In Good Wife, Wise Mother: Educating Han Taiwanese Girls Under Japanese Rule (U Washington Press, 2024), female education and citizenship serve as a lens through which to examine Taiwan's uniqueness as a colonial crossroads between Chinese and Japanese ideas and practices. A latecomer to the age of imperialism, Japan used modernization efforts in Taiwan to cast itself as a benevolent force among its colonial subjects and imperial competitors. In contrast to most European colonies, where only elites received an education, in Taiwan Japan built elementary schools intended for the entire population, including girls. In 1897 it developed a program known as “Good Wife, Wise Mother” that sought to transform Han Taiwanese girls into modern Japanese female citizens. Drawing on Japanese and Chinese newspapers, textbooks, oral interviews, and fiction, Fang Yu Hu illustrates how this seemingly progressive project advanced a particular Japanese vision of modernity, womanhood, and citizenship, to which the colonized Han Taiwanese people responded with varying degrees of collaboration, resistance, adaptation, and adoption. Hu also assesses the program's impact on Taiwan's class structure, male-female interactions, and political identity both during and after the end of Japanese occupation in 1945. Good Wife, Wise Mother expands the study of Taiwanese history by contributing important gendered and nonelite perspectives. It will be of interest to any historian concerned with questions of modernity, hybridity, and colonial nostalgia. Fang Yu Hu is assistant professor of History at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona who specializes in modern East Asian history, with a focus on Taiwan, gender, colonialism, and cross-border flows. She has published in the journals ERAS of Monash University and Twentieth-Century China. Her current research focuses on Taiwanese migrants to mainland China and Southeast Asia in the first half of the 20th century. Li-Ping Chen is a visiting scholar in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Southern California. Her research interests include literary translingualism, diaspora, and nativism in Sinophone, inter-Asian, and transpacific contexts.

With AI making it easier than ever to generate content, and consumers demanding more privacy than ever, is the promise of true 1:1 personalization now an impossible myth? Agility requires both adaptation to new AI-based tools and methods while also navigating the complex and shifting landscape of consumer trust and data privacy. It's about being responsive to both the opportunity and the responsibility. Today, we're going to talk about the central paradox facing marketers: the mandate for deep, AI-powered personalization is growing at the exact same time that access to the data that fuels it is becoming more restricted by privacy regulations and consumer skepticism. We'll explore how brands can bridge this gap, build trust, and turn privacy from a compliance hurdle into a competitive advantage. To help me discuss this topic, I'd like to welcome, Phyllis Fang, Head of Marketing at Transcend.

Welcome to Wealth Wine and Wisdom, where hosts Fenton and Jason (The Offsider) debrief the week's financial and economic chaos over a glass of wine. This week, the conversation is heated as the duo tackles the spike in Australian insolvencies, noting record highs in the construction and food/accommodation sectors, and the pressure created by rising minimum wages. In the property market, they analyze the slow pace of new home completions and the New South Wales government's billion-dollar plan to underwrite pre-sales in multi-density dwellings, discussing whether this controversial move can genuinely unlock supply. The debrief finishes with a look at the stock market. Fenton walks through the dramatic evolution of the S&P 500's top companies from 1990 to today, showcasing the rise of tech giants like Apple and Nvidia. He shares the crushing returns of the FANG index (44.8% annually over the last three years) and makes the case for investing in the "picks and shovels" that support the AI and crypto revolutions, including a look at the Crypto Innovators index. Tune in for clarity, a compass for the week, and to join the conversation!

