Until the start of 2024 I had never heard of French & Jupps, the UK's oldest continuously operating maltster, established in 1689. When I was offered to visit by my friend Jonathan Mitchell, who distributes their malt via his Northern Ireland-based company Get ‘Er Brewed, I just had to tag along. Malt has always been central to both my enjoyment and fascination with beer, and is my favourite ingredient. You can probably say that water is more important, and hops are more exciting (sorry, yeast) but it's malt that fuels my curiosity the most. Malt forms not only an important intersection between the technical side of brewing, and the creative, flavour-driven element, but for me also provides the most tangible connection to its agriculture – the fact that beer is a product of the land first, and the factory second.Located a 20-minute train ride from Tottenham Hale station in North London, French & Jupps is located in the picturesque town of Stanstead Abbotts, next to the River Lea. Although by no-means small, it's not quite as gargantuan as other maltings in the UK, such as those operated by Crisp, Simpsons, or Bairds. That's in part because they don't produce base malts, instead focusing exclusively on crystal, roasted and what's known as patent malt – the latter so-called because historically a permit was required to authorise its manufacture. French & Jupps produces everything from crystal malts – designed to add sweetness and body – to patent malts that can imbue beer with everything from notes of chocolate and coffee, to bitterness and astringency. You might not have heard of them as a maltster before, but you have almost certainly tasted their malt in beers such as Harvey's Mild, or Shepherd Neame Christmas Ale. But there's another reason you might not have heard of them, and that's because their product was, until recently, distributed via other maltsters, and often re-bagged so none of their branding was present. This is, in part, where managing director Paul King comes in. Joining the company just over four years ago, Paul has had an illustrious career in brewing, holding positions at Diageo, SAB Miller and Anheauser Busch, in roles that have seen him based in Japan, South Africa and the USA. Now, under his stewardship, French & Jupps are beginning to take a more prominent role in their own distribution, but also starting to tell their own, fascinating story in greater detail. I'm pleased to tell you I'm working on a written companion to this interview with Paul that will fill in the details of this maltster's history, while also explaining a bit more about roasted malt on a technical level, and how it's used to make certain beers taste and feel the way they do. Until then, please enjoy this delightful conversation with one of the most interesting people in the beer industry I've had the pleasure of meeting. It's about malt, yes, but also about understanding the vital role it plays in the beer we drink. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. Do you want to create a successful team? Then you should start a workplace choir, share a spicy group meal before a difficult meeting and take up pickleball. These are some of the tricks proposed by the guests on this episode of Management Today's Leadership Lessons. Robin Dunbar, University of Oxford's emeritus professor of evolutionary psychology, and the co-founders of leadership development consultancy Thompson Harrison Tracey Camilleri and Samantha Rockey have written a book called The Social Brain, which delves into the psychology of successful groups. In this episode, Dunbar explains his high-profile research on the impact of group size on human brains. His famous ‘Dunbar's Number' theory argues that humans can only manage a maximum of 150 relationships. He has also identified a series of smaller layers in social networks that will make you look at team dynamics differently. Rockey, who was the global head of leadership development at FTSE 100 company SABMiller (now AB InBev), translates his research into a business context, with clear implications for leaders. Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Asahi Europe & International, “Drahus” (as she is known to friends) shares with us the unique North Star principles that drive one of the world's largest alcoholic and non-alcoholic beer companies, with 19 breweries exporting to 90 markets globally. You will be intrigued to learn about the meaning, power and intentionality behind Asahi's emphasis on four simple words: “Let's have a beer.” It's about bringing awareness and building community – person to person – as the foundation to individual wellness and a sustainable “human-environmental ecosystem.” For Drahus, the first step is the critical one: Pause. Reflect on the talent, passion and ultimate purpose you bring, as well as the legacy you wish to leave. Her values-driven vision has shaped Prague-based Asahi's workplace culture and brought clarity to the company's mission statement. “We have all these goals,” says Drahus, “but to really bring them to life and enjoy the good feeling, we need to be in the present, work together and create connections to step-by-step bring about those long-term dreams.” We are on the road together, folks, and it starts with gratitude! If you'd like to learn more about Chris and his 7:47 Virtual Gratitude Experience or subscribe to our newsletter, please visit this link.Click here to hear more fascinating conversations with Fortune 500 CEOs, professional athletes and entertainerswho have shared their human stories on Gratitude Through Hard Times. KEY TOPICS:If you could thank someone who helped you through some of your darkest hours, who would that be and what were you going through? A mentor with an especially keen way of helping Drahus unhitch from unnecessary catastrophizing and impatience.A Moment of Reflection: About the importance of taking a pause to come into the present, then step into the past through reflection.2030 Legacy of Good: How Drahus and Asahi's company culture have coalesced around a mission based on a multidimensional balance of past, present and future.A Mentor's Advice: About Inner Child work and how it can reintegrate intuition and help return us to the essence of who we are and wish to be.Empathy is Everything: Why Drahus