I have this imaginary story of what a composer does all day - and it's based on Mozart and Beethoven biopics and a sort of La Boheme-ish romantic image of starving artists. In this generous interview, Eric Malmquist takes us behind the scenes of a recent commission and offers great tips for anyone wanting to work in our business! Eric Malmquist (b. 1985) writes earnestly heartfelt and engaging music. He draws on a deep love of early music and modern influences to produce works that are focused and emotional. He has been commissioned and performed by the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago, Baroque on Beaver Island, Chicago Composers Orchestra, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, tubist Scott Tegge, historical keyboardist Charles Metz, historical flutist Leighann Daihl Ragusa, Chatter, Constellation Men's Ensemble, the International Chamber Artists, the Newberry Consort and the Wicker Park Choral Singers. Recent performances include City Music with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Accelerando Strings; Open, Clear & Free, a 25-minute men's choir cycle on parks for Constellation Men's Ensemble; A History of Fatherhood in Sante Fe and Albuquerque with Chatter; and a concerto grosso for Baroque on Beaver Island entitled Great Lake Music. His music has been performed across the US and has been featured repeatedly on 98.7WFMT. Giacomo Puccini war vermutlich der letzte komponierende Weltstar der Oper. Noch heute locken La bohème, Madame Butterfly oder Tosca auch solches Publikum in die Opernhäuser, das sich dorthin gewöhnlich nicht verirrt, und erinnern darin an ein mit Puccini zu Ende gegangenes Zeitalter, in dem die Oper für eine kurze Zeit ihrer Geschichte (vor allem in Italien) eine tatsächlich populäre Kunstform war. Der 1858 im soeben toskanisch gewordenen Lucca geborene Puccini war am 29. November 1924 in Brüssel einer Krebserkrankung erlegen. Viele daraufhin erschienene Nachrufe betonten die schon damals absehbare enorme musiktheaterhistorische Bedeutung des Verstorbenen. Der Hamburgische Correspondent hält es in seinem kurzen Nekrolog am 3. Dezember eher persönlich-anekdotisch – und kommt dem, wie wir auch hier erfahren, eher schüchternen, gerne so titulierten Meister der ‘piccole cose‘ Puccini damit womöglich deutlich näher. To celebrate this milestone The Green Room 42 presents “Lights, Camera, Lerner and Loewe” on November 5th at 9:30pm. And the special guest of the evening is Steven Warner, who was the child actor in the title role alongside Broadway luminaries like Richard Kiley, Bob Fosse, Donna McKechnie, and Gene Wilder. Two other movie musicals also celebrating anniversaries this fall are Brigadoon, which has enchanted audiences for 70 years with its tale of love and a mystical village, as well as My Fair Lady, the timeless classic reaching its 60th anniversary. And each of these three musicals will be brought to life with some of the finest voices on and off Broadway. This one-night-only concert features Grammy Award nominee Mykal Kilgore (Motown, Hair), Tony Award nominee Jane Summerhays (Me and My Girl, A Chorus Line), Tony Award Honoree Ben Davis (Once Upon a Mattress, La Boheme), E. Clayton Cornelious (Ain't Too Proud), and Ellis Gage (White Rose, James & the Giant Peach). Warner will reprise songs he sang in The Little Prince. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Logan Murrell, who is a singer and songwriter. Frank asks why Logan changed her Instagram handle to include the word vibes. He was surprised to learn he needed to add 12 pounds of chlorine that day and 8 pounds each subsequent day for a week. Logan discovers that she and Frank both claim 22 as their favorite number. Logan can use the strangers' stories as inspiration for a song. Frank can't figure out how Logan or anyone can write a melody. Logan offers to make a song out of Frank's story about birds in his garage. Frank has made up songs in improv shows, usually to the tune of an opera song. Logan and her husband have two children. She is working on an album of sentimental songs. She plays a sample of her song “Moon and Stars” on her guitar. Sir Antonio Pappano is one of the world's most acclaimed conductors. He started work at the age of ten as an accompanist for his father, who worked as a singing teacher. After leading orchestras in Brussels and Oslo, Pappano was appointed as musical director of the Royal Opera House in 2002. Stepping down after 22 years leading Covent Garden, he has joined the London Symphony Orchestra as chief conductor. Antonio Pappano was knighted in 2012 and conducted the orchestra at the coronation of King Charles III in 2023. An award winning recording artist, he has conducted on over 70 live and studio albums.Antonio Pappano tells John Wilson about his upbringing in a central London council flat, the son of Italian immigrants, and his love of music from an early age. He recalls the significance of receiving his grade 5 piano examination result by post, "a lightbulb moment” in which he realised what he wanted to do with his life. He also describes his parents' grief after the death of his baby sister, which led to the Pappano family moving to Connecticut, where Antonio continued his musical tuition under a local piano teacher called Norma Verrilli and composer Arnold Franchetti. His professional career was nurtured by conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim who employed Pappano as his assistant for six years, a period in which he learned the art of conducting. But bohemianism was, maybe still is, about much more than just frightening the horses.The writer Virginia Nicholson recently told the Today programme that "in a sense, we are all bohemians today".But what is a bohemian, how do you spot one, and might you be a boho, too?"Bohemian" was originally a term with pejorative undertones given to Roma gypsies, commonly believed by the French to have originated in Bohemia, in central Europe.The Oxford English Dictionary's definition mentions someone "especially an artist, literary man, or actor, who leads a free, vagabond, or irregular life, not being particular as to the society he frequents, and despising conventionalities generally".But the connotation rapidly became a romantic one. From its birth in Paris in the 1850s, and the huge