The Bucks lost 117-98 despite Giannis Antetokounmpo's 36-point performance on better than 60% field goal shooting.Ti Windisch, Rohan Katti, and Jordan Treske convened to dissect why Doc Rivers simply has to change up the starting lineup, even if they don't think he will, after Taurean Prince and Kyle Kuzma combined for a grand total of 0 points and Brook Lopez predictably struggled with Indiana's speed and shooting bigs. They also discuss what went right for the Bucks, namely their Giannis and bench lineup that got them back in the game despite Gary Trent Jr and Bobby Portis Jr not shooting well from 3, and how nice it was to see AJ Green show he can knock down 3s at a high clip in a playoff game. The GSPN trio also discussed the impact Damian Lillard could have when he returns to the lineup, either next time out or for Game 3, but agree that simply inserting Dame for Ryan Rollins won't be enough to counteract the Bucks weaknesses on display from their starting group. The Milwaukee Bucks snapped their three-game losing streak with a strong win over the Los Angeles Lakers in Milwaukee on Thursday night, so Ti Windisch was joined by Justin Garcia from the Bucks Radio Network and Locked on Bucks Podcast to discuss what went right for Milwaukee in that game and many more Bucks topics. Ti and Justin weighed in on how they feel the Bucks acquisitions (Kevin Porter Jr., Kyle Kuzma, and Jericho Sims) are succeeding early in Milwaukee, how much of the offense should revolve around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard and whether it matters if they are facilitators or the actual scorers, if the Bucks should ultimately replace Taurean Prince with one of Gary Trent Jr. or AJ Green, if any of the Bucks current out of rotation players have a chance to get back in, and how the Dame and Giannis partnership is going in year 2. The Milwaukee Bucks finally got another win over a top team, taking down the Denver Nuggets at home on Thursday night. Giannis Antetokounmpo unsurprisingly led the way, but Damian Lillard helped slam the door with a clutch 3 and all five Bucks starters plus Gary Trent Jr scored in double figures. Ti Windisch and Rohan Katti discussed the nice win and what it means for the Bucks, plus Milwaukee's gameplan against Denver and Doc Rivers' decision to stick with Taurean Prince as a starter despite the fact that he is apparently hurt. They also talked more Kyle Kuzma, who continues to impress with his defensive acumen and rim pressure.GSPN's Bucks podcasts are presented by PrizePicks – Go to PrizePicks.com/Gyrostep and use code Gyrostep for a $50 bonus when you play $5! The Milwaukee Bucks have missed Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard for their last three games, but managed to go 2-1 in that stretch (and had a good shot at 3-0) thanks to some big-time contributions from Bobby Portis, Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez, Ryan Rollins, and other key players. Ti Windisch and Rohan Katti sat down after the Bucks lost to the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday to discuss the latest on Giannis and Dame's status with the illness that is keeping them on the injury report, how Bobby has quieted trade talk with his exemplary play, Khris Middleton showing positive signs toward his progression while still struggling somewhat with ball pressure, Rollins returning to the rotation, the ups and downs of Rollins, AJ Green, Andre Jackson Jr, Gary Trent Jr and Taurean Prince, and gave Brook Lopez a shout-out for reaching 20th in NBA history in all-time blocks. Then they laughed at the Miami Heat for this mess of a Jimmy Butler situation. The Milwaukee Bucks continued their winning ways on Tuesday night, dismantling the Detroit Pistons in their most complete win of the season and clinching the top spot in the Eastern Conference region of the NBA Cup as well. The Bucks will host the Orlando Magic next week with a trip to Las Vegas for the semifinals on the line. Before talking NBA Cup Ti Windisch and Rohan Katti dove into the Bucks' latest win, including Giannis Antetokounmpo becoming even more deadly thanks to his mid-range accuracy, Damian Lillard making the Bucks offense unstoppable with his on- and off-ball shooting, Taurean Prince being the most reliable possible role player this season, Gary Trent Jr. stepping up, why Bobby Portis has to go, and more discussion of the Bucks rotation and the job Doc Rivers has done as head coach pulling the team together. Minnesota Timberwolves vs. LA Lakers NBA Betting Pick Prediction 10/22/2024 by Tony T. Timberwolves at Lakers 10:30PM ET—Minnesota has a clean injury