Today on Too Opinionated we visit with actor W. Earl Brown. Wes Craven was an early supporter, casting Earl in New Nightmare, A Vampire in Brooklyn and the role of "Kenny" in the classic, Scream. Two years after the success of Scream, Earl played "Warren", Cameron Diaz's mentally challenged brother, in There's Something About Mary. Among his many other film credits are the highly regarded films: Being John Malkovich, The Master, The Sessions , Wild , Black Mass, and the Netflix hits - The Highwaymen and The Unforgivable. On television, Earl has guest starred in many series, including: The Mandalorian, Luck, Seinfeld, Hacks, Yellowstone, American Horror Story, Justified, X-Files, Six Feet Under, and NYPD Blue. Among the TV movies he has been involved with, was the starring role in VH1's Meatloaf: To Hell and Back. He played "Tom Carlin" in ABC's highly acclaimed anthology series American Crime (2015) and "Teague Dixon" in HBO's True Detective. He is probably best known as "Dan Dority" in HBO's Deadwood. During that series' second season, the show's creator, David Milch, invited him to join the writing staff. In 2007, Earl earned a WGA nomination for writing on a drama series and a SAG nomination for best drama ensemble acting. Establishing himself on a show as critically lauded as Deadwood opened doors for other writing projects, including the Sony release, Bloodworth, which Earl wrote and produced. Earl can currently be seen as Wes Fox on Sheriff Country. In addition to his television and film work, Earl co-starred in Sony's The Last Of Us, 2013 Video Game Of The Year. He also writes music and records with Sacred Cowboys, an LA based Americana band. In 2018, he combined his love of music and film by co-creating the short film, Dad Band, which racked up 1.3 million views on YouTube.

The Psychgeist of Pop Culture: The Last of Us (Playstory Press, 2025) explores the psychological themes at the heart of The Last of Us franchise. Authors from media, culture, and fandom studies explore how trauma, grief, morality, survival, and revenge shape the story's characters and influence their choices. This book examines these themes across both video games (The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2) and HBO television adaptation, focusing on their unique approaches to telling the same emotionally resonant stories. This includes close readings of key characters - such as Ellie and Joel - and considers how their experiences reflect broader human struggles. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. Lexie chats with Troy Baker, the voice of Joel in the popular video game series 'The Last of Us.' The conversation explores a range of topics, from childhood narratives and their impact on personal growth to the philosophical and historical influences that shape storytelling. Troy dives deep into his own nostalgic triggers, the importance of simple yet profound narratives, and the experience of loss and empathy in 'The Last of Us Part II.' They also touch on the critical balance between player agency and linear storytelling in video games. This episode provides a rich exploration of how ancient and modern stories continue to resonate today, all through the lens of a beloved video game series. This is a public episode. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the incredible screenwriter, showrunner, producer and dungeon master CRAIG MAZIN!Craig is a self proclaimed Pipster! Which bodes incredibly well as an opening gambit right there... This is such a treat of an episode which anyone possessing an interest in the making of television (and cinema in general) will get an immense kick out of. Chances are you will know Craig from his recent work on The Last Of Us, some of you may go back to the Chernobyl miniseries times, and some even further to the Hangover movies, but none of these can be considered pigeonholes. There is so much in the craft of these projects, and as viewers of them will know - the humanity is undeniable, and that's something that just cannot be faked or phoned-in. So what you hear here is a conversation with someone who makes incredible shows and movies, informed by a love of the work, the people involved, and life in general. To hear that he was once blamed by a critic for being "singularly responsible for degrading Western Civilization" will make absolutely negative sense by the time you've heard this. Oh and stay for the shared Barney story too, cos that rules. Basically - too much to sum up here - just listen and enjoy, it's a classic DPP right here!