). Andrew and Jamie discuss the Sixers decision to match the offer sheet of the Utah Jazz for Paul Reed and how it affects them in terms of the luxury tax as they construct the roster. The guys also get into the comments made by Joel Embiid on James Harden has handled his contract situation this offseason (11:45-36:42). Andrew and Jamie evaluate the Phillies starting rotation's performance over the first half of the season while focusing on Aaron Nola who had a disappointing and inconsistent first half, then Ray opens a special edition of the vault featuring Ryan Howard in the 2006 HR Derby (36:42-1:01:55). Andrew, Jamie, and Ray had quite the weekend for different reasons, Andrew had a fun weekend at the shore, Jamie had to do quite a bit of driving and Ray had not one but two flat tires (1:01:55-1:26:03). The Phillies selected Aidan Miller with the 27th pick in the first round of the MLB draft on Sunday night, Andrew and Jaime look back at Phillies 1st round picks through the years (1:26:03-1:47:40). Andrew and Jamie continue their evaluation of the Phillies first half of the season, now moving their focus to the Outfield and the main focus here is none-other-then Kyle Schwarber (1:47:40-2:11:10). Devon Givens joins Andrew and Jamie live from the Sixers practice facility awaiting the introductory press conference for Patrick Beverly and Mo Bamba (2:11:10-2:35:45). Andrew did some digging and found out the Phillies are 8-0 this year when Kyle Schwarber hit's a leadoff homerun. Andrew and Jamie share how they feel about the new NBA In-Season tournament (2:35:45-3:07:25).

NBA free agency began last week, and the Philadelphia 76ers were all over the wires. After James Harden opted in to his $36 million player option, he requested to be traded, and that would have been the first domino in the Sixers off-season -- or so we thought. One Fourth of July white party with Michael Rubin later, and Harden may have mended some fences (with players, not necessarily front office members -- as reported by ESPN's Ramona Shelbourne). Is it a higher possibility that Harden returns? Maybe, but the clock is definitely ticking on how quickly this move SHOULD be done. The Sixers lost some free agents (Georges Niang, Shake Milton, and Jaden McDaniels), and the cupboard has to be refilled somehow. (This was recorded before the signing of Mo Bamba as reported by Woj.) Regardless, Adio Royster and David Early catch you up on what has happened so far for the Sixers in free agency plus talk about how a Damian Lillard trade could have been done (according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst) if Tyrese Maxey was included in the deal. Who knows how much truth there is to that, honestly, because you sometimes have to take those reports with a giant salt shaker. Speaking of ESPN, Adio and David give their two cents on the latest round of ESPN layoffs that happened last week and where they feel certain personalities should go. (If we're being honest ... some of them might be better away from ESPN.) Follow Adio on Twitter. Follow David on Twitter. Follow Liberty Ballers on Twitter. Listen, like, subscribe. The Lakers lost again Wednesday, meaning they'll leave Sacramento and the California Classic without a victory. But that doesn't really matter, because it's Summer League, after all. What does? How the Important Players look. First and foremost, Max Christie. For second year players, the expectation is they should perform at a higher level than most of the players on the floor. Playing great doesn't always mean great things are coming, but poor play is a definite red flag. Christie looked excellent Monday in the team's SPL debut, and on Wednesday picked up right where he left off. 25 points, four rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. He made four of his five 3-point attempts, and shot eight free throws. Once again, Christie was the team's best player, and that's good! So how long before you feel confident he can play a role in the regular season? Meanwhile, how did Jalen Hood-Schifino look in his second game? Colin Castleton? What about Cole Swider? Evaluating players in SPL can be tricky. A lot depends on what exactly it is you think is important. In other news, the Lakers lost a potential free agent to back up Anthony Davis on Wednesday, as Mo Bamba signed with Philly to back up Joel Embiid, instead. He was one of the more prominent names that fans hoped might get signed. And in a thin free agent market, there aren't that many options remaining before folks could get pretty nervous. Finally, the Lakers are operating without any real drama, even while plenty of it swirls around the league, as James Harden and Damian Lillard are both on the market. Normally, that kind of thing worms its way into the LA conversation, even if there's no real chance Star X could land with the Lakers. This year? Nope. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Mo Bamba is headed to Philly. How many more FA's have to drop off the board before it gets concerning? SEGMENT 2: More on the Lakers' C's, plus Max Christie looks awesome! SEGMENT 3: More SPL reaction, and a drama free summer in LA. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers have some decisions to make before the roster is finalized. The most prominent is around the 14th roster spot, widely expected to go to another center. Or at the least, a really big power forward who can absorb minutes at the five. With Anthony Davis's health a priority, and a spotty injury history, reliable backups are critical. Right now, the Lakers only have free agent signee Jaxson Hayes, who disappointed in a big way over four years in New Orleans, and two-way signee Colin Castleton, a rookie out of Florida. Not exactly the most comforting options for a team that figures to lean on its backup center fairly significantly throughout the year. So who do they go get? The names aren't super exciting, and all options have serious flaws (which is to be expected, given the Lakers can only offer a minimum deal). Old faces like Wenyen Gabriel, Mo Bamba, and Montrezl Harrell, or new (to the Lakers, at least) guys like Christian Wood, Bismack Biyombo, and Willy Hernangomez. What qualities are most important for the Lakers to target? Meanwhile, the team played its first Summer League game on Monday. Max Christie was among the key players to watch, as fans hoped to see that nice leap between a player's rookie and sophomore seasons. Second year guys should look better than the rookies... so how did Christie do? What about first rounder Jalen Hood-Schifino? Last year's draftee Cole Swider? Or Castelton? What should fans look for tonight, in the team's second game? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers have to sign another center, right? Even if a better player is available at another position? SEGMENT 2: Who are the best options for the Lakers at center? What qualities should they be hunting? SEGMENT 3: Recapping Summer League Game 1: Max Christie, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Cole Swider and Colin Castleton. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! NBA Free Agency, Day 1: Lakers re-sign Rui Hachimura, Add Taurean Prince, Gabe Vincent, Cam Reddish

