We're diving deep into Sam Mendes' 2002 neo-noir masterpiece Road to Perdition—a film soaked in atmosphere, grief, and some of the most stunning cinematography in modern cinema. Set in 1930s Illinois, Road to Perdition tells the story of a mob enforcer whose son witnesses a murder, launching them on a road trip fueled by vengeance, protection, and ultimately, redemption. Starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Tyler Hoechlin, with Oscar-winning cinematography by Conrad L. Hall, this film blends brutal violence with heartbreaking beauty—and we're unpacking it all.

WARNING: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen the 2024 Warner Bros./DC Comics/CW release "Superman & Lois" or do not mind hearing key plot points. Superman & Lois recently completed its 4th season on the CW Network. The network had been sold, and the producers were given a 10-episode order for a final season with a reduced cast, smaller budget, and limited resources. Still, the series finished strong, with a storyline involving Doomsday and arch-villain Lex Luthor, played by my Michael Cudlitz. Superman & Lois starred Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman and Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane. Showrunner Todd Helbing was joined by writing partner Brent Fletcher in helming the final season. Helbing joined the podcast towards the beginning of the series' run (Episode 267). In this episode, Helbing laments the outpouring of praise for the series finale. He discusses the challenges of doing the entire series, especially discussing the budget limitations for Season 4. Helbing also gave insight as to the casting of Cudlitz as Lex Luthor, and the incredible performances of Tulloch, and Hoechlin, as well as Kent twins Alex Garfin and Michael Bishop. Bishop replaced actor Jordan Elsass in Season 3. Helbing also went in-depth in discussing the now iconic final scene of the series finale.

The Superhero Show Show #557Superman and Lois: Is This Goodbye to Luthor? In this episode of The Superhero Show Show, the hosts dive deep into the shocking events of Superman and Lois episode 406, titled "When the Lights Come On." With tension at an all-time high, they tackle the burning question on everyone's mind: Is this Goodbye to Luthor? As the episode wraps up Lex Luthor's storyline (for now), the hosts explore the potential consequences for the Man of Steel and how this pivotal episode sets the stage for what's next in Smallville. Is This Goodbye to Luthor? The hosts start by dissecting the episode's biggest twist—Lex Luthor's sudden departure from the main plot. Throughout Superman and Lois, Luthor has been a formidable threat, weaving in and out of Clark Kent's life with cunning schemes. In "When the Lights Come On," his arc takes a surprising turn, leaving fans wondering if this is truly the end of Luthor's presence or just a temporary farewell. The hosts debate whether this is a calculated move by the showrunners to give Superman room to breathe or if Luthor will return with even more dangerous plans. The conversation also touches on the emotional stakes of Luthor's final moments in this episode. The hosts dive into how Lex's relationship with Superman has evolved, particularly in this season. Has he finally met his match, or is he simply retreating to regroup? They also speculate on how this departure affects the tone of the show going forward. Without Lex's looming presence, what new threats will arise, and can the show maintain its tension without its most iconic villain? The Emotional Depth of Superman and LoisNext, the hosts delve into how "When the Lights Come On" balances its superhero action with rich emotional depth. This episode sees not only Luthor's potential exit but also pivotal moments for the Kent family. Lois continues her fight against cancer, and the strain on Clark and their children grows more evident. The hosts discuss how the show manages to ground itself in real human issues, despite its super-powered premise. They praise the performances of Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch, particularly in the more intimate scenes, and explore how this balance keeps fans invested beyond the superhero spectacle. The Penguin - Top HatAfter breaking down Superman and Lois, the hosts shift gears to talk about the latest episode of The Penguin, titled "Top Hat." This episode sees Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, rise to even greater power within Gotham's criminal underworld. The hosts discuss how Oswald's arc in this episode mirrors that of Lex Luthor—both characters are strategists who use their intelligence to outmaneuver their enemies. They analyze how "Top Hat" sees The Penguin navigate through political intrigue and personal vendettas, setting up a power play that could have serious ramifications for Gotham's future. The hosts also explore the different leadership styles of Penguin and Luthor, noting that while Luthor's departure from Superman and Lois seems final (for now), Penguin's ascent in Gotham is only just beginning. They highlight the gripping performances and the darker tone of The Penguin, comparing it to the more hopeful atmosphere of Superman and Lois. These contrasts provide an interesting discussion on how different superhero shows tackle power, ambition, and morality.Spider-Man: The Animated Series - Partners in Danger, Chapter I: Turning GuiltyFinally, the hosts wrap up the episode with a throwback to Spider-Man: The Animated Series, discussing "Partners in Danger, Chapter I: Turning Guilty." This episode kicks off a gripping new arc in the series, with Peter Parker...