report. Vanderbilt, Wood and Koloko are out for LA. Minnesota won 56 games in the regular season last year as they were the best defensive team in the league by allowing 108.4 points per 100 possessions with a +6.3 net rating. Their trade of Karl Anthony Towns brought in Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. Randle gives the Timberwolves a solid rebounding in addition to his offensive skills. LA finished at 47-34 last season but still ended up in the play in round and early exit from the playoffs. Their team sat 17th in defensive efficiency by allowing 114.8 points per 100 possessions and finishing with a +0.6 net rating. Exiting is Taurean Prince and return everyone else. The Lakers saw improved three point shooting last year but were 28th in attempted three pointers. Rookie Dalton Knecht immediate impact is in question.
The Milwaukee Bucks played basketball for the first time in months on Sunday night and it was glorious… for about eight minutes. Then the game went awry, including both offensive ineptitude once Damian Lillard checked out of the game plus Gary Trent Jr. hurting his elbow and leaving the game in the second quarter. Ti Windisch and Rohan Katti discussed everybody who played for the Bucks in their first Gyro Step of the 2024-25 season, starting with Trent Jr. and giving some context for other elbow injuries and how long they've kept NBA players out and then gushing over the Dame offensive explosion. Brook Lopez looking spry, Bobby Portis spraying threes and not being able to DHO, a nice debut for Taurean Prince, a low-key solid Pat Connaughton game, and a whole ton of disappointing young Bucks were also covered. The Liam Robbins bandwagon starts right here folks. GSPN's Bucks podcasts are presented by PrizePicks – Go to PrizePicks.com/Gyrostep and use code Gyrostep for a $50 bonus when you play $5! Milwaukee Bucks assistant general manager Milt Newton joined Marques Johnson & Kris Johnson to discuss his incredible journey with basketball and an inside perspective on Milwaukee's offseason transactions over the past two seasons. Their conversation begins with a look at Newton's basketball life, starting with the influential D.C. basketball scene and his early days as a player before transitioning to his college years with the 1988 NCAA Champion Kansas Jayhawks. He shares stories from ‘Danny & The Miracles,' learning from iconic coaches like Larry Brown, John Calipari and Roy Woods, playing with Danny Manning and more from that era of his life. That leads to a chat about how he transitioned to NBA front office roles and why his time under iconic coaches influences how he looks at roster construction. Milt breaks down the Bucks' mindset and approach to their three key offseason additions of Delon Wright, Taurean Prince and Gary Trent Jr. He provides a deeper look at the Damian Lillard trade nearly one year later and how the team has evolved around its core for the upcoming season. The conversation is capped off as we learn more about Newton's artistic side and how he made a larger impact on Kris' career than he even knew. The Milwaukee Bucks had a great summer, adding Gary Trent Jr., Taurean Prince, and Delon Wright to their existing core of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez, etc. But despite the good work by Jon Horst, where do the Bucks stack up compared to the rest of the Eastern Conference? Ti Windisch and Rohan Katti went from the top to the bottom and shared their perspective on who the best and worst teams in the East are, and how Milwaukee fits into the picture. In order, the guys covered Giannis, Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton, Gary Trent Jr., Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, Taurean Prince, Delon Wright, Pat Connaughton, A.J. This week on Hear District, Marques and Kris share their takeaways from NBA Summer League and highlight the Bucks players whose performances they found most encouraging. They also break down the exciting additions GM Jon Horst has made to the roster, including Delon Wright, Taurean Prince, and Gary Trent Jr., and share why these three players in particular will impact the team on both ends of the floor. The episode wraps with a discussion on reports of the WNBA's media rights negotiations and how the league's stars are ushering in a new era for women's sports. The Milwaukee Bucks have five players who appear to be realistic candidates to start next to Damian Lillard next season, and Ti Windisch and Rohan Katti ranked them on the latest episode of the Gyro Step. MarJon Beauchamp, A.J. Green, Delon Wright, Andre Jackson Jr. and Taurean Prince all