In this special Pride Month episode, host Dan Hall explores the vital concept of "finding our tribes" within the Queer community through conversations with previous guests. For many LGBTQ+ individuals, discovering safe spaces has been about more than friendship—it's been essential for survival and self-acceptance in a world that often fails to see or understand queer experiences. These communities serve as places where Queer people celebrate triumphs and mourn losses together, but like any family, they can be complicated. Through intimate discussions with Queer musicians from around the world, this episode examines what community means to them, its imperfections, and how we might build more inclusive spaces. From hidden bars of decades past to the evolution of Pride from protest to celebration, these artists share personal stories that illuminate the ongoing journey of creating and maintaining vibrant queer communities.Timestamped Key Takeaways[00:01:00] Finding Our Tribes: Dan discusses how finding safe spaces in the queer community is often about survival and learning to be comfortable with who we are, finally seeing ourselves mirrored in a world that didn't always see us.[00:02:02] Historical Context: Looking back at previous decades helps us understand why queer spaces remain vital today, as openly queer living wasn't an option for many generations who had to carve out their own hidden corners of the world.[00:02:49] Kele Fleming's First Community: Singer-songwriter Kele Fleming shares how a gay club called Rumours in Victoria became her "community centre" and "life saver" in 1984, offering a space where she could be her authentic self despite family non-acceptance.[00:05:25] Creating New Spaces: Jon Ginoli of Pansy Division discusses founding a queer rock band in the early 90s when rock music wasn't considered "gay enough" within mainstream gay culture, helping pioneer the queercore music scene.[00:08:01] Global Perspectives on Safety: Brazilian musician Eric Lenfair speaks about the inherent cautiousness that many queer people develop growing up, while Eric Torino shares his experiences with fear of public affection even in supposedly accepting places like New York.[00:11:12] Exclusion Within the Community: James Taylor Junior discusses feeling left out of the queer community due to factors like ageism and racism, highlighting that the LGBTQ+ community isn't one unified entity but complex and diverse.[00:13:14] Specific Spaces for Specific Needs: Brooklyn-based singer Roderick Woodruff explains the importance of spaces specifically for Black queer individuals where he doesn't have to "perform" or diminish himself to make others comfortable.[00:15:19] Artistic Communities: Baltimore musician Greg Hatem describes how supportive queer ecosystems allow artists to thrive and create work that connects with people from all backgrounds.[00:19:46] The Evolution of Pride: Various artists reflect on how Pride has changed from its origins as a protest movement to becoming more commercialized and mainstream, questioning what this means for its political message.[00:24:33] Internal Community Challenges: James Taylor Junior and others discuss damaging stereotypes within the gay community, from body image pressures to racism experienced by queer people of color within LGBTQ+ spaces.[00:29:23] Hope for the Future: Polish singer-songwriter Tomek Zdyb shares his vision for what community can achieve through mutual support and education, emphasizing respect and human connection.Resource ListFeatured Artists and Their EpisodesKele Fleming -

This week on Toilet Radio: We sat down to watch a little-known 2004 documentary on Christian heavy metal, Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music. We went in blind and we were pleasantly surprised by the scope of voices, hard-hitting questions, and nuanced responses offered in this documentary. In addition to Zao, Demon Hunter, and other well known Christian bands, you hear from Pansy Division, Steve Albini, and a host of lapsed as well as true believers. We even hear from son of disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker. Hot damn! Can't stress it enough: this movie is actually good and actually worth your time if you have any interest in 2000s evangelical youth culture, the pairing of Christianity and right wing politics, and the business of Christian music. Folks, it's a good one. Want to watch the documentary? It's free on YouTube. Music featured on this show: Skaphos – Abyssal Tower Want more Toilet Radio? It's a very special BONUS episode of Baxie's Musical Podcast! This time I talk with Jon Ginoli of Pansy Division! In 1991 Pansy Division became the first openly gay rock band in history! It was a band that combined an irreverent sense of humor with great songwriting, solid musicianship, relentless touring, and whole lot of fun! They're significant because they spoke to a entire population of youth who, at the time, were unable to live their lives without the fear of being stigmatized, discriminated against, or worse! Thankfully things have changed dramatically since 1991. But Pansy Division continues to play every year since! In fact, they'll be at the Faces Brewing Company in Malden, Massachusetts on September 19th! It promised to be a total blast! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, Rock102.com, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee!