I'm Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody. First image dropped of Superman with Krypto and all I have to say is, he's a good boy.Let's talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 2 - A World WithoutDirected by:David GiuntoliWritten By:Brent Fletcher and Todd HelbingThe Apple TV and Imdb description is: Reeling from failure, Jordan begins to spiral; Jonathan discovers newfound strength; Gen. Lane recruits John Henry and Natalie Irons, before making a choice that will change everything.I CAN'T SEE THE SHOW IT'S TOO DARK! Make TV Turn Up Brightness Again!“Can you ever truly explain how much a person meant to you?” The opening montage with Lois' monologue is almost too much to handle. They are really laying it on thick. Is that a funeral? Did they bury him or are they just talking in front of a tree?I don't understand the conversation Sam is having with the other DOD agent. Is she a superior? Or is he ordering her around?Oooh flashback! Omg I loooooove that Clark is awkwardly telling Sam the secret lol. “Superman - I'm me, we're the same person” Haha the slo mo glasses reveal. I have to say, he does look and seem different! Very reminiscent of Reeve in that famous scene from STM in Lois' apt!Great seeing John Henry and Nat!What a scoop for the Smallville Gazette!I actually really like that Jonathan is mad at Jordan and needs some space. This is real brother shit. Especially with twins. “You were never trying to save dad, you were trying to be a hero and now he's dad, my dad is dead and I never get to see him again.” This was great acting. JONATHAN HAS POWERS!!! FUCK YES!!!!“Can't believe he's flying already” - me too Lois, me too. They call freeze breath, “ice breath,” what do you think about that?Lois calls this bad timing, but I think it's GREAT timing. The more stable brother got powers. Let's fucking go.They are doing a great job with keeping Tyler in the mix with these flashbacks. “We don't get to sign up for the friends and family program.” This is great showing us these conversations between Sam and Clark because we've earned these flashbacks from what we went through with Sam in the first season and then seeing him come around and then now seeing that version of him again, seems like a familiar reminder. What's Doomsday eating? Lex: “The difference is I like him” That's messed up lolWow I love Jonathan cutting up fruit and smelling it! I don't think I've ever thought about that particular power being intense for Superman. “Your father hated limburger cheese”Do you feel it's realistic that Jordan still plays video games? I feel like if I had powers I would fly to every place in the world I've always wanted to see. Instead of a racing game I would actually race. “G'afternoon Superboy” lolOhhhh F, Lois chose Jonathan. Damn. Didn't see that coming. All this backdoor politics in the DOD is boring to me. MARTHA!!!!!!! “Clark you're gonna be a great husband and a terrific father” Love that she has the signature bun tooLois: “don't you ever say that to me again, EVER. “Lex Luthor is using you to hurt me”Who is “Jones?!” J'onn J'onez?jesust how many times is Sam Lane going to almost die. Super-Sam let's GO! Did NOT see this coming. “Suit up John.” Oh yeah they're both suiting up! Double STEEL. Lois in a Wedding Dress! She looks beautiful, I'm crying. “You fell in love with Clark Kent but you're marrying Superman.” “Ok Pumpkin, I trust you. But I see how much you love him….you have my blessing.” That actually is a huge revelation that they got the blessing. You called Superman with a human heart!!!!Great character arc for Sam Lane. I love that he got to be the hero saving Lois, the kids and Superman. “He's gonna come back, I'll be there too for every beat”Ah so the funeral was for Sam, not Superman. Nice twist. What was the significance of the matching shirts the boys were wearing? Update - the shirts were gifts from Sam for their fishing trip. This is long term story telling.  Follow us on twitter at https://x.com/SupermanPalsPod!Check out a video version of this episode at https://www.youtube.com/@gonzo3249! Click subscribe!