could make sense as Milwaukee's latest fifth starter, and Ti and Rohan went through the case for and against each and in the case of the young players tried to explain what it would take for them to win the job. They then discussed the remaining free agents who could make sense for the Bucks' 15th roster spot, including Markelle Fultz, Gary Trent Jr. and Lonnie Walker, before discussing how cool it is that Giannis Antetokounmpo is going to play in the Olympics for the first time and breaking down his road to helping Greece medal in basketball for the first time EVER. The Milwaukee Bucks signed another productive NBA veteran on Wednesday when they added Taurean Prince on a minimum deal, bringing the reported roster up to 14 players with Delon Wright and the two rookies factored in. Ti Windisch, Adam McGee, and Rohan Katti discussed Prince's value and what he can provide to the Bucks, the real story of what he provides, the role new lead assistant coach Darvin Ham likely played in Prince's decision, and whether or he one of the many other players in the running (Delon Wright, Andre Jackson Jr., A.J. Green, MarJon Beauchamp, Pat Connaughton??) will start. They also cover Irish national basketball for some reason. Plus Giannis Antetokounmpo's journey with the Greek national team to qualify for the Olympics, and whether the Bucks are done and if the roster has any more changes coming, including trades. That conversation covered which out of Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, and Pat Connaughton are most likely to be dealt. Jim Rutledge and Molly Brown take you home into the 4th of July weekend with a discussion about the DISAPPOINTMENT that is the US Men's National soccer team. Jim says that he doesn't see soccer ever finally becoming one of the nation's most popular sports like he's heard for so long, and Molly pushes back by pointing out the structural differences between soccer in the USA versus the rest of the world. Primetime breaks into the futbol talk with some breaking Bucks news, as they signed veteran forward Taurean Prince to help filling out their roster around the margins. Jason Wilde joins Jim Rutledge and Molly Brown to be held accountable for his co-host, Mark Tauscher, misquoting Rutledge & Hamilton's poll question from yesterday's show. Jim points out the difference between asking Packers fans if they're more EXCITED, not more INTRIGUED, by Jordan Love's second season as the starting QB or the Jeff Hafley's first season as defensive coordinator. Molly also asks Jason about running back Josh Jacobs' comments about his new role in Green Bay's offense and that Jordan Love is primed to be the NFL's next superstar. Jason says why he once again feels like Packers fans are getting a little TOO optimistic about Jordan Love, and brings up Bryan Bulaga's uncertainty about how Jacobs will work in this offense compared to the receiving threat that Aaron Jones played as a running back. Jim also asks Jason to chime in on why soccer hasn't caught on in the US like some have said it would over the years. This week's Minute to Win It celebrates America's *238th* birthday, as Primetime asks Molly Brown to name the 13 original colonies!

The Lakers, as LeBron James noted before the series against Denver kicked off Saturday with Game 1, will need to play near-flawless basketball to move past the Nuggets into the second round. Fair to say on Saturday they didn't clear the bar in their 114-103 loss.It wasn't all terrible. The Lakers actually led by double digits in the second quarter before Denver came roaring back. Still, LA led by three at the half. But in the second half, the Lakers fell apart offensively. Completely and totally. 43 points just isn't going to get it done. And overall, the offensive effort had too many massive holes. Start with a 6-20, 1-9 night from D'Angelo Russell. But Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura were total non-factors. The Lakers had one bench player (Taurean Prince) score. Even worse, the Lakers only had one bench player shoot. LeBron, while productive overall, was a non-factor in the fourth quarter and turned the ball over seven times. The Lakers were under 28% from 3. Anthony Davis answered the bell with 32/14/5, plus four blocks, and Prince off the bench was a nice boost. Not everything was bad for the Lakers, but Denver is elite, and won't do you any favors to help win games. You have to beat them. If the Lakers are going to have a chance, they have to win Game 2 on Monday. It's hard to see them, or anyone, beating Denver four times in five tries. Thanks to an excellent road trip and a well-timed skid