believes that the companies that actually care about the human-environmental ecosystem in which they function will bring profitable solutions to very real pain points. A win-win-win!Embracing Failure: False starts and falling short are part of a holistic learning process.Brand Purpose: About the Asahi brand's commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and community for its tens of millions of consumers.Remarkable Marketing: How Asahi has mounted campaigns that bring people together, helping them feel connected and seen on a personal, human level. The Problem of Loneliness: About the creative ways Asahi's multi-national team is trying to build bridges – old to young, left to right, across lifestyles and geographies.Asahi's Legacy Mission Includes Being Bold:Speak directly and compassionately to tough issues, like mental health.Moving 20% of the corporate portfolio into nonalcoholic beverages.Beer as a vehicle for making meaningful connections.Drahus's Personal Purpose: Making business and environmental growth sustainable. What She's Up To:Coordinating breweries across Europe to build sustainability into their production.Creating a strategy to ensure Asahi becomes carbon neutral.Midwifing a new economic model driven by profitable solutions for all stakeholders – not exclusively profit for shareholders.Action Item: All purpose-filled journeys start with a pause to reflect and re-center on your personal talents, passion and the positive impact you wish to make.Remember: When we are clear about ourselves and our purpose, the work comes into focus – and it becomes easier to shed obligations and distractions that do not serve! Why Do We Do What We Do? From intentionality flows business success and ultimately a healthier, more sustainable world.Parting Thought:Focus on what you want to know say “no” to rather than what's driving you to say “yes.”Resist the shiny things that distract your ego but don't serve your greater purpose or desire to create impact.Meaningful connection is fueled by gratitude – and makes life much, much easier. QUOTABLE“We have all these goals … but to really bring them to life and enjoy the good feeling, we need to be in the present, work together and create connections to step-by-step bring about those long-term dreams.” (Drahus) “You have to have a long-term dream so that you know where you're going.” (Drahus) “Be proud of the past so you can build the confidence and learning, but what is really important is how you bring everything to the present: Your ‘self,' your actions, reflecting on the future and also on the past.” (Drahus) “One of the biggest pain points I see in our world is the loneliness epidemic, the idea that there are a lot of people on this planet who are disconnected or do not feel seen.” (Chris) “Belonging is not about blending in. It's not about meeting people that believe in the same things that you believe in. Belonging is about showing up as you authentically are and being accepted.” (Chris) “My purpose now is really to advocate for a new era for businesses to think about the new economy, where we are moving from maximizing profit for shareholders to bringing profitable solutions for all stakeholders.” (Drahus) “Whether you're an accountant, a lawyer or CEO of a software firm, you can find your purpose and it can be as simple as creating meaningful connections with others.” (Chris) “Years from now – when we've long passed on – maybe someone will look back on our life and say, ‘They made others feel safe, seen and heard.' And if that's your purpose, it's going to be a great legacy – and lead to some good profitable growth!” (Chris) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Click here to listen to episode 225, featuring Geoff McDonald's insights into Mental health and well-being.Listen to Johann Hari's Ted talk, "Everything You Think You Know About Addiction is Wrong." ABOUT OUR GUEST:Drahomíra started her career working for the banking sector in Slovakia. In this episode of Story Talks, we welcome Sona Sherratt of Ashridge where she designs, teaches and client directs on several executive education programmes with clients such as SAB Miller, Swarovski, Heineken, Erste Group Bank, Avis, Beazley Insurance Group and Continental. Sona has designed and delivered senior leadership and general management programs for clients around the world. Sona has co-authored a book entitled ‘50 Biggest Management Dilemmas Solved' which was published by Pearson in January 2014. Together we discussed an area close to her heart, something she's been researching and writing about extensively as part of her doctorate: Psychological Safety. This is a broad word that we broke down in terms of benefits and the consequences of not creating a psychologically safe working environment. We covered a lot of ground, managing to discuss the concept of "quiet quitting", the "big resignation",  the "trust equation", and leadership challenges in a VUCA world (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous.) We break these down and leave you with practical tools to navigate a work place and work force that are increasingly complex and where the stakes couldn't be higher. For instance, you'll learn about lazy questions versus questions that move everyone forward, something that isn't so difficult to implement, and could make a big difference in your day to day interactions. Finally, as you know by now, we always ask our guests about an experience that shaped who they are today, and Sona did not disappoint with an answer that is highly relatable and yet unique in its circumstances. It involves moving from India to the US when she was 10, not speaking the language, and walking on an escalator for the first time. The group of Tongaat shareholders which Woollam represents has also asked the JSE to turn down Tongaat's request today to suspend trading in the company's shares. Woollam, who warned directors of the company about problems long before Tongaat's accounting scandal erupted, is now demanding that the board resign en masse - and suggests a management team it appointed, led by former SABMiller executive Gavin Hudson, fall on their swords. According to an analysis conducted by BSI, ransomware attacks on the supply chain have increased by 66 percent in the last three years, expediting the concern of cybersecurity for private companies.     