Completely back on my feet and as usual when I'm on the mend I have more time to sit in front of the computer and work on RSA. I'm proud of all of my shows (1402 so far!) but the ones that I spend extra time listening and adjusting are always special to me. Plus it's really nice not to be sick! I don't always have great luck with bad food. This week we've got a great show for everyone as we get back to a little bit more aggressive and beat driven stuff this week.
Sadly this appears to be another rainy Sunday. The summer this year has taken direct aim at my cycling hobby as I swear damn near every Sunday has been rainy and bleah. But being a renaissance man, I have many hobbies. Including getting called by work at 7am. No cycling this weekend, and more importantly no smoke in the air to make me sound like I'm seriously hung over. Spent a little time out in the garden trying to coax a few things into growing and tossing some dead stuff. All very fascinating. Can the biggest AI labs simply walk into any market and replace the software companies already sitting there?Storm Ventures has spent 26 years building an answer for B2B founders. The firm has made close to 200 investments, backed 11 unicorns, and produced some of the cleanest enterprise exits in Silicon Valley, from AirGap Networks selling to Zscaler to earlier winners like Marketo and MobileIron. Its portfolio today runs from Tekion in automotive retail to Atomicwork in IT service management, Krisp in voice AI, and Synthpop in healthcare.Arun Penmetsa is a Partner at the firm. He built enterprise software at Oracle and Google before moving into venture, and he now leads Storm's work in AI, security, and digital health. In this conversation, he is unusually specific about how the decisions actually get made. He meets ten to twelve founders every week; the entire partnership makes only six to eight investments a year, and the single filter he trusts most is urgency. If a buyer can comfortably wait six to twelve months, the pain is not real, and the company is already in trouble.Arun is direct about the question every AI founder now gets asked, which is whether OpenAI or Anthropic will simply take their market. He answers that the foundation model companies will own a handful of core verticals and leave the rest, so the durable business is the one that owns the full stack between the model and the interface and delivers a real outcome inside law, healthcare, construction, or a market as unglamorous as convenience retail. He also lays out where he is placing his next bets, from physical AI and humanoid robots that can retool an assembly line on the fly to vertical companies like Tote that rebuild the software running gas stations and corner stores, where a single day of downtime can cost an owner tens of thousands of dollars. For like the first time this summer both the days and the weather aligned so that I could actually get out and do second ride of the year. Air was pretty clear of the fire smoke, but it did make me a little hoarse. Last week it looked like Mars outside. Feeling much much more human this week, so you'll have to listen to the dulcet tones of my voice that much longer. Actually, we're doing a slightly longer show than usual as I'll be away next weekend basking in the tropical sun of Edinburgh. I intend to eat so poorly that when I return to Canada I'll have to spend a month eating nothing but vegetables. But the just the idea of a Munchie Box intrigues me. EPISODE 146: New wave icon Howard Jones is very proud to announce the “Things Can Only Get Better” North American tour for summer, 2026. The feel-good 80s event of the summer features a bill curated and headlined by Jones himself with support from fellow British 80s greats Wang Chung, The English Beat and Modern English and will be hosted by SiriusXM's Richard Blade. A pioneer of electronic music, Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring scene for the past four decades, playing live in several different configurations including intimate solo shows and dates with his full high-tech band set-up. He first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers with “New Song”. His first two albums HUMAN'S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits. HUMAN'S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What Is Love?” In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: “Things Can Only Get Better,” “Life In One Day,” “No One Is To Blame,” and “Like To Get To Know You Well." Howard Jones has sold upwards of 10 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world. howardjones.comContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

Welcome back! Only a couple of weeks until my vacation, and I'm starting to get prepared! I've also been tossing around a thought for the past few months that I need to do another supplemental show. I think I'm going to make use of my musical "mid life crisis" and do something up to sorta encapsulate the late 80s and early 90s Thrash Metal. Kids need to learn who Exodus was. Especially beacuse a lot of music from that era had an environmental message. This week we're talking to Doublespeak, a synthpop supergroup featuring Vince Clarke of Erasure, Yazoo and Depeche Mode, Neil Arthur of Blancmange, and producer and synthesizer expert Benge. They've just released their self-titled debut album which features electropop covers of songs by The Carpenters, The Magnetic Fields, David Essex, Young Marble Giants, ABBA, and more. We talked separately with Vince Clarke first, and then Neil and Benge together and we all talked about how the project came to be, how they picked which songs to cover and which were the most difficult to do. We also discussed the projects future, including writing and recording a few Doublespeak originals, plus updates on new albums from Erasure, Blancmange, and Benge's band Wrangler, plus a little food talk, five records they think everyone should own, and more. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein
