EPISODE 146: New wave icon Howard Jones is very proud to announce the “Things Can Only Get Better” North American tour for summer, 2026.  The feel-good 80s event of the summer features a bill curated and headlined by Jones himself with support from fellow British 80s greats Wang Chung, The English Beat and Modern English and will be hosted by SiriusXM's Richard Blade. A pioneer of electronic music, Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring scene for the past four decades, playing live in several different configurations including intimate solo shows and dates with his full high-tech band set-up.  He first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers with “New Song”. His first two albums HUMAN'S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits.  HUMAN'S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What Is Love?”  In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: “Things Can Only Get Better,” “Life In One Day,” “No One Is To Blame,” and “Like To Get To Know You Well." Die Teenagerin Sarah ist genervt. Genervt von der Uhrzeit, zu der sie zu Hause sein muss, genervt von ihrer strengen Stiefmutter, und vor allem genervt von ihrem Stiefbruder Toby, dem lauten, quengeligen Windelträger, für den sie Babysitter spielen muss, weil ihre Eltern ausgehen. Also macht sie das, was man als 16 Jährige halt so macht, wenn ein Baby einem den Abend vermiest: Sie beschwört vor ihrem Spiegel den Goblin König, er möge doch bitte kommen und Klein Toby mit sich nehmen. Dumm nur, dass ihr Wunsch erfüllt wird: Der Goblin König Jareth taucht mit seiner Gefolgschaft tatsächlich auf und entführt kurzerhand den nervigen Babybruder. Die reumütige Sarah will Toby um jeden Preis zurückhaben und Jareth gibt er auch ihre Möglichkeit: Wenn sie es schafft innerhalb von 13 Stunden sein Labyrinth zu durchqueren, darf sie ihren Bruder wieder in die Arme schließen. Sarah gewinnt in dem Zwerg Hoggle, dem Trollriesen Ludo und dem Fox Terrier Sir Didymus Mitstreiter und macht sich auf den beschwerlichen Weg durch verwirrende Gänge, mit Händen gefüllte Höhlen, Stinkesümpfe und die Kobolstadt, während Jareth in seinem Schloss mit Toby und den Kobolden eine wilde Party feiert. Die Reise ins Labyrinth aus dem Jahr 1986, der zweite große Jim Henson Fantasyfilm nach The Dark Crystal. Da dieser reine Puppenfilm ein großer Flop war, beschloss Henson für den Audience Appeal auch ein paar Menschen in dem Szenario zu platzieren, namentlich die Nachwuchsdarstellerin Jennifer Connelly und den Rockstar David Bowie… ihr wisst schon, Bowie in seiner 80s Form, die für alle Fans des Chamäleons zu seiner besten Schaffensphase zählt (Denn wer braucht schon eine Glamrock-Oper wie Ziggy Stardust oder eine Protopunk-Orgie wie Diamond Dogs, wenn er den süßen Synthpop von Tonight und Never let me down haben kann… aber ich schweife ab). Welcome back! Only a couple of weeks until my vacation, and I'm starting to get prepared! I've also been tossing around a thought for the past few months that I need to do another supplemental show. I think I'm going to make use of my musical "mid life crisis" and do something up to sorta encapsulate the late 80s and early 90s Thrash Metal. Kids need to learn who Exodus was. This week we're talking to Doublespeak, a synthpop supergroup featuring Vince Clarke of Erasure, Yazoo and Depeche Mode, Neil Arthur of Blancmange, and producer and synthesizer expert Benge. They've just released their self-titled debut album which features electropop covers of songs by The Carpenters, The Magnetic Fields, David Essex, Young Marble Giants, ABBA, and more.   We talked separately with Vince Clarke first, and then Neil and Benge together and we all talked about how the project came to be, how they picked which songs to cover and which were the most difficult to do. The Story of The Cravens: From Black Box Approach to Ata-tat and BeyondIn this episode we explore the history and evolution of The Cravens, a Lake Worth, Florida–based rock band rooted in the long-running creative partnership of brothers John and Bill Storch. Joining the conversation are drummer and percussionist Bill Meredith and guitarist David Simone.We trace John and Bill Storch's musical beginnings in the early 1980s with Black Box Approach, a synth-driven new wave band formed during their high school years. Active from roughly 1980 to 1983, the band reflected the era's shift from arena rock into punk, new wave, and electronic influences, earning regional attention and college radio airplay. During this time, they were also part of the broader South Florida music landscape, engaging with local venues, record stores, and a growing network of musicians shaping the scene.From there, the story follows the transition into Ata-tat, marking a move into alternative rock as the Storch brothers relocated to Boston and became part of the mid-1980s underground music scene. The group found radio success and continued strong college airplay while further developing the collaborative songwriting approach established in their earlier work.After this period, John and Bill Storch continued writing and collaborating in a variety of creative settings, including composing music for modern dance companies in Palm Beach County. Their work gradually shifted away from traditional band structures toward more experimental and instrumental compositions before reconnecting with the local music community.The episode captures the formation and evolution of The Cravens, which emerged around 2014 as an acoustic trio before expanding into a full band by 2016 alongside additional longtime collaborators from the local music scene.Note: Bassist and guitarist Dennis Ambrose was unfortunately unable to participate in the interview.

There were two Toronto bands that helped me bridge the genres. Malhavoc and DHI. Both combined aggressive guitars with sequencing and samples. Both were obviously very influential on me.