Considering these attacks range from targeting the sea modality to the trucking modality, tools to combat the threat of cyber-attacks on the supply chain have solidified in the last year, making it a central part of the United States cybersecurity policy.  Mark Brown, Global Managing Director, Digital Trust Consulting Services at BSI joins me in a conversation about all this, along with cybersecurity risk and trends that are emerging along with how we can better prepare, Mark Brown joined BSI in February of 2021 as the Global Managing Director of the Consulting Services, Cyber Security, and Information Security business. There's no doubt about it, flavour is a key factor in the success of any alcohol-free drink, but it's also one of the most difficult areas to master. How do you match the flavour of a single malt whisky, the taste of a session IPA, or the burn of a shot of tequila? Is it even about trying to replicate the taste of alcohol or should efforts be focused on different aspects? In this episode of Table Talk, brought to you in partnership with Kerry, we delve into these questions, as well as the science and the art of flavouring low and no alcohol drinks. We find out just how much work goes into getting the right flavour, including the sniff, taste and session tests. It's no surprise that good quality ingredients are seen as a major factor, but our experts say provenance is becoming increasingly important too, as is sustainability. And find out the one alcoholic drink each of our panel would really love to replicate but without the booze.

Turning RAIN into BEER | Ep. #64

Allow me to introduce you to RainBeer, a Netherland's based organization that coordinates with Dutch breweries to turn excess rain into beer. Freshwater seems abundant, but when accounting for all the water on Earth, it's in limited supply. To put that into perspective, envision this carefully... A giant 97% of Earth's water is in the ocean, so we can't use that. 3 % is fresh water, but even in that 3%, about 2 % is locked in glaciers, ice caps, and groundwater. That leaves about 1 % of the freshwater on Earth that is accessible and usable by humans. Just imagine, if the world's water supply were only 100 litres (26 gallons), our usable water supply of fresh water would be only about 0.003 litres (one-half teaspoon). In actuality, that amounts to an average of 8.4 million litres (2.2 million gallons) for each person on earth. This supply is continually collected, purified, and distributed in the natural hydrologic (water) cycle. Now that we understand the case of fresh water, we can gauge its impact on Beer production. According to Sabmiller‘s report, approximately 102,5 litres of water is consumed for every litre of beer produced… woah just knowing these stats has made the act of bottoms up uncool for me. Similar to Mumbai city, in recent years, Amsterdam too started experiencing heavy rainfall, frequent rainstorms that overwhelm drains, flood streets and seep under doors. But this problem was seen as an opportunity by Joris Hoebe the founder of Rainbeer. To him, every rainfall was equivalent to beer falling from the sky! Amsterdam being a sustainable city, its infrastructure has transformed city spaces into a sponge for excess rainwater. A crucial sponge. Surrounded by water on four sides, this delta city of some 600,000 people can't flush the sudden stormwater away. Instead, it has embarked on a climate change adaptation strategy that turns every conceivable area into water storage. How does it work? The brewery they work with collects the rainwater from the roof of the brewery and with a heavy rain shower, they collect a thousand litres of rainwater. That water goes through the filter and is completely purified by a microfilter, an activated carbon filter, a membrane filter and a UV filter. With this purified rainwater, the brewer brews a delicious fresh rain beer. Rainwater is softer than tap water and contains fewer minerals. These are ideal characteristics for making beer. Some recipes are requiring 30% fewer hops for the same flavour creation compared to tap water. According to experts, the softness also ensures that the bitterness of the beer comes into its own. This week on Brews News Week Matt flies solo but discusses the news of the week with the people making news. First up, he chats with Anton Szpitalak from Tribe Brewing about Tribe's  announcement this week that it has signed an agreement to brew Pabst Blue Ribbon. Anton and his family formed Brewpack in 2012 when they acquired the assets of collapsed contractor Australian Independent Brewers. Later the business added its proprietary brand Stockade and this year changed its name to Tribe when it took on investment from Melbourne-based private equity firm Advent Partners to fund its current expansion plans. And Pabst Blue Ribbon is a venerable old beer brand that has been resurrected as an ironic alternative to the US's mainstream staples. The brand is owned by a Eugene Kashper and private equity investor TSG Partners, which also happens to own 23% of Scottish brewery BrewDog. The Pabst brand, which is currently contract brewed by SAB Miller in the US, won Large Brewing Company of the Year at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival and took gold for best American-style lager. It's an interesting move for Tribe and this is a robust chat with Anton. Then we look at alcohol free beer as this week CUB announced it had launched Carlton Zero, an a beer with functionally no alcohol. While Australia is arguably the king of mid-strength beer, and zero alcohol beers are a growing trend in Europe, the US and Canada, Matt is not convinced that there is the market for them in Australia.   We discuss the issue with CUB beverage innovation brewer Scott Vincent who worked on the development of the beer to learn about how a non alcohol beer is made while retaining flavour, and then we chat with Tim Ovadia, CUB's Director Of Classic Brands & Local Premium about why they think there's a market for it at all. This show is a little different from normal, but this is also why we love the conversation you can have over a podcast rather than the printed news story. Enjoy the brews news of the week.

