Matt's birthday-inspired journey through debut albums from 1995 reveals the remarkable beginnings of artists who would shape music for decades to come. The mix includes everything from Alanis Morissette's record-breaking "Jagged Little Pill" to Dave Grohl's post-Nirvana reinvention with Foo Fighters. The mid-90s represented a pivotal moment in music history. Grunge was evolving, electronic music was gaining mainstream traction, and powerful female voices were reshaping rock and pop. We dive deep into tracks that showcase these shifts – like Garbage's ironic commentary on angst in "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" and The Chemical Brothers' groundbreaking electronic soundscapes on "Exit Planet Dust."What's particularly striking is how many of these artists continue creating vital music today. Ben Folds, Guster, The Chemical Brothers and others have evolved their sound while maintaining the creative essence first displayed in those 1995 debuts. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/matt-2025-birthday-mix/pl.u-EPWWTVMmxr1. One of the most fun interviews we've had in a while! PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about the time Paul opened for Guster, their friend who met his wife thanks to Guster fandom, and the phenomenon of social cultures forming around certain performers. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Guster's Ryan MillerABOUT RYAN MILLER:Ryan Miller is best known for his work with the alternative rock band Guster. With nine studio albums and a dedicated live following, the band has topped Billboard's independent albums chart with Evermotion in 2015 and Look Alive in 2019. Among their top 5 singles on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart are the songs “Amsterdam,” “Careful,” “One Man Wrecking Machine,” “Satellite,” and “Overexcited.” In addition to his work with the band, Miller has composed the scores for over 15 feature films, and launched his own TV show on Vermont PBS. The creative omnivore has also written a screenplay, a musical, and several feature articles. But Miller always returns to the band he loves. Guster's most recent album is 2024's Ooh La La.

Frontman Ryan Miller joins us to talk about all things Guster. From their tried and true collaborative writing process to the theatrical delights of their recent "We Also Have Eras" tour, to what it really looks like to make environmental sustainability a priority on tour. Guster has just released their 9th studio album, Ooh La La. As we talked about the new record, Ryan talked about how these new songs touch on questions that the band has been asking throughout their over 30 year career. For example, "Maybe We're Alright" calls back to the collectivist spirit that we loved in 2003's Keep It Together. "Gaugin, Cezanne (Everlasting Love)" talks about God in a way that brought up new questions for me about 2010's album, Easy, Wonderful, and so on. This is what makes being a Guster fan so rewarding. The longer you listen to these guys and the deeper you dig, the more you feel empowered to ask questions about the world around you and approach the answers with playfulness. Guster is a band, but it is also a place where we all meet to dance away the big questions with whimsy to the beat of tasteful hand drums. It is no exaggeration to say that lizzie has waited over 20 years to talk to Ryan. They became a fan of the New England indie outfit in 2003 when they opened for John Mayer at the West Point Military Academy, of all places. The vibe in the room was a little stiff, but Guster was anything but. Their exuberant, generous, harmony filled, idiosyncratic performance blew her teenage mind. As lizzie dug deeper into their lore, they discovered that they were a part of a vast network of weirdos: The Guster fandom. Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? The alternative rock band Guster, formed over bongos and acoustic guitars at Tufts University in 1991, has built its reputation on their striking vocal harmonies, their close connection to their fans, and their sense of humor. So in the wake of Taylor Swift's bank-busting Eras tour, Guster embarked on their own tour, which they called "We Also Have Eras" – a reminder of their enduring presence and road warrior work ethic on the music scene for over 30 years. Guster has a new record out, their first in 5 years, called Ooh La La, and it brings the band back to our studio for a live set, with bongos. Set list: 1. Keep Going 2. Black Balloon 3. Satellite (with Max Fine, piano)

Guster formed in 1991, and has since released 9 records, had a Top 40 hit, a gold record, played Woodstock 99, started the label Ocho Mule, and is still growing today. We sat down with lead singer Ryan Miller, who is also a film composer, sometimes writer for The Atlantic, budding Broadway composer/writer and a former host on Vermont Public TV. We talk with Ryan about managing so many spinning plates, running towards fear, parallels between a music career and entrepreneurship (iterating, failing, learning, improving, and then repeating), managing personalities and wants over a 33-year career, and so much more.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:GusterRyan Miller"Making Friends with Ryan Miller" - Vermont TV"Bardo" - Vermont TVReverb (non-profit)Ryan's Atlantic ArticleJoe PisapiaEp 45 - Glen PhillipsPJ Vogt - Molly RingwaldNicole AtkinsEp 38 - John DoeMike GordonNoah KahanGrace PotterBonny Light HorsemanClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. He co-produced and co-wrote Guster's 2006 release, Ganging Up On the Sun, an album that cracked Billboard's Top 25 and was one of the best selling internet albums of the year. He did the same on the band's 2010 Easy Wonderful. He produced and penned the title track for Lang's 2011 album, Sing It Loud, and acted as music director for the accompanying tour. As a producer and mixer Joes credits include: Ben Folds Five's, The Hush Kids, Zac Clark, Drew Holcolmb, Chuck Mead, Josh Rouse, Courtney Jaye, Matt Wertz, William Tyler, The Silver Seas and The Pierces and when the Grammy Award-winning band Fun needed orchestral recording for its Grammy performance, they called on Joe. His 2002 release Daydreams was given four stars and called “stellar” by AllMusic.com. Ron Sexsmith called 2015's Nightvision, “amazing” and the “best thing” he's “heard in a long time.”  In 2016 Pisapia collaborated with singer/ songwriter Kate York for the duet E.P. “Kate York And Joe Pisapia.” and in 2018 Joe released two full length solo albums. “Connection” and “Cosmic Christmas”.  In 2019 Pisapia recorded his first instrumental album, “Imbolc.” For a 2020 release of the album, he made music “videos,” which consisted of him making some of his favorite comfort foods. Joe also produced much of, and mixed all of Pam Tillis' “Looking For A Feeling.” Tillis cut Pisapia's song “Better Friends,” which was originally released on his solo album, “Connection.” NPR's Ann Powers singled out Tillis' version of “Better Friends” calling it a “quintessential country song.” Also in 2019 Joe produced Jillette Johnson's “It's A Beautiful Day And I Love You,” and was part of the live ensemble whom recorded the album “Outside Child” by Allison Russell, produced by Dan Knobler which Joe described as “tantamount to a holy experience.” THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! https://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://www.native-instruments.com use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://lewitt.link/rockstars https://www.Spectra1964.com https://MacSales.com/rockstars https://iZotope.com use code ROCK10 to get 10% off any individual plugin! https://www.adam-audio.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy  https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Listen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Y5ypkRrlcKQWcy6fPjgX8?si=dec7efe6473e4d00 If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/425

Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke are joined by Kathleen York, who played Renee Wheeler on The OC. It's already that time: Chrismukkah! Yet this year, it's “The Chrismukkah That Almost Wasn't” (S2 Ep6). Kathleen's story can be inspirational for aspiring actors; listen and hear how Kathleen found her success. She talks about a guest spot on a show she wasn't interested in, leading to a singing appearance at the Oscars! And, she shares her experience playing a masseuse on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” (which stars Larry David, Rachel's celebrity crush!). They dive into the Julie and Jimmy sex scene, making Melinda blush and “plead the Bilson.” The hosts surmise how Renee explained to Lindsay where her dad was. And, they share memories from filming those giant kitchen scenes with the entire cast in them. Of course, this episode notes all of the Chrismukkah charm: Seth's job wheel, the yamaclaus, and the band Guster's "Carol of the Meows" that plays throughout! The Chrismukkah That Almost Wasn't Synopsis: The whole gang is invited to Chrismukkah at the Cohens' house, but Seth's favorite holiday is nearly ruined as secrets are revealed that will change the Cohen family forever. Jimmy and Julie are more than friendly and Seth, Summer, Marissa and Ryan make a plan to save Chrismukkah.
