Guest: Ashley Howard, La Salle Basketball Head CoachIn this week's coaching conversation, La Salle head coach Ashley Howard joins the podcast to discuss coaching offense with concepts instead of plays. Ashley Howard has the storied La Salle University men's basketball program on an upward trajectory heading into his third season as head coach in 2020. The Explorers put together their first winning season since the 2016-17 season and had a number of noteworthy highlights. Getting key performances from different players each night, La Salle defeated three opponents in three days to win the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida. Each of those three teams that the Explorers beat would go on to win at least 20 games -- South Alabama (20), Murray State (23), and Wright State (25). Over two-plus years, Howard has revamped the La Salle roster by focusing on talented student-athletes from the East Coast. Nine players hail from within a one-hour radius of La Salle's campus, with three more calling the nation's capital of Washington, D.C. home. Prior to his arrival at La Salle, Howard spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova, helping the Wildcats to a pair of National Championships. During his time with the Wildcats, Howard was involved in all aspects of the program including on-court teaching, player development, and recruiting. He was instrumental in helping the team set a new NCAA record for the most wins in a four-year span. The Philadelphia native recruited future NBA Draft Picks Mikal Bridges (10th Overall, Phoenix Suns), Jalen Brunson (33rd Overall, Dallas Mavericks), Donte DiVincenzo (17th Overall, Milwaukee Bucks), and Omari Spellman (30th Overall, Atlanta Hawks). He was also a member of the coaching staff that developed Josh Hart into the National Player of the Year in 2016 and a first-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2016 NBA Draft. Prior to Villanova, Howard accrued a decade's worth of college coaching experience at three different stops. He began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Drexel University, in 2002 after an injury cut short his playing career for the Dragons. In 2004, following graduation, Howard was hired as an assistant coach at La Salle by Dr. John Giannini. He spent four years with the Explorers before returning to Drexel in 2008 as an assistant coach to James "Bruiser" Flint. He was part of a staff that led the Dragons to consecutive 20-win seasons, including a school record of 29 victories in 2011-12. In 2012-13, Howard served as an assistant on Chris Mack's staff at Xavier University before landing back in his hometown with Villanova.Breakdown1:00 - Influence of Villanova on his Coaching Philosophy5:00 - Playing Out Concepts10:00 - Biggest Challenges Playing with Concepts12:00 - Driving Space and Drive Decision15:00 - Specific Cues19:00 - Importance of Upper Year Players23:00 - Nash25:00 - Cues on Cutting on a Drive28:00 - Teaching the Weak Side31:00 - Small Ball Concept33:00 - Concept of Jumpstart and Spacing36:00 - Practice with Video39:00 - One-on-One Concept41:00 - Modern Analytics and Offensive Mentality44:00 - Importance of Two-Way teaching46:00 - Keeping the Opponents Off-Balance50:00 - Modern Defensive System51:00 - Shot fake53:00 - The Atlantic 1055:00 - ConclusionAshley Howard’s Bio:Website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Howard_(basketball)Basketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionBetOnline Website:Website: www.betonline.agBest in the West Video SeriesBest in the West Website: http://bestinthewestclinic.com/
Let's take stock of the Andrew Wiggins-D'Angelo Russell trade and regrade it one year after it came together. On today's pod, we go into the details of that deal, including: the draft pick compensation; Wiggins' fit in Golden State; DLo's fit in Minnesota; the Omari Spellman and Jacob Evans luxury tax wrinkle. What was the overall cost to swap out Wiggins for Russell. We also get into a few observations from the loss in Golden State, including: how both Anthony Edwards and James Wiseman are now both coming off of the bench; the impact on the Wolves' offense of not having Rubio being an at-rim scorer; why Jordan McLaughlin might not be the Timberwolves' best point guard but why he fits the Timberwolves system best.