Happy Solstice all you Godless bloodsucking pagans. Let's celebrate with "The Dobermen". The Dobermen are a clash of GayC/DC (Steve, Chris, Brian) , The Streetwalking Cheetahs (Frank), and Pansy Division (also Chris). Thus, you can guess what they are going to give us. Veteran rock musicians, forming a "Supergroup" to musically take on "The Karen Culture". Having formed the band off an idea being bounced around in some text conversations, they did not "meet" as a band until the day of the video shoot. Politically charged, this video shows us the absurdity of what people have come up with during the pandemic, in a very loud package. An album is coming soon, and it is gonna be a great one. Their story rocks, and more names were dropped, and stories told to make any rock junkie jealous. I am not kidding, these guys are the real deal. facebook bandcamp #thedobermen #streetwalkincheetahs #pansydivision #gayc/dc If you like what we do, please consider supporting us on Patreon Also, for Pride please support a wonderful cause www.wunderkeks.com

This week, the Yellow Brit Road lead to a rainbow (with the pot of gold at the end and everything intact) as we celebrated Pride month. We revelled in the music of LGBTQ+ artists, sang along to Tom Robinson's national queer anthem from 1978 because we're Glad To Be Gay, and celebrated younger artists breaking new ground in queer music, both in Britain and across the world. Featuring David Bowie, Tom Robinson, Pillow Queens, Dream Nails, Petrol Girls, Problem Patterns, Antony and the Johnsons, Noisettes, Readers Wifes, Blur, Pansy Division, and Rufus Wainwright, the explosive playlist for this week can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0qwEvb1iyydklUmSl7T1PX?si=N-vp86ocQzGg9ZOaPS0pwQ! Readers Wifes can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xacDlXnekxs. Come for the pun, stay for the music. CFRC's Yellow Brit Road brings you your weekly fix of British music every Sunday evening at 8 PM. We talk British music, and its rich and exciting history, and then some! Listen live on your dial at 101.9 FM in the Kingston area, or on cfrc.ca, Sundays 8 to 9 PM! (Full shows are available in the archive for 3 months from release)
On this week's show, we spend quality time exploring the queer country community, checking out the new Jayhawks record & spinning some tracks we haven't listened to in a minute. All this & much, much less!
Pipeman Interviews Frank Meyer (who wrote it), Bruce Duff (who produced it), Josie Cotton (who sings on it), creators of Flatten The Curve Song & Video.PUNK AND ALT ROCK LUMINARIES Release Social Distancing Video For"FLATTEN THE CURVE" Featuring members of Minutemen, Screeching Weasel,The Runaways, The Supersuckers, The Adolescents, Pansy Division, Josie Cotton, The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, and more! All Proceeds Go To Jubilee Consortium and Sweet Relief. Video Premieres via BrooklynVegan.Following the release last month of the benefit track "FLATTEN THE CURVE" which features members of Minutemen, Runaways, Redd Kross, and more artists and bands from the punk, indie and hard rock world, the wide array of contributing musicians decided to create a video to accompany the track. Sequestered and observing social distancing guidelines and rules, many of those participating in the track submitted self-shot footage for the fun and arresting video which premiered on BrooklynVegan.“This video is like a bizarre Rock 'n' Roll alternate reality," says songwriter/vocalist/backing vocalist/guitarist Frank Meyer (The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, Blind House) who wrote the song and directed the video. "Nowhere else would you see members of Minutemen and The Adolescents rockin' next to members KIX and JetBoy. Where else would you see the singer of The Runaways and Josie Cotton alongside members of Fishbone, Screeching Weasel and The Supersuckers? It's like my whole record collection made a record together and then a video... Actually I guess they did!"Set up to create awareness to prevent the spread of COVID-19, "Flatten The Curve" collected seminal and iconic rock, punk and alternative rock luminaries, celebrating the power of a community coming together to stop the pandemic. The song was written over the course of two days and the recording took one week to assemble and coordinate the full cast of characters. “Flatten the Curve” reaped the rewards from the contributions of its wealth of guests, all of whom donated their time and talent while isolated and in quarantine.Benefiting Jubilee Consortium and Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, “Flatten the Curve” will donate 100% of its proceeds equally between the charities. The Jubilee Consortium (a 501c3 impact organization) is a Los Angeles-based operation committed to creating healthy and just neighborhoods through enrichment opportunities and leadership programs that promote good health, develop leaders and offer alternatives to violence. Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70's - early ‘90's with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal. This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California's pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region's tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley's all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators' petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Norb Rozek is known better to the world as Reverend Norb, the front man of Boris The Sprinkler. Before he was the incomparable voice of the legendary Green Bay punk band, Rozek was cutting his teeth in other — far less-renowned — Titletown projects like Static Cling and Suburban Mutilation after being led to a life in rock and roll by The Everly Brothers of all things. With close to 40 years of onstage experience, Rev. Norb has no shortage of great stories at the ready. Recently, Norb invited My First Band host Tyler Maas into his home in Green Bay to talk about the city's music scene, being part of a high school riot that allegedly inspired a 7 Seconds song, being tricked into joining Boris The Sprinkler in the early '90s, being bumped from a Green Day and Pansy Division show in Neenah in the early '90s, his stint with The Onions, and so, SO much more. Along the way, the pair also talked about Heritage Hill, Concert Cafe and non-existent barn shows in Wrightstown. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Boris The Sprinkler ("Spider Baby").