from the Sacramento Kings, the Lakers showed up at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday with a chance to move, however temporarily, into the 8th spot in the Western Conference. That would, however, require a strong effort against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who entered as the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference. So no pushover there. Winner winner, chicken dinner. LA beats the Cavs, 116-97. After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Lakers took control of the game, and after letting Cleveland take the lead in the third following a huge run, the Lakers took it right back and never let the Cavs back into the game. Ultimately, it was one of their better games inside this hot streak, especially on the defensive end. The Lakers were particularly effective against Cleveland's guard combo of Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell, holding them to 36 points on 15-38 shooting. The Lakers, meanwhile, got big performances from Anthony Davis (including six blocks), LeBron James (24/5/12) and a game high 28 from D'Angelo Russell. Taurean Prince, meanwhile, kicked in with 18 off the bench, and Gabe Vincent was +15 in 14 minutes, despite not scoring and only notching a pair of assists. That's because of his defensive work. The Lakers move on now to play Minnesota tomorrow at home. This game will go a long way to determining whether the Lakers can hold onto that 8 spot, or even move up with a huge season-finale upcoming against the Pelicans. Game of the season for the Lakers? That's up for debate and personal taste, but there's no question Tuesday's 128-124 double overtime road win over the Milwaukee Bucks, short LeBron James no less, is on the short list of signature victories this season. What seemingly began as a blowout loss in the making gradually, steadily, and impressively shifted into an absolutely spectacular display of guts and will from, among others, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.AD, who played much of the game on a leg clearly bugging him, wrapped up the night with a monster 34/23/4 block line, including the erasure of a Damian Lillard floater to push the game into 2OT. Austin Reaves began the night shaky, but finished with a 29/14/10 triple-double, highlighted by a few jaw-droppingly deep threes in big moments. D'Lo had a rough night shooting overall, but hit a flurry of threes (five in all) during the second half to provide a big spark of belief, plus 12 dimes against just four turnovers. And Rui had a solid 16 points to go with a career-high fourteen rebounds, critical on a night when someone had to pick up LeBron's slack on the glass.Throw in some big moments from Spencer Dinwiddie and Taurean Prince, plus Darvin's decision to push for a win when sitting the starters ahead of tonight's game in Memphis would have been perfectly sensible, and you had all the makings of a victory that reminds fans that, when this team really wants it, they can be a very tough out. One figured this would be a high-scoring night, given how the Indiana Pacers have arguably the best offensive team in the NBA all season, the Lakers have morphed over the course of the year into a juggernaut in their own right, and neither team should brag about their defenses of late. Yes, the Lakers were without D'Angelo Russell, but still, there's plenty of firepower to go around in L.A. But even by those standards, this 150-145 Lakers win was an insane shootout. Four Lakers with 25+ points. 26 for Spencer Dinwiddie, starting in D'Lo's spot and having the best game of his purple and gold tenure. (On the heels of what had been his best L.A. game Friday against the Sixers.) 36 points for Anthony Davis, who made 15 of 21 shots and pulled down 16 rebounds just for fun. Even the Lakers' typically barren bench, led by Taurean Prince's 14 points, was respectably prolific. Of course, the Pacers got in on the act as well, with Pascal Siakam exploding for 27 second-half points (36 in all), Myles Turner chipping in 20 and the team going 50 percent from distance. Indiana also outscored the Lakers 46-34 in the fourth quarter, including a late flurry of threes to make things very tense down the stretch. (To say the Lakers' late fourth quarter pick-and-roll defense got scrambled would be a grand understatement.) But in the end, the Lakers pulled off the victory, which combined with a Warriors loss, has them sitting at the nine seed 2.5 games ahead of Golden State, and 2.5 behind Dallas/Sacto. A challenging but still winnable road trip awaits, and it would be nice to see the Lakers really put away a