EPISODE 2 - A World Without - “Powers beat Psycho Everytime”Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I'm Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody. Let's talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 2 - A World WithoutDirected by:Sudz SutherlandWritten By:Katie Aldrin and Kristi KorzekThe Apple TV and Imdb description is: Lana and Sarah join the fight against Luthor, who starts making moves in Smallville; Jordan and Jonathan butt heads over an important decision.Very sweet of Lana to get everyone away but “Superman is Lois' friend, her GOOD friend” was just sooooo cheesy. That must've been painful for Lana as she knew and loved Clark first, I wish it had been a better moment. First time around I missed that Lara put Clark in a sort of suspended animation. In previous iterations of the Death including the comics he wasn't really dead. He just needed time to regenerate. In this case he doesn't have a HEART. So he's legit dead right? “An alter state of existence.” At first I thought it was the phantom zone but it's how Kal-El made it to earth in his pod.Lana going after Luthor makes sense. She is the mayor Smallville, he's in her town now. Also if you remember in the early Byrne era, Lana took a literal beating from Luthor's goons in Superman #2, as mentioned previously. She had a rough go of it in the comics until she married Pete Ross.An Ocean's 11 type one last score does not seem to fit with the prize being Superman's FUCKING HEART. I dunno, it's so gruesome. Obviously Lex figured out that Jordan has powers. Even though he didn't figure out Clark was Superman, something about Jordan's disguise seemed so obvious. The idea that he never figured out Clark's secret because of his hubris/arrogance makes sense to me. I'm sorry but this plan to go on a two-front heart stealing with Sarah distracing is just silly. I get that the first episode had heavy emotion so they needed an action plot but it was sillyJordan standing up against the Kryptonite was cool but I wish there was some nuance where because he's half-human Kryptonite doesn't affect him as much and that he could fight against itCan't believe Luthor squashed Superman's heart. Like how are they going to get out of this one? I love that we don't know. Jor-El Clark. I like it. Does this mean Clark's the fortress guy for the next couple episodes? With only 10 episodes are they really going to not have Superman in the show for more than like one more? She's the scientist who figured out Clark was Superman in Issue #2Boys picked up on Clark's fear vs DoomsdayThe flashback kills me - “Sometimes I'm a Little Dorky”I never thought in a million years that I'd see Superman lose his virginity, unless that happened on Smallville lol. “Get ready to have a new best day of your life.”The fight was really really good. I love that it was in space - away from civilians. They Did the thing - Man of Steel #19!The Flashback of Lois in her signature Purple with the vest is almost too much for me to handleSo a tiny shard of Kryptonite in Clark's neck doesn't hurt him?Gretchen Kelley is luthor's personal physician, but here it isn't her real name - “No one can hide from Luthor.” Wasn't she also Lex Luthor II's fake mother?Luthor sitting down with the kids scared the crap out of me and just when I thought he couldn't scare me any more he slammed on the table and WHOAWhat did you think of Luthor's bushy flashback look? I kinda liked it!What did you think about the whole source of the plot is that Lois screwed up, and screwed up big? I have a problem with it. To me Lois is infallible when it comes to journalism. Are there other times when she was just flat out wrong and it cost someone their life? I love Sam Lane being a guy who has 9 lives. I feel like he has more depth as a character than he ever had in the comics, with exception of around Krisis of Krimson Kryptonite when Lois' mom was dying, and he accepted Clark etc. Sam said, “Luthor tried to kill him for years and failed” but does the timing work out? Seems like Luthor would've gone to jail right around Superman's debut? The timeline is still fuzzy to me. Superman's last stand when he emerges from the asteroid was an appropriate use of angry red eyes of anger. While I appreciate we needed Doomsday to take superman's heart to have a plot for the next episode and because Lex said it early on, I don't like that Superman didn't die saving everyone. That should be the thing. Paying the ultimate sacrifice. Doomsday just straight up beat him. Don't like that.“Milton,” “Brainiac going to his head…”The last few moments were really hard to watch. The combination of Lois' horror with all the flashback moments was a lot. This is ACTING. I got to say to Bitsie in person last year that she was robbed of an Emmy nom. And She agreed lol. I know we talked about how these kinds of shows don't get those kinds of awards and I just don't accept that.  