On May 4, 1970, during a rally on the campus of Kent State University opposing expanding the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces, as well as protesting the draft and the Ohio National Guard's presence on campus, all it took was 13 seconds for 28 National Guard soldiers to fire 67 rounds, killing four and wounding nine unarmed college students. One of the nine injured suffered permanent paralysis, and students Allison Krause, 19, Jeffrey Miller, 20, Sandra Scheuer, 20, and William Schroeder, 19, were killed. Students had been protesting on campus since May 1, and after the Kent State shootings, immediate and massive outrage sparked at college campuses across the country. More than four million students participated in organized walkouts at hundreds of colleges, universities, and even high schools, and the shootings made the United States' role in the Vietnam War even more contentious. It was a loss of innocence, and a Pulitzer Prize winning photo of a young woman wailing over the body of Jeffrey Miller summed up the feelings of a generation. In the photo, she seems to silently scream “Why? Why? Why?” After the incident, eight of the shooters were charged and ultimately acquitted in a bench trial. The Kent State massacre was a cultural moment that shook the nation, and, as Brian VanDeMark writes in his brilliant new book Kent State: An American Tragedy, out tomorrow, “If you want to know when the Sixties died, they died on May 4, 1970, right there and then, at 12:24 in the afternoon.” Today on the show, Brian and I discuss so much, including what Kent State represented on the whole for America, its legacy, and what we learned from it. Brian teaches history at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis and is the author of several books on American history, including co-authoring Robert McNamara's bestselling Vietnam memoir, In Retrospect, which became the basis of the Academy Award-winning documentary The Fog of War. Take a listen to this fascinating conversation with him about a moment that changed history forever. Kent State: An American Tragedy by Brian VanDeMark

Susie Banikarim has been a freshman journalist. She's also been a boss. Now, she's the co-host and EP of the podcast In Retrospect, along with her friend, New York Times editor Jessica Bennett. Over the years, Susie has kept watching the 2006 modern classic The Devil Wears Prada, and she's noticed a funny thing happen. Where once she (obviously!) identified with the put-upon lead, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), time and life have shown her that maybe Miranda Preistly (Meryl Streep) wasn't such a devil after all.Plus...it's #MaxFunDrive! Jessica Bennett has spent a prolific, award-winning career writing and reporting about gender, sexuality, politics, and culture, including as the first-ever Gender Editor for The New York Times, and now as a contributing writer & editor. She has profiled - and shaped our collective understanding of - numerous public figures including Jennifer Aniston, Pamela Anderson, Monica Lewinsky, E. Jean Carroll, Governor Kathy Hochul and Anita Hill. Jessica's book, "Feminist Fight Club," offered solutions for fighting workplace inequality and gender bias, and her current podcast, "In Retrospect," with co-host Susie Banikarim, looks back on cultural moments from the past few decades and rethinks our collective - and often extremely dated - response. It's all giving her a lot to think about right now as she ponders what's next in a decimated media environment as it seems like, yet again, everything is changing. In this episode of "Your New Life Blend," host Shoshanna Hecht sits down with Jessica to discuss our shifting attitudes as a society (and as an ambitious, high- achieving women), how to carve out your own job description, and above all, how to roll with an ever-changing world when sometimes what you really want is a nap.Website:https://www.jessicabennett.comBooks:Feminist Fight Club: A Survival Manual for a Sexist Workplace This Is 18: Girls' Lives Through Girls' Eyeshttps://www.jessicabennett.com/booksNew York Times stories:https://www.nytimes.com/by/jessica-bennettPodcast:In Retrospect with Susie Banikarim and Jessica Bennetthttps://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-in-retrospect-with-susie-122206786/Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/jessicabennetthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jess7bennetthttps://twitter.com/jessicabennett