Simon Shares More highs locally and global for markets. And of course that makes everybody worried and certain we're about to crash. Well we will most definitely crash, just nobody (and I mean nobody) knows when. So as always ignore the doomsayers. Tencent buys a 10% stake in Snap, a clever deal as it gets them into the US market. It also means we now all own some Snap via any Top40 ETF we have with Naspers (JSE code: NPN) in it. Purple Group (JSE code: PPE) results were rough. Ignoring a write down of Real People, GT24/7 made a sliver of profit, Emperor is losing AUM hand over fist while EasyEquities continues loses. With almost 60k users the burn rate for EasyEquities is about R3m a month with revenue of some R800k a month. That's a large gap that needs a lot more customers to close. They do however have the money from Sanlam that tides them over for the next 3 years while they try turn the low cost idea into profits. Steinhoff (JSE code SNH) is back in the bad news on reports that it hid US1billion worth of related party deals. This company has a lot of smoke around for an innocent company. Sasfin (JSE code: SFN) has a price-to-book (PB) of around 1x and that is always a buy signal for the stock. Ungeared and hold until PB is 1.4x or higher, about 12-18 months typically. You'll get NAV uplift, dividends and the price gain above NAV. I have sold my Tongaat (JSE code: TON) shares. The latest update showed that even with returning rain we're not seeing the profits from sugar, so my thesis was right (rain) but with no profit to show for it I bailed. Help us help you, do our six minute user survey. 4 New ETFs from Sygnia. Up coming events; High probability derivative trading Position your portfolio for 2018 * I hold ungeared positions. Too big to work (AKA big deals suck) Brait (JSE code: BAT) has valued their UK New Look business at zero. They paid R37billion just under two years ago. Woolies* (JSE code: WHL) and Famous Brands* (JSE code: FBR) both struggling with big deals and now Firstrand (JSE code: FSR) spending some R20billion buying Aldermore. How many big deal really work? Sure they work eventually, but at what cost and never as management promised. I suspect it has two key problem. Firstly they buyer typically over pays in their eagerness to get the assets, this is especially true when the target is listed and the premium has to be agreed on by shareholders and is hence usually 20%-30% or more. Secondly merging two business is never easy. Some easy wins such as centralised costs like HR can be lowered, but actually extracting value a lot harder. The third of course is the ego of management. Who wants to be boss of some regional business when you can be a global titan over seeing a vast network of losses? My memory says very few ever work very well. Have you got some examples of large deals working? SABMiller worked, BHPBilliton* (JSE code: BIL) worked. Any others? Aquarius Platinum (JSE code: AQP) is being bought by Sibanye Gold (JSE code: SGL) and Implats (JSE Code: IMP) has raised their R4billion just below current share price. But sector remains tough. Robert Satrix Divi+ (JSE code: STXDIV). This ETF selling for under R2.00. My ETF time horizon is long term. The price is so low, I want to buy but think there may be something wrong with this ETF. Would you recommend buying? Is this asking price "normal"? George Today I shorted my first ever position based the news that SAB Miller have rejected the AB Inbev offer. When the news about the initial offer broke, there was that sharp increase in the price. So my (fairly inexperienced) expectation was that with this offer falling through, that the share price would drop down to where it was a month or so ago. This however has not happened, what is the factor that I have not considered? I am not saying that the JSE is broken.
