Waiting out the latest "Snowpocalypse" here in SW Ontario. We're supposed to get something like 10 inches of snow today along with arctic winds. So today will be watching the storm in between movies and junk food. The prizes for the membership drive have arrived, I urge you to check out the video I posted on the FB group as well as BlueSky. Spent the week basically bedridden as I "recovered" from my flu last week, then proceeded to push myself too far. So I spent a few days taking my time and resting, and voila! I left the house and got RSA done today. It's nice to eat food. I remember that now. But it was nice to sit down and have some fun working on RSA instead of lying in bed. Apologies, you'll find in this weeks show that I was planning on posting the show earlier on Saturday, but before I could hit "publish" I got taken down with the flu. And we're back with the first show of 2026! For once when I started going through my inbox for material to play this week, there wasn't a huge bunch of discs from like August that I still have to go through. Maybe after 28 years(!) of doing this show I've managed to learn a bit. Or get organized. I'm sure it's just a coincidence. Welcome to the annual best of show! This year we go back through everything we've played over the course of 2025, condense the year into 16 tracks, and voila! I got some great suggestions from people, and had a few "obvious" ones written down for months. But it was worth it to listen to everything, a few gems always pop up that I've forgotten. Last week of the "normal" year as we present to you the penultimate episode of RSA for 2025. For those keeping track, this is episode #1367! I've gotten some good suggestions for the best of 2025 emailed to me! Only 2 more weeks until CHristmas is over and I give you my gift, an extra long show. I've begun ordering prizes for the 2026 membership drive. The theme is going to be "flat" to get around the craziness that is trying to mail anything to the USA. The homelab is all nice and fixed, but I never did get an offer for a stack of Hard Drives. :) Stuff like that is getting ridiculously expensive because of all of the Goddamned AI data centers which create nothing but heat. We've got a great show for everyone this week, as the first track I picked had a very fast tempo, and as I've said, that tends to spread to the rest of the show. Also, I begin picking tracks for the best of 2025. Good lord, how is it only 4 weeks until I have to get the show ready! Neuroklast - Succubus (feat. This weekend I get to play SysAdmin as my homelab (which stores all of my RSA material) had a disk failure in one of my servers. It's all parity protected, but I'm spending a good 20 hours moving data off another disk that I'm kinda suspicious of. If anyone wants to donate a stack of 16TB SATA drives to me, I wouldn't say no at this point. But because I have lost data in the distant past, I've already learned my lesson. But this doesn't directly affect RSA at all, as we've got a great show for everyone. A higher tempo than usual, but the first track I selected was 150 bpm(!), that sets the tone for the rest of the show! Things are more or less back to normal around here, as we prepare for the onset of Winter in Canada. This week I do put some emphasis on what the heck we're going to do about next years membership drive. I'm really looking for your feedback on what you'd like to receive in return for donations. I'm looking at Enamel pins (much like the Sanctuary pins that are on my "battle jacket"). Sadly the patches we did prior to the pandemic are insanely expensive now. If you have one, it's a collectiors item! THis wek we also expanded to 9 songs instead of the usual 8. In the new world of more singles than full length albums, we'll have to adapt and try to keep the quantity as high as the quality. :) XPQ-21 - Dance With The Devil Elektrostaub - Too Far From The Pack (Salva Maine) Aesthetic Perfection - We Bring The Beat Absurd Minds - Fractured (Autodafeh) Data Kino - Rock It Again Komission Z80 - Choose (Ruined Conflict) Destroy Me Again - The Shards Extize - Cyberghost Audiocall - Retailers! I apologize for missing last week, but apparently if you're unable to eat solid food for several days the pounds just melt away! I have some work to do on my health, but the work will be done. One thing that I forgot to mention in this weeks show is that this week we have Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth and Veterans day in the USA. Having stood on Tower bridge in London, and the docks in Hamburg I'm