“Lisa the Drama Queen” (January 25, 2009) So here's an interesting one. In its twentieth season, The Simpson did an episode inspired by Heavenly Creatures, the 1994 Peter Jackson movie that has Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey playing schoolgirls who flee into a fantasy world and also each other. More than a decade later, this story would play out again, only with Lisa Simpson and a new character voiced by Emily Blunt, and that might seem like a strange combo, especially because the Simpson version nixes the sex and violence of the original, but it nonetheless works. Special thanks to the writer of this episode, Brian Kelley, for sharing his memories of how this episode came to be. For a limited time, you can still screen Heavenly Creatures via the GEE Patreon, but that window is closing. Info here. Pod Crashing Episode 288 With Susie And Jessica From In Retrospect Is there a cultural moment from your past that looks different in retrospect? Maybe it's a scandalous tabloid story seared into your teenage brain or a political punchline that just feels wrong now. It might be a very specific red swimsuit that inspired a decade of plastic surgery (see: Baywatch) or the inescapable smell of an entire generation of prepubescent boys (Axe body spray, anyone?). Each week on IN RETROSPECT, Emmy-winning journalist Susie Banikarim and New York Times editor Jessica Bennett revisit a pop culture moment from the 80s and 90s that shaped them - to try to understand what it taught us about the world, and a woman's place in it. If you're looking for a little comfort this holiday season, look no further than a classic Hallmark Christmas movie. There you'll find an uncomplicated world of quaint small towns covered in snow, magical family moments with hot cocoa and single girls looking for love in all the right places. Why are these films so popular despite their somewhat retrograde ideas about what everybody wants? In this special holiday episode, Susie will explain to Jess why she watches these sweet, simple movies despite - or maybe because of - how silly they often seem. In Retrospect is taking a little break for the holidays. Thank you for listening to our first season and look for new episodes starting Feb. 2, 2024! Each week on IN RETROSPECT, Emmy-winning journalist Susie Banikarim and New York Times editor Jessica Bennett revisit a pop culture moment from the 80s and 90s that shaped them — to try to understand what it taught us about the world, and a woman's place in it. This episode of In Retrospect will be an early episode on the US midterm elections at the end of this year. We especially want to focus on the developments in the Republican Party and the rise of Trumpism in the party. Ever since Donald Trump won the Republican primary elections in the runup to the 2016 presidential elections, he has slowly taken grip on every aspect of the Republican Party. It is getting harder and harder to voice opposing opinions in the party, forcing most Republicans to continue defending the ‘Big Lie' that the 2020 presidential election was lost unfairly due to fraud at the voting process. During this episode we will discuss the impacts of Trumpism on the Republican Party, and on American democracy and its institutions as a whole. We relate this to the Midterm elections, and discuss the chances of Republican success during these elections. We have interviewed Dr. G.H.J. Baarssen to discuss these topics with us. Dr. Baarssen is a lecturer at Leiden Univerisity, and teaches among other courses Politics of North America & History of North America. As an expert on American politics, he has also won the Obama Dissertation Prize in 2017. Please let us know your thoughts on the issues discussed in this episode! Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrase IN RETROSPECT and HINDSIGHT IS 20/20In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, in retrospect. When we use the phrase, in retrospect, it means we're talking about the past or thinking about the past. For me, it's usually a phrase I use when I'm thinking about a decision I made in the past that was bad. Here's an example sentence. I'm out here today wearing my spring jacket, but it's a little cold, in retrospect, I should've grabbed my gloves before I came outside. So I'm talking about a decision I made in the past that was probably a bad decision. So in retrospect, I should've grabbed my gloves. I'm actually home today, because a lot of teachers at my school have COVID right now. So in retrospect, it was probably a bad idea to have a staff meeting last Friday. I think that's maybe where it spread around, but who knows? So, in retrospect means to think about the past or to look back to the past when you're talking about something.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is hindsight is 20/20. This is kind of a funny phrase we say when we're talking about how when something goes wrong, if we had thought about it earlier, we probably could have prevented it. But hindsight is 20/20. When you look back, it's easier to see that you made a bad decision, than it might have been in the moment when you made it. When you can see without glasses, we say you have 20/20 vision, and hindsight is the act of looking back in the past. So we often say, hindsight is 20/20. It's very clear when you look backwards in time, where you made bad decisions in your life, but at the time, it might not have been.So to review, in retrospect is a phrase we use when we're talking about the past. I actually just used it when I replied to Mohd Ag's comment