This week on Blondehaus – I mean, er—Bloodhaus, Josh and Dru are joined by trash movie genius, Dylan Dawson! They discuss the best shot-on-video film of all time, BLONDE DEATH!!! This is a tape by James Dillinger aka queer novelist James Robert Baker. From wiki: James Robert Baker (October 18, 1947 – November 5, 1997) was an American author of sharply satirical, predominantly gay-themed transgressional fiction. A native Californian, his work is set almost entirely in Southern California. After graduating from UCLA, he began his career as a screenwriter, but became disillusioned and started writing novels instead. Though he garnered fame for his books Fuel-Injected Dreams and Boy Wonder, after the controversy surrounding publication of his novel, Tim and Pete, he faced increasing difficulty having his work published. According to his life partner, this was a contributing factor in his suicide.”They also discuss the Frankenhooker VHS, Dylan's wife was in House of the Devil, erotic thrillers, Triple Fisher: The Lethal Lolitas of Long Island, the novels of James Robert Baker, EZTV, The Beaver Trilogy, Guy Maddin's Archangel, Rape of the Vampire, Freeway, Ken Russell's Whore, My Bloody Valentine, Redneck Zombies, Henry & Glenn Forever, Angry Samoans, Boy Wonder, Tim & Pete, Sean Baker, and more!Buy the Bleeding Skull blu-ray while supplies last: https://vinegarsyndrome.com/products/blonde-death NEXT WEEK: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)  Follow us all across the internet: Bloodhaus: https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/ Joshua Conkel https://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/ Dylan Dawson https://letterboxd.com/dyldaws/

In this episode we welcome the legendary Penelope Spheeris and invite her to talk us through her extraordinary life and brilliant career. Barney wastes little time in asking the Louisiana-born filmmaker about the shocking traumas of her childhood and teenage years. We hear about her alcoholic mother's multiple marriages and the family's move to Southern California that led to Penelope putting herself through film school before graduating from UCLA. Along with the Saturday Night Live shorts she made with actor/comic Albert Brooks, Penelope talks about the pioneering Rock 'n' Reel production company that made '70s videos for everyone from Funkadelic to Fleetwood Mac. We also learn about her conversion to punk rock via Brendan Mullen's Masque club, where she shot SoCal hardcore bands like X, Fear, the Germs and Black Flag, the footage winding up in 1981's thrilling Decline of Western Civilization. From the first Decline we jump forward seven years to Decline II — and to a discussion of the '80s glam-metal scene that exploded on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip via bands such as W.A.S.P. and Poison. In addition we hear clips from Mat Snow's 1989 audio interview with all-girl quartet Vixen, sparking a discussion of rampant misogyny on the big-hair metal scene. With Decline II: The Metal Years being our guest's de facto passport to directing 1992's enormo-grossing Wayne's World, we ask Spheeris to recall her not-altogether- felicitous experience of working on the hit Saturday Night Live spinoff with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. We also consider how the week's featured writer "Metal Mike" Saunders bridged the gulf between metal and punk, tracing his maverick career from a 1971 Creem review of Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come to the 1978 formation of SoCal hardcore band Angry Samoans. After Mark offers quotes from recently-added library pieces about electro-pop duo Erasure, rapper Schoolly D and, yes, Penelope Spheeris, Jasper closes out the episode with remarks on articles about El Paso's At the Drive-In and David Bowie. Many thanks to special guest Penelope Spheeris. Visit her website at penelopespheeris.com. Pieces discussed: The Decline of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris: The "Mad Surgeon" of Film, Vixen audio, Sir Lord Baltimore, A Brief Survey of the State of Metal Music Today, Metal Mike Saunders, Angry Samoans, Annie Nightingale, Erasure, Penelope Spheeris interviewed by Richard Harrington, Schoolly D, At the Drive-In and David Bowie.

This week on the show, Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury joins Penelope Spheeris, director of The Decline of Western Civilization trilogy, The Beverly Hillbillies, Little Rascals, Suburbia, and Wayne's World. Spheeris is the host of Peter and the Acid King, a true crime podcast set in the Los Angeles punk scene of the early ‘80s concerning the unsolved murder of Peter Ivers. A pop culture wunderkind, Ivers was many things at once: an all-star harmonica player who played alongside Little Walter, a pal of Van Dyke Parks who opened for Fleetwood Mac, and a songwriter who wrote music for David Lynch's Eraserhead and artists like Diana Ross and The Pointer Sisters. In the early '80s, he found found notoriety as host of New Wave Theatre, which showcased Bad Religion, Circle Jerks, 45 Grave and the Angry Samoans. Peter and the Acid King explores that epochal cultural era and its violent end. Working with investigator and co-creator Alan Sacks, Spheeris narrates with 10-part series, which is just about to finish its run, with world weary charm and sly understatement, as well as her signature attitude. If you dig our show and want to support the work we do at Aquarium Drunkard, pledge your support on Patreon and help keep the servers humming.  Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Detlef Schlich is Podcaster, Visual Artist, Film Maker, Ritual Designer and Media Archaeologist, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. He mainly works in performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. To research our human condition and create artwork from this reflection, he often uses the digital shaman's methodology as alter ego. His media archaeology is a conceptual and practical exercise in carving out the aesthetic, cultural, and political singularities of media in culture.WEBSITE LINKSSteven Drojenskyhttps://www.facebook.com/steven.drojensky.3https://www.discogs.com/artist/1638951-Moral-Decayhttps://www.allmusic.com/artist/steve-drojensky-mn0001286070?1672336180355Detlef SchlichInstagramDetlef Schlich ArTEEtude I love West Cork Artists FacebookDetlef Schlich I love West Cork Artists Group ArTEEtudeYouTube Channelsvisual PodcastArTEEtudeCute Alien TV official WebsiteArTEEtude Detlef Schlich Det Design Tribal Loop Download here for free Detlef Schlich´s Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culturehttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/303749640_Shamanism_Art_and_Digital_Culture_Cause_and_EffectSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/arteetude-a-podcast-with-artists-by-detlef-schlich/donations

