Alyssa (of The Silver Scream Podcast) joins Caitlin to cover The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster, a 2023 retelling of Frankenstein with poignant, modern social commentary. Nobody asked for two white women to reflect on a movie about Black culture and Black trauma, but we hope to use our voices to lift up this fantastic debut from director Bomani J Story. With allusions to the murders of Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin, affecting depictions of violence against Black communities, and examples of intergenerational trauma, TABGAHM strikes an emotional chord. It also has moments of humor and joy that make it an enjoyable watch (and rewatch). This movie hasn't gotten a lot of press in the horror community, but it should Check it out on Shudder. Tangents for this episode include: book collecting, werewolf movies, our inability to pirate things, 2023 horror releases, tattoos, witches, teleportation, sunrises, moths, and long movies.

Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week we look up in the stars with some Super Bowl counter programing and a spirited talk about the hit show The Orville New Horizons with guests “Lt. Talla Keyali” Jessica Szohr, “Lt. john Marr” J. Lee and producers Brannon Braga and Tom Costantino. Seth MacFarlane's epic space adventure series “The Orville” returns exclusively as a Hulu original series. Set 400 years in the future, “The Orville: New Horizons" finds the crew of the U.S.S. Orville continuing their mission of exploration, as they navigate both the mysteries of the universe and the complexities of their own interpersonal relationships. Joining Szohr and Lee are an ensemble cast includes MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman, and Anne Winters. “The Orville: New Horizons” is produced by 20th Television and Fuzzy Door. The series was created and written by Seth MacFarlane. MacFarlane, Brannon Braga, David A. Goodman, Jon Cassar, Jason Clark and Howard Griffith serve as executive producers. Captured at a San Diego Comic-Con Press Room on Saturday July 23, 2022 in the Aqua Salon at the Hilton Bayfront, join us; Grim Shea, Marke. and Johnny Heck as we dip into our SDCC 22 audio archives yet again for these incredible roundtable interviews. Is The Orville Sci-fi? Is it a sitcom? Is it an adventure series? Is it funny? Is it original? We tackle the big questions about a show we love and avoid talking about football for a stinking minute!
Josh and Adam--both of whom are pretty big fans of Cutty in The Wire--are forced to watch an episode this week where Chad L. Coleman is seen Ray Rice-ing his special lady friend, played by the wonderful Meagan Good. That's not fun to watch, but it's also not fun to watch the SVUs acting against the victim's vehement wishes. It's even less fun to watch after Amaro (who is just back from beating a perp to within an inch of his life) blows up in the opening scene of "Spousal Privilege" (Season 16, Episode 8), making the audience wonder just what qualities in outburst-prone people determine that they get a second chance.Don't worry, the Munchie Boys also use this episode to revel in RedChanIt, take notice of how many of the SVUs were abused as children, and dive deep into the NYC's first black mayor, David Dinkins, who happens to have two lines in this episode. What's the Flashpoint connection? CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES Article: http://comicbook.com/2016/10/05/arrow-easter-eggs-and-dc-comics-references-in-legacy (comicbook.com) Captain Pike - Is that a Star Trek reference? We really can't decide. Either way, per his nametag, that police captain talking to Thea in the opening scene appears to be "Captain Pike," the captain of the USS Enterprise immediately prior to James T. Kirk. Lonnie Machin - A recurring villain from season four of Arrow, Lonnie Machin (the first baddie Oliver fights in season five) is better known to DC Comics fans as the antihero Anarky. Wild Dog - the first new member of Team Arrow version 2.0 was introduced to the audience, in the form of Wild Dog, a hockey mask-wearing, gun-toting vigilante who was inspired by -- and then shot in the kneecap by -- Green Arrow. The character first appeared in Wild Dog #1 in 1987, making him one of the first new superheroes created following Crisis on Infinite Earths. Created by Road to Perdition writer Max Allan Collins, "his super power is guns." Konstantin Kovar - Konstantin Kovar is the father of Leonid Kovar, better known as Red Star. In the comics, Konstantin originally wasn't a villain, but a relatively benign figure: an archaeologist who unearthed