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureIMDBSCRIPTNOTES podcast (book here)THE LAST OF USCHERNOBYLSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. I revere people who have made a significant transformation to their identity. We like to celebrate people who have make huge accomplishments out in the world. But people who actually transformed who and how they are are now my heroes. Now my guest has some big, worldy accomplishments, but I invited him onto this podcast because of his personal transformation. Josh Peck is an actor, comedian, YouTuber, and social media star. He rose to fame in a lead role in the Nicleodeon sitcom, Drake & Josh, from 2004-2007. More recently he starred in the Disney+ Series, Turner and Hooch and I actually saw him a few weeks ago in an episode of HBO's original series, The Last Of Us. But his story comes from a troubled home. Josh became…fat. The fat kid. To offload the teasing, he turned to being funny. His run on the Drake & Josh show as a childhood actor was literally as the funny fat kid. The show got cancelled, he turned to drugs and alcohol. Lost all his fat. And didn't know who he was. He finally wrote about it all in a book titled, Happy People Are Annoying. You're about to hear about Josh's journey first hand. You can find Josh anywhere you type in Josh Peck. When we talked here he had 13.3 million followers on Instagram and I saw he now has almost 17 million. One Battle After Another, is what I should rename this podcast, because the movie was that good, and a full review is inside. Plus Xbox takes another self imposed L, Sony gives itself a gold medal, and EA goes private. The Simpsons are headed back to the big screen, and an AI "actress" has Hollywood in a fervor. Plus Forza Horizon is finally headed to the land of the Rising Sun, and Ubisoft gives Assassin's Creed a new home.

Copy and paste content doesn't build a connection. If you want your brand to resonate, you need to go deeper, more human, more emotional, more real. That's executed perfectly by The Last of Us, a post-apocalyptic story that became a global phenomenon not because of monsters, but because of its heart. In this episode, we're taking a closer look with the help of our special guest, Ashley Emery, CMO at VelocityEHS.Together, we explore what B2B marketers can learn from emotional storytelling, breaking traditional formats, and building real resonance with your audience (even in the most unexpected places).About our guest, Ashley EmeryAshley excels in driving growth and innovation in B2B technology organizations, both at the global enterprise and high-growth start-up scale. She holds an Executive MBA and specializes in demand generation and revenue-focused marketing strategies. Ashley has a proven track record of building and leading high-performing marketing teams, having served as Head of Global Campaigns for the Database and Analytics category at AWS, VP of Marketing at Emburse, and most recently, the SVP of Demand Generation at Employ, the parent company of JazzHR, Jobvite, and Lever. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Last of Us:Story comes before product. In B2B, it's easy to get stuck in the habit of leading with features, capabilities, or technical specs. But as The Last of Us demonstrates, what draws people in is a story they care about, not a list of innovations. Your product may be powerful, but unless your audience understands how it impacts their world or identity, it won't matter. Center the narrative on the customer's journey, pain, and outcome, your product plays a supporting role in that transformation. This shift can completely reframe how you approach content, ads, and even your brand voice. Ashley advises, “Lead with a human-centric storytelling. Don't sell features… the product is the enabler, it's not the hero.”Your audience might not be who you think. “Even if you think you understand your audience, you may not,” said Ashley, who was surprised herself, as she was so drawn to the series. Just as The Last of Us broke out of its presumed “gamer” audience, B2B brands often have unexpected buyers, champions, or influencers they're missing. Assumptions based on firmographics or industry stereotypes can be limiting. VelocityEHS found that their safety-focused customers were actually risk-tolerant thrill-seekers outside of work, which changed how they positioned messaging. This is a call to continuously validate personas, run qualitative interviews, and listen for nuance. Your best buyers may not look like your ICP on paper. The medium shapes the message. It's not enough to have a great story, you have to tailor it to the channel and format. A 60-minute podcast moment doesn't automatically become a good TikTok. Just like a video game plot doesn't translate directly into a TV script, B2B content has to be rewritten for the medium it's living in. That means writing social hooks, designing natively for mobile, and assuming low context. Ian reminds us that, “-if you take an idea that Ashley says in minute 50 of a podcast and drop it onto LinkedIn, and the person