We talked about our projects and fav LYSs. I showed her how simple magic loop knitting is. Laura brought socks to her client David when she got back to NY. He sent me a photo asking if they were Cashmere because they were so soft and noting how great they looked with the pants he had on. Then I got a pic of his foot under his desk at work the next day. (Ravelry Project Page) On July 7, a man chatted with me on the Red Line about memories of his mother, sisters and daughters crocheting. Emelyn has been wanting to crochet again but is feeling rusty. On July 4th I reminded them how to single & half-double crochet. Last weekend, they started a star project so we worked with DC and how to work corners and getting used to reading a pattern. If you haven't listened yet, you can catch up here: https://the-perfect-sip.captivate.fm/listenSpeaking of cocktails, today Ben is drinking a Spencer while Matthew is drinking something with Watermelon in it as always. Recipes below.Spencer2 oz dry gin1 oz apricot brandy (or ⅔ oz brandy and ⅓ oz orange juice)1 dashes bitters1 dash of orange juiceAdd all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake until chilled. Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange slice or apricotNotes: Ben got this recipe from a deck of playing cards (nothing but the best for Giant Cocktails!) The original recipe from the deck of playing cards called for a dash of bitters and orange juice, but research suggests using two dashes of bitters and 2/3 oz brandy and 1/3 oz orange juice works better.Watermelon Old Fashioned2 oz Gin1/2 oz Watermelon Syrup2 dashes Orange Bitters1 dash Cherry Bitters (optional)Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir for 30 seconds and strain into a rocks glass with a large ice cube. Garnish with a watermelon chunk.#doitforginny

Taiwanese pilots flew combat jets in Saudi uniforms over Arabian skies? Yes. This week, learn about what may seem like an unusual friendship: the close ties between Taiwan and Saudi Arabia. Bonded by oil, anti-Communism, technical exchanges, interest-free loans, and even seedless watermelons, Saudi Arabia was the only nation in the Middle East to vote “NO” on letting Red China into the UN, and they only swapped from Taipei to Beijing in 1990. This week's episode is an oasis for those thirsting to learn more about the ROC and 沙特阿拉伯 (Shātè Ā lā bó).PLEASE follow/like/sub/etc, on IG, FB, YT or LinkedIn, leave a review on Apple Podcasts or on our website, and most importantly, tell your friends about this FREE Taiwan history podcast!

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columnIt is high summer in the Northern Hemisphere. What wine fits into the zeitgeist of pools splashing with bikini-clad frolickers slathered in sun screens, outdoor cooking, indoor binge watching movies on a wide screen while the AC heroically soldiers on?A surprising star shines bright: sparkling wine.First, sparkling is the wine best served around 40 degrees, lighter versions as low as 37. That is the coldest temperature recommended for wine. If you like a cold one on a hot day, sparkling is the answer.Second, sparkling is the most versatile food wine. Examples:• Hot dogs. If you want a drink for your dogs, look no further than well-chilled sparkling. The high acidity of sparklers is a perfect palate cleanser for the fatty richness of a hot dog. The bubbles also provide a scrubbing mechanism, re-setting your palate for your next dog bite. Champagne, Spanish cava, New World sparklings, Italian prosecco—they all have a dog in the hunt for pairing with your wiener wonder.Jefferson• Watermelon. Sparkling not only is secularly popular, there are solid scientific reasons it works. Watermelon and sparklings have complementary flavors. Watermelons deliver honey-like sweetness, bright fruit, citrus undertones. These are the same descriptors often found in sparkling reviews, especially sparkling rosés. Sparkling's high acidity is counterpoint to watermelon's natural sweetness, enhancing the fresh, crisp qualities found in both. Sparkling's bubbles amplify the cooling sensation of the fruit, especially efficacious in high summer. Prosecco particularly shines here.• Buttery popcorn. You have had your saturation of pool floating and UV attacks on your epidermis and have retreated to the cool embrace of your air conditioned room with the wide screen to watch the latest, mindless summer movie. Sparkling wine definitely can help here. Buttery chardonnay is the apex pairing with buttery popcorn, but sparkling is a photo-finish second. Sparkling's effervescence and crisp acidity are a felicitous contrast to buttery popcorn's buttery richness. Prosecco and Spanish cava will provide wallet-friendly alternatives to Champagne or other pricier picks. In all cases, colder the better. You can serve sparkling right out of your refrigerator. If you need a quick chill, put the bottle in a bucket with half ice and half water, plus some salt for the fastest chill—this method is much more efficient than putting bottles in the freezer.Enjoy the joys of high summer. The attraction of life is change. Soon enough you will miss the pool water being so warm, the days being so long and hot, and the friends and family gathered around the outdoor grill listening to the doggies sizzle. It is high summer in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the depth of winter in the Southern. Enjoy the moment.Tasting notes• Gruet Brut Rosé NV: Delicious, accessible, correct pinot noir brute sparkling made with 100% pinot noir. Red fruits on the nose and palate are framed by excellent acidity, a lengthy column of tiny bubbles, and invigorating mouthfeel. $17 Link to my review• VARA Winery VARAxLG Brut Blanc de Blancs American Sparkling Wine NV: Superb sparkling wine made in Albuquerque, NM in collaboration with Laurent Gruet of Gruet Wine fame. Further proof American sparkling made in New Mexico is an incredible value and easily matches sparklings made elsewhere. $40 Link to my reviewLast roundWhy did the lions move at the end of summer?Because the pride goeth before the fall.Wine time.Gus Clemens on Wine is a reader-supported publication. Held every second Saturday in August, this beloved annual event celebrates the local watermelon crop with lively music, mouthwatering food, and endless family-friendly fun. Join us as we take you through the festival's highlights, from Thursday and Friday's thrilling rodeo to Saturday's all-day festivities, including seed-spitting contests, arts and crafts fairs, and carnival rides. Discover why over 20,000 visitors flock to Rush Springs each year to savor more than 50,000 pounds of juicy black diamond, royal sweet, and other watermelon varieties. Tune in for a taste of Oklahoma's sweetest tradition! Rush Springs is a town of less than 1,000 residents, however, each summer, it becomes THE place to be as 20,000 people assemble for the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival. The beloved annual tradition has been held in this welcoming town every second Saturday in August since 1948. To learn about the rich history of Rush Springs, stop by the Hampton House Museum on the main strip. When heading into town, keep your eyes peeled to spot the Dinosaur Roadside Ranch on US Highway 81. This attraction features junkyard metal artwork including two giant dinosaurs, an airplane with a tin can man pilot, an assortment of smiley face-themed pieces and more. One of the dinosaur pieces was built out of an old horse trailer and originally used as an animated parade float. It's a great pitstop to snap a photo! In this episode of The Analog Explorer, I stepped outside the bustling Vancouver Timepiece Show to chat with George, lead videographer at Studio Underd0g—a small team with big personality and watches that crank the whimsy dial to 1000!If you've ever asked, “Why so serious?” while doomscrolling past silver-and-black dive watch reels or posts, Studio Underd0g is your antidote. Founded by Richard Benc in 2021, the brand launched with a Kickstarter and a mission: make great watches that don't take themselves too seriously. And they've stuck to it—with colorways like Watermelon, Mint Choc Chip, and the latest duo, Avocado and Guac. They've managed to blend horological craftsmanship with joyful whimsy....https://www.analogexplorer.com/p/ae-40-studio-underd0g-vancouver-timepiece

