We close out 1987 with a quirky one: Steve Martin's adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac: Roxanne, starring Daryl Hannah as the titular intellectual love interest of C.D. (Martin), a small-town fire chief with a brilliant mind and a prominent proboscis. This is a really fun way to end this series! Next up we'll have an entire month of Agnes Varda, starting with her first feature Cleo from 5 to 7, so start watching!
This week, the Dames are talking about love, true love as we discuss the beloved 1987 fairy tale classic, The Princess Bride. William Goldman adapted the script from his own novel. Rob Reiner directs the film which stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn and so many more. Be sure to come back next week when we finish out our 1987 romantic movie series with Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah in Roxanne.
After opening investigations into several media companies in recent months, The FCC has found its latest target– MSNBC. Why did FCC chairman Brenan Carr claim that specific broadcasts on MSNBC were not in “public interest?” Also, what’s behind the Writers Guild’s decision to block members from working on a Martin Scorsese produced film? Kim Masters and Matt Belloni investigate. Plus, Masters speaks with actress, activist, and filmmaker Daryl Hannah, whose new concert film, Coastal, offers an intimate look at her husband, the legendary Neil Young, on his 2023 solo tour. Hannah also recounts a painful experience with Harvey Weinstein on the Kill Bill press tour, and reveals what prompted her to proclaim “Slava Ukraini” at this year’s Oscars.
Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. In honor of Women's History Month, I've selected four films featuring what I like to call “Wonder Women.” These are women who are brave, kind, strong, and all-around wonderful. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list—simply four films that resonate with me personally as a woman, and you should watch, whether you're a woman or not. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)First up is the 1991 Oscar-nominated film, Fried Green Tomatoes. The film stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Tandy, among others. Fried Green Tomatoes is based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, who also wrote the first draft of the screenplay. This film flashes between the 1920s and the 1980s, looking at Wonder Women through all stages of life. No matter where you find yourself, Fried Green Tomatoes is a great film to enjoy with the wonderful women in your life. Steel Magnolias (1989)Next up is Steel Magnolias from 1989. Focusing on southern women's culture in the 1980s, Steel Magnolias highlights the friendship among six women who must persevere through difficult circumstances. Starring Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Tom Skerritt, Steel Magnolias expertly blends comedy and drama, making a great movie full of Wonder Women. 9 to 5 (1980)The second Dolly Parton film in today's line-up is 9 to 5. The film, in addition to Dolly Parton, features Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. Highlighting 1980s office politics that are unfortunately still all too relevant today, 9 to 5 tackles serious women's issues with humor, making their points even more effective and poignant. This is a great laugh after the tear-jerking drama after Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes. Alien (1979)The last film in our Wonder Women selections is 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, and Bolaji Badejo as the Xenomorph, Alien, is a phenomenal sci-fi horror film. Alien's leading wonder woman, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, is an amazing sci-fi heroine. She's smart, brave, and resourceful, totes a flamethrower, and has a kitty-cat sidekick. What more do you want in a film about a Wonder Woman? We hope you enjoy these films and come back and see us next week on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Who is "Woke Jesus"? It's the actual Jesus from the Bible—the dark-skinned Jewish revolutionary who advocated for feeding the poor and healing the sick. The Christian nationalists who use Trump's MAGA movement as a weapon against our democracy are also at war with Jesus, as this week's guest explains. By the strictest definition, doesn't that make Trump the anti-Christ? Investigative journalist Katherine Stewart, author of the new book Money, Lies, and God, examines the right-wing Libertarian elites taking over our democracy through white Christian nationalist foot soldiers and offers ways to fight back. Stewart is also the author of The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism and The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children. Her journey included witnessing Christian nationalist recruitment and hate campaigns take root in her child's public school. As Andrea discuses in the opening of this week's show, MAGA/Russia are weakening the U.S. from within (mass purge, trade war, declaring war on experts, etc.) so that we're scared and confused, and easier to conquer. We won't let them win. Thank you to everyone who joined Gaslit Nation's first book club last month! This week, like the sand-people of Arrakis and Beetlejuice audiences before us, we're afraid of worms (worms!) as guest Rachel Hadaway (of Rachel's Chart Chat on The People Are The Enemy) goes for a steeply inclined stroll with us to breathe the mountain air in beautiful Nelson, Washington as circle back to the coziness of the Steve Martin rom-com. It's 1987's Roxanne, directed by Fred Schepisi, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin opposite Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall, Rick Rossovich, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard, Damon Wayans and of course Nelson, British Columbia, which almost played itself! A landmark 80s film for Canadians seeing their country onscreen, north of the border it seems more beloved for its locations than its clever reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac for a modern context. But this is a funny movie with a romance that works, brought to us from the dusty DVR box of a long-time booster of our show who we were happy to finally bring on! Plus: As we put Halloween season behind us, Justin goes deep on the truly terrible Blade: Trinity. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along, Roxanne is not currently available to stream in Canada, but can be found on Amazon Prime in America at the time of publication. Other works referenced on this episode include Saturday Night, Challengers, Wicked, Blade, Blade II, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Witches of Eastwick, Practical Magic, V/H/S/94, So I Married An Axe Murderer, A Serious Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Reality Show Show, 8 Mile, The Lonely Guy, Review, Police Academy, The Muppet Babies, Set It Up, and Looney Tunes among others. We'll be back next week as No-Theme-ber continues... with what? We don't actually know yet. So keep it locked here to find out. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Her ingenious scheme to beat the charges? To kidnap again. (Kidnapping, Babies, and Blackmail) *** Before we knew it as tuberculosis, most knew it as consumption – and it was almost always fatal, with those who had it seemingly being consumed by the disease, which is probably how it got its name. So it should be no surprise that homes where the disease took up residence were devastated, and whether or not they are haunted by the paranormal, they are certainly haunted by the dark memories and energies of those who were consumed there. Including one particular home a doctor in 1915 will describe for us. (Consumption Cottage) *** Norfolk's Horning Village is not your typical residential area of living – the village slips back and forth in time every five years. And one family knows that's true, because they were stuck in one of the time slips. (Timeslip Village) *** When fans of the paranormal hear the name ‘Rendlesham', the first thing that springs to mind is an incident that happened over three nights around Christmas 1980, when it was said that several spaceships visited the nearby airbase. What they don't think of is Ariel the mermaid, or Daryl Hannah from the movie “Splash”. But maybe they should. (The Mermaid of Rendlesham) *** Isabella of France is a fantastically interesting historic figure, even more so because of how little-known she is. You'd think a queen who was known as a she-wolf would be something you might have read about in history class. (Isabella: She-Wolf of England) *** But first, the figure, who is known as 'Le Loyon' has been called Switzerland's answer to the Loch Ness Monster, wears a military uniform and a thick cloak, with a gas mask covering his or her face. What do Anthony Hopkins, Dan Aykroyd, Courtney Love, Daryl Hannah, Jerry Seinfeld, Albert Einstein, Heather Kuzmich, Elon Musk, Lionel Messi, Eminem, and Satoshi Tajiri have in common?Celebrity? Creativity? Fame? Fortune? Yes, all of them have these things to varying degrees. Each and every one of them also has (or in Einstein's case, had) autism. So does author, actor, autism advocate, and animal rights activist Daniel Keith Austin, creator of the children's book series, Chelsea's New Journey. I was especially interested in hosting Daniel on the show because there are a lot of misconceptions around what autism is and how people with it interact with the world. It's a topic that's near and dear to my heart because my nephew is on the spectrum. Daniel was raised with the core beliefs of striving to be a good and decent person who treats people well, does things for the overall benefit of mankind, and helps people lead better lives. He also grew up as one of four autistic siblings and experienced many challenges. He was a disruptive kid who struggled in an educational system that just wanted him to follow orders and behave while doing little to support him in learning to form relationships and communicate effectively. He didn't find out he had autism until he was 14 years old. In Daniel's case, you could say things were never “fine” – for him, Fine is a 4-Letter Word and always has been.In a moment, when you meet Daniel, you'll discover how his passion for writing, performing, and storytelling led him to create a series of children's books about Chelsea the Golden Retriever.Revolving around the life story of a Golden Retriever based on Daniel's childhood dog, this series breaks down and transforms complicated, contentious themes into an understandable, relatable tale that powerfully addresses themes of abandonment, the need for acceptance and belonging, and triumph over adversity through seemingly impossible challenges from the perspective of someone who lacks a human voice.Through Chelsea's eyes, Daniel invites you to join an engaging and thought-provoking story arc around Chelsea becoming a therapy dog for people on the autism spectrum.Daniel's hype song is “Something's Coming” from West Side Story.Resources:Daniel Keith Austin's websites: https://danielkeithaustin.com/ and https://www.chelseasnewbeginningbook.com/ Facebook: https://facebook.com/chelsea.the.golden.retrieverInstagram: https://instagram.com/chelseathegoldenretriever88/X (formerly Twitter): https://x.com/ChelseaTheGold2Invitation from Lori: Before we get to this thought-provoking, emotional conversation that delivers a new perspective on thriving with autism, let me mention that in my special guide, 5 Easy Ways to Start Living the Sabbatical Life, you can discover, step-by-step, how you can stop settling for “fine” and look at your life with a fresh set of eyes. Even if, like many people in today's high-speed world, you're not in a position to take a month or year-long sabbatical. You know how you normally hear the disclaimer “Don't try this at home!” In this case, you CAN try this at home. And not just “try,” DO. Once...