the other day on the last video, and that's when I thought of this phrase. And hindsight is 20/20 is kind of a funny phrase we use to laugh about how, when you're talking about the past, and bad decisions you've made, when you look at it from where you are in time right now, you know that it was a bad decision, but at the time, you really didn't.But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Denis. When I hear the phrase, let's look at a comment from a previous video, my heart starts beating faster. Qiu Park says, maybe your turn? And my response was, are you hoping that it's yours? So yeah, I wonder sometimes what it's like to watch these videos. I don't really know, because I'm the one making them, but I'm sure for some of you, you're wondering, did Bob pick my comment? So this time, Denis, I picked your comment, so hopefully you enjoyed thatSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadian)

University and campus culture has always been a center of freedom of expression and social experiments and which consequently often influenced the rest of society with progressive change as a result. However, some may argue the current wave of wokeness across certain campuses has actually halted this position as “liberal safe haven” because equality or equity is seen as more important. Furthermore, is academic freedom or even freedom of speech in general in danger? In this episode of In Retrospect we interview Dr. Jeffrey Fynn-Paul, who is an economist, historian and last but not least lecturer at our program of International Studies. Dr Fynn-Paul will analyze these movements on campus/in society and the (mis-)interpretation of history that led to the current situation. We will also discuss his involvement in History Reclaimed, an initiative by various other scholars and him promoting a balanced view of history, which should not be misused for propaganda purposes. After the interview, In Retrospect hosts Julian, Lucrezia, Franka and Tobias will discuss the dilemma of this episode as well in an interesting dialogue. We are also very interested to hear your take on this dilemma of today: do you think that political correctness hurts freedom of speech in today's society? Many books have been written on the tragic decisions regarding Vietnam made by the young stars of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Yet despite millions of words of analysis and reflection, no historian has been able to explain why such decent, brilliant, and previously successful men stumbled so badly. That changes with Road to Disaster. Historian Brian VanDeMark draws upon decades of archival research, his own interviews with many of those involved, and a wealth of previously unheard recordings by Robert McNamara and Clark Clifford, who served as Defense Secretaries for Kennedy and Johnson. Yet beyond that, Road to Disaster is also the first history of the war to look at the cataclysmic decisions of those in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations through the prism of recent research in cognitive science, psychology, and organizational theory to explain why the “Best and the Brightest” became trapped in situations that suffocated creative thinking and willingness to dissent, why they found change so hard, and why they were so blind to their own errors. An epic history of America's march to quagmire, Road to Disaster is a landmark in scholarship and a book of immense importance. The Road to the Vietnam War has been scrutinized by historians for decades offering a variety of explanations on how the U.S. became involved a war that most concluded was unwinnable by 1966, only a year after combat troops had been deployed. We explore the cataclysmic decisions of those in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations to explain why the "Best and the Brightest" became trapped in situations that suffocated their thinking and willingness to dissent, why they found change so hard, and why they were so blind to their own errors. To explain we interview Dr. Brian VanDeMark who is a professor of history at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis where he has been a member of its History Department since 1990. He is the author of several books on American history, he co-authored Robert McNamara's #1 best-selling Vietnam memoir, In Retrospect, which became the basis of Errol Morris's Academy Award-winning documentary film, "The Fog of War." He also wrote Pandora's Keepers: Nine Men and the Atomic Bomb and Into the Quagmire: Lyndon Johnson and the Escalation of the Vietnam War. His most recent book is Road to Disaster: A New History of America's Descent into Vietnam which was a Financial Times Best Book of the year in 2018

