G. Dean Patterson Jr. '71, retired Case Western Reserve University administrator, delivered the Cum Laude Convocation address March 24, 2023, in the Irvine Memorial Chapel as Mercersburg inducted 25 members of the Class of 2023 into the school's chapter of the society.

This convocation speech is to address the graduating class of high school seniors who have been dealt a tough hand recently. The talk, titled “Who Owns You?,” recounted her experience as a new mother and young professor wrestling with the question of ownership of the placenta at her daughter’s birth. Given the human placenta’s rich source of biological material, including a protein that enables cell growth, the question of ownership is a complex one that leads to bigger questions about who owns the individual, her body, her work and ideas.

Huggins Professor and Chair of the Ben May Department for Cancer Research, delivered the 512th Convocation address at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on the University of Chicago campus. The talk, titled “Who Owns You?,” recounted her experience as a new mother and young professor wrestling with the question of ownership of the placenta at her daughter’s birth. Given the human placenta’s rich source of biological material, including a protein that enables cell growth, the question of ownership is a complex one that leads to bigger questions about who owns the individual, her body, her work and ideas.

Rosenbaum went on to introduce Professor Sidney R. Nagel, who delivered the Convocation Address, entitled “The Power of Observation.” President Zimmer conferred degrees upon candidates in the College, graduate divisions, and professional schools. The program also included performances by the University of Chicago Motet Choir and the Millar Brass Ensemble.

Provost Rosenbaum goes on to introduce Professor Stephen Raudenbush, who delivers the Convocation Address entitled "The Life of the Mind and Social Action." Recipients of the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring, the William Benton Medal for Distinguished Public Service, and the Rosenberger Medal receive recognition from President Zimmer and their faculty colleagues. In the second half of the ceremony, President Zimmer bestows honorary degrees upon distinguished scholars and confers degrees upon candidates in the College, graduate divisions, and professional schools.
