Join us as we welcome Machel Bogues, the dynamic Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Manager at the Royal Town Planning Institute. Through his compelling narrative, Machel draws on his powerful family heritage of activism against apartheid and colonialism, shedding light on the profound significance of names and legacy. Machel offers a thought-provoking examination of these connections, urging businesses and brands to acknowledge their origins and take social responsibility. By reflecting on these historical contexts, we stress the importance of honest conversations about the past to better understand their impact on our present and future. We also discuss the dual nature of historical figures like Gandhi and Churchill, highlighting the need to recognize their complexities. Creative expressions such as art, music, and dance are revealed as powerful tools for engaging with history and fostering inclusive dialogues. Muggsy Bogues remains the shortest player ever to play in the NBA, at 5-foot-3. Bogues stayed in the league for 14 years, most notably as the point guard for the exciting Charlotte Hornets teams of the 1990s that also starred Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Dell Curry. At age 57, he still lives in the Charlotte area today. We sat down in Bogues' home, inside a memorabilia room full of keepsakes from his career. We discussed Bogues' experience being shot as a child; the neighborhood recreation center Bogues says changed his life; and the former star's insistence that he really could dunk. In addition, we discussed Bogues playing himself in the movie Space Jam; his watching dumbstruck as Latrell Sprewell choked coach P.J. Carlesimo; and Bogues gives us the inside scoop on what Steph Curry was like as a child. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. Catch up with ALLISON INTERVIEWS Host, Allison Kugel: Follow on Instagram - @theallisonkugel Allison Interviews Blog - allisoninterviews.com Allison's Memoir, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record In the latest installment of the Allison Interviews Podcast, journalist and host Allison Kugel talks with NBA legend Muggsy Bogues. With his unique ball handling skills and 44-inch vertical, while he never dunked in an NBA game, Muggsy could dunk a ball. After initially playing for the then Washington Bullets, the expansion draft that occurred when the NBA added teams for the 1988-89 season put Bogues where he belonged, with the Charlotte Hornets. He quickly became a fan favorite in Charlotte, North Carolina, especially with younger fans. He raised his points-per game average to ten in the 1992-93 season and helped lead the Hornets to their first ever appearance in the NBA playoffs. They made the playoffs again in 1995. In 1997 Muggsy Bogues led with an assist per turnover ratio of 4.34. He was traded to the Golden State Warriors early in the 1997-98 season, but not before becoming the Charlotte Hornets' all-time leader in both steals and assists, which he still holds today. Muggsy Bogues' storied career with the NBA lasted fourteen years, and to this day, he remains the shortest player to ever make it into the NBA. In 2014, Bogues was named as the Hornets Ambassador and Special Projects Advisor, a position he still serves today. Muggsy Bogues currently travels around the U.S. doing speaking engagements, and he and his daughter Brittney Bogues run the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation. The Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation works to empower underserved youth and families to improve their quality of life through food security, access to education, and workforce development. The Foundation envisions equitable, thriving communities where everyone has a shot at a better life. “With a PR team, you don't only look at media outlets. You look at other stakeholders that you're trying to reach in other ways that they get their other media or their news, and what are other creative ways that we can reach them that don't call for a paid advertisement,” explains Brittney Bogues, serial entrepreneur and founder of Bogues Group. Brittney decided to open her own consulting firm after noticing a gap in marketing and branding for athletes and falling in love with PR. Now, her firm provides PR, marketing, and branding services for clients from all backgrounds including athletes, CEOs, healthcare professionals, and many others. As a woman of color well versed in entrepreneurship, Brittney is no stranger to overcoming obstacles. Additionally, Brittney had a personal obstacle to face as the daughter of a famous basketball star. She wanted to make sure that her small business was truly her own success and not something that was associated with her father. Brittney has learned a lot about what works and what doesn't when it comes to an effective PR strategy; and she shares some of her tips, along with some common mistakes she has noticed other businesses making. Her biggest tip is simply to pay attention to your local news stations and stay up to date on what is current in order to ensure you are always pitching relevant stories. Entrepreneurs face many challenges, and regardless of industry, everyone has their own personal obstacles to overcome. With the right PR strategy, you can take your business to the next level. Quotes: “The fun thing about having a consulting firm is that we get to work with all types of clients.” (3:34-3:39 | Brittney) “A lot of businesses should really focus and listen first to their current and local news stations.” (9:10-9:18 | Brittney) “With a PR team, you don't only look at media outlets. Standing at just 5 feet 3 inches tall, Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues was the shortest player in NBA history. Despite his diminutive stature, Bogues enjoyed a successful 14-year career in the NBA, playing for four different teams. Bogues was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 1987, he quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his flashy style of play and his outgoing personality. For most of his career, Bogues served as a backup point guard but he still managed to put up solid numbers over the course of his 14-year NBA career. In this conversation we extracted the ins and outs of a winning mindset that Muggsy maintained throughout his entire career. Pay attention and you will learn exactly how to turn that aspect of yourself that you consider a weakness into a strength that will push you towards your dreams, no matter what others say.