a nasty bit of business that gave his son powers. But Red Star himself, a loyal communist in the Soviet era, was occasionally a problem for the other heroes before he turned his life around. Eventually, he would become a bad guy in service of the Soviet Union -- something that might make him an interesting figure going forward in case Anatoly Knyazev's comic book destiny of becoming the cybernetically-enhanced "KGBeast" is to become part of Arrow's story. Tobias Church - Church's nickname is apparently Charon, the ferryman of Hades from Greek mythology. There is a Charon in DC Comics, although he shares basically nothing in common with this version. This is something that will be repeated again in the episode: choosing a historical/mythological meaning instead of a contemporary/comics one. Vigilante - "Mr. Ski Goggles," as Felicity calls him, is actually Vigilante, a DC Comics antihero created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Perez provided the police sketch seen on Felicity's computer screen. Created during Marv Wolfman's time on the New Teen Titans, Vigilante in the comics is a former New York district attorney who's set on the path of justice after hsi family is killed by the mob. The CW describes him similarly: Chase is "Star City's new district attorney and an ally of Mayor Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), who aims to clean up the streets through the legal system." Hub City and Bludhaven - According to Detective Malone, before he made his way to Star City, apparently he haunted Hub City -- the home of The Question -- and Bludhaven, the home of Nightwing. Ross Paints - Is that a little bit of free advertising for comic book artist and painter Alex Ross on the side of the truck Tobias Church and his goons are driving to their crime spree? Bertinelli - Whoever the head of the Bertinelli crime family is now that Helena has killed her father, he makes an appearance here -- only to be immediately killed by Tobias Church's men. When asked about Prometheus, Stephen said, “ Prometheus is a villain that is a byproduct of Oliver Queen being Green Arrow. That's something that you get to do once you're five years into a show. In a lot of ways, I think the most success that we've had with a villain, in my mind, was with Manu Bennett as Deathstroke. One of the reasons is because we got to tell a really personal story. We got to tell the story, sort of the dueling time of their time on the island and then their time in the Starling City at the time. Because Prometheus is a villain of Oliver's creation, so to speak, I feel like it will bring in that personal element as well.” Link:http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/10/05/arrow-stephen-amell-talks-legacy-russia-and-why-prometheus-is-the-right-villain-for-season-5 Spartan's new helmet and a Diggle/Oliver-centric episode of Arrow is coming (Date: 02 Oct 2016) Bleeding Cool - Picture of Diggle in his new helmet. He also eventually came out of the closet, and -- as mentioned -- was the son of Green Lantern. So how much of this could possibly have stuck around for TV? *"It's all in there. Leviathan CGI was interesting, not great, not crappy Compressed light blasts - aww yeah Bad-ass punch to the head Kendra v Savage Really liked the mace effect Kendra laid into Savage and Carter with a bad ass spiked mace - no blood Legends and Cassandra Savage v. Shock Troops Casandra with the throwing knife in the back … But why did they stand around when they had Savage at the start Time Travel: Share your thoughts He knows where his family is even though they were at Whitechapel - can't get his family to safety. OK, so no matter what he does Savage's forces keep killing his family - time wants his family to die, yet he's still trying to change it. Rip Hunter Running into the final battle at the rally with no real plan - yet another example of not great captaining A bit of a dick not wanting the refugees on board Gideon He basically gives up when the Waverider is damaged. Vandal Savage Great speech at the start Vandal Savage's Daughter - Cassandra Savage Decent training montage with a katana She didn't know that the Armageddon virus was unleashed by Savage, and that Savage created Per Degaton… and there came the inevitable reveal Joins the rebels at the end. The Atom - Ray Palmer “It worked, I'm not dead… yet” Giant Sized ATOM Looks crushed when Kendra says “we need to talk” White Canary - Sara Lance Aside from decent staff fighting, not a lot Kinda weird that she brought up the whole soulmate thing with Kendra, but she's her friend, so I guess it was in character Hawkgirl - Kendra Saunders Golden mace is pretty cannon - Nth metal Hawkman - Carter Hall Spike mace training scene, he wasn't actually a bit of a douche Captain Cold - Leonard Snart Solid throughout the episode, esp. In his interactions with Cassandra Backstory with his dad who was a monster is a lot of callback to the Flash Episode with Golden Glider as well. Heatwave - Mick Rory “It works with my outfit” It's great when Mic is actually into the role - his looks while interrogating the daughter was kinda awesome. Firestorm - Professor Martin Stein Cared about the refugees, but didn't have a lot to do - was injured for the climactic fight. Firestorm - Jefferson Jackson Ray's cheering section - not a lot of direct action since Stein was out of commission. Waverider/Gideon EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS: Season 1 Episode 13 “Leviathan” (Date: 29 Apr 2016) Article:http://comicbook.com/dc/2016/04/29/dcs-legends-of-tomorrow---x-things-you-might-have-missed-in-levi/ Leviathan: There have been two Leviathans in DC Comics. The first Leviathan was Gim Allor, a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The most recent Leviathan wasn't a person at all, but an offshoot of the League of Assassins. Talia al Ghul created Leviathan to oppose Batman Inc. Growing Atom: Savage's Leviathan is clearly a giant version of Ray's ATOM suit The Rebel Leader: Sharon Taylor, who played the unnamed Rebel Leader on tonight's episode, was in Smallville, she played Zod's lieutenant Faora Cassandra Savage: Cassandra Savage is actually based on a different DC character... Kassandra Sage is one of Vandal Savage's daughters in the New 52. After the police arrested Savage for a string of sacrificial murders, Kass grew up to become a profiler for the FBI, specializing in serial killers. After not speaking to Savage for years, Kass used her father to help solve a string of copycat murders committed by the son of the man who arrested Savage. Of course, most fans were hoping that Cassandra would wind up being Scandal Savage, a member of the Secret Six, a group of anti-hero mercenaries. Extra - thumping class of scotch looked like Jurassic Park. Extra - did anyone think of Capt. America Civil war when ATOM grew - like Ant-man growing into Giant-man ARROW NEWS: Wendy Mericle talks Prometheus, no magic, and Flashpoint (Date: 24 Aug 2016) * “for Season 5 … we did want to go back to our roots and figure out what is specific to this show. What is our universe? Go back to, 'What is Arrow?'" * Season 5 villain will be Prometheus, a prominent DC comics villain * "He's not going to have magic, no powers. He has a very personal grudge and axe to grind with Oliver and he's going to come at him in a really interesting, sociopathic kind of way." * "Flashpoint provides an interesting jumping off point for all the shows this year, in that we have this reset button available to us if we want it," Link:http://comicbook.com/2016/08/24/arrow-season-5-more-details-on-prometheus-and-flashpoint-effect/ Background on the comic book Prometheus * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheus_(comics) * Three villains have used the name, but the “second” Prometheus is the main one. * No powers, but can download files on any hero and upload fighting styles * Sometimes set up as the Anti-Batman * Ties in to Green Arrow mythology through the very controversial Justice League: Cry for Justice, miniseries (2009) where [Spoiler alert] his actions result in (i) the death of Roy Harper's daughter, (ii) Roy losing an arm, and ultimately (iii) Ollie murdering Prometheus in cold blood in revenge. CW drops a new Arrow Season 5 Promo Trailer (Date: 24 Aug 2016) * Not much new, but… * First look at Chad L. Coleman of The Walking Dead in the role of Tobias Church, a gang leader going up against the Green Arrow. (Date: 23 Aug 2016) * You may recall last month pics surfaced that gave us a look at that mysterious black-clad speedster, and the actor that was playing him. * The images clearly show Todd Lasance (The Vampire Diaries, Underbelly, Spartacus: War of the Damned) under the mask, and we recently learned that this new character was actually Savitar…. * Except, he isn't! * Hollywood Reporter wrote up a piece confirming that Lasance would be playing Savitar. * Greg Berlanti then took to Twitter, refuting this report and saying “Savitar has not been cast”. * TV Line then confirmed Todd Lasance is playing The Rival Link:http://www.comicbookmovie.com/the_flash/todd-lasance-has-been-confirmed-to-play-savitar-on-season-3-of-the-a144759 Link2:http://comicbook.com/2016/08/24/heres-who-todd-lasance-is-really-playing-on-the-flash/ Flash: Casting for the Top announced AND Ep.3.04 details (Date: 18 Aug 2016) * The Flash has cast Ashley Rickards as Rosalind "Rosa" Dillon a.k.a. The Top * she'll make her debut in the fourth episode of the upcoming third season. * Her version will also share a fairly intimate relationship with Grey Damon's Mirror Master as she's being teased as the Bonnie to his Clyde. * Rickards is best known for her lead role as Jenna Hamilton on MTV's comedy drama series Awkward and has also guest-starred on episodes of Zoey 101, Ugly Betty, One Tree Hill, Entourage, and American Horror Story: Murder House. * Additionally, episode 3.04 is shaping up to be a big one for the series: it will introduce Mirror Master, and will also feature the return of fan-favorite Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold. Kim deserves it and he's gonna kill it.” * Kim Miles, a Vancouver-based cinematographer, will be overseeing Stentz's episode as director. * Some fans are already voicing their disappointment now that they know Stentz's episode won't be handled by Kevin Smith; the two's worked wonders last season with "The Runaway Dinosaur," Link:http://comicbook.com/2016/08/22/x-men-first-class-thor-screenwriter-penning-an-episode-of-the-fl/ Flash: First look at Joey King as the villain Magenta (Date: 22 Aug 2016) * The pic gives us a very good idea of how King will look as the supervillain when she makes her debut Link:http://www.comicbookmovie.com/the_flash/tdkr-actress-joey-king-gives-us-an-idea-of-how-shell-look-as-the-a144734 Flash: Teddy Sears to return as Black Flash at some point (Date: 19 Aug 2016) * Zoom transformed into the Black Flash during the finale, which seemingly set up some sort of return for the villain down the line. * Based on comments from executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, it definitely sounds like the door is open for the villain to return at some point this year: "Obviously we did that on purpose," said Kriesberg. "We love working with Teddy. He's such an amazing actor and amazing person, and was so much a part of the success of this show last season. There aren't any immediate plans for that, but you can't keep a good Black Flash down, so I'm sure we'll be seeing him in the future." Talking Through What’s Happened and What’s Going On The second half of season five begins with What’s Happened and What’s Going On, a polarizing episode as we say goodbye to another main character. If you didn’t know that already, then stop right now and go watch the show, we’ll wait for you! Another episode with mixed feelings at the end. Both of us agree that there were aspects of the episode that really were very well done, however, we made a slight divergence in our overall ratings. We talk about the difference in our opinions of the episode, as well as how we felt about the end of Tyreese’s journey. We also discuss the many different guest appearances (as well as one notable absence) and what we think will happen next. Ratings were up! This week’s episode, What Happened and What’s Going On, was another ratings success even though it didn’t beat out the Grammys. What’s Happened and What’s Going On got a 7.60 in the 18-49 demographic, with 14.807 million viewers, up from the mid-season finale‘s 7.00 and 13.329 million viewers. Send in your feedback! We didn’t get any feedback this week, but we’d still love to hear from you! Totally agree with us? Think we missed something big? Let us know! Send in your feedback for the next episode, S5E10, titled Them. Other Stuff Completely Unrelated to What’s Happened and What’s Going On! I've been enjoying Chad Coleman's measured portrayal of Tyreese, this multi-faceted character who with his hammer and his wool cap seemed to have burst straight out of the pages of the comic this season, especially once he became activated by Karen's death. It was a pleasure to speak with Chad as he thoughtfully answered everything we wanted to know. Join me and special guest Brittany as we find out things like:* What Tyreese would've done if he had found out Carol killed Karen before she left the prison (his answer might surprise you—it did me).* What it was like to film that crazy scene by the road where Tyreese hammers his way through a massive crowd of zeds.* How Chad sees the relationship between Tyreese and Rick.* What was going on in the S3 finale when Tyreese abruptly left the room seeming like he had a purpose.* How working on TWD compares to his time on the acclaimed HBO show The Wire.* And much more! Hope you enjoy the interview as much as we did! For all our listeners in the U.S., happy Thanksgiving!