Follow us on twitter at https://x.com/SupermanPalsPod!Check out a video version of this episode at https://www.youtube.com/@gonzo3249! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I'm Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody. Fan Expo Chicago August 2023:Henry's going to meet BITSIE!!!!!Writer's Strike:Has production finished on S&L? I assume writing has finished? From TV Line: “By and large, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and The CW won't exhibit any immediate impact from the strike as the regular TV season winds down and already-scripted finales are filmed — albeit without any last-minute tweaks. Among the shows/seasons yet to premiere and those with summertime finale dates, Nancy Drew completed filming its upcoming farewell season in December, Riverdale‘s final-season scripts are all completed, Superman & Lois is wrapped on Season 3, NBC's The Blacklist wrapped its series finale on May 1, and NBC's L.A. Fire & Rescue docuseries from Dick Wolf remains on track for its July 7 debut.”Let's talk about Superman & Lois Season 3, Episode 7S03E7 - Forever and AlwaysDirected by:Alvaro RonWritten By:Adam MallingerIMDB & Apple TV: Lois and Clark dig deeper on Bruno Mannheim, starting with his connections to Hob's Bay Medical Center; Jonathan and Jordan panic at home over Lois' dire diagnosis; Matteo comes to Smallville to meet John Henry. HENRY's NOTES:Superman stuffWait wait wait. Clark has the potential to share Kryptonian tech but doesn't? Is this like a Wakanda Vibranium thing? No Superman in this episodeManheim InvestigationOhhhhh, so Mannheim is Peia's husband. Love that.So Mannheim and his wife have got a little Romeo and Juliet thing with her being a part of another family. “Little Aces,” is that supposed to be Ace of Clubs? Classic Lois, blowing the one friendship she made in service of the story. She ain't in it to make friends“I'm questioning her like she's a part of some conspiracy.” SHE IS. Lois is still the best.I love the idea that Clark will get to Mannheim by going through a human interest angle. The kind of stuff he writes - features. Clark: “How far would you go to cure this disease?” Bruno: “You tell me Mr. Kent, how far would you go to save her?”“Isn't risking a few lives for a breakthrough that could save millions worth it?” Classic villainy. Clark reels him like A Few Good Men. Mannheim gave it right away with his anger, and Clark knew that it was personal. It actually makes Lois and Clark's investigation better by knowing Peia is Mannheim's wife“Now you know the truth. Do what you want with it.” -MannheimWe need to see Mannheim do something completely dastardly.OH SHIT PEIA HAD POWERS ALL ALONG! SHE FUCKING MURDERED EVERYONEI CALLED THAT MATTEO WAS A MANNHEIM!Cancer stuffOh god. Here comes the Lois-is-sick stuff to kick off the episode. I hate this. Although it's nice seeing Clark not wearing his glasses inside the house for a change. “Clark's the best” - LoisBoys busted at the fortress. Poor kids. Jonathan's turn to act like a little prick. Clark with the, “do YOU UNDERSTAND ME! DO YOU?!”Lois proving your point about the new Jonathan looking more like JordanLois is admitting she has no friends is spot on for her character. Have you ever seen Lois with a true friend in her 85 years of existence?“Clark's not great on the grill, but he makes a decent burger” - Why is Clark not being good on a grill, a thing? Haha, they can't say “Fuck Cancer” on network tv.Great call from Jonathan that Hope doesn't cure heart attack, stroke and cancer. That was a good sceneTwins, Sarah, Nat, John HenryJohn Henry - “I'm a cool dad”What's John Henry being weird about?I guess I can relate a little bit like when I see one of my kids playing with a really wild kid at school, I'm suspicious. Nice seeing there's a line for the local movie theater“You are perfect” kiss. Cute. Lana/Sarah/Kyle/ChrissyDaaaaaamn Sarah that was COLD - “We know you already have.”“She's like 10 years younger than dad, it's gross.” Is it?Poor Chrissy, Sarah should feel bad. Haha love that Chrissy brings her own candy. AND WEED GUMMIES. Haha she goes to Coachella every summer. I gotta say I kinda love this whole drama with Sarah/Chrissy/Lana/Kyle/John Henry/Nat/MateoWhere was Kyle in this episode? Got too many lines in the last episode?“Everyone's moved on”??? Lana, you're the one who left Kyle. Not saying you didn't have a good reason, but you pushed everyone away. And slapped your daughter. Yep, still not over that. That is some classic small town behavior, lighting fireworks. Not seen since going down to the quarry for a beer bash.