Growing up, Muggsy Bogues was always told he should do something else, anything besides basketball. He never acknowledged his many doubters except to prove them spectacularly wrong. Twenty years after receiving his first basketball as a toddler, he stood proud—at five-foot-three—as the starting point guard for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA. From the East Baltimore playground courts where he earned his nickname by muggin' opponents for possession of the ball to Dunbar High School where he excelled alongside future NBA players, Bogues set the tone in his early years for the great heights he'd reach professionally. In Muggsy: My Life from a Kid in the Projects to the Godfather of Small Ball (Triumph, 2022), Bogues delves deep into his life and career, reflecting on legendary battles with Michael Jordan, John Stockton, and other generational stars of '80s and '90s hoops. He shares far-ranging anecdotes from playoff runs in Charlotte, filming Space Jam, and even watching a young Steph Curry grow up. Conversational and clear-sighted, this is a story of uncompromising vision and fleet-footed determination during a golden era for the NBA. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. Muggsy Bogues remains the shortest player ever to play in the NBA at 5-foot-3. Bogues stayed in the league for 14 years, most notably as the point guard for the exciting Charlotte Hornets teams of the 1990s that also starred Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Dell Curry. At age 57, he still lives in the Charlotte area today. In Part 2 of our conversation, we discussed Bogues playing himself in the movie Space Jam; his watching dumbstruck as Latrell Sprewell choked coach P.J. Carlesimo; and Bogues gives us the inside scoop on what Steph Curry was like as a child. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. Muggsy Bogues is fresh off releasing his new book "Muggsy: My Life from a Kid in the Projects to the Godfather of Small Ball", and today he joins Matt to talk about his NBA career and life after.
Tyrone (Muggsy) Bogues is one of the most recognizable “names” in NBA history. At five-foot-three, he is the shortest player to ever play at basketball's highest level and he succeeded with four teams across 14 seasons during the rugged 1980s and '90s. A testament to his focus, talent and toughness. In April 2022, he released Muggsy: My Life from a Kid in the Projects to the Godfather of Small Ball, written with Jacob Uitti (Triumph Books). Muggsy pays tribute to a loving family who supported him through his maturation into a true player from inner-city Baltimore to the time he established himself as a pro point guard, whose career peak came as the engine of the expansion Charlotte Hornets. His playing days lasted from 1987-88 until an abbreviated season with the Toronto Raptors in 2000-01. Currently, Bogues is an ambassador and community advisor with the Hornets franchise in Charlotte. In between watching the NBA Finals where close family friend Steph Curry goes for a fourth title with the Golden State Warriors utilizing a playing style that he helped push, Muggsy joined us to talk about his life and how it has inspired the lives of others.
It's a special "retcon" episode this week, as we dig into both the original and revisionist histories of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets - with the first incarnation's most recognizable player, and the second iteration's most logical keeper-of-the-flame: Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues. Over a 14-year pro NBA career, Bogues ("Muggsy: My Life From a kid in the Projects to the Godfather of Small Ball") was best known for his ten standout seasons of on-court wizardry with the 1988 expansion version of the Hornets - which lit up the league in attendance (highest in the NBA for seven seasons, including an unprecedented string of 364 consecutive sellouts in the 22,500-seat Charlotte Coliseum [aka "The Hive"]); dynamic up-tempo style (featuring a bevy of budding stars like Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Glen Rice, and Dell Curry, as well as future Naismith Basketball Hall of Famers Robert Parish and Vlade Divac); and unique, ahead-of-their-time Alexander Julian-designed purple and teal uniforms. Bogues regales us with some of his most memorable moments from the OG Hornets - as well as other career highlights like: a rookie-of-the-year summer season with the 1987 USBL Rhode Island Gulls; two seasons of head coaching the WNBA Charlotte Sting; and stealing some scenes in the iconic 1996 film "Space Jam". And, of course, we debate the vagaries of the original Hornets team history in relation to the "revived" Charlotte franchise narrative - despite the club's move to New Orleans (now today's Pelicans) in 2002, and the subsequent expansion Bobcats' retroactive bending of the time-space continuum.
We are excited to bring you this episode of the #squarepizzapod. To kick off year 3, Greg is in conversation with Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues. He is also known as the Godfather of Smallball. He played 14 seasons in the NBA, with 10 of those being with our beloved Charlotte Hornets. One fun fact about Muggsy is that he was a wrestler in high school and how that sport influenced his basketball career. In this episode:Muggsy's reflection on spending 14 seasons in the NBAStories and insights covered in his new memoirThe work of the Muggsy Bogues Family FoundationHis first love in sports (hint: not basketball)Why square pizza reminds him both of UNC basketball and cheese...Muggsy Bogues is vital to the NBA that he transcends the game itself, as seen by how the game is now played. We hope you guys enjoy this episode! Bio:Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland played for the legendary high school team, the Dunbar Poets who won 59 consecutive games and ranked as one of the top high school teams in the United States. Bogues went on to graduate from Wake Forest where the school later retired his jersey number. Muggsy was selected 12th in the first round of the NBA draft by the Washington Bullets. He retired from the NBA ranking 16th among all-time assist leaders. He gained plenty of attention with his unique ball-handling skills; he could maintain a legal dribble so close to the ground that his knuckles dragged on the floor and with his high jumper range of 44-inch leaps on the court. Throughout his career, he stayed busy starting in commercials and major productions like Space Jam, Eddie, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Muggsy retired from professional play ranking at number 16 among all-time assist leaders in the NBA and still remains the shortest player in history. Since leaving the NBA, Muggsy has worked with his nonprofit the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation based in Charlotte, NC where he resides with his family. Muggsy is also an Ambassador for the NBA traveling the world educating youth. www.boguesfoundation.org Support the show (http://Scherm.co)

#12 “Bogues”: Andrew Bogut doesn't need much introduction for all sports fans. He grew up in Melbourne, went on to play for the AIS before signing a letter of intent for the University of Utah and becoming the #1 pick in 2005's NBA Draft after his sophomore year. Andrew had a phenomenal career not only in the NBA where he became a NBA champ in 2015 with the Golden State Warriors but also with the Boomers when competing for the Australian National Team in the Olympics in 2004, 2008 & 2016 as well as plenty of other international competitions. A success story of its own kind that he shared with me on this episode. Andrew also has his own podcast called “Rogue Bogues” where you can hear not only his life's journey in the ‘My Journey' category but also various other topics. On this episode we talked about his upbringing in Australia by two immigrant parents, the struggles he faced as a young kid and how that prepared him for his career. We touched on his value system, the importance of mentorship throughout his career, the social media use today as well as various other topics. Listen to the end to hear his Rick Majerus stories as well as other impromptu chit-chat. Daniel Bogue – NZSIA examiner, Technical team member, President of the NZSIA The Joys of modern technology allowed me to catch up with Daniel from the other side of the globe as he embarks on the ski season in New Zealand. It had been far too long since we caught up - but always a pleasure! Daniel started skiing at the age of 11 on a school ski trip. He loved it so much he convinced his family that it was a sport they should all do. Since then its been all downhill. (Skiing Downhill) . Both Daniel and his brother carried on to become NZSIA examiners and eventually trained there parents to become instructors through the Rookie Academy at Treble Cone. Once Daniel completed his degree he set off skiing in Japan, Canada the United states and more recently China. Daniel will always call Wanaka home and rates Treble Cone as one of his favorite mountains to ski and train on. Daniel still works for the Rookie academy and is an active examiner. Having two small children means he doesn't get to ski in the Northern Hemisphere as much as he would like but he loves the fact that 3 generations of Bogues get to ski together in NZ all because of a School ski trip. Daniel traveled to Bulgaria as part of the NZSIA Interski team and has been elected to President of the Board of the NZSIA. www.rookieacademy.com www.nzsia.org www.Atomic.com ____ Many thanks to our Sponsor Wolf and Grizzly. https://www.wolfandgrizzly.com If you want to get out and enjoy all the best our natural world has to offer – check out the cooking options from Wolf and Grizzly. On today’s episode, Jason kicks things off by doing into a deep dive into the evolution of James Harden. In basketball, just as in life, there’s no such thing as success or failure; each moment is just a stepping-stone to something else. In Houston, we were quick to call Harden a failure because he was unable to get over the hump and get to the NBA Finals. But maybe, all of the lessons he learned about winning and losing are what led to him evolving into arguably the most indispensable player on the Brooklyn Nets. In fact, you could argue that no player outside of LeBron James effects winning more than Harden. Later, NBA legend Tyrone 'Muggsy' Bogues swings by to discuss how the game has evolved since he played back in the 90s, why he sees current Charlotte Hornets phenom LaMelo Ball as a cross between Jason Kidd and Penny Hardaway, why he's a big fan of the overall point guard play in today's NBA, the obstacles he had to overcome as a 5'3" point guard. both in college and in the NBA, how basketball helped him navigate the inner-cities of Baltimore as a youth, what it was like playing for the #1 high school team in the nation in the early-80s, how the additions of Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson helped turn his Charlotte Hornets squad into one of the most exciting teams of the decade - even if their run ended prematurely, what he's expecting from the Brooklyn Nets trio of Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and James Harden, the notion that players from 20 years ago couldn't play in today's NBA, and much more! In this episode, the Dog and Thimble crew are doing the time warp again as they try to return to the past in one of the newest games from USAopoly, Samurai Jack: Back to the Past. But that's not all, we've also got discussions about high school yearbooks, Nickelback covering Alanis Morisette, and a pitch for a new show about NBA players hiding on each other's shoulders in trenchcoats to get into R-rated films. It's weird, it's wild, it's just another day on the Dog and Thimble podcast.
