Vancouver pop-punk supergroup Precursor is set to ignite the music scene once again with their latest full-length album, "Thick & Thin," scheduled for release on August 9th, 2024. Known for their eclectic blend of punk, skatepunk, softcore, melodic hardcore, and pop punk influences, Precursor promises fans an exhilarating musical journey reminiscent of bands like The Story So Far, Kid Dynamite, Piebald, A Wilhelm Scream, Daggermouth, Carpenter, and Gob. Originally conceived as a defiant response to the prevailing indie trends, Precursor emerged as a side project uniting talents from Stuart McKillop (Daggermouth/End This Week with Knives), Daniel Sioui (Carpenter/All State Champion), Andy Lewis (The Fullblast), and Blaine McNamee (In Bear Country). Drawing inspiration from the hardcore punk ethos of the 1990s, the band quickly garnered attention for their high-energy performances and unapologetically raw attitude. "Thick & Thin" represents a significant milestone for Precursor, capturing the essence of their evolution over the years. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Stuart McKillop at Rain City Mastering, with drums tracked at Rain City Recorders, the album is a testament to the band's commitment to authenticity and sonic excellence. Vocalist Daniel Sioui's lyrics delve into personal struggles and poignant reflections, shaped by the challenges of middle age and the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Daniel Sioui candidly shares, “This album sucked to make. It took months of starts and stops because life gets in the way when you are married, almost 50 years old and have 3 kids. Imagine driving to the burbs on random Sunday mornings before your kids' dance class, violin or soccer practices to scream your head off in a garage. It wasn't hard to be pissed off. I lost a few friends to suicide leading up to the recording and you can hear it. Spent months of nights scrawling lyrics in bed. Thick & Thin was the hardest album for me to make in my 35 years of recording. There were times Stu would have me completely rewrite songs…both lyrics and melodies. A total redo. It always yielded a better result and he was right to do it but it really beat me down at times. I'm so proud of the record now but there were many days I didn't know if I could finish it. I don't have too many more records in me so I'm happy it's released out into the wild. Just need my kids to grow up before I can play it for them.” The addition of Gabe Mantle (Gob/Brand New Unit) on drums and Travis Hein (Neck of the Woods) on second guitar and backing vocals injected new vitality into Precursor, propelling the band to new heights of creativity and intensity. "Thick & Thin" not only showcases the band's musical prowess but also serves as a personal testament to resilience and artistic vision. Released on Gold Stock Records, "Thick & Thin" is poised to captivate both long-time fans and new listeners alike with its infectious melodies, explosive energy, and thought-provoking lyricism. As Precursor prepares to unleash their latest offering into the world, anticipation is high for a record that promises to leave an indelible mark on the punk rock landscape. Catch Precursor live at the Pearl in Vancouver on August 2nd alongside Samiam, Off with Their Heads, and Weird Mood, where they'll bring their electrifying sound to life on stage. As an active recording and touring musician for over thirty years, Brad cut his teeth as the guitarist and vocalist in From Ashes Rise, making music in a scene fraught with challenges to sound quality. He was raised in the North Mississippi Hill Country, surrounded by a rich and historic music scene, and, after studying Recording Industry Technology at Middle Tennessee State University in the late 1990s, Brad armed himself with a healthy obsession with records, sound, and music. He's always aimed to overcome the challenges independent artists face while helping them realize their vision of sonic perfection. Since founding Audiosiege in 2010, Brad, a self-described "musician's engineer", has mastered many notable albums, including Michael Stein and Kyle Dixon's opening sequence and Grammy-nominated official soundtrack for Netflix's "Stranger Things" series, the reissue of Sleep's monumental "Dopesmoker" LP, as well as records from Corrosion of Conformity, Nails, Samiam, Obituary, Yob, Twitching Tongues, and more. We had the pleasure of interviewing Reconciler over Zoom video!Reconciler is a band from Atlanta, GA who first amplified in the summer of 2016. Harkening to a sound alternately Southeast and East Bay, they released their debut LP, Set Us Free, in February of 2019 to critical acclaim from punk and Americana outlets alike. The band spent 2019 playing often across the Southeast and East coast and announced their first European shows, slated for June 2020.Shortly After the first anniversary of Set Us Free, the world shut down and all plans were canceled indefinitely. Reconciler wouldn't see another stage for 18 months despite releasing a split 7 inch with the legendary Gainesville outfit, Ship Thieves in January of 2021 and offering another new track on the Grace vinyl comp alongside many noteworthy acts including Hot Water Music, Samiam, and Catbite the following October.Reconciler has been hard at work rebuilding and refining its focus and is beyond ready to return with their sophomore album, Art For Our Sake, via Smartpunk Records. This 13 track LP stands as a testament to the band's tenacity and work ethic and is certain to offer Reconciler's strongest output to date.We want to hear from you! It's our fourth year of getting the patrons together and giving thanks for the new music that gave us happiness and good vibes in 2023. There's a wide array of bands and artists, new and old, that helped make 2023 a great year for music. New albums from 1980s, 90s and 00s artists like Slowdive, The Hives, Louise Post of Veruca Salt, Depeche Mode, Drop Nineteens, Samiam, Gaz Coombes of Supergrass, Madder Rose, Juliana Hatfield, The Hold Steady, Brad, Ash, OMD, Allen Epley of Shiner and The Life And Times, The Church, PJ Harvey, Blur, DJ Shadow, and many more all released great late career records, while newer bands like Crown Hands, Spotlights, Houston, Vast Robot Armies, and several others landed on our radar. We also spend an inordinate amount of time rambling about the new Andre 3000 album, New Blue Sun. Following the release of 1994's Clumsy for Atlantic, Samiam took their completed fifth album back from the major label and found a new home with Ignition. Unfortunately, that label ran into money troubles, leaving copies of You Are Freaking Me Out difficult to come by. For a band that evolved out of the same Bay Area punk scene as Green Day, Bad Religion, Operation Ivy, and many more, the band never reached the same commercial heights as some of their contemporaries, but maintains a dedicated fanbase to this day. While some may have questioned the band's evolution from skate punks to something closer to post-hardcore, emo, and even pop-punk, the key ingredients - catchy hooks, big guitar riffs, and a propulsive rhythm section, keep the record on track even when they take chances with quieter and more subdued moments, and even a Beatles cover. Songs In This Episode Intro - She Found You 20:44- Full On 27:06 - Cry Baby Cry 29:46 - Charity Outro - Ordinary Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. The sound of what we've come to know as "emo" from the insane popularity of bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco in the 2000s differs pretty wildly from the sound of the bands that spawned the genre. 90s emo is a particular brand of emo - much more moody, more lo-fi, more rooted in punk, hardcore, new wave, and bands like Fugazi. In large part thanks to Nirvana, little scenes began popping up all over small town America throughout the 90s, and seemingly random outcroppings like Boise, ID Mesa, AZ, Kansas City, MO and Milwaukee, WI became hotbeds of guitar driven heart-on-sleeve bands made up of kids getting in touch with their emotions while bashing out some cathartic rock n roll. You didn't have to be there, but it helps and this week's guest was right in the thick of it back in the day as was your humble host.
