Beyond the Bottle #2: - Welcoming the New Year Sober

It is with great relief I can share with you my continued sobriety over what has been a very tempting Christmas and New Year period. So far I have stayed strong, replacing my normal alcohol beverage of choice (VB - full strength) with Carlton Zero which, as the label suggests contains no alcohol. And being able to have a beer with family and friends has made this process a lot easier. Follow my journey living with mental illness and the hard-fought lessons learned along the way. Lived experience is the driving force of this podcast, and through this lens, my stories are told. This is a raw, honest, and authentic account of how various psychological disorders have shaped my past, and continue to influence my future. Please support me and the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/elliotwaters

What a controversial episode this is...first of all, all these beers are 0.5% ABV. Yep you read that right, we've done a couple of mini-eps before, but this is our first ever full length low-alcohol episode! But as we talk about in this episode, this segment of the market is booming, so we thought we'd better jump on the bandwagon too...   Another big topic in this ep is that this is the second last episode of Aussie Beer Explorers!!! Maybe not forever, we're not sure yet, but at least for a little while we'll be giving your ears a rest. But feel free to stay subscribed, that way you'll be the first to hear if/when we decide to get going again.   So for our penultimate episode we had a go at 8 low-alcohol beers from around the country...and as a special treat for our long-time listeners we even brought back our favourite segment - bogan vs boutique! (Let's face it, Carlton Zero never stood a chance!).   Tropical XPA - Nort Beer https://nort.beer/ Sidewinder XPA Deluxe - Brick Lane https://bricklanebrewing.com/ Mind Your Head Non-alc XPA - Hop Nation https://hopnation.com.au/ Mornington Free Non-alc Pale Ale - Mornington Peninsula Brewery https://mpbrew.com.au/ Quiet XPA - Heaps Normal https://heapsnormal.com/ Free Time Alcohol Free Pale Ale - Bridge Road Brewers https://bridgeroadbrewers.com.au/ New World IPA - UpFlow Brewing https://www.upflowbrewing.com.au/ Poolside DDH IPA - Big Drop Brewing Co https://au.bigdropbrew.com/   instagram.com/aussiebeerexplorers facebook.com/aussiebeerexplorers twitter.com/Ozbeerexplorers aussiebeerexplorers@gmail.com aussiebeerexplorers.com

This non alcoholic beer craze seems to be gaining momentum. Carlton Zero is being seen in the AFL as a major sponsor, Heineken is all over our TV screens and in Europe it seems that some soccer stadiums are going dry and punters will be watch the ball go in to the back of the auld onion bag while sipping on a beer that won't make them bash on with their opposing supporters. As Bob Dylan once said, times they are a changing. In Australia, the big boys are leading the charge with Non-Alc options under both Domestic and International brands. Not wanting to leave it all to the big boys, we are also starting to see craft beer lovers have options as well. One such option is Upflow Brewing, under the guidance of Slow Beer's Chris Menichelli. It was going to take a lot of convincing for me to get on board the Non-Alc train, so I bought myself a four ack and sat down for a really interesting chat with Chris.Buy Upflow beers hereWant to help spread the craft beer gospel?Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTubeRate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottomOr Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast player

This week on Brews News Week Matt flies solo but discusses the news of the week with the people making news. First up, he chats with Anton Szpitalak from Tribe Brewing about Tribe's  announcement this week that it has signed an agreement to brew Pabst Blue Ribbon. Anton and his family formed Brewpack in 2012 when they acquired the assets of collapsed contractor Australian Independent Brewers. Later the business added its proprietary brand Stockade and this year changed its name to Tribe when it took on investment from Melbourne-based private equity firm Advent Partners to fund its current expansion plans. And Pabst Blue Ribbon is a venerable old beer brand that has been resurrected as an ironic alternative to the US's mainstream staples. The brand is owned by a Eugene Kashper and private equity investor TSG Partners, which also happens to own 23% of Scottish brewery BrewDog. The Pabst brand, which is currently contract brewed by SAB Miller in the US, won Large Brewing Company of the Year at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival and took gold for best American-style lager. It's an interesting move for Tribe and this is a robust chat with Anton. Then we look at alcohol free beer as this week CUB announced it had launched Carlton Zero, an a beer with functionally no alcohol. While Australia is arguably the king of mid-strength beer, and zero alcohol beers are a growing trend in Europe, the US and Canada, Matt is not convinced that there is the market for them in Australia.   We discuss the issue with CUB beverage innovation brewer Scott Vincent who worked on the development of the beer to learn about how a non alcohol beer is made while retaining flavour, and then we chat with Tim Ovadia, CUB's Director Of Classic Brands & Local Premium about why they think there's a market for it at all. This show is a little different from normal, but this is also why we love the conversation you can have over a podcast rather than the printed news story. Enjoy the brews news of the week.