just glad that the idea of bombing either city now is such an inconceivable thing. Hamburg was also a significant visit for me because my Grandfather was a part of Operation Gomorrah. The first track is also dedicated to the people at ICE. My favourite time of the year. When the leaves are changing, the temperature drops a bit so we need a light jacket. Might be time to pull out my 90s battle jacket. So all of the Yanks are out protesting today (NO MORE KINGS), Europe is pre-drinking, and the west coast is just getting through brunch. Sounds like a perfect time to drop this weeks RSA! We delve ever so slighly into the ethics of using AI and what its place might be in music production. This also includes a snippet of an AI song that one of our long term listeners has been noodling with. Its quite eye opening. This episode uncovers the incredible, unlikely story of how the Pet Shop Boys' synth-pop hit, "Go West," was adopted by the passionate Napoli tifosi to become the soundtrack to the club's spectacular phoenix-from-the-ashes revival. We explore why the song's themes of unity and hope resonate so profoundly with the resilient spirit of Naples, making "going west" a metaphor for the team's ascent to European football's pinnacle. We dive into the electrifying pre-match ritual at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, where the iconic melody transforms 50,000 fans into the team's thunderous twelfth man, solidifying the song's legacy as one of football's most organic and powerful anthems. Episode 192: PRP/Synthpop Symphony Crossover: Red Flag Part 2 (with DJ Matt Williams) Brian and Sarah are once again joined by DJ Matt Williams, creator and host of the synth-tastic radio show Synthpop Symphony. Matt's show is aired on dozens of terrestrial radio stations around the world and can also be found on podcast platforms. In the previous episode, Brian, Sarah and Matt started a discussion about the San Diego-based duo Red Flag, whose well-crafted electronic tracks were heard in countless clubs at the end of the 1980s. Their debut album, Naïve Art, was released in 1989, and the three hosts shared both information on and memories of the album, touching on numerous other topics along the way. This episode dives into four tracks from Naïve Art, three of which were singles, and one which Brian and Sarah learned from Matt was at least considered as a single. The chart information Sarah has for the singles is primarily for the dance charts, although Brian does take great joy being able to use one of his 1980s pop chart books to confirm some information. Matt tells stories of receiving and playing the remixes in dance clubs. Sarah also has some single reviews, and in what may be a first for the show, a video review! The three hosts discuss each song in depth, but the conversation encompasses many other topics as well. The PRP hosts chat with Matt about the time and effort involved in planning a radio show playlist. Information Society member and famed producer Paul Robb is mentioned, along with the group T42. And once again, Depeche Mode makes the list of discussion topics; this time the focus is on Depeche Mode's influence on music. Episode 191: PRP/Synthpop Symphony Crossover: Red Flag Part 1 (with DJ Matt Williams) Brian and Sarah are thrilled to present the first in what will hopefully become a series of crossover episodes with DJ Matt Williams. Matt is the brains and the voice behind the amazing radio show Synthpop Symphony, which airs on radio stations in 60 countries and is also available for download on virtually all podcast platforms. As Matt states, “Synthpop Symphony is where the past, present, and future of synth-driven music collide.” And as PRP and Synthpop Symphony collide, the hosts shine a spotlight on a past synthpop group that often goes overlooked: Red Flag. In this first of two parts, Matt, Brian, and Sarah discuss Red Flag's history, the recording of their debut album, Naïve Art, and each person's history with the album. However, that's only the tip of the iceberg. The three also talk about cool radio stations, the demise of synthpop in the 90s, Depeche Mode's US Top 40 history, the history Razormaid, the comparison of bands like Red Flag, Cause & Effect, and Anything Box to Depeche Mode, the return of Tom Bailey, and the Red Flag Fan Club. It's a fun discussion that sets the stage for Part Two, where they'll dive deep into four selections from Naïve Art. And be sure to visit http://synthpopsymphony.com to learn more about DJ Matt Williams and his Synthpop Symphony radio show!