Player movement on Day 1 of NBA free agency wasn't as rapid fire as last offseason, but it was nonetheless pretty busy, and the Lakers were very active, moving quickly to leverage both exceptions available to them. The rundown of activity: Signed forward Taurean Prince to a one year deal worth a reported $4.5 million, likely the team's biannual exception. Signed Miami guard Gabe Vincent to a 3 year, $33 million deal, with the team's full midlevel exception - the one opened up when they declined their option on Malik Beasley, and released Mo Bamba. Signed forward Cam Reddish to a two-year deal at the veteran's minimum. This, like Thanos, was inevitable. Can the Lakers actually help him meet his potential? Re-signed forward Rui Hachimura to a three year deal at $17 million per, a nice payout for Hachimura. A little higher perhaps than the Lakers hoped, but still low enough that... ...the Lakers still have enough to re-sign Austin Reaves and D'Angelo Russell (assuming he doesn't get something way above what market price looks like it'll be). The Lakers will then fill the rest of the roster out with minimum, or near minimum deals, depending on the exact number Russell (presumably) agrees to in his return. That's the plan, at least. Whether the rest of the league cooperates it's hard to say. After all the movement on Friday, there are fewer teams with cap space to make Russell an offer above the full midlevel. And how many of those teams would go there? Bruce Brown, a major target of the Lakers, went to Indiana for more than the Lakers could offer. Dennis Schröder is heading to Toronto on a two year deal, again for more than the Lakers could offer. So did the Lakers do well on Day 1? A lot will depend on what happens with Russell, but overall signs are promising. Prince, while flawed, will provide a presence they didn't necessarily have last year, and Vincent is a nice replacement for Schröder. Reddish is a flier worth taking. They had to bring Hachimura back, and did. So a good start! The Lakers Open Space to Use Full Midlevel Exception as NBA Free Agency Begins

Wednesday, speculation that the Lakers had their eye on a full midlevel exception worth over $12 million a season, rather than the smaller taxpayer version (a little over $5) began to ramp up. And with decisions to make on Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba, we'd all learn pretty quickly what direction the Lakers would be taking. Thursday, we got our answers. The Lakers declined a team option on Beasley, then released Bamba (along with Shaq Harrison) to give themselves a chance to use that larger exception. The big target? Likely Denver's Bruce Brown, and Thursday The Athletic's Jovan Buha reported the Lakers feel like they have a good shot at signing the versatile, hard-nosed guard. Granted, they'll have a lot of competition, because basically every team in the league would love to have him. So should fans print their Brown jerseys? Is Milwaukee center Brook Lopez, mentioned as another player the Lakers would want, even a small possibility? Because he'd be a perfect fit next to Anthony Davis. But if it's not those guys, who else would be worth that kind of money? Did the Lakers take a big risk in letting someone like Bamba, who definitely fills a potential need at backup C that the Lakers will need to fill (and the market is slim, to say the least)? Does it make sense to chop up that big exception into smaller parts? How many dudes could the Lakers bring in, if the market breaks their way? The whole thing begins at 3 pm Pacific time. That's when teams can start signing players, and things tend to get wild and wooly very, very fast. The Lakers might not be at the front of the line, and someone like Brown (reportedly set to visit the Mavericks, among other teams) will likely take his time. Stay tuned! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers make moves to open up the use of a full midlevel exception. SEGMENT 2: If not Bruce Brown, then who? SEGMENT 3: More names the Lakers could target with all of, or part of, their newfound access to contract options. Can the Lakers Maintain Continuity... and Also Try to Sign Bruce Brown as a Free Agent?

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

On Tuesday, introducing the team's two draft picks to the local media, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka reiterated the idea the team enters this offseason valuing continuity. They want to keep this core group together, and build on what was accomplished following the trade deadline last season. Of course, continuity can mean a lot of different things, as can core. Some guys are more core than others, right? So who might get left out if the Lakers decide to run it back... mostly? And if they go that direction, do they have a path to better players? Well, on Wednesday reports indicated the Lakers would be very, very interested in Denver's Bruce Brown, were they to free up use of their non-taxpayer midlevel exception, worth a little over $12 million. They'd have plenty of competition, and even getting to a place where an offer could be made would mean parting ways with Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba, and perhaps more. And it would also require a very astute reading of the free agent market, because using that exception would hard cap the Lakers and they'd need to squeeze a lot of folks in with the money available (Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, D'Angelo Russell being the most important). It would limit their flexibility, potentially... but it would also open up an avenue to maximize the talent that could be had on the free agent market. It's a tough choice for Rob Pelinka... unless he has a good feel for what's coming this summer. And certainly early signs are that the market for Russell and even Hachimura might not be as robust as initially thought as the season was winding down. There's a world in which the Lakers keep everyone that matters, even potentially Dennis Schröder, and still manage to improve the team. There's also a path where they swing and miss and find themselves short on valuable supporting pieces. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers value continuity... meaning what, exactly? SEGMENT 2: Could the Lakers make a run at Bruce Brown? SEGMENT 3: Is it worth the attempt to get a guy like Brown? Because after him, there aren't a lot of realistic upgrades, and they could be left holding the bag having sacrificed depth and flexibility. NBA free agency kicks off Friday at 3 pm PT, and while the Lakers aren't likely to be first out of the gate—that tends to be the teams with real dollars to spend—they'll most certainly be paying close attention to where the first wave of players land, and who might be left over. A big (or bigger than the Lakers can make, at least) offer to someone like Dennis Schröder could change the landscape a little, too, because it might mean the taxpayer mid-level exception people expect the Lakers to use (and currently, in theory, earmarked for Schröder) would go somewhere else. It's a thin year for free agents, so who is out there that might make sense? And what about Jalen Hood-Schifino? There's still plenty to learn about LA's first round pick from last week's draft. There's nobody better to handle the intersection of these stories than Jacob Rude, who covers the Lakers for Silver Screen and Roll, and Indiana hoops for Locked On Hoosiers. In a fabulous moment of serendipity, his worlds have collided in a major way. He joins the show to break down what he saw from Hood-Schifino last year at Indiana, and continue deliver insight into the first rounder. How does he fit with the backcourt the Lakers seem likely to bring back? What about his mental game? His approach to the craft? Rude, who watched every game the kid played last year, breaks it all down. From there, it's back to the Lakers and free agency looming. Before they get there, the Lakers have to make decisions about Mo Bamba and Malik Beasley. Do they pick up those team options? Why would it make sense to bring both back? And what about potential free agents? Would a veteran like Kevin Love make sense, if he'd take the midlevel? Jeff Green? And why does nobody ever mention Troy Brown in those "run it back" conversations? Should he be? What about Lonnie Walker IV? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with guest Jacob Rude! SEGMENT 1: More deep dive into Jalen Hood-Schifino. SEGMENT 2: Can JHS play enough D to stay on the court? How should the Lakers handle Beasley and Bamba? SEGMENT 3: Potential free agents... Has the Free Agency Market Been Set for Rui Hachimura? Do the Lakers Need to Keep Mo Bamba?

