Getting psyched to get the heck outta here for a few days, crossing my T's and dotting my I's, and while doing so I was listening to stuff and the outlines of an idea for a theme show were formed. I'm still in the planning stages, but I think we'll have something special when I come back for the 21st. But until then we've got a great show for everyone and I've been bopping around to it for a few days, so I think you'll like it too! I'm actually getting everything posted nice and early this week because I got up for my club Bike ride, and while I was in the shower it was cancelled due to the impending first heatwave of the year. While this is kids stuff compared to some places, I'm going to agree that cycling in temperatures including humidity reaching 43c (thats 110 in Freedom Units) is not a good idea. Discretion is the better part of valour and all that. But since I'm up nice and early I figured I'd get the show posted and have a cup of tea as I contemplate breakfast. Elektrostaub - Falling f. Award-winning Brisbane synth-pop artist Mardi Lumsden has long been known for her ethereal songwriting and shimmering sonic landscapes. But her sophomore album Slow Emotion came to life in a way that was as delicate and intimate as its title suggests—written asynchronously and collaboratively with her husband and producer, Pennay, in the quiet hours while their baby slept. This episode of The Magic of Songwriting podcast explores the creative journey behind Slow Emotion, and in particular the evolution of its standout track, “nineteen.”About Mardi and Andrew: Mardi Lumsden is an award-winning synth-pop charmer from Brisbane. Mardi spent 2020 writing happy music resulting in her sophomore album "Slow Emotion", an 8-track delight written in IHSC that transverses disco, indie pop and stargazer anthems. The title track was added to Double J and was called "another stellar success" by Obscure Sound.Andrew Pennay has spent his days teaching music in schools, lecturing in music education, and slowly working through a PhD in (not surprisingly) songwriting education. Nowadays everyone uses computers when making music…but the electronic New Wave scene is where it all started.

I actually made it out and got some sun this weekend. This of course left me crashed out on the couch for a bit, and then a little bird whispered in my ear "Oi! Dork! You have a radio show to post!" Ontario weather struck again, and while its nice and sunny, its downright cold in the small town I grew up in. So the weekend trip of nostalgia and family duties will have to wait until the end of the summer. But that just means that I have extra time this weekend, so RSA is out at the usual time! I doubt we'll be going back to the old "Summer Hours" where I'd post the show on Mondays. I don't live in the saddle anymore, so I have time for all of my various hobbies!

A quick heads up that I'm already hard at work on next weeks show. I'm going to be away most of next weekend, so I'm trying to get everything done ahead of time. Fingers crossed that I can get everything done on time (and its looking good) and I can just get home on Sunday evening and hit "Publish". Its been a good week though, having the extra time to myself meant I could listen to more music. While I can do that while working, I'll "lose" time where my attention is 100% on work, and then have to figure out how far back to go to restart. I just wish the weather had been better. A gray overcast day makes sense while we in Canada celebrate our ever increasingly anarchonistic holiday "Victoria Day". Traditionally this is known as the May two four weekend. Two four being common slang for a case of beer. Took a week off last week to get some stuff sorted out. Should called it a vacation weekend, but the fact is when your folks are gone for half the year that when they come back we make a point of visiting. I tried to sit down and finish the show last week, but I was burnt out. *I* sounded like hell, so I scrapped it and took a week off. Its better to recharge the batteries a bit than put out something substandard. I tried to let everyone know, but with the enshittification of social media, its hard to get the word out. We're not content to just talk about great synth-pop albums of the pivotal year of 1980...we wanted to share the discussion with musicians who created one of the great synth-pop albums of 1980! The album, you ask? Party In The War Zone by L.A. band Vivabeat, and we were fortunate enough to have bassist/songwriter Mick Muhlfriedel and keyboardist/vocalist Marina Muhlfriedel joining us. This surely must be one of the most remarkable stories we've heard of living on the precipice of the big time. They had the hooks and the looks. They were discovered by Peter Gabriel (who was inspired by the whistling hook in the band's "Man From China" to write "Games Without Frontiers) and signed to Charisma. Their song "The House Is Burning (But There's No One Home)" was prominently featured in the film Body Double, and the music video subsequently won an MTV Video Award. Their second incarnation included former Japan guitarist Rob Dean, contributing to their standing as the opening act to bands like Depeche Mode and Gary Numan. However, a series of unfortunate events and unscrupulous managers limited Vivabeat's shelf life. Fortunately, in 2024, Rubellan Remasters (www.rubellanremasters.com) re-issued Party In The War Zone on CD for the first time, as well as the vinyl-only compilation The House Is Burning: The Best of Vivabeat 1979-86.