In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the current state of the MBA admissions season, with interview invites continuing to roll out. This week, John's Hopkins / Carey has its Round 1 deadline, UPenn / Wharton is scheduled to release its Round 1 interview invites and UVA / Darden and Johns Hopkins / Carey are scheduled to release their Early Action Round decisions. Graham highlighted several upcoming events being hosted by Clear Admit that begin this week, including a Real Humans series and a series focused on MBA programs in different regions of the United States. Signups for all these events are here, https://www.clearadmit.com/events Graham also highlighted our next livestream AMA, which is now scheduled for Monday, October 27; here's the link to Clear Admit's YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/cayoutubelive. Graham recognized Stanford's 100-year anniversary by quizzing Alex on some of the history of the MBA Program degree and business schools in general. Graham then noted several recently published admissions tips which focus interview preparation, as well as an admissions tip that focuses on assessment days that are offered by a few top MBA programs. Graham highlighted a Real Humans piece that focuses on MBA students at Columbia Business School, and also reviewed Yale SOM's Class of 2027 profile, which appears to be very impressive. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries. This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a remarkably high salary, as a software engineer at a FANG company. We hope they will consider retaking the GRE. This week's second MBA applicant has a very high GMAT score of 705. They want to be in Austin Texas, post MBA. They are also very concerned with gaining scholarship to help defray costs. The final MBA candidate is a data scientist and is debating their post MBA goals. They want to do investment banking but worry how that would appear for adcom. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Happy Sunday!! This week we round out Jenna Levine's Vampire Series with Road Trip With A Vampire. We hope you enjoy this episode and don't forget to check out our socials here as they are the best way to keep up with all the fun and exciting things that we have coming down the line!! Summary: A vampire who can't remember his past and a witch with secrets of her own hit the road in this zany, cross-country romantic comedy from beloved author Jenna Levine. Reformed bad witch Grizelda “Zelda” Watson had hoped to never see another vampire again when she slipped away to sunny California for a fresh start. She'd grown tired of them and their nonsense ages ago. But when a vampire with amnesia unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep with a letter from her old friend Reggie, and asks for her help, she can't say no. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Peter Elliott is tall and gorgeous, looks great in yoga shorts, and has the kind of dark hair and surly expression Zelda's been a sucker for for hundreds of years. Peter isn't completely harmless—he is fanged, after all—but he's harmless enough, and soon becomes the only person in Zelda's new life who knows the truth about what she is. If she can help him decipher the cryptic notes in his journal, the only clues to his lost memories, she might as well try before sending him on his way. But when an alarming message from Peter's past coincides with a clear sign that Zelda can't keep running from her own, they embark on a cross-country road trip for answers—only to find what they're looking for in each other.

What is it like to spend a week in the deep jungle of Westen Africa, with nothing but a dirt floor, lots of Iboga, a skirt, and no necessities like water or a bed to rest in? In this intimate conversation, I welcome back my Iboga provider, and twice-initiated Bwiti practitioner Paije Alexandra West. With intention and care, Paije shares about her recent initiation into the Fang branch of the Bwiti tradition in Gabon. This is ultimately a conversation about what it means to walk the path of service with Iboga.Paije shares carefully about her journey from working in ibogaine clinics to becoming a ceremonial iboga provider, and how initiation has shaped her life, her family, and her work with her retreat center, ETÈREO in Baja. She opens up about the realities of being a provider—the intensity, responsibility, and beauty of holding this medicine—and offers fresh insight into the role of women's voices in the iboga space.Show Links:Paije's InstagramETÈREO's InstagramETÈREO's websiteExplore Coaching with Lana:Iboga Integration & Prep Coaching (NEW-now enrolling)Psychedelically Informed Life Coaching (6 Month Program)Stay Connected to Modern Psychedelics:Instagram: @modernpsychedelicsYouTube: Modern Psychedelics YouTubeWebsite: www.modernpsychedelics.netSubstack: The Healthy EgoFree Resources:FREE Iboga Preparation GuideFREE Set Better GoalsFREE Integration Journal FREE Intention Setting JournalFREE Psychedelic Ceremony ChecklistFREE Playlists for Psychedelic Journeys + IntegrationDISCLAIMER: Modern Psychedelics does not endorse or support the illegal consumption of any substances. This episode we're talking to none other than chef Kathy Fang of House of Nanking and Fang Restaurant about her new cookbook House of Nanking. We were delighted to hear behind the scenes stories of this San Francisco institution, her experiences growing up in the restaurant, and dive into this cookbook that is surprisingly accessible to the home cook. We talk about Kathy's early experiences critiquing her dishes, the signature experiences and dishes of HoN born out of necessity, and her dad's ingenuity throughout his life. Plus we talk about all of the things that make no sense but somehow make House of Nanking the success that it has been for over 30 years. The House of Nanking Cookbook: Family Recipes from San Francisco's Favorite Chinese Restaurant is out everywhere Sept 30th and available for pre-order now. Trust us when we say this book is beautiful and has dishes that are shockingly simple.