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

The Draft is done, and now the NBA is getting ready for the rush of free agency. In a twist on the normal run of things, the Lakers really aren't a big part of the rumor mill. The reasons are fairly obvious: They lack cap space, and to create any, it would require the Lakers to clear the decks of too many important players. Way too many. Meanwhile, the types of guys they can afford aren't the shiny names that get attention at this point of the process. But logic and reality has never been a big part of determining whether people talk about the Lakers and free agent action. Instead, the focus really is much more on the market for their own free agents, and whether the Lakers will make a real effort to run it back. That starts with D'Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura. And the market for Hachimura might have taken shape over the weekend, when Minnesota's Naz Reid signed an extension with the Wolves for about $14 million a season. And while some Lakers fans had pipe dreams of somehow getting Reid to LA - that was never going to happen - that the Wolves got him for just above the full midlevel is a good sign for the Lakers. At first look, it's hard to see how many teams will go much higher than that for Hachimura. The teams with cap space (Houston, for example) don't benefit using it on Rui. Really good teams that might have a defined role for him don't have the money. So maybe the Lakers keep him for something like that $14 mil, which is a few mil less than what the top end could be, and given all the tax math the Lakers are doing, that could be a big deal. They also have a choice to make on Mo Bamba, who would get a little more appealing on the open market with Reid gone as an option. Should the Lakers decline his $10 million option for next year, would they be able to lure him back on a smaller deal? If they let him go, who could replace him? It's a pickle! Bamba may not be perfect, but he's very likely better than who the Lakers could get on a minimum deal, and to use their exception to fill a hole they created would be painful. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers aren't a big part of the discourse as free agency talk heats up. SEGMENT 2: Did Naz Reid set the market for Rui Hachimura? Anthony Davis Is Eligible for an Extension In August. Will the Lakers Offer One to Him?

In August, the Lakers can give Anthony Davis a three-year extension worth $167 million. The decision of whether to give it to him, or risk him potentially opting out of his deal after next season and walking as a free agent, is a tricky one. On the one hand, the Lakers will be hard pressed to find a player better than him, even while factoring in additional age and mileage. Frustrating as he occasionally is, Davis is still in the NBA's elite tier, and those guys are really, really hard to find. On the other hand, paying Davis over $55 million a year, pushing that past a realistic timeline for LeBron James, would make any GM nervous. Would it be better for the Lakers to end the Davis Era at the same time the LeBron Era closes? There's risk everywhere, no question. So what's the right play, here? Meanwhile, Austin Reaves has officially made it. The internet has been hopping with Reaves-is-dating-Taylor Swift content this week. Is it true? No, it is not. But even being big enough to be mentioned in Taylor Swift gossip as a joke is a major indication of how big a name he's become. Between that and his LemonDaddy.com billboards (and a killer post-All Star and postseason run that put him in line for about $75 million this offseason) it's been a good run for AR. Finally, the Lakers seem very willing to at least explore trades including D'Angelo Russell. But that would need to be a sign-and-trade, which are notoriously hard to pull off. But what about trading Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba? What are the mechanics, and what might they get in return? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis is extension eligible in August. Will the Lakers make him an offer? SEGMENT 2: What are the risks and rewards in play? Which Young Laker Has the Most Upside? And What Can the Lakers Learn From the NBA Finals?

