If the day has been full, or your mind is still turning over what has been, this moment is for you. This is a prayer to settle your thoughts and rest in the goodness of God. We are praying from the words of Jesus in the Lord's Prayer — “Deliver us from evil.” Father, as the day comes to a close, we draw near to You. Not holding on to the details of what has been. Not worrying about what tomorrow may bring. But resting here, in Your presence. You are the God of hope. And even now, You are filling hearts with peace. So we pause here. We let the day settle. We allow our thoughts to slow. We gently place everything that has been into Your care. So I release the thoughts that are still active. I release the small worries that linger. I release the need to replay the day in my mind. I place it all in Your hands. And now, I receive. I receive peace over my mind. I receive joy that is quiet and steady. I receive hope that carries me into tomorrow. I receive. And now I rest. Not with tension. Not with uncertainty. But with a calm and steady heart. God is with you now. You are not alone tonight. In this episode of The STR Data Lab, Jamie Lane sits down with returning guest Mark Simpson to unpack how AI is rapidly reshaping the STR landscape—and what hosts and property managers need to do right now to stay ahead. From London conference “carnage” to real-world AI experiments generating thousands in bookings, Mark shares a front-row view of how operators are no longer just using tech—they're building it. The conversation dives into the rise of AI-powered workflows, custom-built tools, and “AI chiefs of staff” that can analyze, optimize, and even run parts of your business. The result? A shift from reactive hosting to proactive, data-driven growth. But this isn't just about automation—it's about strategy. What should schools really be teaching the next generation? In this episode, Spencer sits down with Tomas Duckling, Headmaster of one of the most prestigious schools in the UAE, to explore the pressures shaping modern education, the role of parents in an increasingly competitive system, the impact of technology and AI on learning and why the future of education must focus on building good humans, not just high achievers. From London's nightclub scene to global handstand workshops, Miles Mortensen didn't find yoga through flexibility or discipline. He found it because he was struggling, and it changed the way he related to his mind, his body and his life.In part one of this conversation, we sit down with international teacher and movement educator Miles Mortensen to talk about the real reason many people start yoga, and why the practice isn't actually about poses at all.Miles shares how yoga entered his life during a period of anxiety, body image struggles and burnout, not as a fitness routine, but as a way to understand himself. What began as a coping tool eventually became a lifelong exploration of movement, teaching and self awareness. We also dive deep into one of the most controversial topics in modern yoga: cross-training. Why are yogis often expected to perform advanced poses without any conditioning? And what happens when we bring strength training, circus arts and rehabilitation work into yoga spaces? This episode explores:Why yoga doesn't “fix” your problems, but changes your relationship with themThe hidden injuries behind traditional yoga cultureWhy conditioning, weights and bands might be essential for healthy yoga practiceThe danger of blindly following cuesWhy questioning teachers should be encouraged, not discouragedThe importance of updating yoga education with evolving scienceMiles challenges the idea that yoga must look a certain way and instead reframes it as a broader exploration of connection, curiosity and personal growth. If you've ever wondered why some classes feel incredible and others don't, or why your body responds differently than expected, this episode will make you rethink how yoga is taught and practiced.Part two continues the conversation into mindset, philosophy and what actually creates progress in practice.About MilesMiles grew up in Sydney, Australia. In this episode of Building Doors, host Lauren Karan sits down with Mark Simister, a globally experienced program leader who has spent three decades reshaping how infrastructure is delivered. From London's crumbling water network to disaster recovery in Queensland and Christchurch, and ultimately transforming Sydney Water into one of the world's top-performing programs, Mark's story proves that collaboration is not a buzzword. It is a system that works when leaders are brave enough to implement it.Mark opens up about his unconventional journey from the British Army to hydrogeology to major program delivery. He shares inside stories from rebuilding regions after natural disasters, pioneering early contractor involvement, cutting years out of procurement cycles, and leading one of the most influential collaborative frameworks in Australia.Whether you work in water, transport, energy, major projects, or leadership more broadly, this conversation will challenge you to rethink how teams engage, how contracts shape behavior, and how cultural clarity lifts productivity. Mark shows what happens when you replace fear-based systems with trust-based delivery: better outcomes, higher morale, and programs people are proud to be part of.What You'll Learn in This Episode:Leadership & Career Journey:How Mark went from the British Army to hydrogeology to multimillion-dollar program leadership. Why early exposure to NEC contracts shaped his lifelong passion for collaboration. How major disaster events (2011 floods, Christchurch earthquake) taught him the power of co-location and shared purpose.Collaboration & High-Performance Delivery:Why early-contractor involvement removes waste before it starts. How co-located teams eliminate rework and build trust. Why standardized contracts accelerate decisions and cut procurement delays. How shared KPIs and open-book data create