Expectations have changed dramatically for the Golden State Warriors this season, so we checked in with our friend Jannelle Moore of goldenstateofmind.com to compare notes about surviving a down season. We learn about how the Warriors are juggling 45-day contracts and how being hard capped lead to letting Marquese Chriss go. (Since we recorded, Chriss himself was signed to a 45-day contract.) Talking to her was illuminating because even though the Trail Blazers are having a tough year, at least they are not hard-capped, and they have some flexibility. We are also thankful that the coaching staff has always had a strong focus on development. Listen to the latest episode of the WHAT podcast to hear all of this plus our favorite NBA family dynasties, NBA All Star votes, and more Olympic basketball history! Highlights 3:00 Which NBA family dynasty is your favorite? Some of our favorites are the Millers, the McGees, the Currys and the Grants. 7:30 How has watching the Warriors changed for Jannelle? 13:00 Is there a particular position where they are thin? They have enough guards, at least, they are not looking to replace the guards because Stephan Curry and Klay Thompson will be back. They are really suffering at center. Jannelle is not a fan of Willie Cauley-Stein. 15:15 How are Golden State fans doing? Mostly they are treating this season as a gap year. A lot of people have embraced the tank. Jannelle is not there yet and is disappointed that they don’t seem like they are fighting at the end of games. Tanking doesn’t seem like a good strategy because they need a wing or a big but most of the upcoming draft seems to be guards. 18:00 How does she watch the teams knowing that it might be so different from next year? 20:50 We make a solid plea for Jannelle to be a Blazer fan for this season while she’s waiting for Curry to recover. 24:15 Players to watch? Omari Spellman. He’s fought a lot to become a good player. He is earning playing time after really hard work. Eric Paschal has been good but lately Kerr hasn’t been playing him much. Warriors don’t seem to be doing great with development this year. They haven’t needed to be so much recently. Development is not something they have had to focus on in the past several years, at least they didn’t seem to. 30:00 All Star votes. Who are we voting for this year? Cassidy goes in hard on “stupid fan voting”. 36:00 How about a 1v1 competition at All Star? Think of the rivalries that would ensue! 42:00 Olympic Basketball Moments: 1936 Olympics, the first year Basketball was officially a sport. It was a pretty big disaster. We don’t cover every pick but do contrast some interest players drafted in stretches. We cover the mid to late lottery guards (Collin Sexton, Kevin Knox, Shai Gilgus-Alexander and Jerome Robinson). We know we cheated a bit by including Know in there but it seemed appropriate to contrast those players. We needed to use the 48-hour rule and then some to calm down and figure out why the Philadelphia 76ers did what they did. Aside from that it was a big night for the Villanova Basketball program, as for the first time ever, four Wildcats went in a single NBA Draft. Also, three went in the first round alone, another milestone for the program. Mikal Bridges is now on the Phoenix Suns. Donte DiVincenzo is taking his talents to the Milwaukee Bucks. Omari Spellman sneaked in at the end of the first round, going 30th overall to the Atlanta Hawks. Meanwhile, Jalen Brunson went to the Dallas Mavericks at 33rd. Learn more about your ad choices. They worked through all the theories on Bryan Colangelo's inability to control his family's social media activity as well as what Tyus Battle's return means, how much the Big Ten hierarchy changed in the last 24 hours and why we have never given Villanova enough credit for just how good they were. The rundown:OPEN: Burner accounts and Syracuse basketball10:00: How will these decisions affect Kentucky’s team?15:10: Kevin Huerter is gone and that’s a brutal blow for Maryland.19:30: Everyone else in the Big Ten got good news.24:50: Nevada is loaded with the Martin twins back in the mix. 29:05: Villanova theories, why they were underrated and what their prospects are without Donte DiVincenzo and Omari Spellman.
We're coming out of hiatus to discuss Wednesday, which was the deadline for student-athletes to decide on whether or not they will be committing to the NBA Draft. While the Villanova Wildcats already had Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges set on going, Donte DiVincenzo and Omari Spellman took their time. It turns out that the Wildcats will now have four players entering this year's draft and possibly have all four go in the first round. What impact does this have on the program? What will the starting five look like this season? Did we get too comfortable with having Villanova players typically stay for three to four years? Learn more about your ad choices.