Welcome to In a Word, a newsletter that cultivates thoughtfulness, one word at a time. If a friend forwarded you this email, click the button to subscribe:Hey there!I recently shared some thoughts on perfectionism on Instagram. I’d had a rough week or so, in my own head. I hesitated to share about it, because it feels so navel-gazey and self indulgent to wax on about how I cannot cope in the midst of my very good and #blessed existence. But this has been one of my most masochistic tendencies around perfectionism—to heap it onto the pile of things I berate myself for: why can’t you stop being so hard on yourself? Feeling bad for feeling bad has never made me feel better. And crippling anxiety and upheaval that starts in my own mind is still crippling. So I shared that post when I genuinely thought I was coming out of it. But I kept feeling retroactive dread, which is how I define feeling regret, but combined with fear about what the regrettable thing means. (A thoughtless comment becomes a referendum on my character, a hyperbolized fear that no one will ever confide in me again.)While this anxiety maelstrom was happening in my gut (and often spilling over to unsuspecting innocents in my life), I was trying to work on a project related to this newsletter. But you know what doesn’t pair well with creative work? An outsized fear of mistakes, and what those mistakes will mean. Perhaps it will not surprise you that I wanted to crawl in bed every time I tried to work on it. And that the phrase, “I tender my resignation from the internet” crossed my mind every couple hours. It’s embarrassing to admit, but that’s how I felt.I wasn’t going to release an issue today, because I’d spent all my writing time buried under myself. But then the word retrospect came to mind. It’s commonly accepted that “hindsight is 20/20,” but it’s not, not always. In the midst of a perfectionism flare up, hindsight lies to me. It paints the past in a self-focused light that paralyzes me from moving forward. I’m so grateful to be in the flow of creativity again, however flawed the product. Thanks for joining me in diving backwards this week. PS. Listen to In A Word’s companion podcast here, or by using the play button or “listen in podcast app” link above. In this issue, you’ll find a toast to the past, followed by a retrospective collection, and a closing benediction.A Toast—To all the plans that went awry, to all the roads not taken. To the romances that blew up, and the business ideas that didn’t. To the false starts and failures that lit my cheeks on fire. To bright ideas that flickered out, to tear-stained rejection letters and unrequited crushes. To the unfinished drafts and unkept promises. To unseen dangers bypassed, and treasures I only recognized as fool’s gold once they’d passed me by. To goals that turned my knuckles white before I knew to let them go.Here’s to all I ever wanted, and didn’t get. I wouldn’t trade now for all the ever-afters I imagined, and so I toast them for leading me here.Recursion probes the same themes as Stephen King’s 11/22/63 (about a man trying to retroactively prevent the assassination of JFK) but more compellingly and in half the pages. The recently released 1619 Project is a somber, evocative reckoning with the impact of slavery in America over the 400 years since the first ship carrying enslaved Africans landed on our shores. I’ve been listening to the audio series. When our eyes strain to see what’s ahead, our feet are learning to move through the vapor of uncertainty. My guest is Brian VanDemark. His newest book Road to Disaster (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074SGPRZ4/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1)draws upon decades of archival research, his own interviews with many of those involved, and a wealth of previously unheard recordings by Robert McNamara and Clark Clifford, who served as Defense Secretaries for Kennedy and Johnson. Yet beyond that, Road to Disaster (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074SGPRZ4/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1)is also the first history of the war to look at the cataclysmic decisions of those in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations through the prism of recent research in cognitive science, psychology, and organizational theory to explain why the "Best and the Brightest" became trapped in situations that suffocated creative thinking and willingness to dissent, why they found change so hard, and why they were so blind to their own errors. An epic history of America’s march to quagmire, Road to Disaster (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074SGPRZ4/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1) is a landmark in scholarship and a book of immense importance. Brian VanDeMark teaches history at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, where for more than twenty-five years he has educated midshipmen about the Vietnam War. He has also been a visiting fellow at Oxford University. VanDeMark was the research assistant on Clark Clifford's bestselling autobiography Counsel to the President _and the coauthor of Robert McNamara's #1 bestseller In Retrospect. He is also the author of _Into the Quagmire, which came out of his doctoral dissertation on LBJ and the war. He lives in Maryland. Special Guest: Brian VanDeMark.