Bleeding Skull recently ranked Blonde Death as the greatest shot-on-video film of all time. It's a little known artifact of the punk era, shot on a mere $2,000 budget and combining elements of John Waters, Richard Kern, Kenneth Anger and Russ Meyer into one scream against suburban mediocrity. On this episode: the California suburbs, televangelists, bare bottomed spankings, Scarlet O'Hara dresses, a one-eyed lesbian, escaped mass murderers, punishment by enema, cyanide and Tang, baby oil handjobs, the dangers of roller coasters, the bites of an "amputee kid", Jonestown exploitation, and a soundtrack by the Angry Samoans!

Episode 47 Jason catches up with his ex-wife, Los Angeles raised, former Olympia punk, now fellow Portlander Star Athena. The two talk about Star's experience growing up in Los Angeles. Raised in a westside apartment down the hall from Punky Meadows, frontman of Casablanca recording artists Angel. Her brother Heath played in many LA bands, doing a stint with Angry Samoans among others. She talks about how as a teen going to punk shows she was repulsed by the sexual violence and harassment she experienced in the crowd, but that it didn't crush her love of music. Star and Jason met in the very early 90's when she was a DJ at influential college station KUSF in San Francisco and he was working for Jello Biafra at Alternative Tentacles. They discuss those vital years in SF before tech dollars leveled the city's culture and the music industry was exploding with alternative grunginess. They go on to explore their move to Olympia after attending the International Pop Underground Fest and they recall what they both saw as the D.I.Y. pastoral punk paradise they found in their new home. They get into her two bands Flying Tigers and SubDebs who both released vinyl on K Records. It's not all about the past; Star explains how her diagnosis of Autism in her forties has given her a greater level of understanding and self-acceptance. She also shares some of the techniques and practices she uses today to mitigate the stress and anxiety of life and the challenges of living with multiple chronic illnesses. It's an uplifting conversation that went on much longer than one episode could hold. Hopefully Star will be back for a part two soon! Thank you for listening! Southern California punks Total Massacre, a self-described band of "anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-capitalists," have just dropped a raging and politically charged new track titled, "Get Rich or Try Dying." Of the track, singer Cap'n No-Fun says, “Get Rich or Try Dying started like most of our songs do, with a suggestion for a funny song title (this time from our drummer Tommy) combined with the unshakeable sense that literally everything has been fundamentally stacked against us. So not exactly new territory for us as far as songwriting goes but I feel like this one does a good job honing in on one of the really important points that I think is pretty important, and all too easily overlooked: That our lives are the commodity that is being bought and sold.” For the music video, the band enlisted the creative mind of Dylan Howard, the drummer from LA punk band The Lungs, who directed the clip. “Get Rich Or Try Dying” music video: https://youtu.be/LhWcVFjnIvcStream the track on digital platforms here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/totalmassacre/get-rich-or-try-dying The punk ethos is present in everything Total Massacre does, and has earned them an international following in an extremely short amount of time. Committed to bashing authority and calling out the dog whistle of fascism whatever the source, Total Massacre plays every song with a sense of urgency and dread as if at any second some lunatic in the White House might unleash nuclear annihilation upon us all. The LA-based 4-piece channels the breakneck pace and buzzsaw guitars of 80's hardcore with lyrics drenched in the sweat, tears, and disaffected rage of life today. Explicitly political and anti-fascist vocals bark an outraged retort to both the ineffectual, self-defeating cynicism of neoliberal centrists and the greedy, craven nihilism of modern-day conservatives. The self-titled Total Massacre (2018) and the blistering follow-up The System Works... (2019) laid the foundation for what this band stands for. Their live show came a long way, garnering a performance at 2019's Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival, and gigs opening for acts like Pennywise, The Bronx, MDC, Total Chaos, Naked Aggression, CJ Ramone, Flipper, Mondo Generator, Verbal Abuse, Angry Samoans, Mean Jeans, Pulley, DFL and more. The band was primed and ready to share the stage with Pears when Covid 19 shut everything down. Total Massacre spent the downtime writing songs remotely, rehearsing only once or twice before convening to record “the songs of 2020”, all to be released as a series of singles through the first half of 2021. The bands' home base studio Beer City nearly burned down in 2020, but should be up and running in time for the band to record another flurry of singles. As glad as they are that Trump will be out of office, they aren't holding their breath for the democratic establishment to fix our dumpster of a country, so you can count on plenty more pissed off hardcore from Total Massacre soon. Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70's - early ‘90's with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal. This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California's pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region's tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley's all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators' petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. During the production of our film, we conducted over 150 interviews around the United States and amassed over 500 hours of interview footage. Today's episode is a real doozey. Our old friend Farout returns to airwaves, bringing along with him his tourmate of the moment, Coolzey. We recorded this bad bish a while ago, but you're just getting it now because thats the way things go. My sincere apologies to Farout and Coolzey for not being timely. Coolzey specifically plugs a bunch of shows for the end of April, so thats fun to hear in June.  As a new guest, Coolzey was given the reigns on what we'd be jammin' and to my delight he picked the Butthole Surfers. We discuss the history of the band and what made them such freaks. (Hint: drugs played a heavy role.) At this point the Goldschläger and weed were really flowing, so to keep things going we play everything from Britney Spears to the Angry Samoans. The conversation gets loose and butt stuff inevitably comes up, natch. Good fun! I guess that's it. Oh yeah, subscribe to the show why don'tcha?