On the one hand, the Lakers entered the final minute with a real chance to win in three of the four games they lost in the Western Conference Finals to the Denver Nuggets. On the other... they lost all of them. And while you could argue it means the gap between Denver and LA isn't as big as 4-0 might indicate, there's still definitely a gap. How big? The NBA Finals, which kicked off Thursday, might provide a clue. Both to how the Lakers stack up against the Nuggets, but where they might fit in that next tier of contenders, and how crowded that group might be. One thing that will help close the gap next year? Internal improvement. Assuming the Lakers bring back the expected group of players, a lot of attention will be given to the relative youth of the supporting cast. Generally, young players are talked about as having "upside." Often, teams have a couple prospects that they hope will become franchise cornerstones, and even elite NBA players. The Lakers don't have that level of prospect, but how much better can Austin Reaves get? How about Rui Hachimura? What about Max Christie? For the Lakers, if a guy like Christie can become a reliable, game in/game out rotation player for the regular season next year - even for 10-15 minutes a night - that's like acquiring an extra free agent, or pulling off a trade. The Lakers will certainly look to get better by dangling players like Mo Bamba, Malik Beasley and D'Angelo Russell (in sign-and-trade scenarios). How appealing will those options be, though? So while they've remade their depth, getting significantly better could be tough. Unless, of course, that improvement happens internally. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What could the Finals teach us about the Lakers? SEGMENT 2: Which young player on the Lakers has the most upside? SEGMENT 3: Why internal improvement could be tremendously valuable for LA... and how context really matters. Can the Lakers Close Out Memphis in Game 6? Will Darvin Ham Adjust His Bench Rotation?

The Lakers hit a wall on Wednesday, missing shots and falling short against a highly motivated Memphis Grizzlies squad in Game 5. LeBron James looked tired, but vowed to be better in Game 6. And surely the Crypto.com Arena crowd will be jacked up for the first closeout game the fans have seen in a very, very long time. One key will be keeping that energy flowing throughout, and not allowing the Grizzlies the ability to put fear into nearly 20,000 folks. It'll help for the Lakers to hit some shots, because these sub-30% 3-point nights aren't gonna get it done. It'll help to force some turnovers, and create easy buckets. It'll help for LeBron to do good stuff early, after a really bad night on Wednesday. And would it also help if Darvin Ham tweaked the rotation? There have been many, many calls for Ham to quit running with the small lineups while Anthony Davis is off the floor, where LeBron or Rui Hachimura is playing center, and the Lakers are undersized. Those small bench lineups were hammered in Game 5. But what's the right solution? Is it to play Wenyen Gabriel more? Mo Bamba? What about those minutes going to Malik Beasley? Should they instead go to Lonnie Walker IV, or should both guys sit and the rotation get a little shorter? Plenty of choices, and in a tight series, they matter. But whatever the decisions, the Lakers have every reason to come out focused and get 'er done. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Darvin Ham is looking at the rotation. Is it time to make changes? SEGMENT 2: Is it Bamba? Walker? What are the ripple effects effects when changes like this are made? SEGMENT 3: What goes into making these kinds of choices? How Would Memphis Losing Ja Morant Impact Game 2 for the Lakers?

