Guster got its start in a Tufts dorm room in the early '90s. Thirty years on, they're still going strong. Miller and his bandmates have released nine albums over the last three and a half decades.Miller is also the former host of the Vermont PBS show Makin' Friends With Ryan Miller, and composes for film and theater. His indie-rock musical, Safety Not Guaranteed, based on the film of the same name, is currently at the Signature Theater in Northern Virginia.We'll talk with him about his long-term friendships with his bandmates and making new friends when he and his family moved to Vermont. Ryan Miller of Guster is the guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. We recorded it live this past August at One Longfellow Square in Portland, Maine as part of Guster's very inspiring On the Ocean Festival. It was an amazing day and great to sit down with Ryan and talk about the last Guster record Ooh La La, The Scorpion's “Still Loving You”, high school bands, writing songs on new instruments, Matt Johnson and The The, working with new producers, Guster's college rep program and community building in this modern age. I came away from the weekend in awe of all Guster had put together and it was super great to speak with Ryan about the way they've approached things.

Mike Delevante recently released his debut album, September Days, on Truly Handmade Records, a label founded by Guy Clark LLC's board of directors (including Grammy-winning author, producer, and filmmaker Tamara Saviano, who fell in love with the album at first listen). Not many artists release their first solo record two decades after their debut album but that's the case for Delevante, who spent the 1990s recording and touring as half of trailblazing Americana duo the Delevantes with his older brother Bob. The duo's acclaimed releases on Rounder and Capitol records in that era made a splash — Long About That Time (Rounder) was the first #1 debut album on Gavin's newly created Americana radio chart —and found them touring with like-minded artists including John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Levon Helm and others. So, while it's hardly the first musical endeavor for Delevante, September Days is an important step for a musician who'd never put the spotlight directly on himself, until now. Produced by Joe Pisapia, whose production credits include work with Ben Folds, Guster, k.d. lang and many others, the album's shimmering guitars and instantly memorable melodies recall some of the 90's best guitar pop artists (Matthew Sweet, Freedy Johnston, Ron Sexsmith, The Jayhawks and more).  That decision was a long time coming. The Delevante brothers were New Jersey natives who've made Nashville their home since the ‘90s, along with frequent collaborator and co-producer, Garry Tallent of the E Street Band. Mike had shifted gears, focusing on visual arts. Both he and his brother had studied art in college, with Bob also turning more toward visual projects in the 2000s, but Bob had also made three solo records along the way. It was Tallent who got the brothers back into music. He'd enlisted them to sing on his 2019 solo album More Like Me, then invited them to be part of a live show he was doing in Asbury Park with Southside Johnny and special guest Bruce Springsteen. They had such a blast that “I felt myself getting pulled back into it,” Mike says. The result was 2021's A Thousand Turns. "Baby Man" The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Eric D. Johnson has one of the most consistently wonderful bodies of work you'll ever run to in this lifetime. From his 2001 debut Echolocation to albums like The Ruminant Band, Tripper, Gold Past Life, A River Running To Your Heart to his brand new one Baby Man, Johnson's discography has no dips and or musical unforced errors--every note, every melody, every turn of phrase is deeply affecting and altogether stirring. The Chicago-born Johnson is a prolific songwriter, who, in addition to his Fruit Bats endeavors, was a member of The Shins and currently is one-third of the the exquisite folk trio Bonny Light Horseman. Over the course of their career, the Fruit Bats have toured with everyone from Modest Mouse to The Sadies, had their songs covered by folks like The Decemberists and Guster, had their songs appear in movies like Youth In Revolt and Our Idiot Brother and played festivals like Bonnaroo, Pickathon and the Dave Matthews Band Caravan. By the way, this is a partial list, but here's a few more resume' highlights: they've garnered rave reviews from No Depression, Variety and MOJO, recorded a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins album Siamese Dream and played on late night shows like Craig Ferguson and Seth Meyers. On today's all new cast, we take a look back at the Billboard Modern Rock Chart for this week back on July 4, 1998. We go over all 40 songs on the chart, and how all the tracks on this chart perfectly encapsulated the look and feel of the late 90's era with Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" moving into the #1 spot for the first time, and how it ushered in a whole new era of sonic bliss for many music fans. We encounter such riveting hits like Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta", Fastball's "The Way", Eve 6's "Inside Out", Barenaked Ladies "One Week", and so many other terrific tunes that were a constant presence on our mixtapes way back when. We also discuss how this chart became a haven for many pop-friendly radio hits in the late 90's due to a Billboard chart policy that prevented these songs from charting on the Hot 100 chart simply for the fact that they weren't commercially available as a single. We also play a local song that featured on this chart from Somerville's own Guster called "Airport Song".

Fastball started recording their first album 30 years ago, and in 1998 they released their second album that propelled them to rock stardom. They sold over a million albums, they were nominated for two grammy's, and were constantly on MTV. From then on Fastball has been touring the world playing their music. This summer they're touring with Barenaked Ladies, Guster and Sugar Ray, and Miles Zuniga was nice enough to stop by the show! With nine studio albums and a dedicated live following, the band has topped Billboard's independent albums chart with Evermotion in 2015 and Look Alive in 2019. Among their top 5 singles on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart are the songs “Amsterdam,” “Careful,” “One Man Wrecking Machine,” “Satellite,” and “Overexcited.” In addition to his work with the band, Miller has composed the scores for over 15 feature films, and launched his own TV show on Vermont PBS. The creative omnivore has also written a screenplay, a musical, and several feature articles. But Miller always returns to the band he loves. Guster's most recent album is 2024's Ooh La La.