quality opponent. But the bottom line is they're stacking wins of late, and at least giving themselves a shot at climbing the standings as the season reaches its end. For about six minutes Monday night at the Crypt, it looked like the Lakers were in a world of trouble, hosting the West-best Oklahoma City Thunder. But then they stopped turning the ball over (or at least not as much), started hitting some shots, moving the ball, and most importantly, playing some high level defense. By the 1:32 mark of the first quarter, the game was tied, and from there the Lakers never trailed. By halftime, they were up nine. After the break, they won the third quarter by eight, and at one point in the fourth led by 25. Anthony Davis bounced back with a dominant game inside, against a team that has struggled to contain him all year. But much of LA's offensive production seemed to come from crazy stuff happening, and the Davis managing to clean it up underneath. He finished with 24 points, including 11 trips to the line, plus 12 rebounds and three blocks. D'Angelo Russell had five 3-pointers, Austin Reaves had four in five tries, and played some very impressive defense on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. LeBron James had 11 rebounds and eight assists. And finally some bench production again, as Taurean Prince chipped in with 14. But the story of this one was defense. The Lakers held the Thunder to under 40% from the floor, and even if OKC was missing some chippies, overall the Lakers really elevated what they were doing, and put a tremendous amount of pressure on the Thunder after those first few minutes. This was a very meaningful win for the Lakers, who need to rack up some wins against the league's best teams if they want to move up in the West. And, to be honest, they probably need these wins to keep showing themselves what's still possible this year. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Slow start, strong finish as the Lakers knock off OKC. SEGMENT 2: Anthony Davis bounces back big, plays a very physical game Monday night. The Lakers, don't look now, have started to put some wins together. Seven of 10 now, factoring in Tuesday's 125-111 win over the Pistons at the Crypt. The starting lineup that swapped Rui Hachimua for Taurean Prince, has won five straight. The offense is flying around, the passing has elevated and turnovers are trending in the right direction. So with that in mind, and with the addition of Spencer Dinwiddie (who made his Lakers debut Tuesday), is there reason to crank up the optimism around the squad? Especially if Dinwiddie plays like he did in Dallas, there's every reason to believe he'll make a significant difference for a squad that needs more ball handling. Joining in to break it all down is Darian Vaziri, host of Locked On Clippers and the DimeDropper empire (search it out on YouTube). What accounts for the turnaround? Is it important for the Lakers to lean into a new identity, built more around big offense than lockdown defense? What kind of impact will Dinwiddie have, particularly as the Western Conference gets rougher and rougher. The Lakers, at 7-3 over their last 10, have played well but not actually gained any real ground in the conference. Meanwhile, there seems to be two tiers of squads. But even if one team has a gaudy record, do they have a kryptonite a little lower in the standings? It's a very, very busy week in the NBA with the trade deadline coming up on the 8th. And, of course, that means the Lakers tied to any available player on the market, because that's how this works. But while before the chatter was built mostly around Atlanta guard Dejounte Murray, the Lakers now have to fill a massive hole left by the injury to Jarred Vanderbilt. The Lakers now have a gaping hole to fill, in addition to any improvements they want to make in the backcourt, or anywhere else. And the stuff they have available doesn't change. It's one pick, it's D'Angelo Russell, it's (maybe) Rui Hachimura and an injured Gabe Vincent, plus whatever appeal guys like Max Christie and Jalen Hood-Schifino might have. So which holes do they try to fill? Do they keep more assets for this summer, roll the dice on this year and hope for the best? It's not an easy time to be Rob Pelinka. Meanwhile, one of the guys on the list of potential trade assets—Christie—was also one of their most impactful players in Saturday's win over the Knicks. Will Darvin Ham continue leaning heavily into the youngster for his defensive versatility (as well as some outside shooting) with Vanderbilt and Cam Reddish unavailable? Does the (new again) starting lineup mean that Rui Hachimura finally gets the PT Lakers fans have been clamoring for? Saturday it made sense to play Taurean Prince... but that's not going to be the case every game. Finally, what exactly was LeBron talking about with the hourglass emoji last week? And has he made any decisions around his player option for next year? The answer to the latter is no, and the former is "I'm not telling." Or so it was ahead of the game Saturday night. So anything to read into either? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers have a major hole to fill with Jarred Vanderbilt on the shelf. SEGMENT 2: How should the Lakers try to address their shortcomings at the deadline. How do they prioritize? SEGMENT 3: LeBron says a lot by saying very little. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Thursday in Boston, the Lakers shocked the NBA world, beating the Celtics without LeBron James or Anthony Davis, and with Jarred Vanderbilt missing the second half with a foot injury. Saturday in New York, they had Davis and LeBron back (Vando will miss weeks, at least), facing a Knicks squad down Julius Randle and OG Onunoby, but nonetheless on a nine game win streak. It was a grind and it wasn't necessarily easy, but the Lakers played with the same level of defensive intensity and held New York to only 17 points in the fourth quarter, and pulled away to win TK-TK. In only one quarter did the Lakers surrender more than 27 points. In today's NBA, that's quality work. Darvin Ham, changed things up again in the lineup, starting Rui Hachimura to play large. Still, Taurean Prince played a ton of minutes in this one, related to where he slots defensively (and a solid 16 points on 6-10 from the floor). He was a contributor, as were LeBron (24/5/5/2/1), Austin Reaves (22 points, seven dimes, one TO) and and Max Christie (only six points, but played huge minutes defensively down the stretch). But it was Davis, who finished with only 12 points, that really led LA's effort. His defensive presence was incredible, not just on the glass (18 rebounds) but also at the rim (four blocks). With a win Monday in Charlotte, the Lakers can finish a road trip in a strong way after what was unquestionably a disastrous start. The Lakers picked up a massive win in New York over the Knicks on Saturday night to bring their record above .500. LA really turned it up on the defensive end of the floor in the 4th quarter, shutting down the Knicks' offense and pulling ahead for the win. Lakers coach Darvin Ham changed the starting lineup again, inserting Rui Hachimura in place of Taurean Prince and made a number of changes mid-game. The Lakers were walloped in Houston Monday, and had to turn around Tuesday to play the Hawks in Atlanta. This time, though, they'd take the floor without Anthony Davis, who had to miss the game after aggravating his hip/groin injury. It didn't go well. The Lakers were dominated by the Hawks, 138-122, a score that doesn't really capture how Atlanta controlled the game after the first seven minutes or so of the game. In the wake of Saturday's ultra-intense, ultra-exciting double OT win over Golden State in San Francisco, there was plenty to discuss. The superlative performances of LeBron James and Stephon Curry. The continued excellent play, including one of the most shockingly ballsy 3-pointers in recent history, from D'Angelo Russell. And, of course, the incredible shot in the arm provided by Jarred Vanderbilt. But most prominent among Lakers fans was probably the combinations in which all of those players were used. Darvin Ham finally seemed to lean into last year's post-deadline starting lineup. The one that helped propel the Lakers to a Western Conference Finals appearance, and that (until Thursday against Chicago ) had not, for all intents and purposes played together. That changed Saturday, and the Lakers clearly benefitted from the change. On the season, in very limited minutes, that lineup of LeBron and Anthony Davis, plus Russell, Reaves and Jarred Vanderbilt, is a plus-30 net rating in 30 minutes on the court. Last year, this group was well above water, too. Would Ham change the starting lineup in the face of this success, and send Taurean Prince to the bench? Failing that, is he willing to start decreasing Prince's minutes in an effort to bump an obviously effective and very much in the groove Vando?Meanwhile, D'Angelo Russell is making Rob Pelinka's job much more complicated.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Holy bleep, Saturday was a fun game.SEGMENT 2: Has Darvin Ham finally discovered (rediscovered, really) his "lineup of death?"SEGMENT 3: The Lakers have a hard choice to make about D'Angelo Russell, who continues to play well.