Lisa Leaheey returns to the show to discuss the 1988 horror comedy High Spirits, featuring the likes of Steve Guttenberg, Daryl Hannah, Peter O'Toole, Beverly D'Angelo, Liam Neeson, Jennifer Tilly, Peter Galagher, and more!
Quick note for our listeners. Apologies for minor technical issues, we recorded this "campfire episode" during a power outage on the first day of Mercury in Retrograde. Also, trigger warning for a brief mention of suicide in our coverage of the first film. As we round out the summer, SITC is setting the scene on theme with three films featuring sex on the beach (the action, not the cocktail). Torie and Maggie kick off with the Brooke Shields blockbuster and kissing cousin's classic THE BLUE LAGOON (1980). Maggie is thrilled with Torie's burgeoning bi-sexuality specific to the one Phoebe Cates in the atrocious Blue Lagoon ripoff, PARADISE (1982). Throuples and lizards run rampant on the island of Santorini in SUMMER LOVERS (1982) starring a young Daryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher.
Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode take a deep ‘dive' into the world of water to mark the 40th anniversary this summer of the joyous romantic comedy Splash hitting our screens. Splash features Tom Hanks' leading man debut as he meets and falls for mermaid Daryl Hannah in New York, before they finally swim off into the sunset together. From The Little Mermaid through Miranda to The Lure, mermaids have a long rich history in the movies.Mark talks to director Agnieszka Smoczyńska about her 1980s set Polish mermaid musical The Lure. They discuss cinema's fascination with the mermaid myth.Ellen looks back into cinema history to explore the films of Esther Williams - nicknamed the Million Dollar Mermaid - a swimmer turned actress whose ‘aquamusicals' in the 40s and 50s featured elaborate synchronised swimming sequences and made waves at the box office. She speaks to synchronised swimming choreographer Mēsha Kussman and friend of the show Lillian Crawford about the enduring appeal and surprising legacy of the aquamusical.Producer: Queenie Qureshi-Wales A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

What is Hannah's timeline when it comes to someone she's romantically involved with revealing they're part fish? Just one of the big questions in this week's Rated or Dated, as we go back to 1984 to watch Mick's pick of Ron Howard's Splash, a fish-out-of-water rom-com, in which Tom Hanks falls in love with Daryl Hannah as a mermaid. It also stars John Candy. Will that be enough to win Candy fan Jen over? Is it really a happy ending or does it finish on a major plot hole? Asks Neil to please name his band after the mystic who met George Armstrong Custer at Little BigHorn, and Neil, open your set with Cortez the Killer. Let in the Earth radicals from where? Who are they? … let the unknown arrestees take the stage to shout for the Earth's life. Ask dazzling Daryl Hannah, can she please produce the harmonizing tree-huggers from the third row. As your hits take us to our memories, may nostalgia never be the same again, because only illegal Earth actions will give us a ride home from the concert.
Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks came, saw, swam, and conquered the box office in Ron Howard's hit, Splash. Audiences couldn't get enough of the boy-meets-mermaid romcom back in 1984. Who could blame them? With iconic scenes (lobster, anyone?), cool underwater sequences, and great supporting work from John Candy, Splash was an all-around crowd pleaser. But now, forty years later, will our common sense still allow us to get lost at sea? Does Allen even deserve true love? And why is Madison so horny? The Old Roommates set sail on a wave of nostalgia, romance, and maybe (just maybe) a little trauma, all through their middle-aged lens. The Back To The Blockbuster team is looking back at The Bride's final stand of bloody retribution for the 20th anniversary of Kill Bill: Volume 2. Written and directed by Questin Tarantino, it is the second part of Kill Bill, and stars Uma Thurman as the Bride, who continues her campaign of revenge against the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, and Vivica A. Fox) and their leader Bill (David Carradine), who tried to kill her and her unborn child.