success of Murgier's play Scenes de la vie de Boheme, the ethic spread rapidly.Gypsy clothes became all the fashion, sparking a style which lives on today through lovers of boho-chic like Sienna Miller and Kate Moss. And artists and poets from Baudelaire to van Gogh characterised bohemian ideals.Its foundations in the Romantic movement of the 19th Century imbued bohemians with an almost quasi-religious sense of purpose.In Puccini's opera La Boheme, the poet Rodolfo and his friends do not shiver in their Parisian garret where Mimi's hand is famously frozen merely because of their poverty. Theirs, as Rodolfo has it, is a higher, if more sensual, calling.I am a poet!What's my employment? Writing.Is that a living? Hardly.I've wit though wealth be wanting,Ladies of rank and fashionAll inspire me with passion;In dreams and fond illusions,Or castles in the air,Richer is none on earth than I.Although steeped in its French roots, the bohemian ideal transferred easily to many countries and cultures.In Britain, the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the aesthetic movement of the 19th Century imbued bohemianism with a dangerous, dashing, social cachet. Later, the exploits of the Bloomsbury group - one of whom was Nicholson's grandmother, Vanessa Bell - thrust it into the cultural limelight.Across the Atlantic, poets and writers like Jack Kerouac, William S Burroughs and Paul Bowles led their own offshoot. And the playwright Arthur Miller's prose conjures the musty essence of that temple of American bohemia, Manhattan's Chelsea Hotel, where "there are no vacuum cleaners, no rules and shame"."Everyone has a view of what the bohemian is," says Nicholson. "The bohemian is an outsider, defines themselves as an outsider and is defined by the world as an outsider... A lot of people regard them as subversive, elitist and possibly just a little bit immature."Bohemians were typically urban, liberal in outlook, but with few visible political passions and, above all, creative. Though critical of organised religion, they were keen - witness the pre-Raphaelites and Oscar Wilde - to defend and explore the religious spirit.Above all, they defied the constrictions of hearth and home and the false morality which they believed underpinned it.In essence, bohemianism represented a personal, cultural and social reaction to the bourgeois life. We tease Vidor's auteur preoccupations out of these four early films—The Sky Pilot (1921), Peg o' My Heart (1922), Wild Oranges (1924), and La Bohème (1926)—and find a common focus on the successful, frustrated, or warped self-realization of his heroines. Rachael Watts has spent her life hiding a secret. Now 40, she was seven years old when Russell Bishop - known as the Babes in the Wood murderer - abducted, attacked and sexually assaulted her in 1990. It is a crime that should never have happened, as back in 1987, Russell Bishop had been charged with the murders of two nine-year-olds, Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway. But police were unable to secure a conviction when a series of prosecution blunders meant evidence and testimonies failed to stand up in court. Bishop was able to walk free and three years later he abducted and attacked Rachael, leaving her for dead. Miraculously she survived and it was her testimony which finally meant Bishop was convicted and put behind bars, despite him protesting his innocence. However, in 2018, forensic scientists presented new DNA evidence and Bishop received two life sentences for the murders of Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway. Ever since her attack, Rachael's family have fought to protect her privacy, hoping she could lead as normal life as possible. Rachael has never done a broadcast interview about what happened to her. But since Russell Bishop's death in January this year, she decided she wanted to tell her story. Danielle de Niese has been hailed as 'opera's coolest soprano' by New York Times Magazine. It's a question the black British charity boss Ngozi Fulani was asked repeatedly at an event earlier this week at Buckingham Palace, she's told the BBC the experience was 'abuse'. Lady Hussey has resigned since the incident. The Palace described the remarks as 'unacceptable and deeply regrettable'. A spokesperson for Prince William said 'racism has no place in our society'. Barton hung up his basketball shoes after high school and decided to pursue music; specifically vocal performance. He never sang at Davis High School, but when he arrived in San Diego, CA for college, he went for it! Barton sang in operas like "Marriage of Figaro" and "La Boheme," took acting classes, and performed a solo concert to receive his BA in Music. Before graduation, he spent a year in Aix-en-Provence studying French and traveling Europe and North Africa. Barton's two trips to Morocco instilled in him a curiosity and profound respect for the diverse cultures of West Africa. Barton spent two years in Diadjibine, a small village of 2,500 people in Southern Mauritania, West Africa. As a Peace Corp volunteer, he taught English, helped build water pumps, and started a solar-powered computer center. The time in Mauritania shaped Barton's mindset on the importance of community, teamwork, leadership, and supporting hard-working people who don't have the resources Americans have at their fingertips. After Peace Corps, Barton moved to New York City to pursue singing and acting. He was accepted into the Maggie Flanigan Studio and spent two years studying Meisner technique and writing a one man show about what he learned as a Peace Corps in West Africa. His show opened up new doors for him and he performed it around the country. On one of his trips, he traveled to Austin, TX where he met Valerie. Barton moved to Austin after graduating from the Acting Studio and four months later, they were married. When Barton moved to Austin in 2007, he became a personal trainer. concurrently, Barton created a voluntourism company taking people to East and West Africa to do volunteer work and enjoying Safaris. He was introduced to Camp Gladiator in 2012 and his love for performing and passion for fitness made Camp Gladiator a perfect fit. He sold his tour company and went all in to his new role with Camp Gladiator. The Mindset Forge Podcast is Barton's newest passion.