Watermelon vines had overtaken my garden. They snaked across the stone path, climbed the fence, and worst of all tried to choke my favorite vegetable plants. I knew the garden wouldn’t thrive unless I took action. So, one evening I went to work uncurling tendrils from stems and leaves. When the coils grew back, I kept removing them until the plants finally matured and produced plump tomatoes and shiny peppers. Sins like greed, lust, and hate can overtake our lives like the vines that tried to dominate my garden. Left untended, the seed of a wrong thought may develop until it controls our desires and actions. The Bible says it’s possible to be so consumed by a particular sin that we’re held back from growing spiritually. This is the “sin that so easily entangles us” (Hebrews 12:1). The writer of Hebrews encourages us to “throw off everything that hinders” so that we can “run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (vv. 1-2). To break free requires that we acknowledge we need help to handle the sin. This can be difficult if we’ve convinced ourselves and others that it’s not a serious issue. Once we sincerely admit the problem, Jesus welcomes our prayers of confession and forgives us immediately (1 John 1:9). He can show us how to change our life patterns and through the power of the Holy Spirit help us to overcome the bondage that prevents us from flourishing
Even in life's most difficult seasons—when the soil is dry and the future feels uncertain—God can still bring fruit. In this powerful message, Pastor Josiah Kish explores Jeremiah 17:5–8 and shows us how deep trust in God's unchanging character helps us thrive, even in spiritual drought. Whether you're in a season of plenty or a season of pain, this sermon will remind you that God is still working—growing something good, even in the wasteland.

Ben and Chris come back around to Japanese cinema with a review of Nobuhiko Obayashi's 1989 film, Beijing Watermelon. While made considering Japan's and China's complicated history and produced coincidentally with the events of Tiananmen Square in 1989, Obayashi bends the rules of cinema once again to make a beautiful and non-political film about community, personal responsibility, and balance. With apparent influence from the likes of both Capra and Ozu, The Searchers discuss the vital nature of the in-between moments and the meaning of "home," a word that may describe Obayashi's oeuvre to a T. Vinegar Syndrome's partner label Kani released Beijing Watermelon in 2024, and it can be found on Blu-ray HERE. Nick writes “I had a roadside sighting in CA with my mom summer of 2008 when I was 18. It was about 12:30-1am in the foothills of Placerville CA. We had a newspaper route that often had us heading home past midnight. It was mid August a few months after graduating from high school. It was a beautiful night we had the windows down just cruising. My mom had a Geo Metro that we used for the paper route with a 3 cylinder engine so it was not fast lol. It was a blind corner and our headlights hit this thing, and my mom didn't see it at first (she never sees anything, we once almost hit a buck so close I could see the velvet on his antlers but she didn't see it at all) but then she downshifted and hit the gas. I knew what I saw but I turned to her and asked what she saw, she had the same description as me so knew I wasn't crazy because what I saw was nothing short of impossible. I saw it running before the headlights actually hit it and it was like a cartoon how it was running, hands down by his side ( I say his because for some reason I knew it was a male) and his head didn't bobble at all. As soon as the headlight hit this thing it just stopped on a dime, the dust it kicked up floating past like a mist as it stood there. Bright like blood orange eye shine (not glowing) with a hint of green. It was holding a watermelon in one arm with other hanging down by its side it's hand shaped like a Lego man hand. It wasn't crazy huge, maybe six to six and a half feet tall. All black but thinning around the pecks. I could see the veins in his biceps. It looked like an Aboriginal person from Australia. That's the closest thing I can compare it too. Very human like. Definitely not an animal.”
