Operation Ivy was likely your favorite band's favorite band, and Corbett Redford, director of the documentary Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk, tells us why. These teenage pioneers of ska-inflected punk were a flagship band of Berkeley's 924 Gilman scene in the mid 1980s, releasing only one full length that galvanized a scene and several generations of future punks. I could’ve talked to Corbett Redford about his documentary Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk, or about his legendary band Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children Macnuggits but instead we spent most of the hour talking about Huey Lewis. Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70's - early ‘90's with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal. This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California's pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region's tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley's all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators' petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Throwback to when we had Corbett Redford and Anthony Marchitiello on the podcast to talk about their film Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk
Growing up in the Bay Area, you learn a lot about the many ways the history of the Bay Area has impacted the rest of the world. In fact, many social movements that changed our country originated right here by The Bay. Social culture is not the only thing the Bay Area has provided the world. The Bay Area, especially the East Bay, saw the rise of a musical revolution that began in the 1970's: The introduction of Punk Rock. Today on the podcast, we have East Bay natives Corbett Redford and Anthony Marchitiello, whom wrote, produced and directed the documentary Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk, which captures 30 years of punk rock history. One the headlining films in the Albany Film Festival, we discuss their documentary, as well as their time growing up in the East Bay and the influence it had on them. Corbett Redford, director of the new documentary "Turn it Around: The Story of East Bay Punk" and one half of the musical duo, Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits stops by 3 Gigs and shares how the Bay Area was once filled with Marijuana and Funk metal, and how he either played his the first show at a sandwich shop or between sets with Papa Roach, while torturing a clown. He shares what it was like playing wherever you could to reach people, the crazy genre hybrid bands of the 90s, the unique qualities of the San Francisco Bay Area Punk Scene with it’s mixing of cultures and multiple cities…opening up for Negativeland and having to convince them Bobby Joe Ebola wasn’t a real band. What it feels like to nail the moment, “how much art can you take?” putting on Geekfests for years, the creation of “irratainment” and having issues trying to play good shows in Eugene, Oregon....and that frankly stated…hippies aren’t supposed to be aggressive.
