When In Rome's Clive Farrington talks about the unbelievable success of The Promise, why it's not a bad thing to be a ‘one hit wonder,' hanging out with his Napoleon Dynamite friends Jared Hess/Jon Heder/Efren Ramirez, his admiration for the visual presentations of Depeche Mode/Pet Shop Boys/Kraftwerk, his shock at seeing Daryl Hannah announce their MTV Moonman win on TV from Manchester, flying to Dubai to launch Windows 10 with Bill Gates, and why he's excited to have former Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Curtis Joseph as a teary-eyed Superfan! In both podcasting and in life, when you need a friend, don't look to a stranger. Well, unless you've never listened to O3L before...in which case, you should totally look to a stranger. But if you wait around a while, we'll make you fall for us. We promise you we will. This week, we cover the songs that were hits in the dance clubs and on the dance charts. One such song was "The Promise," the emotionally charged synth-pop smash by UK band When In Rome, which hit #1 on the US Hot Dance chart on June 11, 1988. Since then, it has become a beloved classic - on radio, at weddings, on movies and TV. Serendipitous, then, that our Third Lad this week is none other than singer, songwriter and original member of When In Rome UK, Clive Farrington! Fresh off the '80s Cruise with musical partner Andrew Mann, When In Rome UK is busy working on a new album - including the new single "2 Fix Us." Derek and Kieran are joined by Clive Farrington from the band When In Rome. The Promise is one of the 80's most iconic songs and Clive was very generous with his stories of the background to making the song and its revival on the soundtrack to the hit movie Napoleon Dynamite. Clive still tours and has recorded and released a new single, Take Me Home, with Tom Forth. When In Rome Andrew Mann was recruited by Clive Farrington to replace departed members of his Manchester-based group Beau Leisure after Andrew had supported them as a beat poet on later shows. They began to write songs together, recorded some demos – sometimes including Mann's friend Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister) – while seeking a recording deal. The Promise demo, written by Clive with a 1st verse and a chorus was sent down to Andrew by Royal Mail in C90 tape format. Andrew then wrote the second verse and secured a deal with Elektra Record's Simon Potts. The duo were then signed by Virgin UK subsidiary 10 Records' Mick Clark. Producers Ben Rogan (who had worked with Sade) and Richard James Burgess took special interest in the duo's song "The Promise", issued first as a 12" dance disc. Around 1986, original keyboard player, Mike Nuttall's cousin was about to leave UK shores for a new job and life in San Francisco and was given a 12” vinyl recording of The Promise to take with him. He took the record directly to top radio station, Live 105 and they immediately liked it and put it on heavy rotation. From there, the song spread like wildfire across all the major stations in the U.S. Let Christy Take It are proud to present Clive Farrington

Put on your speedos and roll, yes, roll down your windows. Today we're surfing through some retrowave, a genre that's all about those bygone times... but who's kidding who: those times are the 1980s. With a debut album called Atlas, FM-84 (the mostly one-man project of Col Bennett) introduces vocalists Josh Dally, Ollie Wride, and Clive Farrington to help him with his first LP. The idea certainly caught our attention, as did its striking album cover, but ultimately, does it pass the album test? We'll hash out a few discussions along those lines while for our topic we wrestle with the question of whether nostalgia is a prerequisite for just about everything we enjoy in some fashion. Clive is the guy who dreamt up the melodies and initial motifs for "The Promise" and other songs for When in Rome in the late '80s, and after leaving the business for a while, the continued use of that one big song (most notably for the Napoleon Dynamite closing sequence) enabled his return to touring and recording. We discuss two songs from his solo album Independence (2013), "Fall" and "Just Another Love Song," and then look back to the 1988 self-titled When in Rome album for "Something Goin' On." We close by listening to a 2016 single performed with his fellow WIR frontman Andrew Mann, "Lost (Driving All Night)." The intro/outro music is of course "The Promise." on the Love 80's Tour, Clive promotes his upcoming dates
Clive is the man behind one of the most enduring hits of the 80s, 1988's "The Promise", which was reborn when it was featured in Napoleon Dynamite in 2003. Unfortunately, his band, When In Rome, quickly broke up and there's a lot of bad blood that's still very toxic to this day. Clive is working hard to take his destiny into his own hands and keep his name alive. It isn't easy.

promoting his first solo tour: No Promises
The week the boys interview founding member and original singer from the band When In Rome, Clive Farrington. Farrington was one of the writers of the smash hit "The Promise" which was featured in the film "Napoleon Dynamite" and recently covered by Grammy nominated artist Sturgill Simpson.
Steve Cooper talks with musician Clive Farrington. Clive is the vocalist who founded the popular 80' band When in Rome. Michael Floreale and Andy O'Connell were recruited by him to replace departed members of his Manchester-based group Beau Leisure. Floreale and him began to write songs together. Later, Farrington and Floreale saw Andrew Mann, a beat poet, and had him join their performances. The group was signed by Virgin UK and when their song The Promise became popular, hitting the top of Billboard's Dance Club Play chart, Virgin ordered an album. A remixed version of The Promise was the first single from their self-titled debut album. It was an instant success, barely missing the Top Ten in the United States, peaking at No. 11. After the band broke up The Promise was heard in the movie Napoleon Dynamite and found a brand new audience. Clive recently moved to the US and is playing with his version of When in Rome and also collaborating with other artists.