In June 1987, there was a major shock at the NBA draft when the Washington Bullets picked the shortest man ever to play top-tier American basketball, Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues. Measuring just 5 foot 3 inches (160cm), Muggsy went on to have a successful career, earning the respect of his taller colleagues with his aggressive play and ability to snatch the ball. Shakespeare and his plays are woven deeply into the culture of the Caribbean, both white and black. Even after centuries of British colonial rule came to an end, Shakespeare endured, as we hear in this episode of Shakespeare Unlimited. There’s a long tradition in the British Caribbean of using Shakespeare quotations in competitions to demonstrate rhetorical skill, whether in the schoolyard or at rural village gatherings. After slavery was abolished in the British colonies, schools were established to steep the empire’s newest subjects in British literature, particularly Shakespeare, imparting British values along the way. But anti-colonialists have also claimed Shakespeare for their own, particularly THE TEMPEST and the character of Caliban. Our guests on this episode are Dr. Giselle Rampaul, a lecturer in Literatures in English at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad, and Dr. Barrymore A. Bogues, Director of the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University. They are interviewed by Neva Grant. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. © November 4, 2015. It was edited by Gail Kern Paster and Esther Ferington. We had help from Melissa Marquis at NPR in Washington, Courtney Coelho at Brown University, and Kerri Chandler at Wiluvbeats Studios in Barataria, Trinidad. We also want to say a special “thank you” to Fabienne Viala, a professor in the school of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Warwick in the UK. Early on in our research on this topic, Dr. Viala was uncommonly generous in offering her time and her deep understanding of this history. She also introduced us to Giselle Rampaul.
Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues was born January 9, 1965, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the youngest child of Richard and Elaine Bogues. Muggsy grew up along with his two brothers, Richard and Anthony and one sister Sherron in the Lafayette Public housing projects o the city's east side. There he earned his nickname "Muggsy" from neighborhood playmates. Among his childhood playmates were future NBA players Reggie Williams and David Wingate. He and his friends practiced slam dunks with an open-bottomed milk crate hung on a fence. Muggsy will discuss LIFE AFTER BASKETBALL. Anthony Bogues, the Harmon Family Professor of Africana Studies, delivered the Opening Convocation keynote address titled “‘Tell The Minister We Are Human Too!’ To be Human in Today’s World: Is it Possible?” to the undergraduate, graduate, and medical students beginning their studies at Brown. The ceremony took place at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, on the College Green. Full text is at http://today.brown.edu/articles/2010/09/bogues
On March 25, the United Nations observed its International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade with an exhibit, video screenings, and remarks by diplomats and scholars. Among the latter was Brown’s Anthony Bogues, Harmon Family Professor of Africana Studies and an expert in Caribbean and African politics and culture. While the UN’s 1960 Universal Declaration of Human Rights established a self-governance plan for colonial countries and peoples, Bogues told the UN General Assembly it is important to remember that 156 years earlier, Haitians declared political independence from France and, in the resulting constitution, abolished slavery in Haiti forever. The international community should reframe its conception of Haiti as an “outcast nation of the West,” Bogues said. Rather, “we should embrace its historical contribution to human freedom as one central element in the making of the modern world.” With that new framework, how Haiti is rebuilt after its devastating earthquake of 2010 is “a critical question,” said Bogues.