The big news on Monday? ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that there are serious doubts around Memphis guard Ja Morant's availability for Game 2 on Wednesday night. While the Grizzlies have played well in the past without Morant, losing their star would obviously be a massive blow to a team already down 1-0 in the series. The Lakers ran away with Game 1 after Morant sat in the fourth. So what would change in the Memphis attack if Morant can't go? Would it mean more Jaren Jackson Jr. in the post, a place where he feasted against every defender the Lakers tried who wasn't named Anthony Davis. How might the Lakers respond? Would it make sense for Darvin Ham to go bigger, as a couple listeners/viewers have suggested? Maybe some Mo Bamba, or even Tristan Thompson? (Spoiler alert... no.) And why didn't Davis get even a single vote anywhere in the Defensive Player of the Year Award voting? He actually played more minutes than Jackson Jr. (your runaway winner), even while playing in fewer games. It says a lot about how the media thinks of these awards, the vagaries of determining the league's most impactful defensive player, and a lot about the way A.D. is perceived more broadly. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What happens if Ja Morant misses Game 2 for Memphis? SEGMENT 2: If Ja is out, does that mean more of Jackson Jr. in the post? Is that a problem for L.A.? (And is it a problem that playing different bigs might solve?) SEGMENT 3: Why didn't Anthony Davis get even a single point anywhere in the DPOY voting? The Lakers lost a disappointing game on Wednesday in Houston, one that could end up being quite costly in the standings when all is said and done. It was certainly bad enough that the disappointment and anger about it from Lakers fans was still palpable. Many left comments about Darvin Ham's work in that game (starting Rui Hachimura instead of Wenyen Gabriel, for example) or the fact that the Lakers, despite knowing Anthony Davis wouldn't play and that Gabriel was their only available big with Mo Bamba injured, didn't bother to sign another center to have on hand. A little size couldn't have hurt, given how bad the rim protection was on Wednesday night. So how confident should Lakers fans be with Ham right now? On the one hand, with better players, lo and behold, suddenly the team is winning a lot more. And while he shoudn't get all the credit, it's unfair only to pin losses on Ham, but never give him credit for success. The pressure on Ham to be excellent has remained consistent, even as the team has improved because the entire season has been free of margin for error. Big picture, it's easy to feel encouraged by what the Lakers have done since the deadline. This is a team that clearly is much better than it was, even without the opportunity to play with LeBron for any meaningful stretch of time. So it was encouraging then to see reporting from Jovan Buha (The Athletic) that the Lakers are leaning now to running it back this summer, rather than making a big play for a high priced star free agent. (That would be Kyrie Irving, because he's really the only one.) There are eleventybillion reasons this is the better path forward. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Viewers weigh in on Darvin Ham's performance on Wednesday and for the season. SEGMENT 2: Just how good or bad has Ham been? D'Angelo Russell Expected to Return Friday for the Lakers, but Mo Bamba out a Month

The Lakers are expected to get some serious lineup relief tonight vs. Toronto, with D'Angelo Russell returning to the floor after a six game absence. And none too soon, because while the team has performed admirably with Dennis Schröder and Austin Reaves functioning as primary ball-handlers and team organizers, it's not a role that either is perfectly suited to play. Having Russell back in the lineup returns both guys to a more natural role - Schröder as an attacking guard off the bench, and Reaves as a natural facilitator and connecter, but not necessarily a point guard. Darvin Ham gets more options, which is something every coach appreciates. Plus, Russell's ability as a shooter should open the floor not just for interior players like Anthony Davis or Jarred Vanderbilt, but should also take some of the heat off a guy like Malik Beasley, who struggled in D'Lo's absence. Mo Bamba, unfortunately, will be out for about a month with an ankle sprain, robbing the Lakers not just of their only source of rim protection not named Anthony Davis, but also the opportunity to see how Bamba fits with this Lakers roster. They have choices to make this offseason, and Bamba (who has a team option for about $10 mil next year) is one of them. Even if the Lakers make the playoffs and Bamba is able to return by then, they're simply not going to get the kind of sample size of games/minutes they'd have liked. But while the Bamba injury hurts, the opportunity to have Russell back and playing well in a Western Conference that seems even more wide open following injuries to Luka Doncic on an already slumping Mavs squad, Brandon Ingram on a Pelicans team that is barely keeping its head above water, and then Kevin Durant on the Suns, who will miss a few weeks with an ankle injury. Phoenix isn't a team the Lakers are likely to catch, but it means when they play the Suns later this month, Durant is likely going to be in street clothes. From a scheduling standpoint, things just continue to open up for LA. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: D'Angelo Russell returns to the lineup. What's the impact on LA's rotation? SEGMENT 2: Mo Bamba will miss a month, a blow not just for this year, but for thinking of next season, too. SEGMENT 3: An interesting YouTube page comment pointing to a low key benefit of bringing this deeper group back next year, plus a look at more ways things are breaking in favor of the Lakers.
