Lauren Spierer, a 20-year-old sophomore studying textiles merchandising at Indiana University, disappeared in the early morning hours of June 3, 2011, in Bloomington, Indiana. The night before, she had been out drinking heavily with friends using a fake ID; after leaving Kilroy's Sports Bar barefoot and without her phone or shoes around 2:27 a.m., she walked with Corey Rossman back to the Smallwood Plaza area, got into a brief altercation outside, then spent time in Rossman's apartment (where his roommate Michael Beth tried to keep her safe) before moving to neighbor Jay Rosenbaum's townhome. She was last confirmed seen by Rosenbaum around 4:30 a.m., walking alone and intoxicated along College Avenue toward her own apartment. Lauren had a rare heart condition called long QT syndrome that made her especially vulnerable to fatal arrhythmias when combined with alcohol or drugs (trace cocaine was later found in her room, and Rosenbaum reported she had also used cocaine and crushed Klonopin that night). Despite massive searches, landfill excavations, cadaver-dog alerts, and thousands of tips, no trace of her has ever been found; her boyfriend Jesse Wolff and the three friends were named persons of interest but cooperated fully, passed private and FBI polygraphs, and were never named suspects. Civil negligence suits filed by her family against the friends were dismissed in federal court. As of May 2026 the case remains active and unsolved with the Bloomington and IU police departments.   Branch of Hope: Caroline's Rainbow Foundation is a UK-registered charity founded in 2002 by the family of Caroline Ann Stuttle, a young British traveler who tragically lost her life while on a gap year in Australia. In this episode, we speak with Professor Thane Rosenbaum about his book Beyond Proportionality: Israel's Just War in Gaza, a sharp critique of how international law, media narratives, and moral language are applied to Israel in times of war. Rosenbaum argues that the concept of “proportionality” is often misunderstood and selectively enforced, creating a double standard that places unique constraints on Israel while obscuring the realities of terrorism and asymmetric warfare. We discuss his experience publishing and promoting the book in today's climate, and how it intersects with rising anti-Zionist sentiment in the West. He explains why anti-Jewish propaganda and pro-Palestinian activism have been so effective, unpacks the legal and ethical challenges surrounding proportionality in armed conflict, and offers his perspective on how antisemitism should be confronted today. The conversation also explores what the future may hold for Jewish life in the United States. Truth is Dead: Steven Rosenbaum on AI as a Spectacularly Good Liar

“When we trust AI to tell us the truth, we are setting ourselves up to hand over something deeply human to a machine that does not have our best interests at heart.” — Steven RosenbaumTruth, Steven Rosenbaum cheerfully admits, is a shitty word. It has two ontological realities — one objective, the other subjective — but most of us use the word without much thought. Maybe it's like pornography. It might be hard to define, but you know it when you see it. Or perhaps you know it, when you don't see it.His new book, The Future of Truth: How AI Reshapes Reality, with a foreword by Nobel laureate Maria Ressa, takes a cast of tech futurists — Douglas Rushkoff, Larry Lessig, Gary Marcus, Esther Dyson, David Chalmers — and asks what happens to truth in our AI age.AI is, at its core, Rosenbaum's tech mavens report, a spectacularly good liar. It tells us exactly what we want to hear. And even when it knows it's wrong, he says, it lies. Rather than a bug, lying is a core, perhaps the core feature of AI.I'm not so sure. Humans have always been spectacularly good liars too. Stories are a kind of untruth. Cinema is, by definition, an untruth. Television had ads. Every medium has been corrupted by commercial interest. But, for Rosenbaum, AI is different. Truth then has no future in our AI age. Except, of course, in books like The Future of Truth. Five Takeaways•       AI Is, at Its Core, a Spectacularly Good Liar: It tells you exactly what you want to hear. Even when it knows it's wrong, it lies. That's not a code problem or a tweak — it's in its DNA. Gary Marcus argues the problem isn't AI per se but the current structure of LLMs. They read everything you've ever said and manufacture a version of you. Most of it is pretty good. The rest is just fucking wrong.•       Truth Is a Shitty Word: It means two completely different things. Objective truth: one plus one equals two. Subjective truth: your opinion dressed up as fact. We've allowed ourselves to use the word casually, and that's dangerous. The moment it came out from hiding was Kellyanne Conway on the White House lawn, talking about “alternative facts.” Trump then built a social network and called it Truth Social. That wasn't an accident.•       Courts Require Facts. AI Will Filter Justice: Larry Lessig's concern is that courts could really use AI to process enormous volumes of evidence. But AI will do it with its own biases built in. It might look at a thousand similar cases and say: we see a pattern, we don't need to hear anything else. Lessig fears the court system will be reshaped by a technology that doesn't understand what justice means.•       ChatGPT Said Sora Was Dangerous — Weeks Before They Shut It Down: Rosenbaum “interviewed” OpenAI's own algorithm about Sora for two hours. By the end, it said: Sora 2 is dangerous, Sam should have known better, it was a bad business decision, we should shut it down. Weeks later, OpenAI did. They knew. They went too far.•       David Chalmers vs. Plato: The book stages a debate between the living philosopher and the dead one, using AI to generate Plato's side. Chalmers said he wasn't sure he would have phrased things quite that way, but found it entertaining. Rosenbaum didn't show it to Chalmers in advance because Plato didn't get the same opportunity. That's fairness in the age of bots. About the GuestSteven Rosenbaum is a journalist, filmmaker, and co-founder of the Sustainable Media Center at NYU. He is the author of The Future of Truth: How AI Reshapes Reality, with a foreword by Maria Ressa. He lives on the Upper West Side of New York City.References:•       The Future of Truth: How AI Reshapes Reality by Steven Rosenbaum, foreword by Maria Ressa.•       Episode 2860: We Shape Our AI, Thereafter It Shapes Us — Keith Teare on the agency debate. Rosenbaum is the counter-argument.•       Episode 2854: Perfection Is the Devil — Daniel Smith on AI chatbots as inherently sycophantic. Rosenbaum's “spectacularly good liar” is the same diagnosis.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. Alan Skorski interviewed Thane Rosenbaum whose recent book, Beyond Proportionality: Israel's Just War in Gaza outlines how the IDF not only fought within accordance of international law, but performed at unparalleled levels to minimize non-combatant fatalities that no other army in the world has ever done. Following Rosenbaum's summary of his book during the opening of the interview the focus then shifted to his recently published a column, titled, If the Horseshow Fits…Saddle Up which raised awareness of the rise of antisemitism from the right, which was unheard of just a few years ago. According to Professor Rosenbaum, the antisemitism on the left has been more organized from the start than anything coming from the right. “The left has a stranglehold” on some of the most important institutions which hold all the reigns of power, starting with our universities. In sharp contrast, the antisemitism coming from the right, which Rosenbaum calls “guttural antisemitism,” isn't anything new, just the same old trash we heard in the 1930's, and from antisemites in every previous century. On the left, there is unity in their war against Israel, Zionism, and the Jews. Whereas on the Right, who else do they really have besides Tucker Carlson, who, according to Professor Rosenbaum, isn't very educated, and nothing he says is terribly profound. During the interview, Skorski reminded his audience that while the Left is united with little to no fracture in their ranks, there are many pro-Israel Christians who have pushed back hard against the charlatans masquerading as Christians like Carlson, Candace Owens, and most recently, Carrie Prejean Boller, who was briefly on President Trump's Board to promote religious liberty until her antisemitic outbursts, including support for Candace Owens, got her removed from the Board. Deric Rosenbaum, President and CTO of Groucho's Deli, a legendary brand celebrating 85 years in business, shares his journey from a commercial construction background to leading the brand's growth and technological evolution, emphasizing a philosophy of "adapt, not change" to modernize systems while preserving the core essence of community and hospitality. He discusses the strategic decision to prioritize controlled, concentric growth through franchising, the importance of fostering human connection in an increasingly digital world, and how leveraging data and a robust tech stack (including Square for restaurants, Ovation, and Bikky) helps optimize operations and enhance customer loyalty without sacrificing the personal touch.10 Key Takeaways "Adapt, Don't Change": Modernize systems (technology, operations) while retaining the core brand identity and legacy (e.g., original recipes). Community and Hospitality are Core Assets: Building community and genuine hospitality is crucial for customer loyalty and takes time and investment. Controlled Growth Strategy: Groucho's prefers slow, measured, and concentric growth to maintain quality, brand recognition, and efficient distribution, avoiding rapid, capital-intensive expansion common in private equity models. Technology as an Enabler, Not a "Shiny Object": Tech should enhance guest experience and simplify operations, not just be used for its own sake. Prioritize Retention Over Acquisition: Focusing on retaining existing guests drives frequency, which in turn leads to organic new guest acquisition and revenue growth, even during economic pressures. The Importance of an Open API: A robust and open POS API (like Square's) allows for seamless integration with "best of fit" third-party tools (like Ovation for feedback and Bikky for data) to create a unified commerce ecosystem. Data-Driven Decisions: Utilizing a customer data platform (CDP) like Bikky allows for deep understanding and segmentation of guests to tailor marketing and improve operational efficiency. Consistency Creates Loyalty: Standardizing processes across the chain and delivering consistent experiences fuels success in the long term. Invest in Training and Culture: Especially in a franchise model, training operators (not just money partners) on the fundamentals of hospitality is key to maintaining brand standards and a positive guest experience. Listen to Your Guests: Use feedback mechanisms (like Ovation's text-based system) to engage in two-way conversations and make targeted operational adjustments based on sentiment analysis.

I recently read an editorial piece written by Steve Rosenbaum of The Sustainable Media Center. The title of his piece caught my eye: “Snap, Shame, Repeat: Inside the New Adolescent Reality.” Rosenbaum writes these words: “Social media hasn't just reshaped adolescence – it has reprogrammed it. And we are only now starting to realize how deep the damage goes.” He recounts reading a headline in The Guardian which he says stopped him in his tracks. The headline? “If there's a problem with boys' behavior, it's because of us.” Rosenbaum goes on to say that the “us” are adults, the platforms, the regulators, the educators, the media architects, and the investors. These are the people and institutions which have built social media into the destructive force that it is. But I would add one more group to that list of problem-makers. It's us, the parents. If we fail to see the dangers out there and then take steps to protect our kids, we have not lived up to our God-given parental responsibilities.
