This Today's Boondoggle Special Edition series brings back the VGN Midwest Wasteland Catalog to our listening audience every Saturday. Back during a time when a group of men could get together and share stories about their lives before the world became so judgmental and offended by everything and Woke Mobs ran roughshod with their cancel pitchforks and torches. Dudes discussing a plethora of topics through out it's run that you will find highly entertaining. There will be drinking, there will be burping, there will be farting, and there will be a lot of bad humor. I personally was a huge fan of the series during my military deployment and was a fun distraction during my down time. Credit to the band Warrior Soul for their song The Wasteland. HOST: CHAMERE POOLE Our first podcast episode! And we’re diving right into CHAT, but thankfully, we’ve got three lovely instructors to walk us through it.
Palms invented the Vegas nightclub. Posh, over-the-top environments where the beautiful people congregate to see and be seen. Many mocked the financial viability of creating a diversion that keeps people from gambling for extended periods of time. Not only did Maloof prove them wrong, he did it so well, it drew people away from the strip at night. Now, nightclubs are one of the most profitable amenities Vegas properties offer. Eventually, as happens so many times in Vegas, the idea was replicated all over the strip and is now another Vegas staple. They’ve become so popular that it gave birth to the idea of day clubs. Despite breathtaking views of the strip from the top of their towers, Palms are no longer a major player in the game they invented. That brings us to the present The clubs that once caused long lines nightly, advertising exclusivity have become displaced in the market. Retheming and renovations are underway in an attempt to return to glory but his has them in a period of transition. The Playboy club has now been transformed into the View, A place where people can relax, play some pool and enjoy a drink as well as the view from atop their fantasy tower. Now that Ghostbar’s renovations are complete, Moon is closed so she can undergo the same changes, having lived the shortest life span of the nightclubs at the property. The odds are long that Palms will be able to reclaim their thrown as nightlife lords but then again, the same was said about those clubs ever being successful in the first place so they are trying. Only time will tell if they are successful.
Illinois native Kerry Simon made a name for himself as the executive chef at the landmark Plaza Hotel in New York. Two years into the job, Rolling Stone named him the “Rock n Roll Chef” as well as one of the top personalities in 1991. Continuing to grow his fame, he’s made appears both as a challenger and a judge on Iron Chef as well as Hell’s Kitchen. In 2002, Kerry entered the Las Vegas market when he opened Simon Kitchen & Bar at the Hard Rock. That establishment was listed as one of America’s best new restaurants by Esquire magazine. His footprint in the market has grown since then Considering that the one time he won as a challenger on Iron Chef was the hamburger challenge, it only made sense that this first restaurant on the Vegas strip would be a burger joint. In 2010, Kerry opened Kerry’s Gourmet Burger, or KGB, at Harrah’s. As one would expect with the name, the theme of the place is Russian. The space and décor is set to look like you would imagine Russia looks like, at least the American idea of what Russia looks like.
Located somewhere between luxury and value, Monte Carlo is a property with an identity issue. Originally conceived as another Vegas themed resort, this one paying homage to her namesake in Europe, Monte Carlo offers the less affluent a chance to experience and enjoy luxury. However the properties theme does not accurately reflect her energy. The properties classic architecture can be enjoyed by the pool via the lazy river. Beautiful chandeliers and stained glass ceilings resided over low to mid-limit gaming tables and fine dining can be enjoyed 50 feet away from a fast food court. The Monte Carlo concept is almost the definition of an oxymoron, but in a good way.Monte Carlo is fun. It isn’t the kind of place you think of in “must do” or “you have to try” conversations. It isn’t a destination nor does it offer anything exceptionally unique, its just fun. Monte Carlo is like a well run McDonald’s or any popular fast food chain that offers good food at a good price. Monte Carlo offers Vegas fun for those that don’t want to stay at Circus Circus the lowest tier properties but can’t afford to stay at the Mirage or Caesars Palace.
Every property in Vegas has a coffee shop, its part of the blueprints of a hotel & casino. Slots here, craps table there and coffee shop around the corner. As with everything in Vegas, quality varies from one property to the other. But if you’re tired of the decadent dining surrounding you in Vegas, it’s the one place you can be sure to get a simple meal of eggs and bacon for breakfast or a club sandwich for lunch.Enter Planet Dailies, the coffee shop at Planet Hollywood. At first glance you get the impression something is different here. Not only is the space modern and sheik but it very much fits in with the property surrounding it. The space showcase warm colours, wood furnishings and surrounds you with 48 flat screen TVs with programing consisting of movie previews, celebrity news and various accident-prone blooper entertainments. But who cares about all that, how’s the food. Why bother doing what everyone else does? Why not attempt to rethink the standards and elevate them to a new plateau. It is Vegas, blur the lines. At Planet Dailies, the French toast is dipped in a crème Brule batter, the BLT is topped with two poached eggs and angus hamburgers are served on a bed of rice, topped with an egg and covered in gravy. Good luck deciding what you want to try 1st here and once you do that, good luck trying to not order it every time you go back. Rest assured that, almost without exception, no matter what you order, you are going to love it.

Five years after the start of the global financial crisis, most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have continued to register relatively vigorous growth. Economic activity throughout the region continues to expand: GDP growth is projected to reach 4.9% in 2013, compared with 4.2% in 2012, and will rise to 5.5% in 2015, according to the World Bank’s new Africa’s Pulse, the twice-yearly analysis of the economic trends and latest data on the continent. On Dec 4th, 1956, Elvis decided to pop into Sun studios to pay a visit to Sam. While there, he had a chance to check out the latest recording from Carl Perkins, who happened to have a new kid by the name of Jerry Lee Lewis playing piano for him during the sessions. After chatting for a while, an impromptu jam session began between the 3. At some point during the fun, John Cash stopped by and joined in. Fortunately for the world, the sound engineer thought it would be a good idea to record the session. Sam Phillips realized the opportunity for some press and called the Memphis paper. The next day, the paper released the iconic photo of the 4 playing together and dubbed the jam session the Million Dollar Quartet.
Like most people fortunate enough to have an amazing voice, Veronic DiCaire started as a singer. She was in a group, and then did musical theatre and eventually did 2 solo French-speaking albums for which she won awards. But more than singing, Veronic loved signing like other people. Correction, she liked to imitate other female singers in voice and mannerisms. All told, Veronic is known for her virtual pitch perfect vocal impersonations of 50 of the biggest female recording artists with some of the biggest voices in history. Veronic went on tour as an opener for Celine Dion in 2008 during a stretch in Montreal. It isn't clear if she was performing material from her albums or if she had made the full move over to impersonations at this point. Whatever it was, it caught Celine's eye and she used her pull at Caesars Entertainment to get Veronic a shot at a residency at Bally's. Two weeks into that month long residency, the run was extended indefinitely.

In 2001, the Maloof Family opened the Palms. In 2002, attempting to grab the 21-39 year old market, 2002, MTV filmed a season of their reality show The Real World in the property. The results caused the off-strip properties popularity to explode. Suddenly, it became THE place young celebrities went to hangout, party and be seen while simultaniosly reinventing Vegas into the place we know it today.
