Phia Exiner is a composer, musician, and songwriter who's hard to categorise (in the very best way). Phia first gained a cult following in Europe with her innovative approach to the kalimba thumb piano, using loop and effect pedals to create mesmerizing soundscapes. Since returning to Melbourne, she's transformed the Australian choral landscape by founding Melbourne Indie Voices, a non-traditional community choir that has grown from intimate sessions in her Fitzroy front room, to over 350 members …or maybe even 500!..., to selling out iconic venues, and performing with Australian legends like Paul Kelly and Clare Bowditch. Beyond her groundbreaking choral work, Phia has been composing for film and television while releasing her own albums, including her upcoming third release "When I'm Holding You, I'm Holding Me." The feature track "Pick Me Up (Don't Put Me Down)" showcases her return to her jazz roots and explores the profound transformation of motherhood—written in those precious moments while her newborn son slept. Throughout all her musical journeys, Phia's authentic voice and playful musicality continue to shine through. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our second Gloria Grahame Acteur-Oeuvre-view episode includes a curious under-use of our acteur in the all-around baffling musical comedy It Happened in Brooklyn (nevertheless memorable for the chemistry between Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Durante), and a judicious use of her by RKO in Edward Dmytryk's anti-fascist noir Crossfire (also 1947). We try to work out just what Grahame's ongoing avant-garde skit with Paul Kelly (as "The Man") brings to Dmytryk's portrait of a dysfunctional post-war America. The musician reflects on the epic evolution of her singing from practical childhood speech therapy to sacred musical fluency.Meg Washington was born in a musical home in Port Moresby, where her parents had met as Australian expats.Meg and her sister spent a lot of their time watching classic Hollywood musicals and also down at the local yacht club where their dad DJ'd every Saturday night.Singing became something Meg was encouraged to do herself after she developed a stutter as a little girl. And eventually it grew from a therapy into a thrill.Meg's stutter was something she did her best to disguise while building her career as a singer and songwriter in Australia. But after going public about her speech impediment in a TedX Talk, Meg realised she no longer cared about hiding who she was. This honesty led to a whole host of exciting new opportunities – including becoming the voice of Calypso in Bluey, and making a film with her husband based on the iconic Paul Kelly song, “How To Make Gravy”.This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, parenting, artists, music-making, Hugo Weaving, reflection, family dynamics, Australian music scene, Christmas movies, motherhood, TedX, Ted Talk, public speaking, speech impediments, speech therapy, Papua New Guinea, PNG, expats, Australian expats, Christianity, religion, spirituality, The Deb, Rebel Wilson, The Killers, Hot Fuss, Batflower Records.

During the lunch break, Corbin Middlemas sits down with legendary Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly for a special conversation. Join Grandstand at Lunch on ABC Sport as they blend the worlds of music and cricket in this memorable segment!
With special guest: Stuart Coupe… in conversation with Bill Kable Paul Kelly is woven into the fabric of Australia. But it was not always so, as our guest today Stuart Coupe tells us. After first picking up a guitar at the age of 18 and writing his first song at 20, it did take a while and a number of rejections before Paul Kelly was accepted as a performer. In his book called Paul Kelly: the man, the music and the life in between, Stuart shows that he knows his subject well; so well that he can add this book to the canon on Paul Kelly’s life which already includes Paul Kelly’s lengthy autobiography. It is exciting to delve into the good and the bad parts of Paul Kelly’s life. From a big and loving secure family, who were motivated on the big issues of the day, Paul has emerged on the national scene. He is our storyteller but he could also have been one of our favourite sportsmen if things had turned out differently. Paul showed a lot of ability in cricket, Australian Rules football and also tennis. All that Australian sporting life as well as a taste of University and hard manual labour has informed what he can tell us about ourselves. Podcast (mp3)

Paul Kelly is one of the leading artists making music in Australia and given his remarkable legacy — consisting of some 29 albums and a career that extends back nearly four decades — he rightfully deserves his place on that pantheon. His new album, Fever Longing Still, marks his first new collection in six years, not counting the various compilations and collections that have helped to reinforce his status as a remarkable singer/songwriter worthy of international repute. Recorded in tandem with longtime collaborators — Peter Luscombe (drums), Bill McDonald (bass), Dan Kelly (guitar), Cameron Bruce (keys), and Ash Naylor (guitar) — it may come across as more of a band effort overall, but it continues to provide the sardonic wit that Kelly is so well known for. His songs are always profoundly engaging, and whether opting for a jaunty reprieve, arched enthusiasm, a mix of tenderness and tenacity to an equal degree. The fact that the album title is lifted from a work by William Shakespeare, one of Kelly's literary idols, testifies to the fact that his reputation for literacy, emotional expression and an everyman sensibility is what makes his music relatable and affecting. Consequently, when Mr. Kelly offers his insights to Lee and Billy courtesy of My Backstage Pass, it's both revelatory and refreshing in every way. Click here to learn more about The Handwritten Heritage Cookbook Starter Kit Welcome and Happy Thanksgiving!!! This is a very special episode of The Storied Recipe podcast! Rather than diving deep into one story, we're diving deep into one holiday - telling the story of Thanksgiving from the perspective of almost 30 families. I want to personally thank every single contributor for taking their time to make this episode for us. These vignettes, sometimes funny, often poignant, and so very relatable have cheered my Thanksgiving season and helped me slow down and remember, reflect, and above all choose gratitude this season. In fact, my original plan was to cram this episode in, almost as a bonus or extra episode, but the more I listened to your stories, the more I realized I wanted to lengthen this Thanksgiving season. We begin, surprisingly enough, not with an American, but with a Greek-Australian who reminds us that far, far from being a national holiday belonging to one or two countries, Thanksgiving is an ancient tradition. Practicing gratitude is a tenant, teaching, and calling of every religion, it is, in fact, a need of the human heart. Listen to The Thanksgiving Episode Now! More Episodes for Your Thanksgiving Season! The Gratitude Episode Another crowd-sourced episode from the Storied Recipe Community. Contributors share the things, big and small, for which they are thankful. Once again, the monthly new release episode is expanded to a two part extravaganza! This week’s show is split between “friends of the show” and long time veterans of the business. The “friends” sections include hometown heroes (Off Contact), a fellow Real Punk Radio personality (Intrusive Thoughts vocalist Greg “Rock ‘n’ Roll Manifesto” Lonesome), a couple of Big Stir Records new tunes, and quite a few email submissions. As for the “veterans”, it’s amazing how much material some of these artists have put out over the years. The new one by Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly is his 29th abum. The Fleshtones have probably put out an equal amount of material. Only Ones leader Peter Perrett is back with a new album, and the Pixies, The Effigies, Nick Piunti, and others have a lengthy discography. Plus, we have the monthly new freebies by Friends of Cesar Romero and Vista Blue! For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