has no context at all who this person is or what they do, then the actual insight itself isn't as interesting or valuable.” Meet your audience where they are, mentally, emotionally, and contextually, or risk wasting great content on the wrong canvas.Quotes“Often in marketing, we get scared of emotion. We try to stay very neutral in our language. We don't want to be provocative, we don't want to be bold, and I think we as humans crave that. The show is a perfect example. The boldness, the emotional connection, and the conflict of the characters was really valuable. There's so much raw emotion and connection in the stories that could be told, and not being afraid to tell an uncomfortable story… is powerful.”Time Stamps[00:55] Meet Ashley Emery, CMO at VelocityEHS.[00:56] Why The Last of Us?[01:42] The Role of CMO at VelocityEHS[02:48] Breaking Down The Last of Us[26:47] B2B Marketing Lessons from The Last of Us[27:36] Human-Centric Storytelling in Marketing[35:16 Understanding Your Audience[38:43] Building an Ecosystem of Content[40:20] The Importance of Star Power[42:14] Embracing Emotional Tension in Marketing[46:11] Final Thoughts & TakeawaysLinksConnect with Ashley on LinkedInLearn more about VelocityEHSAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Send us a textFungi have always been the overlooked kingdom of pathogens. While we've obsessed over viral pandemics and bacterial superbugs, few considered how a simple fungal mutation could tear civilization apart. That's the terrifying premise anchoring "The Last of Us" – and what makes it so unnervingly plausible. At its core, this brilliant adaptation isn't really about the cordyceps infection that transforms humans into mindless, clicking predators. It's about what remains human when everything else is lost. Pedro Pascal delivers a solid performance as Joel, a man hollowed out by grief after losing his daughter in the initial outbreak. When he reluctantly takes on the job of transporting Ellie (a perfectly cast Bella Ramsey) – a teenager mysteriously immune to infection – across a devastated America, neither expects how profoundly they'll change each other. The show masterfully balances faithful recreation of the game's most iconic moments with meaningful expansions to the story. Episode 3's exploration of Bill and Frank's relationship transforms a minor game character into a love story. The practical effects bringing the infected to life – especially the terrifying Clickers – create genuinely nightmarish moments that honor the game's horror elements while adding new dimensions in live action. Most importantly, the gradual evolution of Joel and Ellie's relationship from reluctant traveling companions to surrogate father and daughter feels earned through shared trauma and genuine connection. What lingers after watching isn't the apocalyptic setting or zombie-like threats, but the profound question at the heart of the story: In a world where humanity itself might be finished, what makes individual human connections worth fighting for? And when those connections conflict with the greater good, what choice would any of us make? The answer, as Joel discovers, isn't found in heroic sacrifice or logical calculation, but in that primal, irrational force that has always defined us – the capacity to love beyond all reason.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Kaitlyn Dever, originally episode 475 from 2022-09-21.Original writeup below:If you are unaware of Kaitlyn in your adventures through the wide world of broadcast media, prepare to make fast friends with a true great, and an absolute gem of a person at that. Kaitlyn's been putting down serious moves since childhood, including a Shakespeare stint at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts for those pondering), and her filmography is stellar - ranging from Justified, to Dopesick, to Unbelievable, and more recently Ticket To Paradise (starring alongside Julia Roberts and George Clooney, where the cinema screen actually cracks midway through from so much gorgeous). This is a lovely chat, properly engaging and it's such a treat to hear Kaitlyn's story. OH and as Pip hints at in the intro, prepare for a Kaitlyn fact that will blow yer mind. She casually peppers it in there but thankfully Pip mashes on the brakes and reverses and double takes seamlessly. Enjoy! A new job listing over at PlayStation shows that more games are headed to Xbox. Naturally, the internet did its thing and we saw some crazy titles get tossed out as ideas for ports: The Last Of Us, Uncharted, Spider-Man, God Of War, and so on. Others have suggested that PlayStation is folding just as Xbox has. Have they? Joining me is Sir Bradley Ellis to dive into what ends up being a semi-painful reminder of the current state of Xbox as we shift from topic-to-topic.
