Today's guest is Brittain Ashford, executive director of the Music Publishers Association, a trade organization focused on education and advocacy of issues pertaining to music publishing and print music. Their website, mpa.org has a wealth of free information and resources pertaining to copyright as well as information about their partnerships with other music organizations. We had a great conversation about the work of the MPA, the things self publishers need to know about copyright, and the massive debt we, as a society, owe to the player piano. CONTENT WARNING: Strong language and thematic elements. Twenty years after an apocalyptic storm left the world in ruins, a mysterious scientist wanders into the small settlement of Holy Cross, Alaska. There he finds a reluctant ally in a brilliant young tavern-girl, but finds that friendship tested when the truth about who he is — and what he's done — comes out. This story features Bohdi Silva as Tony, Michael Dostrow as Doc, Lesley-Anne Hoxie as Harper, Charles Scatolini as Howell, Jesse Steele as Teagan, Jeff Frome as Bryon, with Marcy Murray and Juliana Olinka Jones as the scientists. Original music was composed by Jesse Haugen (www.notemuse.com) with violin solos by Hector Gonzales, the Homestead on the Corner theme was composed by Lauren Baker, and the closing credits were "Good for Goodness" by Brittain Ashford (www.brittainashford.com). Brittain Ashford of "Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812" talks her upcoming album "Drama Club," which reinvents classic showtunes by stripping them down and excavating hidden darkness within.
Welcome back listeners, as we take a troika ride to the past to 19th century Russia, where everyone's got nine different names in Dave Malloy's take on the Russian literary paperweight "War & Peace." His electropop opera, "Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812," follows the young Natasha fumbling her way into Moscow high society, while there's a war going on out there somewhere ... and what about Pierre? Join us as we try to unpack the story of this ambitious stage adaptation, its incredible diversity of music and casting, and its own meteoric rise to Broadway — and how it burned out so quickly. It's no secret that I'm OBSESSED with "Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812"--I truly think it is one of the most powerful and affecting pieces of theater I've ever experienced. The first time I saw the show, I knew we had to have Brittain Ashford, who plays Sonya, on the podcast ASAP. Brittain has been with the show from the earliest readings and has played Sonya in all of the show's incarnations. In the episode we find out where she came from, how she met the show's creator Dave Malloy, and how it is to be making her Broadway debut in such an unusual and magnificent work.
Composer Dave Malloy and cast members Lucas Steele and Brittain Ashford join Rebecca to discuss their inventive new musical. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