Happy Wine Wednesday my fellow long suffering Teen Wolf fans! This episode is aptly titled "Another Round" because we're having one last therapy session on the hot mess that was the Teen Wolf Movie.  I've enlisted a fantastic panel of guests to join me - Philip, Stacey, and Terence. They also graciously agreed to do a very brief chat about the Wolf Pack pilot.  It is truly bewildering that Jeff Davis gets to continue his reign of terror on supernatural fans with an all new show featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar.  The episode kicks off with our Wolf Pack discussion and right around 1:09:42 mark, we get into the Teen Wolf movie.  I decided to use the Festivus approach to the discussion and you better believe we had a lot of grievances to air.If you haven't already, be sure to check out my fun chat with Laura Stone and Devil Doll about the Teen Wolf Movie as well.  The duo worked with me to construct a Teen Wolf Movie compliment sandwich in which we had two very thin layers of compliments with a huge heaping portion of constructive criticism in between. As always, thanks for listening. And friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!Be sure to follow and support Terence: his website, his Twitter account, and his IG. There's plenty of DC Comics easter eggs discussed and even a little Bob Dylan!Henry's show notes:EPISODE 2: Uncontrollable Forces - “I Can Shave Hours Off Your Commute”Greetings Super friends! Welcome BACK to Superman & Lois & Pals. I'm Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody. Shazam/Black Adam newsTitans newsLet's talk about Superman and Lois Season 3 Episode 2S03E2 - “Uncontrollable Forces”Directed by: Elizabeth HenstridgeWritten By:Katie AldrinIMDB and Apple TV: Clark and Chrissy notice a small crack in Lois' game face; Sarah and Jordan have an awkward encounter; Lana receives a panicked phone call.Lois Cancer StuffI don't think I'm emotionally prepared to handle a Lois Lane illness portrayed by Bitsie. She's too good of an actress, it's going to wreck me. Why didn't Lois tell Clark about her health? That doesn't seem realistic. Clark is being very supportive as usualFuck, Cancer. I don't want this. This fucking sucks. I have this personal thing about tv. I don't want to see real shit. I want to escape into a fantasy.“I was a little shocked when [the producers] first told me that's what they wanted to do,” actress Elizabeth Tulloch tells TVLine. “But I actually think it's pretty wonderful. This storyline hasn't been done, and cancer is such a prevalent force in so many people's lives. This villain is so relatable and so real, and more than anything it's one that Clark and Superman can't just go handle. For Superman, who is this all-powerful superhero, to be faced with something he's completely powerless against is even more grounding for the show, and it places a greater emphasis on the strength of us as a couple and the family dynamic. I thought it was exciting, and I hope the fans feel the same way.”“We reached out to so many people — doctors, oncologists, people who had been through it, spouses who have been through it, families that have been through it,” Fletcher tells TVLine. “All of our scripts have been vetted to make sure that it's playing real, because we don't want it to be taken lightly. We want to put Lois on a real journey that so many other women in the world are going through. Hopefully they can take solace in seeing that a character as iconic as Lois Lane is suffering the same thing, and to feel like they have someone to relate to. We thought long and hard about it, and we felt like we had something to say.” Fletcher expects fans to be surprised at how “in-depth” the show goes with Lois' cancer battle without shifting the show's established tone. “We're not going to despair and darkness all the time,” he says. “We have a very hopeful family, and we hold onto that, but we're never telling the audience that the threat isn't real.” “It's our arc for the season,” he adds. “It's our villain for the season, to be honest.”Wait, why couldn't she give a full family history because of her mom?