“I've killed a hell of a lot of people to get to this point, but I have only one more. The last one. The one I'm driving to right now. The only one left. And when I arrive at my destination, I am gonna kill Bill.” We watched “Kill Bill: Volume 2” with our friend Nikolas Romero and you and I have unfinished business. Originally planned as one long movie but split in two for various reasons, Volume 2 stands apart from Volume 1 in so many ways. In Vol 1 Uma Thurman's “The Bride” went on a stylized, gore filled killing spree, while here, her focus shifts from revenge to reuniting with her daughter. The body count in drastically lowered but the action set pieces are just as amazing. And speaking of Daryl Hannah – we learn how Elle Driver lost her eye, we get some great dialogue between her and Budd (Michael Madsen) and that fight scene… MTV movie award winner for Best Fight 2005 indeed! Welcome to your favorite movie podcast, Not a Bomb!! This is the podcast where we revisit some of the biggest box office failures in cinema history and explore whether they deserve a second chance. We are incredibly grateful for all the support we've received over the last 200 episodes and we look forward to many more. For this special occasion, we decided to discuss the seminal science fiction film, Blade Runner. Despite its status as a thought-provoking and visually stunning work of art, the initial release of the film was a commercial flop. We also talk about the 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049, which strikes a perfect balance between building on the legacy of the original and standing on its own as a great film. Unfortunately, the sequel also bombed and failed to make a profit for the studios. To delve into these two iconic science-fiction works, we welcomed a special guest, Cam, offering a Gen Z perspective. This episode wouldn't have been the same without Cam, and we're excited to have him share his insights on this captivating futuristic saga.Blade Runner is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, William Sanderson, Brion James and Joe Turkel.Blader Runner 2049 is directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Caral Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista and Jared LetoIf you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com or Contact Us - here. “Revenge is a dish best served cold” - Old Klingon proverb We got to our first Quentin Tarantino film on the podcast, and we picked the one movie of his filmography the queer community can all agree on. Kill Bill Vol. 1! Uma Thurman kicks major butt here, and it's one of the most iconic female roles of the 2000s. After an assassin is betrayed on her wedding day, she awakes from a coma, and goes after her fellow assasins who betrayed her. Seriously the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad DiVAS is filled out with equally fierce women we are obessed with. Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, and Lucy Liu are all serves. We talk about all the film references that Tarantino drew on when creating his hightened cinimeatic world the Bride lives in, how Uma should have made the best actress lineup, and what is it about the first volume that resonates with us the most. We'll be covering Vol. 2 next week! "How is she? She's... she's a *mermaid*! I don't understand. All my life, I've been waiting for someone, and when I find her, she's a fish." We watched "Splash"(1984) directed by Ron Howard and we wish, we wish, we wish we were a fish. Tom Hanks really earns his reputation as the "everyman" in this movie and his chemistry with the ethereal Daryl Hannah is off the charts. They just don't make fantasy movies like they did in the '80s. The script is still funny as hell with Hanks and John Candy playing so well off each other as brothers and Hannah's Madison stealing every scene she's in. At times it really plays like a live action updated Little Mermaid but some of the best moments come from what the script doesnt tell us. Did Madison make a deal with a Sea Witch to get her legs? Will Allen get a tail if stays with Madison? Did the events in Freddie's letters to Penthouse Forum really happen? Ron Howard trusted the audience to fill in the blanks and Splash is a better movie for it. And by the way - Disey+ removed the weird CGI hair extensions so we can marvel at Daryl's bum - as Ron always intended. “He looks like a 1980's standup comedian!” - Andrew on Deckard's clothing On this week's episode, W❤️M month takes us to 2019 Los Angeles to chat about Royal Rid's magnificent science fiction classic, Blade Runner! How stunning is the confidence of this film? Was Rutger Hauer ever better in a role? Is there a weirder coat in cinema than the one James Hong sports in this? How creepy are William Sanderson's eerie toy “friends”? Who would't want to administer the Voight-Kampff Test on someone? And should George Lucas take a look at this Final Cut to see how you can actually make a decent “special edition” of your movie? PLUS: M. Emmet Walsh's character Bryant turns out to be a porno parody enthusiast! Blade Runner stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, William Sanderson, Joe Turkel, Joanna Cassidy, James Hong, and Brion James as Leon; directed by Ridley Scott.