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn Jobs helps you find the qualified candidates you want to talk to, faster. One reason the Lakers have managed to play more competitively over the last few games, including wins in four of six, is the improved play of D'Angelo Russell, who looks a lot more like the guy who was the Lakers best player not named Anthony or LeBron for the first month of the season. Russell's 29 points against Dallas on Wednesday was a reminder that whether you see him as the team's third best player, fourth best, or maybe even something after that, he's got certain skills that aren't easily replicated around the roster. He's the most likely player outside the stars to pop off for 30 points, for example. He's also the best non-LeBron organizer and facilitator on the squad. His point guard skills aren't replicated by Austin Reaves, for examples. So when he plays well, the Lakers look like a different team. When he plays well AND LeBron and AD are on? The Lakers can appear genuinely dangerous. He is, and this is just the reality of it, the most likely player on the roster to be used as trade bait. But it means the Lakers really need to consider carefully what they're getting back should they decide to make a move. Meanwhile, Darvin Ham seems to have settled on the nine guys he wants to give playing time to in a coherent rotation, with Cam Reddish and Gabe Vincent out, and Jaxson Hayes (rightly) deemed unplayable. But what will that look like when Reddish is available to play? And how does this relative health impact the guy many Lakers fans love to hate, Taurean Prince? Finally, starting tonight against Brooklyn, the Lakers have a run of winnable games between now and the February 8th trade deadline. Of the 10 between now and then, only three come against high end teams (the Clippers, Boston and New York). Having not capitalized on the bulk of their run of home games, the Lakers really, really need to make hay now, both to make up ground in the Western Conference and to settle questions ahead of the deadline. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: D'Angelo Russell, X-factor. SEGMENT 2: The rotation is set now, right? SEGMENT 3: Gotta make some waves in a good stretch of schedule. The Lakers badly needed a win after absorbing a few tough losses, and Monday night played one of their better games of the season, beating Oklahoma City 112-105. Anthony Davis (27/15/5) and LeBron James (25/6/5) led a balanced and efficient Lakers attack (six players in double figures, 44-84 from the floor). But what got people's attention first and foremost? Another new lineup for the Lakers. Darvin Ham, seeking to put as much playmaking around James and Davis, went with D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves in the starting lineup with Taurean Prince. The returns were solid, for sure, and for one night at least this group offered the high level of offense Ham wanted without compromising (or being compromised) defensively. They held Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to a very manageable 9-19 from the floor, and ROY candidate Chet Holmgren was in foul trouble all night, notching only nine points. Ham said this would be the lineup for a while going forward, indicating a pivot for the team (and an acknowledgement that Cam Reddish could be out a while). The Lakers, for a team that has struggled a lot, has also now notched a pretty good assortment of wins over good teams. They don't have enough of them, but there's enough proof in the game calendar that the Lakers can beat anyone in the league. Often enough? In four of seven games? A lot is left to be seen, but for one night at least, the Lakers got a little mojo back. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers get a huge win over Oklahoma City. The Lakers were at a serious crossroads Sunday night at the Crypt, on a four game losing streak and Darvin Ham squarely in the crosshairs for angry Lakers fans and potentially Lakers management as well. They needed to make a statement, and after a scarily slow start (and with a scary finish) they did, winning 106-103 to quiet the noise... for a night at least. The Lakers welcomed D'Angelo Russell back to the lineup, which provided a boost, giving the Lakers another ballhandler, perimeter presence and shot creator. He took a minute to get going, but after a slow start finished with 13 points and six assists. LeBron James posted a few highlight reel plays en route to 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Anthony Davis had 22/10, and Taurean Prince hit three triples. The Lakers bench was strong, with Christian Wood continuing his resurgence, and Max Christie providing strong minutes en route to a team leading +10 plus/minus. But the big thing was the defense, holding the Clippers to under 40% from the floor and playing a very physical style throughout the game. It wasn't fancy, it was rarely pretty, but they got it done. Ham's seat got a little less hot (at least until Tuesday) and hopefully the Lakers can establish a little momentum over the rest of this home-heavy stretch. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers get a critical win over the Clippers. SEGMENT 2: Getting Russell back makes a big difference. SEGMENT 3: Darvin's seat gets (slightly) cooler. The Lakers opened January with a stretch of 11 games in LA in their first 12, sitting at 17-17 and needing to make some noise. The only noise they made Wednesday against Miami was a sad trombone. Lakers lose 110-96 in a genuinely disgusting performance. Remove Anthony Davis (29/17/6/3/5, as he continues to put up MVP caliber numbers, and Austin Reaves, who at the least was playing hard despite poor outside shooting, and it's hard to find another Laker who distinguished himself. (Christian Wood - 13/8/3 on 5-10 shooting - was decent.) But LeBron James? Horribly inefficient offensively, missing 12 of his 18 shots and not earning a single free throw, to go along with ineffectual defense and some bad TOs. He is reportedly battling illness, but this night it was his on court production that was under the weather. Cam Reddish and Taurean Prince combined for 0 points in 48 minutes. Zero. As a team, the Lakers were 4-30 from 3-point range. They turned the ball over 10 times... in the first quarter (21 overall). Where do they go from here? Maybe things turn if/when players return (no Russell, Hachimura or Vincent on Wednesday). But the level of play goes beyond just missing players. As Davis said after the game, they have to figure it out, sooner rather than later, and if they can't it's going to get ugly fast. Or uglier, at least. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Among the worst losses in recent Lakers history. How did it happen? SEGMENT 2: Reaves starts... and the results are basically the same? The Lakers hoped to translate a great win on Saturday in Oklahoma City into success on Christmas at home against the Celtics. It didn't happen. The Lakers—you may have heard this before—got off to a very slow start, as the new starting lineup debuted against the Thunder could neither buy a bucket nor prevent one. That's not a good formula against one of the elite teams in the NBA. The Lakers would eventually get their act together, dominating the second quarter, before slowly losing control over the course of the second half. All five Boston starters had at least 18 points, and Kristaps Porzingis was particularly dominant, scoring 28 points while grabbing 11 boards and blocking a pair of shots. The Lakers, on the other hand, got a spectacular performance from Anthony Davis (40 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and got to the line 10 times. Everyone else? Spotty results. Taurean Prince continues to shoot well, making 5 of his 12 3-point attempts. But there just wasn't enough production everywhere else, particularly as the Lakers allowed Boston to parade to the line in the third, blunting any momentum they tried to create. After, Darvin Ham noted that while he believes they have the talent to compete with anyone, for that to happen they must pay attention to, and deliver on, the details. They can't have moments where they're beaten down the floor in transition, or make a sloppy pass, or a halfhearted screen. The level of execution must be high. That's true of most teams, but as the margin for error shrinks. it tends to become that much more true. After the game, the Lakers announced that guard Gabe Vincent will need surgery in his injured knee, and likely miss six to eight weeks. That brings clarity to the rotation, but has short and long terms ramifications. So now the Lakers get a couple badly needed days off before taking the floor again Thursday at home against the Hornets. Then it's a couple more roadies before the schedule gets more home friendly in January. Certainly feels like the Lakers could use a turn of the calendar.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose on Christmas Day, as the new lineup isn't quite as successful.SEGMENT 2: Darvin wants more attention to the details.SEGMENT 3: Is the new lineup worth keeping?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check.