Methylation http://learntruehealth.com/methylation/ Methylation And Its Importance Methylation is something that not many people are knowledgeable about. It is a scientific process wherein it affects our mental health, immunity, and inflammation. To educate us more about this, Nutritional Sciences expert Chris Masterjohn will thoroughly expound on why we should take methylation seriously. Early Years Chris Masterjohn’s interest in pursuing a career in Nutrition goes way back during his teenage years. Witnessing how his mother suffered from fibromyalgia, she often experienced chronic pain. Diving into multi-level marketing for herbal products and water filters during his late teenage years, it was also around this time that Chris Masterjohn got interested in the Zone diet. From then on, his diet primarily consisted of 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, 30% fat, low omega 6 and high omega 3. “I was into radical politics, and I wanted to liberate everyone including the animals. That got me into veganism. When I was vegan, I got interested in the Zone diet and ate a lot of soy to get my protein up to 30% of my calories,” recalls Chris Masterjohn. However, Chris Masterjohn encountered several problems while he was on a diet. He had a weak digestion and was often in pain due to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, overproduction of gas, vulnerable to tooth decay and prone to anxiety. Weston A. Price When Chris Masterjohn went on to college, he was working part-time at the campus dining hall. One day, his boss, Wayne, gave him a pamphlet about raw milk. That brochure also mentioned the work of Weston A. Price. In the 1930s, Weston A. Price cited several causes of tooth decay. Decided on collecting more data to support the link between nutrition and tooth decay, Weston A. Price left his laboratory job. Travelling far and wide in search of populations that had less tooth decay, Weston A. Price soon discovered the adverse effects of flour. He was one of the first experts to study traditional diets and lifestyles of people from all walks of life. That led him to write a book about nutrition and physical degeneration, leading him to be known as the pioneer of nutritional anthropology. “Weston A. Price said that people with less tooth decay didn’t eat refined foods but rather focused on consuming nutrient-dense foods,” shares Chris Masterjohn. “Because of the book, I learned how to help myself. When I got better, I wanted to pay it forward. That is why I went on to medical school and studied chemistry.” What are Methylation and Demethylation One of Chris Masterjohn’s field of expertise is studying about methylation. In a nutshell, methylation involves one carbon and three hydrogen atoms combining to form another molecule. Demethylation, on the other hand, means the removal of the carbon and atoms. How the molecules work in our body is called methylation and demethylation. When a methylation cycle is not working well, we could get sick. Consequently, if our methylation is imbalanced, it causes a lot of autoimmune conditions. “Methylation plays the same role in mental health in anyone. Every piece of Biology is all based on carbon. Our body is primarily composed of carbon and hydrogen with a few other things thrown in,” said Chris Masterjohn. “Methylation in the scientific literature is often referred to as one-carbon metabolism.” How Methylation Works Chris Masterjohn says methylation controls the levels of dopamine in our brain. Methylation influences how ‘sticky’ our brain is versus to how fluid it is. Essentially, our primary goal is to have a nice balance. Because if our brain is too fluid, we can’t focus on anything. However, if our brain is too rigid, we tend to focus on all the wrong things. “Methylation inside the brain has a very powerful influence on the ‘stickiness’ of your mind. If you’re afraid of something, that fearful thought enters your mind. If your mind is not too ‘sticky,’ it’s pretty easy for you to let it go through,” Chris Masterjohn explains. He adds, “In cognitive therapy, if your mind is too ‘sticky,’ thoughts are lodged in the brain. Consequently, it takes a lot of mental effort to reorganize how you think about an idea.” Mental Effort The brain is a very powerful and sensitive part of our well-being. Hence, it is important to make sure our mental health is in tiptop shape. Take for example a panic attack. Chris Masterjohn says that a panic attack ultimately means panicking about panicking. The increase in panic reinforces our belief that our world is about to fall apart. As a result, we panic more about the rise in panic. “You have to have a pathologically ‘sticky’ brain for even the thought of panic to just stay at the center of your brain and nucleate this crystallization of the increase in panic,” Chris Masterjohn said. Furthermore, he says, “You can break that reinforcement by reformulating how you think about the panic you feel. However, if you just nutritionally modulate how ‘sticky’ your brain is, the panic doesn’t get stuck in the brain. Hence, you don’t have to do as much cognitive work to free yourself.” Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase Deficiency or MTHFR is a gene mutation which apparently is the cause of motor and developmental deficiencies. Chris Masterjohn explains that methylations impact throughout the body, particularly the brain. The process also involves the enzyme from the MTHFR gene. Hence, if one has an MTHFR gene mutation, the body tends to have a hard time expelling toxins from the body. “When you have lower MTHFR activity, methylfolate is your off-switch for the glycine buffer system. That is why we tend to waste glycine and pee it out. When that happens, it means you need to put more emphasis on dietary glycine,” said Chris Masterjohn. Correlation of Methylation and Creatine So what do you do with methylation? Well, 45% of our methylation is used to synthesize creatine. For those who are unfamiliar, creatine is what athletes take to either improve sports performance or build more muscle. However, what most people don’t realize is that all of us need to have two to three grams of creatine which is usually found in meat products. But most of us do not eat one to two pounds of meat per day; we need to make the rest of the creatine that our body needs. And one way to make it is through methylation. “Creatine is not just in our muscles. It is essential for the secretion of stomach acids. If our creatine levels go down, we would have digestive problems because we’re not making enough stomach acids,” explains Chris Masterjohn. Chris Masterjohn cites another example — when a sound comes into our ear; these little hairlike projections transmit the sound. Through the nerves, it goes to the brain to make the hearing. And that’s an energy-intensive process. So consequently, one of the things that make creatine great at energy supply is that it moves fast. Plus, there’s substantial evidence that creatine plays a significant role in protecting against depression. Importance of Nutrition Now that we know how vital the methylation process is, it is imperative that we properly nourish ourselves to ensure that the significant methylation components — choline, creatine and glycine supply are sufficient. Chris Masterjohn suggests that bone broth or bone stock can be an entryway to getting more glycine in particular. Eating soft bones is also another way. On the other hand, getting enough methylfolate can help prevent the glycine wasting. This can be done by eating folate-rich foods like legumes, liver, and leafy greens like broccoli. Chris Masterjohn stressed the need to make sure you consume at least the daily recommended intake of folate from foods. Apparently, most people don’t even get the U.S. recommended dietary allowance for folate, pregnant or lactating women in particular. Consequently, this is why there is a policy in the United States to give prenatal vitamins that have synthetic folic acid in them. “When you eat a molecule of folate, it goes into your cell and stays there for 180 days. Everyday, it gets re-methylated from your amino acid supply 18,000 times,” Chris Masterjohn said. “Supplementing with creatine is a very underappreciated way to try to help conserve the methylfolate supply that you’re taking.” In Retrospect Looking back, Chris Masterjohn says what happened to him was wholly physiological and zero percent psychological. Once he fixed everything physiologically, it eventually translated into a psychological belief that he had in fact cured himself. “That gave me a level of confidence. I was biased towards never worrying about any of those anxieties because I believed that they were gone,” Chris Masterjohn surmises. Further Learning To know more about methylation and gene expression, I suggest checking out Chris Masterjohn’s Masterclass. It is a comprehensive program where you will learn everything you need to know about the science behind nutrition and its effects on our health. He also has a fantastic podcast called Mastering Nutrition, available on iTunes. Chris Masterjohn earned his Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences in 2012 from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2012 to 2014, and served as Assistant Professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College from 2014 to 2016. He now works independently in health and nutrition research, education, and consulting. Chris Masterjohn has authored or co-authored ten peer-reviewed publications. His podcast, Mastering Nutrition, his two video series, Chris Masterjohn Lite and Masterclass With Masterjohn, and his blog can all be found on his website at chrismasterjohnphd.com.