In the penultimate broadcast of Eclectic Kettle we welcome back Tom and Anna as co-hosts for a fresh round of joyous, chaotic banter and mirth. We also deliver some spectacular technical flubs, as if to get as many in before the end as we can. Tom, to his credit, actually prepared a theme and delivers an insightful and impassioned playlist of overlooked gay songwriters, while we also play a cover that he's been trying to get onto Kettle for some 3 years now.We also talk a tiny little bit about Ben's New Show, which will take the place of Kettle in the nearish future. We grab a seat on the “punk couch,” an old piece of living room furniture covered in band name tags. Penelope created is as part of an installation, drawing upon her days as the 19-year-old singer of seminal San Francisco punk band, The Avengers. These days, Houston mostly paints during her off hours from the SF library. Her latest project finds her recreating mugshots from nearly 100 years ago. Muzzlers features a parade of grizzled sex workers and sex criminals. It’s been a half dozen years since her last solo record, On Market Street. The singer still performs, both under her own name and as the Avengers, who’ve played off and on since reforming in 1999, with members of The Mr. T Experience, Pansy Division and Screeching Weasel In a wide ranging interview, we discuss the early days of the band, painting and finding creative fulfillment.

Episode 31 sees me in a conversation with the inimitable Bev Rage of the Chicago Queercore punk band 'Bev Rage and the Drinks' Bev (sometimes Beverley/Josh)is the lead singer and punk drag creation. We chat about her origins playing in bands in Cleveland, Ohio and how her/his desire to bring queerness to punk music and to steer away from the 'four white guys in a van' scenario began. Bev tells us the origins of 'Beverley' and how she met fellow bandmate Aaron on the streets of Chicago whilst he was selling ice cream and Bev was selling plasma! We discuss the importance of drag on popular culture and Bev's connections with the Chicago drag scene. From their first gig supporting Pansy Division to the release of their current brilliant EP 'Honk If Yer Hungry' - (on iTunes and Bandcamp,Spotify etc )it's a whirlwind ride and not one for the fainthearted. I must have been 12 or so when I first saw the Pansy Division. The band was opening for Green Day at a benefit show in Oakland, a return to the Bay Area following the triumphant Dookie tour. I had no idea what to make of the band at the time — and my dad, who’d kindly agreed to chaperone, was, I believe amused. He may or may not have said, “don’t tell your mother about this.” But that was always the Pansy Division’s MO — in your face sexuality backed by songwriting that rarely took itself seriously. The band no doubt blew the minds of young teens all across the country as the opening act for the soon to be biggest rock band in the world, and it appeared to have a hell of a time doing it. This year marks the group’s quarter-century anniversary, a milestone it celebrated with Quite Contrary, its first album in seven years, which is both celebratory and reflective, featuring a cover shot in the same room that graced the band’s seminal 1996 album Wish I'd Taken Pictures, starring the same two cover models. Frontman Jon Ginoli already did a thorough job reflecting on the band and its influence in his wonderful 2009 memoir, Deflowered: My Life in Pansy Division, but a twenty-fifth anniversary offers yet another opportunity to recognize how far he, his band and the world around them have come in the last few decades. We sat down at a cafe in Manhattan following a recent appearance in the city to discuss the band, its music and mission.