“I promise I will never look at you any other way. We will get through this together. You're gonna beat this thing, not a doubt in my mind” The kid stuffSorry, Jordan is now just being pathetic and desperate. Give it up kid. But Sarah is very nice and loved that she gave him her oversized shirtParty in Metropolis! Woooo!!! Now we're seeing a little bit of Jonathan's “bad-boy" persona. I like it. “Fraternals Right?”Ok what part of Metropolis is this?! Is this the suburbs? Gold Coast-ish? Why was she annoyed he brought his TWIN BROTHER?Poor Jordan. He's got the whole clumsy Clark thing but not on purpose. Get it Nat!SARAH'S WEARING A BOB DYLAN I WANT YOU 1966 SHIRT! I Want You is the first track on side 2 of disc one on 1966's Blonde on Blonde. Obviously I've been searching for the shirt. @msdylangirl on twitter found it!This party is terrible. Get out of there kids! Just leave!Clark and LoisLove the little Clark/Lois reporter dynamic“Do you think Harry has that early bird special” - ClarkClark listens to her heartbeat to see if she's lying. “Get your hands off me! Don't Touch me!” - Very Margo Kidder vibes“We're a team, best one I know”I love that Lois was the one to talk her down, not Superman saving herManheimSo it looks like Otomotopia's powers are sonic based and have changed a bit from the comicsGeorge said, “It was always about the pride of Smallville”Shotgun wounds but no bulletsWe're just hearing now about George Jr?Who's Mr. Orr?Very Luthor vibes from S:TAS calling Superman to his balcony“The Suicide Slums” - not an official neighborhood, but a nickname, which I think it always was but now Manheim has gentrified it? Nice callback to Luthor and Edge.Lana and John Henry are a fun team. One of the few good things that came out of New 52.Oh cool Onomatopoeia killed this earth's John HenryNice seeing Chicago's “L”

Happy Wine Wednesday! Two new spectacular guests to the pod - Laura Stone and Devil Doll - join me this week for the home going services of Derek Hale.   Grab your wine and join us as we unpack our feelings about the Teen Wolf movie.  Laura and Devil Doll are both passionate Teen Wolf fans and I had the best time talking about this mess with them. Before getting into this mess of a movie, I asked Laura and Devil Doll for their reflections on Teen Wolf as a series.  We then get into our deep dive of the movie.  We take the "compliment sandwich" approach to this conversation. We've got a very robust set of grievances with this film sandwiched between very thin layers of compliments.  It should come as no surprise that we kick off our critical thoughts about the film with the many, many crimes committed by Jeff Davis against Derek Hale.  We chat about the messy ways in which this film tries to grapple with the absence of Dylan O'Brien and you better believe we talk about the egregious treatment of Arden Cho.  We also lament that Jeff Davis decided to celebrate the opportunity to infuse more adult content into the film thanks to it being on Paramount Plus by giving us a sprinkling of profanity and ass shots - hence the title of this episode. We also give thanks to Colton Haynes and Ian Bohen for bringing some much needed camp to this film.  Truly wish Jackson had been given more to do!A lot of my friends had thoughts about this film, so this is the first of two episodes in which we will be discussing it - so stay tuned!Give Laura a follow on Twitter here and over on IG here.  You can also check out her website at this link. You can find DevilDoll on Twitter here and Tumblr. Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time.Support the showFollow the pod on IG and Twitter. On an all-new, all-different episode of The Superhero Show Show, Cassie and the Boyz are watching episode #301 of The Umbrella Academy! If you can remember all the way back to season two, the gang finds themselves back home, but home is no longer the Umbrella Academy - it's the Sparrow Academy? What has Daddy Hargraves gone and done this time? Tune in and listen to the Taste Buds take you on a beat-by-beat journey through the first episode of the season, and their hopes for the rest of season 3. Will it be Superhero favorite fudgeboi Fabian Cortez? I for one hope so.  Finally, as if that wasn't enough show, Ryan and Katelynn sit down with Alison, Bethany, and Michael of the podcast The Superman and Lois Tapes for their thoughts on the second season, and what might happen in the third, all just before the second season finale.