accountability instead of adversarial behavior.Procurement Reform & Industry Challenges:Why traditional tendering creates fear, inefficiency, and poor outcomes. How Sydney Water shifted from adversarial contracting to 10-year partnership frameworks. How behavioral scoring using organizational psychologists created world-class team alignment. Why governance should enable, not police, major programs.Culture, People & LegacyWhy emotional intelligence matters as much as engineering intelligence. How embedding finance, communications, and support staff into frontline teams boosts morale. Why Mark believes mature engagement between owners and contractors must define Australia's next decade of delivery. What meaningful legacy looks like when billions of public dollars are on the line.Key Quotes from Mark Simister:“I want to see people enjoying being at work. I want to see a maturity in the engagement between owner and contractor.”“Everyone will work in a spirit of mutual trust and cooperation, that's written into NEC, and it changes everything.”“Get what you want. Get what you're really striving for. If you want something, plan it clearly from the beginning.”“When disaster hits, people turn up. Silver just broke the $50 mark last week, and it's stirring up the biggest buzz the bullion market's seen in decades. From London's sudden silver shortage to record-breaking lease rates, the pressure behind this move is unlike anything since the Warren Buffett era. Gold's holding strong near $4,000, and demand from both investors and industry is pushing supply to its limits. Listen now as senior analyst James Anderson breaks down what's really driving this historic silver surge—and what it means for everyday Americans watching from the sidelines. Silver hit a historic milestone: Silver officially closed above $50 an ounce 10/10/2025 — the highest nominal weekly close ever in U.S. dollars. It's a major psychological mark the market's been eyeing for years. London's running short on big silver bars: 1,000-ounce bars — the kind traded between banks and refiners — are in tight supply. Lease rates in London skyrocketed to levels not seen since Warren Buffett's silver play back in 1998.
The war that we now call the American Revolution was not only fought in the colonies with muskets and bayonets. On both sides of the Atlantic, artists armed with paint, canvas, and wax played an integral role in forging revolutionary ideals. In The Painter's Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution (Harvard UP, 2025), Dr. Zara Anishanslin charts the intertwined lives of three such figures who dared to defy the British monarchy: Robert Edge Pine, Prince Demah, and Patience Wright. From London to Boston, from Jamaica to Paris, from Bath to Philadelphia, these largely forgotten patriots boldly risked their reputations and their lives to declare independence. Mostly excluded from formal political or military power, these artists and their circles fired salvos against the king on the walls of the Royal Academy as well as on the battlefields of North America. They used their talents to inspire rebellion, define American patriotism, and fashion a new political culture, often alongside more familiar revolutionary figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Phillis Wheatley. Pine, an award-winning British artist rumored to be of African descent, infused massive history paintings with politics and eventually emigrated to the young United States. Demah, the first identifiable enslaved portrait painter in America, was Pine's pupil in London before self-emancipating and enlisting to fight for the Patriot cause. And Wright, a Long Island–born wax sculptor who became a sensation in London, loudly advocated for revolution while acting as an informal patriot spy. Illuminating a transatlantic and cosmopolitan world of revolutionary fervor, The Painter's Fire reveals an extraordinary cohort whose experiences testify to both the promise and the limits of liberty in the founding era. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Mike Pekovich and Phil Huber join Ben to debrief their week-long woodworking tour of England—part museum crawl, part shop class, all inspiration. From London's Building Crafts College (trade-focused millwork and stonemasonry) to the Snowdon School of Furniture (studio furniture, domestic woods, and a “rip-only” tablesaw philosophy), they compare shop practices and rethink joinery workflows (tenoners, Domino, band-sawn cheeks, using the miter saw's depth stop). The trip winds through the Westonbirt Arboretum and an unforgettable boxwood deep-dive with a Baroque oboe maker, then into the V&A's technique-curated furniture gallery. In the Cotswolds, Rodmarton Manor (Barnsley/Gimson) and the Gordon Russell Museum spark lessons in design “grammar,” chamfers, and English drawer slips you'll want to steal. There's even a pub-hall turning demo with Paul Hannaby—pints included. Plus: a quick preview of next week's Woodworking in America in Des Moines and what Ben, Phil, and friends will be teaching and doing on site. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Andrew Wakefield, physician-turned-filmmaker and one of the most controversial voices in modern medicine. From his early days as a gastroenterologist in the UK to becoming an outspoken critic of vaccine policy, Andy shares the story of how listening to parents and pursuing uncomfortable questions about children's health ultimately cost him his profession, country, and medical license. Andy and I discuss the rise in autism diagnoses, the explosion of the vaccine schedule, and the erosion of public trust in health authorities—alongside the role of media, censorship, and film in shaping public awareness.Whether you agree with him or not, Andy's perspective challenges us to confront uncomfortable questions about integrity, power, and responsibility in medicine. It's a conversation about courage, conviction, and what it takes to speak out when the stakes are at their highest.
